The Best Sports Game of 2019: MLB The Show 19

The Best Sports Game of 2019 is MLB The Show 19. There was little to no argument from anyone on staff about this, and the same goes for the community vote. This should not come as a surprise to anyone who has been following our other awards because The Show has picked up the most awards in the lead up to this result.

You can say this award was given to The Show based on it being a weak year for the genre. You could say it was given to The Show because it’s simply consistent every single cycle. You could even say The Show is that comfortable game you can always turn on and play for a bit and know you will at least have a decent time. All of the above would apply, but I think The Show won because it has the best mix of gameplay and content.

The franchise mode is not the best (there is no online franchise mode either), and it does not have the best presentation. However, in every other way, it ranks at the top or near the top in all the big categories. MLB The Show 19 has the best career mode on consoles. It has the best card-collecting mode on consoles. It does not suffer from any online issues that other games in the sports genre don’t have (input lag, frame drops and so on). In short, you can turn the game on and usually find something to do.

For me, that was usually Diamond Dynasty, but for others it could be a variety of other things. Maybe you want to download the newest minor league rosters and start a new franchise. Maybe you want to continue your career mode from last year’s game and continue on your road to the HOF. Maybe you want to check out the new Moments and Inning Programs. The point is this game does the best at trying to cover all its bases, and it does so while delivering gameplay that provides a satisfying hitter-pitcher duel for the majority of people who play it.

No sports game is perfect, and that is especially true this year, but MLB The Show 19 does the best job at trying to provide a simulation baseball experience while still remaining fun to play. This is why it is the Operation Sports Game of the Year for 2019.

Community Vote – Best Sports Game Of 2019

  1. MLB The Show 19
  2. NBA 2K20
  3. Madden NFL 20

The community vote was also dominated by MLB The Show 19. It got 41 percent of the community vote. NBA 2K20 got 20 percent of the vote, and Madden NFL 20 got 13 percent of the vote. I’m not surprised by the first two selections, but I am a little surprised Madden crept up into third place. This may have been due to “other” sports game being right around 10 percent, so the votes were very spread out beyond the first two selections.

NBA 2K20 had a rough launch, and while some people loved the gameplay at the start of the year (myself included), that does not remain as true today. That same gameplay has become irksome for many, and it’s just been a frustrating year overall for the NBA 2K series.

Consistency remains key with The Show. There are plenty of gripes in the community as people desperately want more from franchise mode, and the return of online franchise mode. On top of that, plenty of people complain about the balance of the hitting engine in terms of what percentage of line drives should lead to hits, and just general questions about hitting feedback overall. All that being said, there is a general trust in The Show. You know what you’re getting from the game (for better or worse), and it’s easy to pick up and play each year.

Having the Full Minors is an added advantage for the game that adds on to the year-to-year hold the franchise has on people. Being able to bring saves from game to game, on top of being able to get attached to minor league players, creates an experience where people get truly invested in their players and teams. There’s plenty of work to be done with this series, but I think it’s easy to see a path where The Show has the most successful jump to next-generation consoles.

It’s going to be multi-platform in the next couple years so new audiences will get to play it for the first time in years. On top of that, I think it’s easy to argue it has the most balanced gameplay right now. Big changes absolutely should happen with the gameplay engine, but the point is it feels stable where it is right now. No other game right now has gameplay that is nearly as consistent as The Show.

With The Show, you know what the problems are and there are certainly ways they could be fixed in the future. With every other sports game, the path to excellent and consistent gameplay is not as clear. The audiences for those games are not as united on how the gameplay should work moving forward. You also have more competitive play on those consoles, and so the balance between offline and online AI is another tricky element to balance out.

It’s not that The Show doesn’t have a widespread audience, but people are consistent in what they want on the whole. They want better animations in the field, and they want better hitting feedback to make line drives make more sense. They want pitching to be a little more consistent, and they want a better franchise mode. Lastly, they want more from the presentation.

Be that as it may, people in the community come back to this game more than any other simulation sports game, and that’s why it won the OS Community’s Sports Game of the Year Award.

  1. Gameplay wise.... yes. But unless your into DD this has become one of the shallowest titles with not much to do. Franchise hasn’t improved or added anything in almost five years. This is the first year I have started skipping yearly titles I haven’t skipped in 20 plus years, and honestly it’s liberating. I have been buying the show every year since ‘06 (mvp before that). But with Ridin taking a step back from doing the full minors and the minimal improvements to Franchise the last few years, I am less then optimistic for this year
Hands-down agree that this game is the best overall sports package out there; having already (correctly) won for the best player career mode, and card collecting mode.
It doesn't have the best franchise mode on the menu side, but when you combine the whole package (gameplay, presentation, and menu mode stuff), it is the most complete franchise mode out there. Other franchise modes (2k, NHL, Madden) suffer greatly due to sub-standard gameplay (i.e. gameplay geared around the H2H crowd) and/or non franchise-centered presentation and come nowhere close to competing with MLB. Unless you're one of those people who just like simming a lot (in which case, why on Earth aren't you playing OOTP?), I don't think it's that difficult of a choice.
By time MLB 20 launches, I'm guessing I will have put anywhere between 800-1000 hours into the game and I've been ramping-UP my MLB time.

I actually quit buying MLBTS 2 yrs ago because of this. Franchise mode is all I care about, and unless Im missed something, Franchise mode is almost the same as it was on the PS3, actually it has less, because the PS3 had more Spring Training ball parks.
I have went the OOTP route, although I do miss actually playing baseball, where I have some control over whether each pitch and each at bat is a success or failure, but from a management side of things, and getting quality stats in Franchise, you cant beat OOTP. I would never expect a console game, to be as deep in the management side of things, as OOTP, and while I do miss playing MLBTS, as the 1 thing you can count on with MLBTS each yr, is things working as intended, unlike with Madden and NBA2k.
Im hoping once the new consoles, that there is enough power in those new consoles, for the MLBTS devs too take Franchise mode to new heights. As it is now, I feel they have gone the same route as these other sports games, and its all about online play and fantasy gimic modes. So unless MLBTS20 has had major upgrades to Franchise mode, I will likely just wait to see what the game is like once the new consoles come out.
There is a chance, due to how all the sports video games have gone the route of gimic fantasy modes and all about online play, and Franchise mode being a afterthought that my console gaming days may be over. Hoping these companies see the worst trends in sports games on here, and take it to heart, and get a renewed focus on Franchise modes, because all 3 major sports, that I play, basketball, baseball and football, have really dropped the ball on Franchise mode, in Maddens case its been probably better than a decade since Franchise was any good, lol.
Gameplay,Stadiums,Ball Physics and overall graphics the best for sure!!!
Everything else not so sure about being the best.
MLB The Show 19 is the best baseball video game to date in my opinion but it still has a LONG way to go to be a perfect 10!
Based on what I expect from current end of this gen and heading into next gen I would rate MLB The Show 19 a very good solid 6 out of 10!
I'm only a casual baseball fan but personally I love Road to the Show. It's MUCH better than NBA 2K's career mode and I'm a big basketball guy. Gameplay is just really solid too imo.

I love RTTS and Franchise mode but they do only improve minimally. I decided after The Show 18 to skip 19 and wait for The Show to be on the PS5. And even then, probably won't get it until the 2nd year on the PS5 because sports games never do much in that first year. So sheesh, I'll probably hop back in The Show 22...
Easy choice. It best represents the sport it is trying to among all the major sports games.
I play this game year round. 19 is so good too. Everytime I it down to play it....I have a wonderful time. No other sports game does what The Show can for me in terms of playing smooth, having a great and deep franchise and being totally invested into my team.
And for those not taking advantage of Sounds of The Show you are missing out on probably one of the most immersive features in terms of presentation. It adds a massive layer of feeling like you are at the ball park (batter walkups, vendor yells, team chants, stadium sounds specific to that team etc) and watching a game on TV with between innings theme music, whether that is regional sports broadcasts (Fox Spots, Yes Network etc) or a major network broadcast (ESPN, FOX Baseball, TBS etc).
I have many complaints. Very many. But I only complain because I love. I wouldn't be here in the OS MLB forums of I didn't love. I wouldn't bother with my time.
My willingness to post is directly related to how much I love the game. Do you see me posting in any other sports game forum?

MLB & Sony are sitting on an untapped gold mine inside an oil field, yearly sales should rival Madden, FIFA & NBA2K. if Sony will just do a little more investing of developers, not only can they finally flesh out and deepen the basic current franchise mode, they could expand the DD cash cow/golden goose and really make bank. what SDS has done with DD is fantastic but IMO its the tip of the iceberg and the potential is almost unlimited. when the Show goes multi-platform, I think moving 5 million plus units in a nation of 330 million is attainable. the future is bright, greatness awaits.
    also, game of the year?
The Show is not a game. it is a way of life. and it is no mere sport. for all the hoopla the NFL has created in the last 50 years, baseball is a pastime, with games every day of the week for 6 months. the NFL may own Sundays but MLB's 2430 games a year to choose from is almost ten times the amount the NFL can offer with a paltry 256 games. To paraphrase and fix Annie Savoy's thoughts, ‘‘I believe in the sanctuary of baseball. The only sport that truly feeds the soul day in day out is the Game of Baseball.’’

This. If you don't want to bear the, in my opinion, repetitive, oft time irritating and annoying announcing, this is the way to go. I'm currently searching for new stuff for MLB The Show 2020.
That said, agree, MLB The Show 19 deserves this recognition.

Exactly how I feel about the game , and the love is my reason for continuing to play through all my frustrations with the game and why I am still here . Well said ! I play nba 2k and nhl until I get frustrated but then I don’t play anymore, this game I still can’t stop long even though I am mad at it.
I just wish we had more player customization. specifically player models and the ability to customize all stances, equipment and pitching motions in M2O and RTTS
