Madden 21 Next-Gen Graphics Comparison (4K) - Current Gen Vs. Next Gen

We have posted a 4K video of our Madden 21 next-gen graphics comparison. This shows off the current-gen and next-gen versions of the game running on a PS5.

What we did here was capture various portions of a snow game at night and a game that starts at 4:15 in clear weather. We used the Browns vs. Eagles and Cowboys vs. Bills as the two matchups.

We do side-by-side comparisons for a game introduction, QB introduction, sideline comparisons and a run play. We also have separate plays showing off both runs and passes from the default camera, the broadcast camera, and the “modified” OS broadcast camera a lot of us like to use.

See what changes you can spot, and if you appreciate the video, be sure to subscribe to our channel and like the video. You all have been showing so much support lately and we love ya for it.

  1. Just to let you know, I do use the modified broadcast cam for some of the plays since I know a lot of us like using it. I also show stuff from the normal broadcast cam and the default cam. In addition, I do a full comparison of the sidelines so you guys can see for yourselves what has changed at all there.
Thanks so much for the support you all have been giving our YouTube channel lately. If you'd like to continue to help us out by liking and subscribing it would be much appreciated but it's not required of course.
I’ve played a few games on the series X. Even played a good online game but boy they look almost identical. The lighting is of course better but that’s about it visually. Sort of disappointed especially after their initial reveal trailer back in the summer and even poorer compared to NBA 2k21 and FIFA 21.
While no one expected a leap, there wasn't even a half effort for a hop.  EA just sucks man.  I've always been hard on them but would've given them at least q bit of props if they made some distinctive changes for next gen like a new commentary team or new art direction/assets with these bare minimum additions to the current unspectacular gameplay given that it's a free upgrade.  But they are so underwhelming and only innovative in everything  else that doesn't matter to football simulation and immersion.
There aren't huge graphical leaps for sure, but I do think even in the 4K video it still goes under appreciated that the next-gen version does just play smoother from an FPS standpoint.
Like playing from our hacked OS Broadcast cam just feels better and smoother on the PS5 over PS4.

Just to be clear the hacked OS Broadcast cam is the trick where you switch to a specific player then change views and it starts really wide broadcast and moves toward the field? You can snap it when you are comfortable with how much field is visible? Just checking. I wanted to make sure I am not missing out on anything.

Yeah, correct. On PC we could do more to just have a modified camera -- and it's silly we don't have more camera options on console either way -- but the same trick still works here.
I'm a relic from the 16 and 32-bit eras. Graphics exceeded my WILDEST expectations about a decade ago.
Is this REALLY, TRULY, what the audience wants? When fundamental aspects across the board aren't a worthy reflection of the NFL product?
    Beautiful though. Thanks.

When the CPU can't call an intelligent game? Having to run a cheat mode (All Madden) just to get the CPU to beat you.
When the most basic and simplistic coverages DO.NOT.WORK?
When a team with a 94 OVR QB drafts a QB in teh 1st round?
    Beautiful though. Thanks...................................

    Welcome :)

Still playing it on PC and wondering how you get the AI vs. AI game. I wanted to see how the AI was compared to the new gen and I can't seem to find a way to "not" assign a controller. Any direction would be helpful. Thanks.

You can't just leave both controllers in the middle? It just warns me that I don't have a team selected in play now games, but it lets me do it on console. I don't have Madden for PC this year because I knew it wasn't gonna get the next-gen free upgrade.
one day later I still gotta check what version I'm playing.
I do like the gameplay it's smoother but the graphics seem to just have added an adobe effect to make them stronger
Graphics aren’t necessarily just the way the visuals look, its everything detail about the game. I’ll admit the skin tones certainly look better but that’s about it.
I played a game in the rain, the rain visually looks good but has no effect whatsoever at all on the players are game. Yes I know EA said they haven’t tweaked weather to affect gameplay but their jerseys weren’t even wet nor dirty from playing in the rain.
When players are shown with their helmets off, their faces aren’t even wet from the rain. That sort of stuff takes you out of a game, especially when the game is going for realism.
Nothing too great, but I have enjoyed certain jerseys looking begged. The eagles green looks a lot more authentic in next gen. Along other teams like the Texans with their red. I play a decent amount w then and their red looked pinkish before but I like how it looks on NG.
I was really hoping they'd at least improve their snow on the ground so it wasn't simply white blobs with horrible edges. Look at gameplay of Madden 09 or '10 with snow games, for example. Somehow, their snow model was MUCH better 10+ years ago on consoles that are now two generations old.
When EA was promoting hard to buy the current Gen so you can get next gen fro free, we had to know this would be a patch at best. EA is not giving us anything for free.
I will give them credit that the game definitely “plays” better but they didn’t need new hardware for this.
I wouldn’t get your hopes up for 2022 either. This company has given up on innovation a long, long time ago.

Pop in Madden 25 on PS4. This game does not look a whole console generation better.

You are spot on as is the cat you quoted...it’s sad
But look at some of the posts here and see what theses gamers want and it will easily explain why EA is just getting fat on micro transactions, Ultimate team or Barnyard, or whatever, the newest “thing” they put out..
People are worried about “Mouthpieces” or cleats or sidelines ect....the game play really hasn’t changed IMO in years.....From the lack of AI sideline awareness to QB drop back glitch..to the lack of Franchise improvements....(still waiting for TRUE COACH mode and a face editor)...it is simply a complacency thing and EA is not the same company with Madden as it was 12 to 15 years ago.
I would of thought that by now this game would really rock, instead people can’t play slow slim ( a screwed up work around because of lack of COACH MODE) franchise because game CRASHES at end to blue screen....
I’m done hoping for a game we all want...I’m hoping now 2K will bring something to that table that resembles football...
Some of y’all bring the disappointment on yourself. Learn to temper those expectations and you’ll be a lot happier.
Madden will always be Madden. You gotta stop expecting NFL 2K, won’t happen until 2K can make a NFL Simulation game.
If you hate Madden, you’re gonna hate it for the years to come. Stop setting yourself up for such disappointment, you know better!!! Lol.

Anything 2k will put out (Simulation or not) I can assure you it will top Madden....as far as “losing my temper” not so, just expressing frustration, and realization that EA is going in another direction, don’t “Hate” anything except for lack of another football option to Madden and 2k will bring that.
lighting is better. images are slightly crisper. and I think in some of the comparisons, player movement, foot planting looks slightly better.
overall it doesn't move the needle for me. this might be what the graphics might have looked like next year on the ps4, if a new console wasn't released.
It's the EXACT same game just running on a newer graphics card.

Also no change to madden 20.
When I look at the video from OS (thanks for that, very good comparison!) and then watch a recording from my PC with Ultra-Settings, madden 20 looks still better.
It is also nothing that could not have been expected. It is still the same engine, EA hasn't changed anything. Most of the graphical updates are just cinematic cut scenes, which can be easily inserted with Frostbyte. The crowd still has the same quality, as I can see it in the videos, only in cut scenes it looks better now.
It's exactly what I wrote here months ago. The trailer just looked way too good to be anything other than cinematic cut scenes.
Sadly, I honestly feel that the majority of the "non graphic" improvements could have been done on previous gen. Sorry. It's just EA held out and made some of the physics changes only on next gen as a selling point. I don't really believe it's all because Next Gen can handle it now.
Hell...I want it just because of player movement myself but I'm not going $500 plus in the hole for this little upgrade. (The fact that I can't find a console solidifies my choice) Though I admit, the motion of the players alone is really intriguing! :)
I'll try to wait until next year and see if NBA2K, The Show and Madden are going to update their PC versions to the Next Gen engine. I swear if EA just releases Madden on PC using the old engine I will scream! Thanks. Rant over.
I took a closer look at the video. To be honest, I was a bit shocked by the quality of the graphics. To get the 60fps at 4k they probably turned off a lot of other things.
I can't see any sweat, the textures look very bad overall.

Compare this with the PC version of m20.
This is an ingame screenshot, you can see the sweat on Mixon's arms, and in the O-Line you can see the parts of the muscles, also in the D-Line and at the Tight End

The reflections on the helmets are also worse.
Once the sideline cutscene from the next gen video and two images from the PC version video

I love Barnyard, it's my favorite new Madden mode in a decade.
A new coat of paint is what it seems to me. Graphically they need to get to a point where the human body and the equipment are independent (proper jersey texture and physics, accessories that aren't literally textured on etc) in the worst way, and they also need to redo the player models from scratch IMO.

Sorry Chase, I am just frustrated ...No intent to knock how anyone plays this game ..and EA should continue with these types of modes , I would just love options so that Sim guys like me can enjoy a once fabulous game!

I just thought calling it Barnyard was worth responding to in a meme-y way, no worries.
