NBA 2K20 Features the WNBA in Play Now and Season Modes - Trailer, Developer Blog & Screenshots Here

2K has announced all 12 WNBA teams are making their debut in NBA 2K20, the next iteration of the top-rated and top-selling NBA video game simulation series of the past 18 years*. Available in Play Now and Season modes, fans of the franchise will be able to take control of their favorite WNBA players for the first time and experience gameplay animations, play styles and visuals built exclusively around the women’s game.

“Growing up, I always remembered watching male athletes on TV and playing as them in video games. Now, to have the WNBA be in the position we are and to have women featured prominently in NBA 2K20, we are allowing young girls and boys to have female athletes as role models,” said Candace Parker, Los Angeles Sparks forward.  “The 2K team has done an amazing job of making sure to not just put women into the game playing men’s basketball, but I’ve seen first-hand the hard work they’re doing to make this as real and authentic as possible to women’s basketball. I’m proud to be a part of this team paving the way for the future.”

Many of the top WNBA superstars, like Parker and A’ja Wilson of the Las Vegas Aces, have been scanned into NBA 2K20earlier this year using our best-in-class motion capture technology to create the most realistic simulation on the market.

“For years, fans have requested the ability to play as some of their favorite WNBA stars,” said Jeff Thomas, SVP of Development, Visual Concepts. “We’ve been working with the WNBA and their top players to modify our basketball simulation engine to replicate the WNBA on-court experience. We’re excited to roll out this new feature in NBA 2K20 because we know how important the WNBA is to the world of basketball.”

WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert noted, “We are excited to have WNBA players as part of this top selling video game, helping to bring more exposure to these elite players, expanding our fan base and providing an immersive gaming experience featuring women role model athletes.”

All game modes featuring the WNBA will be available to play when NBA 2K20 is released worldwide on September 6, 2019.

Here’s the NBA 2K20 WNBA developer diary.

Hi, Felicia Steenhouse here, long time NBA 2K producer, first time Dev Diary contributor.  With me is Ann Sidenblad our Lead Character Artist, here to talk to you about the WNBA in NBA 2K20.  I’m going to set the stage for you here, and then pass things over to Ann to get into the artsy stuff.  So let’s dive right in!

Let’s talk about representation in sports.  Sports are an important public stage.  It’s a space to lift up the best of us. Right now we find ourselves in an exciting time where women are getting to take their rightful place on that stage – front and center.

When my mom was young, she and her friends snuck out to the basketball courts to play without being caught by the disapproving nuns from the Catholic school she attended.  Of course, there have been women playing sports forever and there always will be.  Representation is about respecting the work and honoring the accomplishment with no caveats, exceptions, or qualifiers.  In doing so we pave the way for something bigger.  When the younger generation can see it, they can do it, and that makes space for them to do even more.  And all of us sports fans get to benefit.  We get to marvel at what they do next.

So when we found out we were getting the privilege to represent the WNBA in our game, we were thrilled and also felt the weight of the task at hand.  While we have come a long way from having to sneak out to the basketball court, we still have a long way to go.  We have an opportunity to represent these women to millions of 2K fans in all of their strength and swagger, from their hair to their shoes to their moves on the court, and we want to get it right.

And you might ask why we chose to focus our Dev Diary on Character art?  When we watch the WNBA we see these athletes in all their unique style and swag.  From how they wear their shorts to their tattoos, they are individuals defining how they want the world to view them. There aren’t many public stages that allow this and it’s something we wanted to respect.  Second, Ann and her team put in a herculean effort to get this done right, and that is something worth showing off.  With that let me pass this on to Ann…

Working on the characters for NBA 2K is a big task. The players, uniforms, shoes, accessories, hairstyles, and tattoos are always evolving, and we are constantly re-evaluating all aspects of our players in-game.  We are so excited to be adding the WNBA to our game this year, and want to make sure we give it the attention to detail that the NBA 2K franchise is known for.  So how do we start?  Research… lots of research!  We break the tasks down into manageable pieces, and attack them as directly as we can for each piece.  Many of the big picture components, such as uniforms and shoes, are the same between NBA and WNBA, but that’s not enough. We need to dig down to find the specifics of the WNBA, the teams, and each individual player!

The first thing we knew we needed was to capture the athletic look and feel of all the different types of players. We looked through reference images of everyone in the WNBA and identified key aspects that we wanted to target. We ensured that the WNBA models would have all the features and functionality of the NBA models, advancing our internal tools to ensure we captured each unique player’s likeness.

WNBA hairstyles were another area that we needed to build from the ground up.  A common misconception is that hairstyles come complete through the player scans, but that is not the case.  For any new hairstyle, artists need to craft every strand, braid, and curl from scratch. So we spent a great deal of time cataloging all of the WNBA hairstyles and broke them down into classifications such as bun, ponytail, braids, and started to create a collection of hairstyles. So much individuality comes through a player’s hair that we try to capture it as best we can in-game.

In creating the hairstyles, we immediately knew that we needed to add hair simulation into the mix for more realistic movement of the hair. Longer hairstyles will now flow behind the player as they run down the court, have bounce and follow through with every crossover and jump shot! This is an area we have been interested in exploring already, and so it was a great opportunity to push this tech forward in our game.  It’s always a challenge to add any sort of new simulation to the game as it is costly to run, and we are already squeezing every ounce we can out of performance! But, with an overhaul, our Tech Art and Engineering teams were able to refine the hair technology enough to run at the quality we expect!  We’re very excited with the direction this extra movement is heading, and are looking forward to pushing it even more in the future.

And then it comes down to the volume of faces. Adding the WNBA face scans to the game is a huge increase in player likenesses the art team has completed this year. For example, the WNBA has doubled our usual player face scan count for this year! Our team was committed to getting every scan we possibly could into the game.

After scanning the face, artists and animators work to capture the complete emotional range the players show on court. There are several steps the Character Team takes to digitally recreate the individual players as accurately as possible and get their files game-ready.  We were able to complete all of this new art by improvements to our technical pipeline and an incredible effort from the NBA 2K Art Team!  For 2K20, the Character Art Team has updated more NBA and WNBA faces than any year before!  We can’t wait to share our game with you this year, and are excited with how we can continue to push ourselves going forward.

Thanks Ann!  At this point I’m sure you are saying to yourself “Wow, this looks gorgeous, but how’s it going to play?”  I want to be clear about this: we didn’t just put WNBA players in our game.  We added WOMEN’S BASKETBALL.  If you are new to the W, buckle up, because you have a whole new world of basketball to explore in NBA 2K20.  New players and new teams with new play styles and strengths to master, and weaknesses to exploit.  True to the history of our franchise, we worked hard to make sure every player played like themselves and every team felt like the real-life counterpart.

It started with motion capture. We had the privilege of capturing some of the best WNBA talent to ever play the game: Candace Parker of the LA Sparks, Breanna Stewart of the Seattle Storm, Amaya Valdemoro Madariaga of the Houston Comets (a Spanish basketball legend), and Maite Cazorla from the Atlanta Dream. In addition to these ladies, we also brought in several former college athletes to help us build our library of animations specific to the new mode. Not only was it a delight mocapping such talented women, but we learned a lot working with all of them, and talking to them in person about what makes the WNBA unique.

In many ways, we felt like we were building a basketball game from the ground up. But even as a first year effort, we were able to build a huge content library. You can look forward to thousands of new animations from jump shots, layups, dribble moves, in-air and on ground collisions, motion, free throws, celebrations, and more.

We also spent a great deal of time developing specific AI, playbooks, and defensive schemes for each WNBA team to accurately portray their real-life styles. If you are already a tried-and-true WNBA fan you are going to experience the game you love in a brand new way. Cambage and Griner banging down low, Vandersloot and The Point Gawd herself Chelsea Gray slinging passes and everything in between.  The grit, the hustle, the precision, the finesse.  You’ll find it all in NBA 2K20.

As a longtime fan, something I am having fun with and can’t wait to share is having our greats back on the court! In NBA 2K20, we can have Diana, Stewie, Candace, Bird (and way too many more) on the hardwood.  Can you build a championship line up around Candace Parker and the Ogwumike sisters? Can you take the Seattle Storm back to the Finals?  Find out in WNBA Season mode where you can play as any or all of the 12 WNBA teams through the 2019 season.

Knowing the history of what it has taken to make NBA 2K the franchise it is today, we know this is just a small first step into the world of women’s basketball with the WNBA.  Getting to where we ultimately want to be is going to be a much longer journey.  In true NBA 2K spirit, we intend to be trailblazers and we will push every year for the highest level of authenticity possible. Make Way!

The WNBA in NBA 2K20 is what’s NEXT!

  1. Hopefully the hairstyles are available for the CAP Makers,
Hopefully they are available across both genders
Also, hopefully all basketball shot/dribble animations are available across both genders
This is dope, period. 2k's knows where it's priorities are though considering how quickly they shared this information and the ones they save for later. Best for later 2k?

So happy to see this. So happy that there is a season mode attached to it. With Live it was just play now and it felt like the addition was empty.

But can you use them in park tho?

I'm not sure where I read this, but I remember it saying that there's gonna be 2 separate parks for men and women. Correct me if I'm wrong though.
Not going to lie...the trailer was pretty impressive. Perhaps it's because it has that NEW feeling. But I thought it looked great, and I welcome the WNBA and the ladies to the 2k world. If it was done right then I was all for it, and it actually looks like it's being done right so this is great with me. Good job 2k. :appl:
This is pretty cool and I hope I enjoy playing it. The Season Mode kind of brings it all together because it provides depth and a sense of reason to it all.
If I had to guess, the WNBA is going to be a niche addition to most folks but I pretty much only see positives from its inclusion (as long as the art team tasked with fixing up Zombie Dumars and other classics got re-assigned to the WNBA instead). I can see gamers digging into these teams and finding some diamonds in the rough to light their friends up with and having a blast while doing so. Imagine challenging a friend to a WNBA battle and then lighting them up with, say, Lexie Brown out of nowhere.
If done right the WNBA could be such a cool change of pace - similar to how I used to play minor league baseball games in MVP '05, where suddenly only some players could rake and fielding was generally imperfect. I'm really intrigued by the animations and playstyles.
Lastly, I originally got into basketball during the Pistons Bad Boys era (I'm old). I knew the Pistons, MJ, Magic, and Bird. But I didn't really start to familiarize myself with the entire NBA until I got Tecmo NBA Basketball for Christmas, where I could tangibly see, learn, and play as guys like Ron Anderson, Hersey Hawkins, Rod Strickland, and Roy Hinson. To a lesser extent, since a lot of us aren't really obsessed with the WNBA to begin with, I could see their inclusion helping people like us become way more familiar with its teams and players beyond just knowing, like, Brittney Griner, Diana Taurasi, and Candice Parker.
P.S. As an aside, I wonder if there's a WNBA championship trophy celebration.

I agree. Its dope that not only they added this but did a season mode where you can fight to win a championship. It also helps bring more exposure to the WNBA for the casual fan.
I do feel this is how you implement a feature like this if you are going to do it. Even if it may not be apart of Park, the way how they implemented it, it is something that can be built off of for the future. I like the amount of detail that was put into this. They designed playbooks, sets, and styles specifically for the WNBA. So it won't feel like they just added the mode just to add it. Wonder how the CAP is for the WNBA. One thing I didn't care for in Live was how the created builds played like the male counterparts. I wanted to see authentic WNBA playing styles.

Agreed its dope, but there was no pressure from Live. The NBA asked for this, fam.
Im pretty certain they do this for quite a few things to be honest.
That hand off into the shot was fire!
Man I am so out of it knowledge wise when it comes to the WNBA I didn't know there was only 12 total teams in the league, yikes. But I am very excited about this addition to 2k I actually enjoyed playing the WNBA part of NBA Live and I dare say something about it felt smoother then playing with the NBA players in that game. Well done 2k not making this just a back of the box feature and actually putting time and effort into the feature.
Wouldn't mind seeing some classic WNBA teams in future installments of 2k with Cynthia Cooper and Sheryl Swoops and Lisa Leslie teams making an appearance.
Great addition to the game, nice to see we can do a season mode with them but not going to lie I was hoping that we could do a franchise mode with them but i gues season mode is a nice start, expansion to franchise mode next year ?
Everything looks good from what I saw. Animations look unique, and I like the fact that the hair is going to be free flowing. it's clear there was a tremendous amount of resources dedicated.
That said, considering I have zero interest in this league, or it's players; I'd be lying if I didn't say I wish those thousands of animations were nba or classic team specific.

Not attacking you personally on this because I already know this will be said all over the internet or at least something similar to it, but you already know 2k adds tons of animations to their game every year, so why would you want the WNBA animations to be sacrificed just to add even more animation to the NBA side when they already have years and years of animations already In the game for that specific part of the game. I'd understand if they said "well guys we had to take 2.000 animations from the NBA side of the game to add it to the WNBA side" then I would understand but the NBA side is the bread and butter of the game so let the WNBA have their 10 seconds of spot light and be glad they actually cared enough to make that part of the game play different then lets say the male part of the game lol.
Bummer no MyLeague for them. I’d probably give a WNBA MyLeague a shot but I can’t see myself doing a season mode and I basically don’t do any Play Now as it is.

Gonna be having a lot of fun with these teams. The reason I dont watch WBNA games is because I dont know any of the players. This will change that.
I wonder if these teams will be available in Play Now Online? I might give the Indiana Fever a run. It might nice to play fundamental basketball and not worry about players getting stupid dunks off.

I think a season mode is perfect for the first year. I'll definitely do one. I dont know enough about the WNBA to try to do a long term rebuild. I dont know who's good, or bad or whatever. I figure a season mode is deep and bite size enough to get familiar with the league.

Id say at least learn the teams stars. The WNBA plays more of a 90s style of basketball if you can compare it to something, so they share the ball more and run their sets to get good shots if possible, and utilize the post.
Definitely a different game than the NBA. Don't get in there trying to break ankles and do all kinds of flashy one on one black hole moves trying to be great

Ksutttonjr76 - WNBA is available to play now online and my season. Those are the two modes that was mention in the article. I was just wonder who's going to use WNBA to get to the GOAT trophy?
I love it. Not a huge WNBA fan but the fact that this looks like something they actually put work into and didn’t just slap on is a great thing to me. Would also be dope if they threw the Comets in there

It's a fine first step considering it's their first year being in the game at all. I'm just not interested in single season modes. Certainly better than just being in Play Now though; I know season modes have an audience; it just isn't for me.
    Yes!
Going to be dope to play with them.. all for integration.
No hate this side, treat them like a mode you don't play and just focus on what you like if you feel this was a waste of space. Salute to the lady gamers!

I say that because I feel like the classic portion of the game is lacking severely in signature styles, shooting forms, faces and tendencies. I mean in many instances it's down right terrible. So with that being the case for a while I just wish those resources were used in something I'd enjoy.

Online and Offline? I just presumed it was for the offline Play Now.
This is cool and all, but what I really wanna know is whether the hairstyles and animations for female CAPs (assuming there’s a female CAP) can be applied to the male CAPs.
    On a side note:
If all the real player hairstyles in NBA 2k are separate from the face scans, then I wonder why we can’t import hairstyles from real NBA players via Player DNA for CAPs. That would up the number of CAP hairstyles considerably! Also: I wonder if the same is true with facial hair?
Kinda related: In the WNBA trailer, there's a nice little scrum for a loose ball where two players dive on the ground and one player jumps over their bodies to avoid tripping...I assume that animation will be in the NBA side of things as well and that's a nice addition.
    XxKnicksRules215xX
If it comes you invited it.
I think you're overestimating my power and underestimating that group's ability to comment on everything.
With that said, OS does seem for the most part free of that. Unlike Twitter

    why is the arena filled?

I was just at a WNBA game a month ago in Connecticut and it was sold out. Not every game is empty like people make it out to be. Plus, this screenshot shows less people in the arena.

My League really wouldnt work at this point. There is practically no FA in the WNBA and the player contract structure doesnt really lead to negotiations. It would be a tough fit.

This exactly. Can't wait to try these awesome ladies out in a full season where games actually mean something and it's not just a Play Now gimmick.

That’s been in the game for years
I'm glad they didn't half *** this. Got a lot of respect for the work they did here. Has me hoping that some things they did here art wise make it over to the mens side, like guys are saying, shorts length but also hair texture. Very cool. I'll definitely play it a couple times, more so if it actually has a different feel to the game beyond just animations, such as spacing and playbooks.
Having at least a season mode is great for the first year, ngl I'd feel some type of way if they attempted a WNBA MyLeague with WNBA league structure when theyre still missing or incorrect in so many CBA rules in the NBA side lol. But it already is very clear this is a much more serious implementation than that of the EuroLeague a few years ago.
    Great job 2k!
Not sure if I'm seeing what I want to see or if it's just the WNBA players giving the game a different look but I'm liking the graphics this year. Can't quite put my finger on it, and it's not exactly a night and day difference from last year, but something about the screens in this trailer looks really good. Maybe the lighting and colors have been adjusted a bit?
Really liked the addition in Live, so it was just a matter of time until 2K adapted. On a other leagues-related note, given the rights might be easier to hold I don't see us losing the WNBA in future games like we lost the Euroleague.
I really want a MyLeague for WNBA as MyLeague is my main form of play, but a Season mode is acceptable.

    TIL.
This is exactly why the WNBA needed to be in 2K. I now have a reason to learn more about the league and how it works.
I remember helping a poster here make a WNBA roster a couple of years ago so I'm already pretty familiar with the league and the players. I'll definitely try to get a season done with Connecticut or Washington.
Side note but I hope all of those new signature animations aren't locked to the WNBA. Sig nation would definitely appreciate having more material to work with.
Anyway, this is a pretty great way for their league to get the exposure that they need. Good move

Hope so. Wasn't really a fan of 2K18/19 so if 2K20 is more of the same then I probably won't be back until much later. Thanks for the support though
I cant start a league from 1984 with the proper 23 teams, but I can play a Wash Mystics seasons. LoL. Its ridiculous but Im sure the NBA mandated it be included.

Whats funny is I'm sure that there is a group of people (including me) who dont give a **** about running classic seasons but are happy about being able to use some of the greatest women basketball players in the world in 2k20.
I dont think it was NBA mandated at all. I think 2k saw that Live had it, that WNBA exposure and popularity is on the uptick and said "What the hell, lets add this into the game".

the WNBA is incredibly unpopular. there was zero call for this from any where expect the NBA offices. And as I saw someone say else where "theres a lot people pretending to care about this"

What evidence do you have that today's WNBA is "pretty unpopular"?
What evidence do you have that the NBA mandated this?
Just because you dont find it interesting doesnt mean others dont. Just like I dont give a **** if you can play a 2k20 season in 1984 with Terry Cummings, Jack Sikma and Paul Mokeski. That doesnt mean that no one is interested in that type of mode.
I don't believe the NBA had anything to do with this, neither did pressure from Live. I don't think it's female empowerment and support for WNBA, either.
Honestly, this smells like a pure cash grab. 2K looks more socially conscious, but more importantly they're setting foot into a larger market. They want females playing 2K and buying VC. Simple as that, and I can't be convinced otherwise. Call me a cynic but this what my frustration with the game has led me to think.
Oh well, I hope the girls get a kick out of this. Just don't fall for the trap pls lol.
Women and people of color can't be in video games that didn't have them before without people crying cash grab and who asked for this lol

Why is this a bad thing? Why is expanding the user base to more females a bad thing?

Whats funny is I'm sure that there is a group of people (including me) who dont give a **** about running classic seasons but are happy about being able to use some of the greatest women basketball players in the world in 2k20.

I think there's appeal for both. I like historic myleague as a concept and i like the WNBA. I'd like both of them in a 2K game, but I understand contracts and other issues have to be considered for the latter. Charles Barkley still won't join 2K unless 2K donates to the veteran players thing.

If it were a cash grab they would've just half assed it and put it in and say look we have WNBA to. Player specific animation, animated hair and a season mode to boot.
No way this is a cash grab with the amount of work that went into this.

Its nice to hear they are putting the WNBA in the game. I just wished they had done this before Tamika Catchings had retired, and back when the Indiana Fever were good, LOL.
I likely wont play all that much with the WNBA, but Im glad to see them in the game. My 11 yr old niece lives with me half the time, so Im sure she will enjoy having girls in the game to play with:lolabove:

Completely missed that. Did he give any other details?

In terms of the graphics? All I've seen LD say was that they implemented a new lighting model and that it was 2K14-like. From the footage we've seen it definitely looks similar to 14. Maybe they'll release another art dev diary and give more details but I'm not sure.

Yeah low key I would have actually really enjoyed playing as the Detroit Shock.
Personally I gave no interest in WNBA but... if we could replace WNBA teams in season mode with created teams a decent ABA season would be possible???

Im sure 2k saw a way to possibly make more money, by adding in the woman, but they are a business, so cant fault them for wanting to make more money, or I dont know why anyone would blame them for it.
But like you, I figure the NBA had a hand in them adding in the WNBA. I would actually be surprised if they didnt have a hand in getting 2k to put the WNBA in the game.

My League really wouldnt work at this point. There is practically no FA in the WNBA and the player contract structure doesnt really lead to negotiations. It would be a tough fit.

I was thinking maybe 2K21 they could have WNBA MyLeague or MyGM but reading this, guess they don't have a traditional FA period? I know there is a draft so there's that but expansion would be cool as you can add new teams to the league.

Yeah it’s not traditional and its extremely rare that even mid level players ever become free agents. Most player movement is through trades.

There is not a better platform for the WNBA to get more attention than this game, especially with the way 2K can put the extra splash on it.
As it stands the Big3 was getting higher tv ratings than some of their games, for different reasons.
Id like for more guys to get familiar with the players, and then see how they rip the other women apart in the Olympics. If youve never watched them in international competition you should. They'll make you proud.
Going to be an amazing addition that is long overdue to 2K! I really hope they don’t make us wait for 2K21 to have a WNBA MyPlayer! and I hope they have WNBA Legendary teams as well! Can’t wait to play it

Nah it isn’t. The large majority of WNBA games air on Espn2 and cbs sports network. Comparing them to the big 3 is completely unfair when 3/4 of the big 3s games air on a network everyone has. Their ratings will always be better simply because of that.
When they air on abc (which is rare) their ratings are slightly below the big 3 on cbs.

Once people made it abundantly clear they are willing to spend extra money on VC or MyTeam "cards" the suits took the next measure (of milking y'all for every dollar they can). Just like any other corporation in existence would....
Sorry for getting off - topic but the cry against microtransactions and VC is grating. And being the details driven nerd I am the WNBA teams will need to be fully edited too (sorry Hype and DC).

You like online streetball; heres the park. You want to live the life an NBA star; MyCareer. You like buying/collecting cards for fantasy basketball; MyTeam. You like the old school NBA; classic teams and players. You're an offline franchise head; MyLeague along with MyGm for a twist. You want sim NBA with real sets and playbook; heres ACE which Czar and OG representing tiny old "simnation" are always plugging. Theres something for everyone. The WNBA is just another solid addition, but it also adds replay value.

This 1000%. It's probably 2ks biggest strength. They have features and modes for just about anyone and I don't think any of it is watered down or half assed. 2k could probably do less without sales slipping. I'd put them up against any other sports game in terms of content and they probably rank at or near the top in terms of quality and quantity.

There is a lot of content in the game for sure, albeit half of the modes are pay2win. Even MyCareer has 2 stand alone games, My league could be its own game.
My first thought: Not necessary or high priority....Developement ressources should better be invested in other important areas like better and intensive quality-testing before releasing the game with new, but broken features like mentorship or the third jersey glitch 2K never fixed....or stable servers? hmmm

Ronnie said on the Boardroom that they'd been working on implementing it over several years. I'm sure it didn't impact any core features AT ALL.
To everyone bashing the people saying the WNBA isn't popular, they averaged 6,700 fans a game last year. Down 1000 from 2010. There are certainly other things they could have spent their time on but appealing to the female demographic was great PR so I don't blame them. Happy for people who will enjoy the addition but it will provide 0 value for me and a vast majority of 2k players.

Come on man. Stand by your statements. You made a statement ("The WNBA is unpopular") so it should be easy as hell to find articles and data that backs that up.
You can do so much better than this.
SMDH...how hard is it for people to skip over the WNBA if they're not interested in it? Personally, I'm PROUD that they added the WNBA to NBA 2K. It adds more depth to the game and gives users something else to play. People need to stop acting like they pulled Mike Wang, Leftos, Czar, etc off the NBA part and made them 100% focus on the WNBA.
There is a process called "hiring more people" to complete a task.

Although it's no great detail I've kinda noticed Candace has some shaped triceps IRL.

I hope that PC modes will be able to copy the WNBA roster for use in MyLeague. Have the 12 actual teams, then duplicate those teams and replace the real players with CAPS. Have a 30 team expansion league. Find a way to create female draft classes and call it a day!

Kudos to 2k for actually letting you play in season mode. They have the women's league in my Nba live but it's really useless to me if you can't play a team in a season. With that being said, I still would rather have international teams like an Olympic mode or the upcoming world games.
While I still don't think the VAST majority of 2k players will care one bit about the WNBA, it's neat that 2k was able to get a Season Mode in for it and it isn't just limited to Play Now. I'll still probably only ever play one half with the teams, I have absolutely zero interest in the WNBA, but at least it is there for the few that do follow the league.

Most likely will be next year. I think they would rather do the Olympics next year. Just like 2k17.
For 2 years, we told the live devs that we at least wanted a season/franchise mode for the wnba mode for variety, but they ignored the few willing to play live, focused solely on a streetball mode, and now 2k offers a much better version of the wnba, with superior gameplay, graphics, and modes in just their first attempt.
I don't like golf in real life, but I like playing golf video games, like everybody's golf. I think the wnba will be similar in that aspect for a lot of nba 2k players.

I predict a 5%-10% increase in WNBA viewership next season. I know I will be watching, even though I've had little interest in years past. As a kid, I had a pair of Diana Taurasi PE Nikes, and they were my favorite pair of shoes. Ended up watching her play solely because of the shoes, and that's how I was introduced to the WNBA. I have no clue who those people are....mind showing who that CAPS are with the real players? I want to see the female version of created players.
Also I doubt 2k was able to scan all the players. Pretty much like the NBA version where players downright refuse or just didn't get scanned because of plans that they can't get out of.

I only mentioned because they are easily the biggest names on the roster, Griner being a perennial allstar big and Taurasi being one of the biggest names in WNBA history (all-time leading scorer). Maybe they'll be last minute fixes.

I'd rather have Highschool or euro-league teams than WNBA teams. In the WNBA you have like 1 dunk every 30 games, smaller balls, mediocre shooting, and horrible defense.

Ah yes, high schoolers are known for their precise shooting, stellar defense, and constant dunking abilities. This comment is ludicrous on multiple levels. Have you ever watched a WNBA game? Silly question, of course you haven’t. It’s obvious. High school. Lmao. Absolutely ridiculous.

and if you were a game developer no one would buy your game.

I laughed for a good 10 minutes when I saw this same comment on YouTube the other day. Like the other member said, not all arenas are empty. The Mercury games are pretty packed and also the Minnesota Lynx seem to be sold out or close to sold out.

    Mystics too but I can’t front....I laughed.

is NBA2K still gearing everything towards micro-transactions? or is it a worthy buy for an offline player these days? this addition makes it tempting; if it were dynasty it would be epic
This is tight. I actually wanted to play a WNBA season over the summer. Glad it’ll be in this year’s game.

I wonder if these teams will be available in Play Now Online? I might give the Indiana Fever a run. It might nice to play fundamental basketball and not worry about players getting stupid dunks off.

this is where my interest in WNBA in 2k lies too... just a really hardcore game of basketball with no cheese lol

Theres more to basketball than dunking, and obviously you havent watch much of the WNBA if you think they cant shoot, and they play horrible defense. These girls play every bit as hard as the guys do, and in some cases play harder and more physical than some of the guys in todays game.
Except the WNBA players dont have better fundamentals. They just aren't capable of doing the things men can do.
W/e... not crying, it's all good if you like that league. Just not my thing. I'll skip it.

Ah yes. High schoolers have great fundamentals, and most of them definitely have the same strength and athleticism of fully grown adult men. It’s not like Zion is a rare specimen or anything.
Sounds like there’s a little more to it for you than not liking the league, just saying. Especially because you literally said high schoolers are more talented than WNBA players. Which is quite possibly the most ignorant thing I’ve ever read on this board. Keep in mind I’ve been lurking/posting here for over a decade.
He ain't wrong. Most top high school teams will beat the WNBA's best.
It's just a question of athleticism. Look at any good high school team, you'll find that most players can play above the rim.
In the entire WNBA there may be 3 and to say they can play above the rim is a stretch.
I don't mind the WNBA in the game, maybe some little girls might enjoy it, but I personally don't want to do layups all game. I'll pass.
Hopefully this leads to more layup animations. I'm tired of how slow the current layups are. Since WNBA is mostly layups, it'd be a shame for them to not be improved and expanded upon. If they do tho, it's gonna be a fun year in the paint

Lmao. Okay buddy. Yeah, only little girls will enjoy it. You’re probably right. Totally no sexism in that opinion.

It's some real hoopers in the WNBA. Chelsea Gray, Delle Donne and Vandersloot are prob my fav to watch right now, but if you call yourself a bball fan and can't appreciate young Tarasi and young Sue Bird then you're really missing out.
A lot of my favorite male players aren't extremely athletic either so maybe that's why I can also enjoy the WNBA.
    Barncore
Three to five thousand new animations? I wonder if they'll be available in CAP for males too

Don't think it's 100% confirmed yet, but one of the "influencers" at community day said that you can use WNBA animations for male players.

Some of these posts are just really concerning, makes you wonder where tf y’all heads are at.

    forreal...
like I'm not that into the WNBA but to hear just how anti it people are is kinda disheartening.

I feel like the jokes are funny the first or second time someone makes them (because they’re absurd), but once they get parroted by people with obvious misogynistic feelings you start to go from amused to tired to mad. It’s not a good look to like the game of basketball and constantly make harmful **** up about WNBA.
All for new modes and glad they put a season mode attached so they can get true metrics on whether it’s worth attaching assets to the WNBA. Many times they half effort and use these additions as “play only” and then don’t get a true reading on whether it’s worth it.
And lol at some of these responses though...I don’t think some of you understand what a good high school team would do to a WNBA team. I played basketball at a high level and this is all understood. It’s like our women’s World Cup getting beat by prepubescent boys in exhibitions but on steroids. Or what Braasch did to Serena and Venus.
I hope some of you guys don’t say these things out loud or around anyone who understands the game. Cringe.

Thats the thing. Someone made a short "kitchen" joke here and I chuckled. With that said, most of the statements made are clearly either someone being misogynistic or someone who wants to discredit the league. The WNBA has similar (sometimes better) ratings than the MLS. I dont see Fifa fans up in arms about the game adding MLS or the 3rd division in England. They either play with that league or they dont.
It should be the same thing here.

You mean the U15 friendly where the women’s team didn’t actually try to win and took selfies with the kids mid game? Signed autographs and chatted with them after the game? Swapped kits even? If you think that friendly was indicative of anything it’s because you want it to be.
Just noticed you also attacked those of us defending women with the word ‘cringe’ and insulting our knowledge of sports. So with the knowledge that you’re likely a teenage 4chan user in mind, I retract any sort of respectful sentiment I may have given you. You know what’s cringey? Misogyny. Sexism. Pretending you’re better than women at everything. The only thing you might be better than them at is sitting on a couch playing sports video games. :) Have a lovely day.

Lol. Take care of yourself, kid.
Was really hoping they could've integrated the WNBA season into MyLeague so the full offseason would be the most unique in any NBA game. WNBA season, Free Agency, Draft, Combine would be really dope. And the WNBA draft would be really interesting.

Can you create female players and use in Season Mode?

I hope so. No reason you shouldn’t be able to since you can create female players.

Why is it that the gameplay plays smoother than NBA type gameplay? The gameplay this year great no matter what but in Live WNBA had better planting etc and same thing for 2K
