MLB The Show 18 Video - Mark DeRosa Joins Commentary Team with Improved Presentation

After one year, Harold Reynolds is out. MLB Network analyst Mark DeRosa joins the commentary team of MLB The Show 18 as color commentator, along with Dan Plesac and play-by-play announcer Matt Vasgersian.

This year, a lot of commentary was captured with all of the announcers working together in the same studio, to produce a dynamic and adaptive commentary experience, over the course of the season.

The replay system has been redone to include full speed replays. In-game stadium atmosphere was a big focus. The number of crowd animations have been doubled, attendance logic re-worked to contain factors such as day of the week, matchup, score of the game and more.

We should see and hear more about it on Thursday, during the Twitch stream at 5:00 PM ET.

  1. Weird hearing that Harold is gone after only one year, thought he did fine. Does DeRosa actually call games? I don't think I've heard any he's done, just seen him on MLB Tonight. He's really good on there so I don't mind.
The other thing about them all recording together is what I've wanted for years. I just hope the conversations sound natural now because before they've always sounded so disjointed and scripted. It's great that they are finally making these improvements.

He's only a studio analyst so he's a bit of an odd choice.
I'm guessing Derosa was a) less expensive than Harold or b) had more availability than Harold or c) some combination of both a and b. But anyway, probably wasn't just a straight up simple case of wanting to replace Harold with Mark.
I can see some of the PBR on the jerseys. I love the shimmer that the letters had on the front of the Phillies Jersey. I think it will give us jersey freaks something to tide us over in the looks department until they can really overhaul them. Good job devs!

i always think, that they should put them all in a room together, and just watch games and commentate naturally off that. i know in real life commentating they get notes and such from directors and such but, i always think that would make it sound more real.
Disappointing as usual. The one unique voice they had that sounded the most realistic out of the 3 in terms of video game sound to real life, they replace with another dull/monotone styled in game voice.
I literally think this game will be his first time color commentating. They said in the video he makes his debut

I'm thinking the decision to replace Harold was not out of not wanting him anymore. I feel like the new method for recording audio may have been more intensive and required more hours of work than Harold may have been able to commit to with his busy schedule. So instead they decide to try out DeRosa, who doesn't have a whole lot else going on at the moment, and maybe he saw this as an opportunity to break into the color-commentary business. I always liked him on MLB Tonight, he has a lot of energy but doesn't say as many of those head scratching things Harold is known for, and I think he'll be a fine replacement for Harold.
I think if they would just try making OSD more dynamic and show things like WAR and other analytic stats it would probably make the presentation much better instead of trying to find the holy grail 3rd man in the booth.
That video honestly took the wind out of my sails a bit. I respect they got everyone in the booth together and are trying to make things more dynamic, but I would have preferred Reynolds sticking around in that context (If we're dropping anyone, I'd pick Plesac).
As was mentioned, it was likely logistics over simply excluding Harold, but it's a bit disappointing nonetheless as the only thing wrong with HR last year was a lack of line variety. His voice flowed better than anyone, IMO.
That said, I'm happy for the change in approach, at least, and I'll wait for the dev breakdown before passing any real judgement.
Hopefully this time Matt is recording without a cold.
I already said in the other thread, but I was kind of turned away by the similar sounding voices of Steve Lyons and Eric Karros, and the ilk of DeRo sounding somewhat similar to Plesac removes some of the versatility aspect you'd expect in the booth. Though I believe you'll heard Mark talk more about the hitting and Dan talk about the pitching.
The "same booth" stuff sounds good, but again the lines are just going to be so long that the conversations will get repetitive rather quickly. Maybe not much we can ever do there though. I think as long as the situations are dynamic enough it won't be too bad (so if they talk about how we have been hot recently, as long as it's because we have been then I'll be good with it).
Another small thing I've noticed in videos so far that I've really liked, regarding crowd logic, is that there seems to be a much more realistic dispersal of fans in lower-attendance games. In previous years, the crowd would basically just be evenly distributed in each section, and that would result in a bunch of fans essentially just sitting by themselves. But that's not realistic. People go to games in groups and the new logic seems to incorporate that by clumping the remaining fans together so no one is (or very few people are) just sitting by themselves. This makes me incredibly happy because it's something that has always irked me about the crowd in the past, but I never thought it was something that would actually be considered to improve. Good stuff! :waytogo:
I agree with the sentiment around Harold. Liked what he did in 17. I wish they would have found a way to keep him around, and ran with two different crews. This would have helped each game sound a bit different. I know there was probably money and time that comes into these decisions.
Funny how last year at this time everyone complained about Harold Reynolds being in the game and this year everyone is complaining he is out. Interesting.

Full speed replays is a nice addition, but one of these years I’m hoping to hear that they focused on “broadcast cinematography”.
I would love for the presentation devs to just stream real broadcasts side by side with the game, and try matching the camera cuts, ball in play camera angles, etc. Real broadcasts typically have more camera cuts, and more zoomed angles than The Show has.

I neither recall nor echoed that sentiment. If I spoke poorly about something, it's because I just don't like the game's (or most games') commentary structure.

You hit it dead on the head, just think if Harold was in the booth commentary at the same time.Last year's hate=this year's miss I don't get it
This is a video game. Why complicate things with a 3 man booth? Two, interacting should do it. The fact that Matt is still there is a real bummer. I'm certainly aware of how hard it must be (if they did in fact dump Matt), but geez...this guy is so stale.
Oh, well, never use the commentators anyway, so....enjoy.
OK really not sure what to think right now after seeing this!
On one hand I am SUPER exited that they FINALLY recorded all 3 commentators together in the booth with hopefully lots and lots of hours of recording time. In fact I am hoping they completely removed all the old scripted lines from all of the commentators including Matty V and 18 will have 100% all new commentary. However is it just me or did they still sound kind of dull and scripted in that very short video preview? And why was Harold Reynolds replaced after only one year? And is Mark DeRosa really going to be any better then what Harold Reynolds bright to the game?
I just want MLB The Show commentary to finally sound way more like real life and what 2K Sports does for its Basketball and previously for their baseball games!!!
As far as the other things mentioned in the video the new replay system sounds very promising. Not only fast/real time replays but I also hope perhaps along with that they have more and better angles of the replays and also hopefully they don't get cut off to quickly and let the whole play be replayed in full! Also more crowd animations is always welcomed!
Hearing nothing about Pre and or Post game shows, Female on field reporter and new broadcasts presentation is disappointing.
This was a tiny preview of what we will see on Thursday "Hopefully" so I will hold major judgment until then. But saying I am a bit underwhelmed would be an understatement :(
Crossing all my fingers what we see this coming Thursday will get all of us very excited! :y220:

I guarantee you this is not happening.
New scorebug for one of the presentations.
Was hoping for a Fox Sports baseball style where it shows the Pitcher and batters names on it but o well this one still looks nice and a little different from 17 scorebug.

I'll take the specific season commentary for your team or player (hopefully works with Player Lock) but the funny thing is I play 17 with the commentary completely turned off. I am used to playing MLB The Show this way now! So I was really hoping for stadium noise and crowd noise level and reactions to be improved this year.
Just watched game 3 of Royals vs Mets! Wow that crowd is so pumped in the first inning! I would love to play a version of MLB The Show in that sounded like that!

    I could be wrong though.

He did, and it sounded that way. It was a bit of an inappropriate moment, though. The Diamondbacks got two runners on with no outs, and they were the road team. Then the crowd started riling up. I understand they can get noisy in those scenarios as well, but it's not like it was the big hitter and they had two strikes on the batter.
Of course, around that time it was also noted that it's in its WIP stage, so that kind of stuff is expected. But yes, I think we'll get more appropriated crowd engagement this year.

I got the PS4 hooked up to 24 inch set and a sat dish on a small 19 inch set, while playing the game the smaller tv has a real mlb or nhl game on and I'm listening to that.
Rarely have the audio of the show on while playing.
I never liked the 3 man booth would prefer a 2 man booth with a studio show or on field reporter.

He seems to have a lot of detractors when it comes to his real life commentary although I've personally never minded him. But the important thing is that he seemed to have a natural talent for recording lines. He's the only reason I didn't play with muted commentary last year since they got rid of the solo booth option. Disappointed to see him go though I'll forget in a heartbeat if they give us a 'smart' solo booth option. Sounds like they're going in the exact opposite direction of that however.

I too love listing to real MLB broadcasts TV or radio while playing MLB The Show. And in the summertime I love having my windows open and smelling my neighbors barbecuing, drinking beer and smoking. It really helps make me feel I am at the ball park when playing :) lol
I actually like what I see from this preview.
    - I understand everybody disliking DeRosa replacing Harold Reynolds, but I’m thinking the new trio recording in the same booth will make the commentary more fresh and fluid.
    - Liking the new replays they showed. Looked like some new camera angles and I’m always up for variation in that aspect.
    - Hoping for some new pre game and postgame (especially postgame) presentations. The player interview/spotlight has been the same for a few years and definitely needs an upgrade in my opinion.
Look forward to hearing more this week.
I like what they've added but it's a bit limited if what is in the video is the full extent of the presentation improvements and I also enjoyed Reynolds more than any of the other commentators.
What I am/was really hoping for was a much more intense, explosive highlight reel of the big moments, fast paced with angles that get you excited - whether this is what they're describing in the video and what we will get, I have no idea. If you watch a real game you are less likely to see a full highlight (the ball being hit, flying through the air and into the stand) and more likely to see a rapid fire cut shot of each. Who knows, maybe that's what they've done. Sounds a bit picky, I know, but if you play a full 162 game season then repetition can become a pain so I was hoping for different pre-game intros especially with pre-game or post-game analysis from the booth.
I also wanted more stat overlays other than just the familiar batter walk-up nameplate and stats. Again, maybe they've added more and we just haven't seen them yet.
I wish they could have found an announcer whose voice was more distinct. All these guys kind of sound the same to me and there's not much life to their line recordings.
Jon Miller and Joe Morgan are still my favorite baseball video game broadcast duo.

Ok so not exactly the same but what I am really gettng at is none of the 3 are very unique one of a kind voices like Harry kalas, Vin Scully, Harry Caray and Gary Thorne for example.
I just watched the video and noticed that during judge's homerun the final angle as the ball was landing into the crowd was looking in towards the field from left field (spectator view from second deck in left). I hope this is a new angle we may get from no doubters on occasion. Gives the feeling as a fan watching the ball land several rows in front of you watching the fans reach for the ball. Pretty sweet actually. Hopefully this is something new!
Huge fan of DeRosa. Very intrigued on hearing the group recorded dialogue. Really hoping for more stat overlays, and contextual info drops throughout the game.

Nope, I loved Harold from the beginning, and I said as much when anyone dissed him. Dan was the weak link last year imo. I like him in real life, but his commentary sounded like he was just reading lines whereas Harold had a natural flow.
Another small thing I wish SDS would change.
For post season games I wish the scorebug would say for example "NLDS, ALDS, WORLD SERIES Game 1 instead of just saying "POSTSEASON". Also "NLDS Game 2 PHILLIES LEAD 1-0"
And last but not least they should add real MLB Network in between inning batter due up overlay! I like that it shows what each batter has done so far on the day example Todd Frazier 1-2
I am a presentation nerd so these little things kind of bother me.
The real MLB Network has this so why is it not in MLB The Show 18?
I don't hold any hope for commentary at all, so not concerned about it sports games you just can't keep it fresh, it's the way it is in gaming. it's not possible unless it was updated weekly.
    Presentation however looks great!

    Anyone have a pic?

I do but it’s not letting me share it. It’s around 0:40 in the video when Turner meets him at the plate. Not sure if they’re Stance because no other player, as far as I know, has had Stance socks, but they’re definitely new and different.

Totally agree about the highlight reel. It's been stale for years now.
Not a fan of Harold Reynolds so I'm not sad to see him go, but I don't think Mark DeRosa was the right replacement. I honestly have never liked The Show's insistance on having a 3-man booth. It just doesn't flow well together. There could be a 1000 different lines recorded together but having the 3-man booth just muddles things. If I could have my dream booth I'd take someone like Brian Anderson (Brewers TV announcer) or Jim Powell (Braves radio announcer) and John Smoltz. That would be a great combination. I love listening to Anderson do playoff games for TBS and Smoltz is entertaining and insightful.
Now, as far as the video goes, the biggest thing that I liked that looked like new animation and physics was the Josh Donaldson broken bat chopper at 0:45. Also there was a new animation of a SS leaping to try to snag a liner. Both looked so much better than previous years.
    videobastard
Disappointing as usual. The one unique voice they had that sounded the most realistic out of the 3 in terms of video game sound to real life, they replace with another dull/monotone styled in game voice.

that's a stylistic choice. The development team wants the commentary to be purposefully dry. lazy sunday afternoon baseball.
regardless I look forward to The Show 18

You can say the same about Matt V. He is great in real life, awful in game. That is the fruits of reading lines!

Harold did fine reading lines. But the real important thing here is they are all recording together. That should be conducive to a more natural sounding conversation between the 3. Part of the reason it's always sounded so boring and sterile is because when they were recording lines, they'd have nothing and no one to naturally react to.
I like the crowd stuff. I'm currently playing in the ALDS and the crowd is just off. they aren't as loud as they should be so if it's been improved that will be a plus. Not going to talk about the commentary stuff since I need to actually hear it first.

Kind of indifferent on this, more like a wait and see how they sound. I did like Reynolds though, Plesac I can take or leave.

100% agree. However, I usually only listen to the commentary 1 out of every 5 games I play. Usually have MLB Network Radio in my ear while The Show plays through the sound bar with commentary off. Has somewhat kept me from predicting what they say before they even say it.

Im talking about the in game voice. I stated that in my post. Its the same with matt v, his real life voice does not compare to his in game voice. The video game recordings have been poorly done. The one stand out being harold reynolds, with his recording sounding similar to his real life broadcast voice.
I think the biggest issue is there is no dynamics to the commentary
If the score is 15-0 in the 9th, with 2 outs and a home run is his to make it 15-0 they will always say 'hang on a minute it aint over yet they still have life in them'. when it really should say 'it's all but to late'
and if a miracle comeback did happen. their would be no mention of them saying 'holy cow back from 15-0 down can you believe it! it would just be a generic line thrown in.
and everytime they talk about a starting pitching they talk about "he has a ERA of XXXX, he is not doing so well' he has a ERA of 2! he is doing great!
same with averages. they never talk about other important stats like OBP or WHIp or even WAR
    Formula1Racing
Oh well, another year with turning off the commentary option in the game, what else is new!

Just wondering, what would make you happy with the commentary? Or at least turn it on? Not being confrontational, just curious as to what people are looking for.

They also have so few player specific lines. That always annoys me. I don't know why it would be hard to say "Here's a comebacker to Kershaw, and he makes the toss for first to retire the side." Just something as simple as that instead of "it's a comebacker to the pitcher, and he throws him out." It's so bland and generic.

What good would that even be in a franchise mode that is disconnected from reality though? For example, I don't want to hear about Harper's 20 game hit streak or Kershaw throwing a no-no in his last start if those happened in real life, but didn't happen in my franchise.
I think NBA references too much real-life stuff during its franchise mode, to be honest....

I think the best video game commentary was the old All-Star baseball games with Thom Brennanman and Steve Lyons. Sounded more like a real broadcast than any other game I can think of.
Also, as I mentioned before, I think The Show's biggest issue is having a 3-man booth. Just doesn't flow.

I would not make any reference to the current season, your right there, but I think their would be potential add in new lines, particularly for rookies that have no name audio and just say 'number 27' that would be more important.

I'll concede the no-names actually getting names thing mentioned above, but I don't see that as a strong enough reason to call someone who works a very high-profile job into the SDS recording booth during the season (actually, I'm pretty sure Matt would just laugh at that notion)
    ninertravel
I think what people are looking for simply can't be done., that would be to have weekly updated commentary lines.

I think tone of voice recording and the recording process done together is what most people are looking for as a foundation to start with.
That is actually achievable because we have seen examples of it done already. When listening to gary thorne in mlb 2k, his recording sounded like his real life broadcasting voice, same thing with harold reynolds in mlb the show17.
As far as recording together, there was mention of it in the trailer so at least there starting to implement that way of recording. But it would blend in better if matt v redid some of his play by play lines, especially the ones where he sounded like he had a cold during the recording.

Well unless he is getting paid enough.. but I know 2 guys that will be called a number this year Torress and Acuna, and even if their audio is in the game we will get a robot voice that sounds like a ransom note.
I don't see why they don't have matt record those audio names before the season anyway. there is no legal issues against doing that just only release it when the rookies are in the majors. There is plenty of other generic audio names in the database of names not even in the game.
Poor Harold got brutalized last year when they revealed him as an addition and now everyone seems sad he’s gone which makes me think I’ll reserve my opinion of DeRosa until I’ve played the game awhile.
For me in a a perfect world I’d love it if Buck Martinez was involved one day
Nice to see analyst Mark DeRosa joining the commentary team. Lets hope they reworked the commentary and that it's more dynamic and adaptive throughout the course of a season. Big franchise player here.
The changes to the replay system is nice to hear. Hopefully they removed and reworked the camera replay when a batter gets a hit to only show the batter hitting and getting out of the box instead of the full replay.
In-game stadium atmosphere and attendance logic is nice too.
Looking forward to the next twitch stream!

We can only hope. One of the dumbest animations in the game. There is that and the First Base ump that giving the double safe sign.
Commentary is not a HUGE deal for me as I tend to tune it out when it gets repetitive (not turn it off, but I check out mentally from it like you would from a nagging gf/wife). That said, this seems like a bit of a step back. Not that I'm blaming SDS because they can't really hog-tie Harold, throw him in a stolen white utility van, and force him to commentate in a dark studio with no windows...Harold has to be on board. So, poor Kirby plugs in who he can.
My worry is this might take us back to the can't-tell-apart-Psycho-from-Eric-Karros days in having 2 redundant color commentators. Reynolds and Plesac worked well together because they sound so different. Coming at this from a strictly auditory vantage point, I hope DeRo doesn't sound as much like Plesac as I think he might.
    PhilliesFan13
Funny how last year at this time everyone complained about Harold Reynolds being in the game and this year everyone is complaining he is out. Interesting.
Sent from my SM-G930P using Tapatalk

Sort of revisionist history, imo. Harold Reynolds is polarizing in real life. He frequently says stupid things that reveal maybe he isn't with modern stats or that he didn't exactly prepare for his assignment. So he tends to deal heavily in old school platitudes and "back in my day " to eat up dead air. He can often try too hard and talk too much as well. For these reasons, many pan his commentary. Even ridicule it at times.
On the other hand, he is a nice guy and can be quite charismatic. He'll even come up with a relevant story from time to time.
Lots of people enjoy his work and lots of people don't. That said, those of us who don't enjoy his stuff in real life noticed that his scripted/organized stuff in the game was much better. Actually pretty good because it prevented him from turning into impromptu, illogical, off-the-cuff Harold which is the worst kind of Harold. If you lay it out for him in pieces and he basically voice acts his canned lines, he does a good job and it sounds fine.
So it's not that everyone is just changing their minds to do so only because he was taken out, but rather there was a process involved.
    AUTiger1

BA would be a good choice. He's one of my favorites for pbp guys. Even though he's the Brewers' home market guy...gross. Some have probably heard his work on TBS before.
All i want to know and care about most about are a few things.
    1) do the commentators speak about trades during the game would be kool if they did.
    2) Have the stale world series victory presentation changed at all like cmon guys we grind for that moment and all we get is that.
3)Hoping franchise mode got a lot of love this year.
Other then that i buy this game every year and i will still buy it.

And some that aren't in the database that I wish were. Names that aren't too uncommon like Blocker and Rizer. But they're not in the game but those are the names of a couple of my cousins (family names) and it would be great if they finally put those in the game. Thankfully a few years back they finally added my name (Bliss).
Still no logo on catcher’s helmet and no chalks degradation ( other than when sliding).
Not the end of the world, just don’t understand why they removed that from MLB ‘16.

I dont disagree, theres no reason to record during the season at all for Franchise mode. Too numerous to mention the amount of different sports game who have pulled it off.
I'm sure this isn't a popular opinion but they might be better off hiring voice actors to get the best performances (especially for emotional moments. Records, championships, late game comebacks, etc.) rather than professional announcers who have never acted before. Plus I bet you'd be able to get a lot more studio time with VO actors and at lower cost so you could record a lot more lines.
I am for anything/anyone who will make the commentary sound like we are at a real game and in the booth together will make it more realistic sounding IMO. I don't care who is in the booth as long as it flows with the game and is interesting , insightful and funny if needs be.I am excited for this years game and think it is a step in the right direction.
I love this game. It’s a day one buy for me every year and this year looks great. All that to say, DeRosa sounds terrible.  Very small sample size, but ugh. Can’t stand him. Reynolds I thought was more natural and fun than anyone else. Hope I’m proven wrong.
It really doesn't matter if they get Morgan Freeman or Jesus Christ himself in the booth. Until they revamp the approach and do a better job creating the commentary, it won't ever really sound any better. And this preview sounds like more of the same, honestly. Still too much rambling about nonsense, not enough concise sentences and not enough dead air to let the game speak for itself.
Wasn't DeRosa interviewed for the Nationals managerial opening a few months back? How odd would it have been had he gotten the job and then did commentary as you were playing a Nationals game.

I already saw it in one of the videos. Pitcher was walking up on the mound, glove upside down in his hand (and then it cut off), so, I'm guessing it's sadly still there.

Doesn't bother me that it's still in, just wish they would add a few new scenes every year to add some variety instead of sticking with the same 2 or 3 for years and years. But that's my opinion on alot of the presentaion scenes in the show.
Edit: one thing i would like to see improved with commentary/presentation is that the first time through the lineup we get a fair bit of contextual commentary about what the player did last game or has done during the season, but for the rest of the game the commentary just seems to fall into the same routine where we only get basic info/stats for the players current game like hit a single or popped out last at bat. Would be great if we could get some of that contextual commentary randomly mentioned in later at bats. Also just some basic stuff like if there is a risp what is the hitters/pitchers avg with a risp this season ect.
Are we certain HR is out of the game altogether? It just seems a little odd that they didn't say that he was replaced by DeRo. I may be reading too much into it but I guess we'll find out Thursday.

I would have liked to see more about the presentation features that are new this year, they mentioned about Crowds going home if it is a blow out, I wonder if this is for team performance as well, and this year we will see Miami seats all empty. and if a really bad team has a surprise run that all of a sudden the stadium fills up. And that weekends and Sundays nights the stadiums are sell outs. but on a Tuesday day game it looks dead

Well, they still have the Thursday Twitch stream to do. I'm sure they will flesh out things a bit more. I actually prefer to get a little tease on Monday and the main course on Thursday. When they do the longer vids on Monday, it sucks all the air out of the Twitch stream (like last week).

that sounds awesome, also to go with this hope the atmosphere comes into play with this as well. so that the sound of the crowd isn't sounding like 80k people in Miami in the 9th innings like it does now when their is only 5k there

My hope is on Thursday they will deep dive into the dynamic commentary over the course of franchise mode. Also historical matchup OSD’s and discussions and that also being dynamic in your own franchise universe.
Presentation really needs a step up in terms of statistical discussion and more OSD’s.
The fact that one of the 'features' is real speed replays says a lot to me. I'm not sure I've ever thought 'man, i really wish that replay was full speed'. No doubt it adds something but they are clutching at straws a bit if thats one of the main 'features'.

I really hope they removed the music that plays when they show replays of homeruns from earlier in the game. It's so out of place for a random song to play while showing the replay.
Man, I feel like the only one that didn't like Reynolds in the booth. I think he's good at in studio analysis, but I did not like his commentating style at all. Although listening to DeRosa I don't know if I'll like him either...
Also, would have been great to show new crowd animations. Unless they forgot and thought those were new. In which case we got none. Lol.
Glad recorded in the same room this year, but, and this isn't necessarily the fault of the game designers, they can't record enough audio for it not to get really repetitive to a player that plays a ton like myself. All I can hope is that the lines are the least annoying they can be.
We need a new post game animation sequence. Hope that changes. But probably won't.
I like the full speed replays, but like the above poster said, if that's your feature, if that's the thing you go to your fan base and say "see what we did this off-season!" then you are really scraping the bottom of the barrel.
Realistically, you could have shown me this video without any other sort of marketing or anything and I'd have thought it was 17 with a voiceover and some colored lines.
You don’t care where I sent this from

I had a pretty extensive suggestion about this once last year. The crux of it is this: they need shorter lines.
Never really cared for Reynolds that much - part of that is not really his fault though. Seems like the game is programmed for him to give that same description of the starting pitcher for both sides ... and the repetitiveness always bugged me. That and when he would say that the 8th place hitter needed to give the pitcher a breather - HUH? I always thought it was the leadoff man who needed to take a few pitches to give his pitcher a chance to rest before going back on the bump.
I am looking forward to DeRosa. Part of that is being a Braves fan and his Braves ties.
I am also excited about the new crowd dynamics. Always thought it was unrealistic for so many fans to be present every game all game. Looking forward to seeing the crowd thin out during blowouts.

It was iffy and minuscule, at best. It seems like this rewrite of the algorithm will be a vast improvement. Time will tell on that one.
And it doesn't just need to be a blowout. There could be a lot of improved logic in this area that they may have accounted for.
So crowds have been reworked? Well if true and it works my Mets/Whitesox Franchise should have empty ballparks after opening day
Sent from my iPhone using Operation Sports
Could be me but I always thought crowd logic was already in the game. I’ve seen ballparks empty during a blow out or see larger attendance rates for rivalry games.
Unless it’s truly noticeable this year I don’t understand the big headline

Full speed replays however are very welcomed. I’ve been suggesting this for years.
Real MLB Broadcasts don’t do slow motion replays on EVERY replay.
Saw a couple of new HR Cams, really hoping those can be turned off again. I feel they implement more cams to fully show off the Bat Flips in the game but it looks nothing like a real MLB Broadcast.
If the HR Celebration Cams were used in Replays then yes please, they show Bat Flips replays all the time. But not as the batter flips the bat, as they are looking at the ball/fielders.
Also, really hope they fix the “Ball Goes over Green Monster, but we can’t get a camera up there so just trust us on this one”.
The camera should follow the ball into the stands, no matter where it lands. It shouldn’t stop at the wall and see the ball land in the distance.
HR for Dero can’t be too terrible. I like Dero and he makes really solid points on MLB Net all the time. Recording in the studio should help a lot.

Really looking forward to seeing the dynamic crowd stuff in action. But empty parks in and of themselves won't be new: I've played many, many games with sub-10,000 attendance. I love those games. :y1:
Btw, is anyone else surprised that MLB doesn't stop The Show from portraying bad teams drawing poorly? They block other things they perceive as being bad for their brand and I can't imagine the Phillies ownership, to use one example among many, would be happy knowing that the premier baseball video game made their park look abandoned these past couple years.

I actually think this used to be a thing. Perhaps if they can prove that their game provides attendance that matches that of their record and such, then maybe it's not a bad thing. For example, if you win three WS titles in a row with the Marlins, then the game better be showing nothing but sellouts thereafter.
In other words, as long as it is the game dictating it and not the developers, then perhaps it is okay.
Happy to see Reynolds out. He has one of the most annoying voices of all time. Not sure if DeRosa would have been my pick to replace him but let's see what he brings to the table.
The fluctuation of attendance has always been in the game. I think this year you'll just notice it more. Like late arriving fans to LA. Fans actually filing out during blowouts. Bad teams will have smaller attendance numbers etc......
Also fans talk on their phones, drink from cups, react accordingly etc....... They basically reworked the A.I. of the crowd.

In Franchise for Example- With Dynamic attendance. Does it vary from year to year. Like if I'm the " Dogers- but I have 5 straight losing seasons, no playoffs, Budget gets decreased etc. In year 6 will the attendance logic be any different from year one? will I still see sellouts? or will the Game consider me a bad team. and reflect that.
    grangdj77
    Madden does it.

Football is only 17 weeks with 16 games (once a week) for each team... Baseball 162 games per team (multiple games a day every single day) or even the week-loads would be an expensive task not only financially, but development wise.
Let's be a little more grounded here.

unfortunately I think I agree with you :(
All the years of sending photos in hasn't amounted to anything. Don't see why this year would be different.

I really feel bad for Phillies fans, because it seems like their park is way off every year. It isn't anything I'd personally notice because I'm not that familiar with the park in real life or in the game. But man, I see all kinds of posts every year around this time of things in that park that needs changed, and it never seems to be addressed.

It's always been my main complaint about the game honestly. The Liberty Bell is never lit properly. In the game it is always lit up white and all of it is lit. In real life, only the outline of it is lit and the color changes throught the game between red or blue. Liberty Bell celebration has never been accurate either. Back in the 2016 season they added a new small HD scoreboard in right field attached to the second deck. In MLB 17 they added a board but all it was was black with the inning box across the whole thing. Not even close to real life. Like they didn't even try.

I know I'll probably get attacked by the OS grizzled vets who think their beloved franchises can do no wrong but, that was a very underwhelming video. I thought Harold was a very refreshing voice in the booth last year and they replace him with a guy that sounds and talks just like the other guys. Also, no new features were announced for franchise mode besides some very minor things. I hope they have more announcements regrading franchise mode.

Probably will hear something when the franchise mode deep dive happens in a few weeks.
I mostly play road to the show so something I've always wanted in terms of Crowd A.I. is for them (and announcers) to react when you're playing in your home state or on a former team. You see opposing team fans holding up signs that say "Welcome home ", "Texas. Major export; ". Just world building stuff that connects you more to your story. Also I want to see the slow trickle of my player's jersey as I gradually establish myself in the league and it would be cool if you saw some fans sporting your old Jerseys in the stands so say it's a Giants/Dodgers game but you used to be on the Padres you see one fan in the stands rocking your Padres jersey. Just to make you feel like your story has a history and the AI in the game remembers it.
Another element of presentation I'd like to see in the game - a starting pitcher should leave the game to a standing 'O' if he has worked a great game. Seems sad to me that a reliever comes in for a starter who performed well with almost no fanfare whatsoever. The pitcher should exit with the crowd on their feet and his teammates in the dugout clapping his effort.

That actually does happen, but not nearly as often as it should.

One other little piece I noticed in this video.............don't know what cleats these are, but they are definitely not in 17
I believe these are the new Trouts. Seen them in a couple other videos.

This addition is my personal favorite this year. I really never liked Harold Reynolds on the broadcast. I think DeRosa will bring a fresh sound to the game.

You know the funny thing with madden and EA was they stopped doing dynamic crowds because the NFL didn't wanna be seen as having empty seats with jags games etc at least that was the execuse anyway.

Yeah, you don't see the outside of the shoe in the video so you don't know exactly which one it is by comparing it to those in that site. I doubt they have a generic Nike shoe in the game.

    Yeah you’re right, my bad!

Nah I thought the same thing initially

The new Trout 4's say NIKE on the inside of the shoe like that. If you click on one of that model in the link that was provided, and look at the different pics you can see thats what it is

I think Steve_SDS liked a couple of the posts early in this thread speculating about how Harold decided not to return. That spells it out to me. There's not going to be 3 color guys in the same booth anyway, lol.

Get with the times, man. They can put as many color guys in the booth as they want.

I had a pretty extensive suggestion about this once last year. The crux of it is this: they need shorter lines.

This post sums up my beef with commentary pretty well.
It's like SDS goes out of their way to make commentary be attention grabbing and distinct, when really it should be the opposite.
I feel like The Show could make their commentary WAY better in the course of about 10 minutes, just by deleting a few lines, and changing the programming so that certain situations have only, say, a 30% chance of triggering any line at all (as opposed to the current setup where every tiny event in the game has a 100% chance of triggering commentary specifically about that event.

Really? I don't see (or hear) that.
I agree that you could make a case that they could/should have the announcers shut up and leave more time for the game to 'breathe', but I don't know that it's designed to be "attention grabbing and distinct". While they're constantly talking, there really isn't a ton of emotion in the commentary, let alone anything that really tries to grab your attention.

Maybe baseball should go the NFL route and cram as many guys into a booth as physically possible. Like the pre/post-game shows where more is always more. Let's get Al Leiter, Bob Costas, Buck Martinez, Alex Rodriguez, Barry Bonds, Jim Bowden, Keith Law, and Shannon Sharpe into a booth together and just see what happens.

Who else is actually quite excited about the attendance logic? God I'm a nerd....

It would be awesome if they added near-empty stadiums after long rain delays.

I am. I'm also interested to see if they incorporate it into the broadcast somehow ... like in Dodger Stadium, saying in the middle innings that the crowd has finally arrived or in a blow out that everyone will have a chance at a foul ball ... something like that.
    Quick questions:
What happens when You have Aaron Judge in franchise mode on the Yankees, and then get gets traded to the Rays for example. Moving forward in franchise, will it still show Judges Chambers at Yankee stadium even though he is not on the team?
I know this was in the past aswell with King Felix, but I don't remember what happened as he retired or got traded
