MLB The Show 20 Videos - Road to the Show Improvements (IGN, GameSpot)

MLB The Show 20 videos are coming in hot lately. Today, we get to see some videos showing off the improvements to Road to the Show this year.

Joe Doyle highlighted everything we saw in the videos, in his latest MLB The Show 20 article. But it’s always fun to read about some of the little things the community finds.

For example, countryboy found some more confirmed minor league player names:

  • Oscar Gonzalez (AA)
  • Ka’ai Tom (AAA)
  • Ernie Clement (AAA)
  • Gianpaul Gonzalez (AA)

Also of note, polyduster found a little gem in the Franchise tile that says “Featuring all-new custom teams”… That sounds interesting, maybe we hear a little nugget about it on the Thursday livestream.

Check out the MLB The Show 20 videos below.

IGN had 20 minutes of footage, as Ramone Russell walks through the changes made to Road to the Show this year.

GameSpot also had some time with Ramone, as they take a look at the new systems like instantaneous attribute boosts and real time team chemistry mechanics, which are based on player performance.

  1. Watching it right now, and if you're a Tigers fan, you'll see that they have the real minor league players for Double A Erie in there.

This is a screen grab from the new IGN RTTS video. Definitely real minor leaguers

I'm a dinosaur, I typically avoid the "MyPlayer" modes in sports games today. I don't hate them or anything, I understand the gaming landscape. But man, the real life ads and real minor leaguers is gonna make playing Road to the Show feel more authentic this year. I'm looking forward to Show 20 a little more now.
Side note but am I the only one who liked the old layout of the in game pause menu better? The one from 18.
The lineups were right there instead of having to press square. Lineups had batting averages too, now they don't. Also seemed to load quicker when pause button is hit.
I could be wrong, but I think this is the first time we've seen that the in game pause menu is unchanged from 19.

Gah!! I’m trying to go a month without looking/watching a lot of this stuff..but this is the hardest time of the year!

Lol especially when it’s pretty much confirmed they have full minors from day one! First day purchase for me.

This looks to me like all window dressing. What about the draft Bowman Scout Day showcase games are any of it going to matter again. Can I go higher than the 15th round.

Maybe I'm reading into it a little too much, but custom teams sounds very promising :)
    I'm excited for Thursday again!
Edit: to clarify, I should probably say it sounds even more promising than just relocation. Though I think we all kinda figured that. But this seems like some good confirmation.

And this surprises you? We all knew he would be back.

I love Matty V but his The Show stuff is completely uninspired and has none of the excitement he has in real life. It’s like casting Tom Hanks and then giving him a Fast and Furious script

Oh I'm not disputing the fact that he sounds uninspired, I completely agree with that. And I am in the boat that I would either love to see him work on being more natural or replace him with someone else to keep things fresh. I was just saying that the guy sounded surprised that he was still in as commentator.

But wouldn't "custom" teams fall under the rebranding? Change the logo through DD assets, city name and team name.

based on the IGN video, real minor leaguers is 1000% happening. Looks like their likenesses are even accurate. Zac Lowther was shown wearing clear glasses while pitching just like he wears in real life
Did anyone else watch about two minutes of this an almost immediately lose interest? It seems every year this mode gets more and more gimmicky. I hate that they add to vision or take away from it per pitch. I've never been a fan of the progression system in this mode and the only question I really want to know never gets answered. Which is, will we lose our jersey number if someone gets traded or called up to our team that has the same number?
I usually dabble in Road to The Show but if this year's game truly has full minor league rosters I'll just skip it altogether.

the part about relationships between a pitcher and a catcher sounded awesome to me. I wish it was something that could be applied to franchise.

One minute. Skipped the rest. It looks the same to me. The new fielding animations and hitting mechanics are nice, but Sony will have to show me more with their game, especially with what they have added and improved in franchise mode and March to October. $59.99US is a lot of money to spend on a game with updated rosters, minor league rosters and small improvements to gameplay and animations.

Don't hold your breath, it's the last year before next gen. It shouldn't be surprising to anyone paying attention that the focus so far has been completely on refinement.

In the video it appeared that the game deducted a vision point when Ramone took a pitch that was called a strike. In MLB 19 the game deducts vision points if you take a 3rd strike, but not every pitch. We should be allowed to take pitches with less than three strikes before the game penalizes us. I don't think it is a show stopper, but it does scream of "more gimmicky" this year.

Ok this is pretty cool. First new pair of cleats I’ve spotted, they look like they’re the Jordan 1 Retros. You can make out the Jumpman on the tongue.

Looks very much like Jordan is in. I looked up the retro 1's and it looks like them.
As someone that currently has 4 pitchers going in RTTS I found this somewhat exciting-"Developing New Pitches is Easier Than Ever
Whether it is learning a new pitch to add to your arsenal or changing that arsenal by replacing one pitch with another, Pitchers will now find ample opportunity to develop their unique tools of attack."
Not that excited for franchise but I am REALLY excited for RTTS. I love that you can affect relationships on-field, now it'll be a lot quicker to build up. Plus, attribute changes in real-time that show you in real-time, situations affect personality, real minor leaguers, etc.
RTTS will be serious fun this season and onwards.

I thought this when I saw it too. But then I got to thinking it's only a very small decrement and even so, ignoring a pitch down the middle? It might be the only good one in the AB.
This made me think there needs to be situations where you're following Manager directions such as steal, take a pitch or hit a sac fly or bunt.
I have a couple of questions that came to mind while watching this vid. Nobody here will be able to answer them but nevertheless:
  2. Attribute gains (eg confidence) from a relationship - If I am 1B does my relationship with the 3B increase my confidence in plays with 2B, SS etc or just my plays with 3B? Answered in the stream - when a friend is not in the lineup you don't get their gains, so this implies that yes your gains from the 3B do affect your plays with other teammates.
  3. Is a summary of relationship/rivals changes presented after a game or series, like attribute changes are? It didn't appear so in the clip.
  4. Is it a correct assumption that relationships become rivalries when a player changes teams (and vice versa)?
  5. Do relationships regress over time? eg if a player is traded to another team will your rivalry go down until you play them, or a bad play is made.

I'd also be keen to know whether "2% of the swings are perfect-perfect" means that it has been programmed that 2% of my swings will end up perfect-perfect based on the overall telemetry data from the beta, or is the telemetry data that has been recorded irrelevant to each of my individual swings (in other words, is there any predetermined bias in each outcome)?
I watched the perfect-perfect stream and this may have been answered but I can't remember.
