Not a huge fan of the new controls, but it's a great looking tennis game. A sure rental.

Has lost a lot of the "fun" from the Xbox original and Top Spin 2.

It's the best tennis game on the 360, stuck somewhere between sim and arcade. In general, the controls are an improvement over all past tennis games, but the "arcadey" risk shots need to go bye-bye. Oh, and the music is terrible. ("I got love for you if you were born in the 80s. I got hugs for you if you were born in the 80s." ARGGG!!!). The gameplay is fun, long rallies are common, and strategic use of the court is a must. Although the game needs to ramp up the difficulty level, the AI is generally smart -- that is, except for serve-and-volleyers, who seem to do a lot of stupid things (e.g. charging the net when they shouldn't, standing in no-man's land, completely missing volleys, never retreating to chase down lobs).

The career mode: perilously short, underwhelming, and none too difficult (even on "very hard" after you spend some quality time with it). The 130-player pro tour is broken -- only about 60 players compete each year. No option to change the set lengths. Tournament options are non-existent. No Davis cup. No end-of-year Masters finals. Not enough real professionals. No Wimbledon. No 5-set affairs.

Online: This is where the game has some legs. However, if you're looking for a realistic tennis match/tournament, you may be disappointed. Depends on who you play. A LOT of people have mastered the art of TS4 serving and are taking advantage of the wide-out serve on every point. I don't blame them...it's just a shame that developer PAM made it so easy to do. Destroys the realism for me.

Although this game is knida whoopin' me (although I got my first ace in what seems like forever in a tennis game), it's a lot of fun and looks really great. I actually like the controls although sometimes it doesn't seem to register when I release for a swing (it could be that my timing is inconsistent, I guess) I'm normally a career mode junkie which is what dips the score down a bit for me (I agree with the OS review that it's a bit weak). Overall a very good tennis game!
