NBA 2K20 MyCAREER Trailer and Behind the Scenes Video with SpringHill Entertainment

2K has partnered up with SpringHill Entertainment, a company created by LeBron James and Maverick Carter, for the production and creative control of NBA 2K20’s MyCAREER cinematic narrative: “When The Lights Are Brightest.”

This year’s narrative features the storyline of an NBA prospect named Che on his quest for gold both on and off the court, covering the importance of mentors, dealing with off-court pressures and current social issues. In this game setting, the path to stardom is firmly in the gamers hands.

The cinematic narrative was directed by up-and-coming visionary Sheldon Candis, and features a star-studded cast including Idris Elba, Rosario Dawson, and NBA all-stars past and present. This is the most visually stunning MyCAREER cinematic experience to date and brings the journey to life in a completely new and immersive way.

Check out the NBA 2K20 MyCAREER trailer below, along with some behind the scenes footage with Maverick Carter (Executive Producer), Taylor Materne (Writer), Jamal Henderson (President of Springhill Entertainment) and Sheldon Candis (Director), as they discuss the making of “When the Lights Are Brightest”.

SpringHill Entertainment Produces Star-Studded Cinematic Narrative for the NBA 2K20 MyCAREER Mode “When the Lights Are Brightest”

Today, 2K is sharing details of their partnership with SpringHill Entertainment – the award-winning content company created by LeBron James and Maverick Carter –  which includes the production and creative control of NBA 2K20’s MyCAREER cinematic narrative: “When The Lights Are Brightest.” Known for such productions as What’s My Name: Muhammad Ali, More Than a Game and The Wall, SpringHill Entertainment collaborated with the Visual Concepts team to write, direct, and cast this year’s storyline for the fan-favorite video game mode.

“The story of ‘When The Lights Are Brightest’ in NBA 2K20 reflects the story of today’s modern athletes,” said Maverick Carter, CEO of SpringHill Entertainment and athlete empowerment company UNINTERRUPTED. “From dealing with the pressures of fame, demands on and off the court, and outside influences, athletes face a tremendous amount of obstacles. SpringHill Entertainment exists to tell compelling stories and in this case, we were able to draw on our own experiences with LeBron and other athletes to create a narrative that’s authentic and a bit of a peek behind the curtain. Fans of NBA 2K20 are going to be amazed at the level of detail we were able to get to in this film.”

With SpringHill Entertainment’s focus on delving deeper into the personal story of the main character, players of this year’s MyCAREER mode will experience an even more authentic and emotive story.

“An entire film made entirely of video game scenes has never been done in this way before,” said Alfie Brody, Vice President of Global Marketing at NBA 2K. “We decided to partner with SpringHill Entertainment because as an athlete-led production company, they authentically understand basketball culture and created a totally unique cinematic experience that encapsulates the reality facing the game’s next prospects. What we were able to accomplish in this year’s MyCAREER mode is an example of what’s ‘NEXT’ in moviemaking and in gaming.”

The full-length version of “When The Lights Are Brightest” will be available to experience first-hand when NBA 2K20 is released worldwide on September 6, 2019.

  1. Impressed. It looks they got better story writers of late. I actually liked the story mode from last year, so it looks like I'll be playing it again this year. I'll just treat this as a SP campaign mode until it becomes "100%" the MyPlayer mode.
EDIT: I hope that the story mode is mostly front-loaded. I understand that Kareem and Shaq had made cameo appearances in NBA 2K19, but I didn't get that far with the MyCareer mode.
Man 2k getting some big time actors now...
INB4 "STOP WASTING MONEY ON BIG TIME ACTORS AND FIX YOUR SERVERS!"
    Also Urkel sighting...
I was hoping Haley Joel Osment would return as that sleazy agent....

2k making alot money from people who bought VC microtranscation and game sold over 10 millions copies in almost every year but no wondering why they can't upgrade better server for My Park and My League online

Agreed, 2k19 storyline was really good and I admit that final "whats my name?" "A! I!" really got me emotionally.
Looks like they mo capped everybody doing their lines rather than just syncing the faces up and having them do some weird random body movements and it looks so much better for it.
    I’m pretty excited for this.

Wow!  The level of detail, the amount of depth this game has is astonishing!  Kudos to you 2K for leading the way and showing how it's supposed to be done!  I'm blown away at the amount of content in this game!  All other sports games need to take notes!

Look at my phone I guess.

oh ok i don't think i gonna play this mode due to VC coins to buy for increase created player's attribute rating. no thank.. VC Microtransaction is very bad

According to some people...NBA 2K needs "competition" to get better, but it seems like NBA 2K is its own competition.
I don't play these modes but I definitely subscribe to the "Rising tide lifts all boats" philosophy that SmirkinDirk mentioned recently.
Funniest part? Years ago here (2K8 or 2K9ish) there was a segment of people who really supported adding RPG and story elements to sports games--and if you know anything about Immersion you understood how successful it would be. I'll just never forget the people who shouted it down talking about how no one wanted that stuff/would play it lol.
Is this guy a CAP or someone scanned his face? If it's a CAP that looks really good...I liked last years but if they improved it even more then this is great news for the CAP makers.

    He’s a scanned actor
Didn't think there'd be a cooler Stephon in the game than Marbury or Curry but they got Stephon Urkel!
Normally not much on story based career modes but I did enjoy 2k19's story so I'm definitely going to at least give this one a try. Pretty excited about it to be honest. From all the rumors about college and draft combine returning this is looking to be a pretty decent year on the MyCareer side. I always put more hours into MyLeague BUT Career always get a decent amount of hours out of me as well.

yeah i just hate waste time to grind VC too if i don't like to buy VC. it hard to score more than 20 points and hard to defend best scorer by 70 overall rating and has low rating on FG, 3 point, stamina and defense

Technically, MyCareer is a RPG game. Like any RPG game, you start out with nothing, and you have to build/grind your characters accordingly. What fun would Final Fantasy be if you could get all the good weapons/spells/items within the first 3 hours of the game?
And let's be real...MOST videogames have some form of a progression model.

yeah i know but does NBA live 19's The One has microtransaction or skill points by game performance for increase their created player attribute rating ? if you play bad in NBA game then your coach will not let you play more minutes and sit on the bench until game finish then see how good is your game performance : if it is bad then VC give you less like 500 based on your teammate grade

It looks like they really put an emphasis on the story. I can't remember how far I got into 2k19s story, but I'll definitely see this one to the end.

Personally, I only played 10 games of the first season then stopped. I just can't get into playing against the AI in any sports games. Correct me if I'm wrong, I figured that would be 95% of the storyline and everything else would be mostly cameos. The NBA 2K19's storyline got me fired up, because the one dude was just working on my last nerves. Loved the scene about the fireworks, lol.
HOLY **** this looks incredible! Shout out 2K really bringing it with my career this year!
Man, I had absolutely no intentions of playing my career this year but they got me

I don't believe so, but NBA Live is in a different situation to be fair. They're just trying to be relevant again. In a different timeline where if NBA Live and NBA 2K were the 1 and 2 top basketball games, I can't see NBA Live NOT implementing some form of microtransactions in their game. They tried to implement loot boxes in Battlefront 2.
Good lord a my career trailer and here somebody crying about Vc.

Would prefer more generic story we could have multiple story lines.
    1. 5 star recruit coming out of high school dealing with the pressure of being a #1 pick. (You don’t get to chose what team drafts you)
    2. Fringe player making his way through the G league (you get to choose what team you want to be.)
    3. Foreign player (Luka Doncic) who has to adjust to living in the states.
This would make multiple play throughs interesting
I cant really say much about the Mycareer mode , because I dont really play it to be honest, so am just here to show my appreciation for the hard work and dedication the team over at VC is doing withing 7 months or so of development...start studded line up of actors/actress in this mode...plus the production level is very impressive
    well done 2k!!!
I'm really liking how the story is looking. It looks to be the most In depth we had. I still don't like that we can't get a realistic nickname. Che isn't as bad, but wish we got a better name. Love that Rosario Dawson is in it lol.
Hopefully it last longer then the whole "Prelude" style story as previous years.

i thought you were a mod...you work over at 2k then? why does it bother you what people have to say on a forum lol.

Because the whole point of a thread is to separate topics. And VC has nothing to do with this.
In the broader spectrum of MyCareer it does but it has nothing to do with this trailer.
    loso_34
i thought you were a mod...you work over at 2k then? why does it bother you what people have to say on a forum lol.

Because this isn't a thread for VC discussion. There's already one for that. However I will say to 23 and anybody else that it's probably best just to not reply if someone brings VC up because then the thread gets even more off-topic with the back and forth.

Come on man, you know what he meant. There's no reason to derail every thread in this forum to rant about VC.
That being said, how do we get 2K to submit MyCareer to Cannes Film Festival?

Seems like to me that NBA 2K is trying to make those COD yearly numbers, so the generic storyline wouldn't appeal to a large group of people. The people that don't care about storylines can just skip the cutscenes, but this is geared towards people that don't mind "dabbling" with MyCareer; however, these people are not full-blown fans of the mode that eventually leads to MyPark and ProAm.

The nickname is certainly more common and realistic than past iterations. Ernesto "Che" Guevara obviously being the most famous example but it wouldn't make sense for a white male myplayer lol...
The decision for the nickname may very well have been made by the Spring Hill guys and LeBron's camp because Che Guevara is held in fairly high esteem in the hip-hop community despite his demonization by the majority of mainstream western media / society.
Also I highly doubt a super capitalistic company like Take 2 would choose a communist Marxist revolutionary to be its MyCareer nickname pick LOL...
But Ill take anything over being called AI or DJ to be perfectly frank...

I’ve been on this site for a long time now, longer than that date on my profile says, and I will always appreciate the way people on here are able to see the smallest but most important details in everything. Didn’t even notice that lol.
I’ve been really trying to be less enthusiastic about this game as I have in years past and not preorder early but dammit I’m preordering today. This story looks great, all the great actors/actress. Only thing I can see I dislike is the name thing but Che is better than all of the last ones we’ve had. Once I know more of what that myplayer builder is like I’ll be even happier.

Also better than Pres or Frequency Vibrations. I don't know what Spike Lee was thinking with that one lol

oh joy.  a Lebron James scripted, social justice driven  narrative.  Yay!  Can't wait to play.  Just kidding.  Think I'll be passing on my career this year.  Lebron ruins everything.
Wait, the nickname is Che? lol
Going to take a while to think of something that corresponds to having that nickname.
I personally kinda like A.I. and D.J. because you can at least pick out names that use those as initials.

I don't know why they can't just call us dude or man or something throughout the cut scenes instead of forcing a nickname on us (especially since we can change the nickname that the announcers call us for example anyways).
I understand what they're going for with almost all of the creative decisions they make when it comes to this stuff, but I don't really get the nickname thing personally.
At any rate, I've learned to shrug it off. After hearing "Fresh squeeze!" and "Presidential Pardon!" millions of times the past few years, DJ and AI felt like major upgrades to me lol.

Is it me or is the facial tech a little better this time around? Scottie looked good at the end and I guess it's because they were able to include him in the story, they were able to maybe touch up his face just a little bit in-game.

They look absolutely amazing. The only thing that sucks is that non-scanned players will stand out even more, but that's for a different discussion. Either way I'm super excited to actually play through the story this year for the first time.

Because it might seem like we will get a prelude type of story where once you get to NBA you might only get a few cut scenes here and there. Will it just be a 2-3 hour story and just cut scenes? Thats one thing I liked about 2k15-18(didn't play 14) was the story lasted the whole rookie season. I'm sure they might allow you just to skip to NBA after you completed it already on a different build. So I don't see why they would pour all them resources into something that can be skipped entirely. Last year you could skip it entirely as long as you just started the prelude .

The game or at least the hype has ended up becoming a cultural thing.
I see Scottie Pippen, Idis Elba, Jaleel White acting in the game.
Pippen a few years back denied 2K to even use his likeness, but after some love and money massaging he gave the okay, and now he's apart of MyCareer.
Its pretty crazy how current and past stars are so involved.

    Fully agree.
Wish they would just share that tech. It would make face scanning issues a thing of the past. There probably people who do more than 10+ scans just to get a decent face

That tech is too old to work with what 2K has so its not even a question.
If you're not using pixel gun tech then it wont be the exact same, but over this little bit seeing some of the actual scans are pretty noice.
I thought last year was pretty cool considering, but this year may be even better
last years story was the best ever imo so I'm glad to see they are telling another more serious story then the silly ones from a few years ago. Its looks really good I'll def be playing this one till the end of it.

But Ill take anything over being called AI or DJ to be perfectly frank...

intrigued to see how 2k/spring hill try and find a way to make the capitalistic use of Che's name somehow resonant with his actual fundamental ethos...
ngl. not keen on this approach - i think it feels opportunistic, cheap and misjudged.
i really hope they prove me wrong, and its not like i'm expecting anything of quality from MyCareer stories, but if I'm playing a game and there is a story, please don't force me to make decisions that aren't related to basketball and also don't do the complexities of sacrifice justice.
if they throw 2 fingers at the NCAA i can stomach that, if they just try and make it about personal accountability against a single figure of oppression, they can miss me with this.
(still gonna play but still hoping all scenes are skippable)
‘Che’ is just a Spanish expression. I’m sure Che Guevara was the inspiration behind it, but even the use of Che as a nickname was only because he used to use it a lot. It’s basically an older version of ‘dude’. So when they refer to you as Che in the game, just imagine that they’re calling you dude.

Didn’t know every athlete grew up millionaires.

I think that's exactly what you'll get. There's no way they would actually make a political statement or even a statement against the NCAA.
They're sticking with the "more than an athlete" message but it still has to be palatable for this platform. "Standing up" for your injured buddy or whatever isn't comparable to what the real Che did, but it's still a positive message. Can't be mad at that.

As if you become blind to world issues as soon as your back account hits a certain number. Bizarre.
As long as there is no token female Asian friend screaming in every cutscene, I'm good. I kinda long for a more traditional MyCareer where you can kind of decide your own fate after a brief stint in the NCAA or abroad. Maybe in the future we can decide how to develop our personality and such. I feel it would be a welcomed addition if it's possible. PS5 goals?

It's called "alienating half your potential audience."
I don't want to be lectured about how evil I am for not doing enough.
All that does is detract from what may well be a very solid game.
There's a reason MLB stays out of this entirely.

Why would half of an audience be alienated? What are you even upset about? Is it use of the phrase "social issues"? That could mean a lot of different things.
And yes, there are a few reasons why MLB is able to "stay out of" the discussion on current issues. Not sure what that has to do with NBA 2k20.

thats why i'm mad at it.
coz its a thing thats so not it but yet, i "can't be mad at that"
thats why 'standing up for what you believe in' means less - coz me choosing to recycle can now be seen as me taking a stance against our global waste problem when really its one small step towards a much larger, important issue that we should all do something about.
    thing i'm intrigued by...
is when will 2k start letting us make choices?
like in 2k16 i was so mad that i couldn't cut my homie off. dude was so annoying and was trying to ruin my career, i'd have cut that weasel out as soon as the GM mentioned him as a negative.
same in 2k17 - i got michael b jordan traded - just to see what it'd do to the narrative.
in this, i'd love to be given the choice of standing up for my teammate or being selfish.
i think if 2k wants to moralise and try and give gamers a snapshot of the real life issues athletes can face, they need to actually up the ante in terms of narrative choices. let us feel the ramifications for our decisions, so that we can actually have empathy for the characters.
its weird to see 2k talk about mycareer story like its anything but advertising lol

I'm just happy that Summer league and Draft combine are back. Like man. It's been a while.

I agree, thats something I've been wanting for years now. I hope it is not something real quick and brief. I hope it is more than one SL game. Looks like there will be a AAU team. But didn't see NCAA despite the other video saying that he is a 4 year man and not leaving after Freshman or Sophmore year.

I agree. It would be nice to have less of linear story and more of a choice-based branching storyline. I'm tired of the immature and entitled protagonists.
I feel like the big hint at choices was when your team mate says his scholarship was revoked. I imagine you get the choice then of sitting out to show support for him or play, alienating your friend in the process. That seems logical enough to me.

I like that Che isn't a one and done. But I do wish we could have played all 4 years or at least choose to go back. Like in MLB the Show.
Also looks like Bay City is a fake college. We're probably gonna play against fake colleges if 2k didn't want to pay for NCAA licensing. I don't really care tbh as long as they get the atmosphere right.

Well 2k20 leaks posted a pic that there is a AAU team that name is Bay City and has a similar logo.

I acknowledge I'm in the minority but that was actually one of my favorite things about the original MyPlayer mode. It was pretty bare bones by comparison to today's version but I at least felt I was in control of what kind of person I wanted to be. I tapped out the moment the linear storylines kicked in. Totally did not see MyPlayer taking that turn all those years ago.

Not that interested in the “movie-like” storyline that 2K does for MyCAREER, but I like that they’re going in a more realistic direction. Hopefully things like the combine and Summer League are fully playable and actually impact where our player is drafted and his initial role.
The only thing that worries me about that trailer is the scripted storyline of your guy choosing to sit out games. That’ll probably cause us to get drafted in a certain range regardless of performance and we’ll be forced into a specific backstory, which isn’t ideal
I just want my player’s career to unfold organically. I want to be able to get picked #1 or go undrafted. I want my decisions and performance to impact all that. If I’m a late pick/undrafted, I want to have to fight for a roster spot or G-League. I want variety.
I also want full control of off-the-court decisions. Choosing agents, building relationships, etc. Different agents have different abilities and connections. Becoming tight with certain players/coaches can lead to team ups or opportunities down the line. That’d be sick.
Bottom line, I think it’d be best to focus more on giving the USER maximum control over their experience rather than trying to entertain them for 45 min with glitzy cutscenes and a scripted story. That’s why MyLEAGUE is so much more popular than MyGM. That’s just my 2 cents :)

So because NBA players have money they can’t tackle social issues?
I guess we should ignore that school LeBron’s foundation built to provide free education through high school to kids from his home town, incidentally highlighting the lack of affordable quality education in the US?
    Nah, **** him. He’s a millionaire.
Funnily enough Che Guevara grew up in a much more comfortable home life than most NBA players would have, and it was only through his family connections he was able to work his way through political circles in Latin America and eventually Cuba.
Personally, I'm not really big on the social issues thing either. It's not that I don't think celebrities should or shouldn't speak out I just don't think they should hold themselves to some higher regard than any other person.
But yea, that being said if it becomes too much a part of the story is probably when I'll start skipping scenes.
    hi all,
i got a little lost in the news recently, is there any news about the storyline?
Is it unique or can it change depending on how your career progresses?

    no one says that
its just sad that social issues are now just a marketing angle to exploit for profit.
it used to be that social issues were highly unprofitable and that people would have to actually sacrifice things to make changes they believe in.
its just a sad state of society that this is the story in 2k before we can actually control our players' destinies.
I am 0% a MyCareer person..... but I have to say, that was a fantastic trailer. Star power all over it and very well put together (minimal cheese).
I might even dabble this year - but good for you MyCareer fans. I'm sure there'll be an enjoyable experience in there this year for y'all.
......or what if the character is named Che, because that's his name and there's no deeper meaning behind it? LBJ had a teammate at SVSM they called 'Che'. Goodness, lol
MyCareer has certainly come a long way.
I remember being bored with splash screens after big games saying "you did good!" and asking for more but I never thought it would get to this level.

So at 1:18 The player is sitting next to what looks like Mark Cuban..... Does that mean we finally get owners in the game??* That could be big for GM Mode.

I wouldn't assume that. Seems more likely that it's just a one-off cut scene just like the ones where Kareem comes to your locker room, Shaq comes to your home, etc.

I wonder what happens when the story ends? I don’t mind the cinematic stories, I just wish they would have a secondary mode that allows you to write your own path. I miss the good old high school, to college to pro method of 16. I just wanted them to expand on that. Play more high school games and be given a wider selection of colleges based on your high school career. Maybe give the option of going to big named program or selecting a small program and building it up. Something a little more organic than a linear story. But I am not going to say I’m not excited about this though. I just hate when story modes end and there is nothing tying your story experience to your career afterwards.

I'm not exactly an expert but I would imagine it'd take a lot of time to make a dynamic story that would go on for years. My personal preference is to not really have much of a story but to have random things that happen to you that you have to adjust to like being traded or drafted to a team you don't want. I still think The Show has the best career mode of any sports game imo. I'm not even a baseball guy but I buy the show every other year or so just to play the career mode.

This has gone way off topic at this point. People need to stop crying about the social issues point, especially since we have virtually no idea how it’s even going to manifest in the game considering the only issue we’ve had hinted at is the NCAA not securing student athletes in the case of serious injuries.

It's not "semantics." It's literally two different scenarios. The media is giving him credit for funding a school. In reality, he contributed. Again, it's a great gesture--and more money than I have given, but it's not just semantics.

So the school isn't entirely funded by LeBron...what point are you trying to get across?
Would this school exist without him taking the lead? Did he have a part in designing the school to fit the particular needs of that community?
I also haven't seen media reports saying he "funded" a school, maybe that he "built" or "opened" a school. Either way, why does the media giving him credit bother you so much?
Do you know how much it would cost to fund an entire private school without charging tuition to it's student (which is the whole point of this endeavor)?

I went to the school several weeks ago and what he (LeBron) is doing with resources and educators who are thinking outside the box is heartwarming and legacy changing. In working with kids that are in the bottom 25% percentile in the Akron school system is a challenge but much needed resource in the community!

I’ve actually been thinking about my builds. I’ve always been a playmaking small forward but couldn’t adapt to it at all last year and ended up as a post scoring power forward as my main build.
But now with the new motion engine and the emphasis on mismatches I’m thinking about trying out point for the first time since like 2K11 and retrying my usual small forward build.

Guess I’ll be able to figure this all out tomorrow and I’m excited just for that.

I'm definitely going to give an athletic SF build a try. PG dribbling style with a pull-up game, not necessarily the best finisher, but passing skills for sure. Wanna see how the stop & start handles feel (if SFs have access to them, which they should)
