Super Mega Baseball 2 Releases on May 1, New Gameplay Mechanics Video and DLC Information Revealed

Metalhead Software has announced Super Mega Baseball 2 is scheduled to release on May 1, for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC (Steam) for $29.99.

Along with the official release date announcement, the team has released a new Super Mega Baseball 2 gameplay video, featuring 7 minutes of core gameplay footage, including a deep explanation of improvements to the game’s baseball simulation and on-field mechanics.

NOTE: This is pre-release footage from April 2018. There may be differences in the final version.

Some of the features you’ll see in the game include:

  • Overhauled presentation including 8 stadiums built from the ground up, more realistically scaled character models, and new, more athletic player animations
  • Comprehensive customization of leagues, team logos and uniforms, and player gear
  • New competitive and co-operative online modes, utilizing dedicated servers
  • Cross-platform play between PC and Xbox One, and between PC and PS4
  • Refined baseball simulation with visceral physics and realistic play outcomes
  • Enhanced image quality on Xbox One X and PS4 Pro

The team will also release three DLC packs with additional cosmetic customization content on launch day, as an optional way for fans to show added support (ranging from $3.49 – $4.49 USD).

  1. Can't wait! Glad they made me eat my words about expecting a June release. We definitely need a sub-forum for SMB 2.
Everybody: what are your favorite NEW team ideas you're going to create in SMB2?

I'm messing around with the idea of having an all women team. Because why not!

Pretty impressive the customization options in this game will legitimately make that an option! The depth of customization is insane.
Less than two weeks away!! I held off on buying The Show for this game. It's just not worth $60 at all. I finally get to play a new baseball game that actually looks and feel new at half the price!

Major League (filling in roster with characters from other baseball movies)
A League of Their Own (same - filling in roster with other fictional female baseball players)
    Democrats
    Republicans
    Game of Thrones
    Star Wars
    Orange is the New Black
    The Office
    Lost
    Rock Stars
    Pop Stars
    Rap Stars
Whether I'll have time to create any of these teams is another question.

I usually make rosters comprised of baseball movie characters/teams. That's what I did in the original SMB, as well as in the beta. Unfortunately, all the beta creations are cleared, but I'll definitely recreate in the release version.

I take it that you guys who got in the beta are NDA'd?
Lucky though....looks like a really fun game, and I'll definitely get it day one.

    Yup. Still NDA'd.
I'm really liking the beta, but I can't go into more detail than that lol
This is the perfect game to re create my little league team and teams we played when I was a kid. My old man has all of the old score books from the games. This is going to be a blast!

Could you imagine how good a hockey game by these guys would be?? The customization and fun realism. I can only hope its on their plate

Very tempting- Im sure it will be loads of fun but just don't have time for 2 baseball games. I resisted it for a long time- but a 3 inning conquest game in mlb show is my quick baseball fix now when I don't have time for a full game.
The gameplay changes alone are astounding.
The first game was great, and now with online play and the customization available, it is a no-brainer purchase!
Day one buy and I cannot wait. The amount of improvements is astounding. May 1st can’t come soon enough.

I wish there was a SMB version for every sport. Hockey would be an absolute blast and I feel it would be the perfect fit for what they've done with baseball.
A fun boxing game would be a trip too. Especially with mechanics like mojo, fitness, injuries, etc.
Have been looking forward to this one for a while...Wish it had the MLB license (MLB AM should just work w/ these guys instead of doing RBI Baseball). Loving the customization.
Will say...$30 is a little more than I was hoping for...and they're launching with paid DLC...I dunno...
on the other hand, I'll probably play it more than I play some $60 games, so...

MLB should at least look into a partnership where they can release MLB DLC content.
On a side note, someone mentioned Little League.
It would be really cool if these guys eventually added a LL mode where you have to build a powerhouse and get to the LL World Series.

I got more enjoyment out of the original than I have any $60 game in recent memory... $30 + dlc is a steal imo. I value a quality game way more than a license that adds $30 to the price.

I hope they never agree to any sort of MLB tie-in. The first game was born of pure love of the game of baseball and didn’t need MLB teams or stadiums to make it great. If they spend a cent on anything MLB (teams, players, stadiums, etc.) it will shift the focus away from simply making a great baseball game. It’s a beautiful thing right now... why try to change that?
If any of you have been wondering what us in the beta have been experiencing, here you go:
Looks like they gave this guy special permission to talk about it.
Here's the link if you just want to watch it on Youtube:

    Auto base running?
Seems fielding is sort of assisted w/manual throw?

If you let go of the stick in SMB1, they helped the direction and the finetuning of being under a ball. The outfield was a fun little adventure for sure.

Absolutely! It definitely added to the fun factor.
I’m digging the new graphical style. I liked the old look but didn’t love it. The new look is still fun and doesn’t take itself too seriously but is more refined. Slightly larger ballpark dimensions seems like a good thing too... if it keeps a few more balls in the yard defense will be emphasized.
An aside: I’m psyched that the Platipi made it back this year. Hopefully Beefcake McStevens is still on the roster. That guy was great.
    Can rosters/teams be shared?
Also, in a video one of the developers said: "Depending on which mode you choose to play, directly editing the skills of a player as well as choosing batting and throwing handedness is an option." Does anyone know which modes this is good for? There is Exhibition, Series, Matchmaking and Season. I'm hoping this does work for season in case I wanted to create a custom league with players of a certain caliber. I would totally understand why this wouldn't be allowed in Matchmaking.
Finally, will this game be sold on disc or only digitally?
    Thanks.

As far as I'm aware there is no roster/logo/etc sharing.
Regarding attributes the only limitation I've heard about is that custom teams can't be used in the pennant race mode (online competitive matchmaking).
    And it's digital only.
I was 90% sure I would get the game, and after seeing it's essentially a refined SMB2 with more options and the same great play and ego system, I'm 100% sure now.

    How about auto base running?
    KnightTemplar
    How about auto base running?

Are you asking if it's an option, or if it's the norm?
I can't tell you if it's an option, but you do manual baserunning by default.
The first game had a weird bug where sometimes if I retreated a runner back to a bag and held R1 while doing it (you'd understand why if you liked to watch the little spinny cycle thing), once you were on the bag and if the CPU got the ball on the bag, your runner would sometimes slightly leave that bag and then automatically be tagged out as a result. I can't explain it; I'd have to capture it. Maybe others have run across this issue and can explain it a little better.
By the way, did anyone else have trouble pitching in SMB1 by not using power pitching all of the time? For whatever weird reason that was the only way I was able to pitch effectively.
    Blzer

personally, I'm mixing up my pitches between power/regular.
i'm now at ego 85 pitching.
    KnightTemplar
    How about auto base running?

If the Ego for baserunning is low enough, it's basically "semi-auto". The game will handle a lot of baserunning, though I don't think there's any "full auto" mode like in The Show.
Plus, it will be more forgiving/responsive when you do make actions.

I didn't, but I didn't play on the highest ego settings. I believe I settled in around 62-63 for pitching ego.
I'm hoping the next feature they add, which might be next year, is online leagues. I love small leagues, and playing this with 7 other friends, with 14 or 28 games schedules would be a blast.
Really looking forward to seeing the online play, and if it can support this. Feels like Metalhead are doing this right.

I sat around 95 ego for pitching, and found power pitching significantly easier to hit my spots with, due to being able to "stop" the reticle at any time. In the gameplay reveal video, Scott Drader (dev) mentions a new balance between power pitches and regular pitches, so we'll see what that means exactly.

Do we know anything about how multiple seasons/franchise/career mode will be handled? Draft, trades, stat-tracking?

It's more of a pick up and play game not a full on baseball sim. It will track stats and those stats will carry over from season to season but there is no trading/draft/etc.
Also there is no career mode.
edit: Just to mention for clarity there is some management aspects in the game such as dealing with injuries and some line up management (shown in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=689AtbWlUbw&t) but it just won't be an in depth sim like you would find in other games.

What kind of things do you guys think will be included in the dlc packs available at launch?

It's all customization stuff. Specifically from a comment they made on twitter
"They contain customization content like additional logo components, pre-made team designs, player tattoos and new styles of eyewear"
    You did indeed!

Found the rosters online for Bases Loaded (a NES game I loved as a kid). It details the pitchers era, players average and home runs. Should make it pretty easy to edit the players from BL to SMB 2. Think I’ll roll with those. Looking forward to May 1st!

^ Awesome, the video addresses right off the bat that you can edit all player skills and such.
Also nice to see that behind-the-scenes the attributes are on a 0-99 scale.
    looks amazing.
but.,. seems like the camera is panned out too far now.
Maybe its because the fields are bigger, but I hope there is a way to make the camera follow the ball closer like it did in the first one.
When I look on Xbox Live it says coming soon, I don't get a lot of games but don't remember ever seeing "coming soon" message before.. It does have release date of May 1 listed in details. Just found it odd.

According to a dev post on Reddit, PS4 version releases in NA at 8 AM PST. Euro release will go by Regional midnights. Steam at midnight PST. Haven't seen anything about XBOX time yet.

Pennant Race (online mode) games are 5 innings...not sure how I feel about that. Also a mercy rule, plus a strange rule where a total of 20 runs scored (both teams) makes the next inning the final one.
Seems like MetalHead's concerned about the length of games too.
Windows 7 players might want to wait until the known issue (and confirmed by devs) preventing the game from starting on Windows 7 is fixed to buy.

Can anyone break down what specifically is in the leadoff bundle, so I can decide whether or not to purchase? For about $10 more, it's kind of a hefty price tag.

Considering the "Bold" bundle is just 10 or so tattoos and 10 or so added sunglasses for $4.49, I'd argue "hefty" to be fairly accurate.
