Madden NFL 21
Madden NFL 21 Patch Available - Includes Gameplay Tuning, New Superstar Abilities, New X-Factor Players & More - Patch Notes
A new Madden NFL 21 game update has arrived today, featuring some gameplay updates, 4 new Super Star Abilities, 3 new X-Factor Players, 12 new Superstar Players, Avatar Customization UI improvements and more.
Check out the patch notes below.
Gameplay Updates:
- Fixed an issue causing the ball velocity to not always reach the desired speed on some specific QB passing animations
- Tuning to improve deep zone defenders reaction to crossing routes from a single-receiver side for highly rated defenders
- Tuning to slow down cut-reaction time for linebackers in man-coverage facing away from the QB
- Fixed a run-block targeting issue with the Gun Wing Flex Wk Inside Zone play
- Fixed a rare issue causing QB’s to appear to use an under-pressure pass while not actually being under pressure
- New Superstar Abilities and Superstar X-Factor update, based on NFL Player’ performance up to this point in the 2020 NFL Season
- Fixed an issue causing defenders in man coverage vs. a ‘block-and-release’ RB to sometimes instantly switch their assignments to blitz when seeing the RB start to block, resulting in the RB being left uncovered once he would run his route thereafter
Newly Added Superstar Abilities:
- Film Study – Defenders with this ability will have full vision of plays the offense has run 5 times each quarter; via coach cam.
- DEV NOTE: Based on the feedback received from the Madden 21 beta, we re-worked this ability to provide more balance across our multiple game modes. One of those adjustments is based on players telling us it was too easy for the ability to activate, making it too powerful. In response, the ability will now require a variable number of repeated offensive play calls before activating. This number will scale up or down based on the current quarter as well as the game’s quarter length settings, with the required amount always being displayed via X-Factor Vision in pre-play. Additionally, defender knowledge of these repeated plays will be wiped out when a quarter ends, giving the offense a bit more leeway with how they run their play-calling.
- Backlash – Ball carriers with this ability will cause increased fatigue penalties against their tackler when tackled via a non-conservative tackle.
- Recuperation – Players with this ability will recover from the effects of fatigue at an increased rate between plays.
- Honorary Lineman – Non-offensive linemen with this ability will frequently win Impact Blocks when blocking defensive backs in the open field

Looking for Madden NFL 21 franchise mode update 2 of 3 details? Well, it’s scheduled to arrive sometime in mid-January. Here are some of the things the team is working on for that update. More details will arrive closer to official release date. All of these franchise mode additions will also be added to the next-gen version of Madden NFL 21.
Personnel Logic Improvements
New guidelines for CPU draft logic to assist teams in whether they should or should not have interest in drafting a first round QB. Addresses teams drafting two first round QBs in consecutive years, along with other roster-context considerations QBs a more authentic window to develop before a replacement is considered to be drafted.
Commissioner Controls: Undo FA Signings – Offseason Only
Commissioners are able to undo FA signings in the offseason directly through the transaction log. Simply click on a signing and revert it to send the player back into the free agent pool.
Commissioner Controls: Team Override Settings
Giving commissioners of leagues the ability to turn on/off or allow users to keep individual settings for Heat Seeker tackling, Ball Hawk, and Switch assist – one of our top requested commissioner requests, this creates a way to level the playing field regarding assist features.
Commissioner Draft Tools
Giving commissioners the ability to assign autopilot during the draft, along with pause/resume functionality. This has been a top community request for a number of years now.
Commissioner House Rules: Play Cool-Down and Repeat Play Limits
After these settings made their debut last year in MUT and Superstar KO, House Rules became one of the most requested features for franchise players and we are incredibly excited to bring them to you. Take control as a Commissioner and dictate how many times a play can be called in a game, and how long a player must wait before calling the same play again.

One theme for this virtual event was allowing the player to see and feel what playing Madden 21 is like as a next-gen experience, and that starts with the utilization of the PS5 controller. So, what does that mean? For starters, controller haptics on the DualSense wireless controller for the PS5 means you can sense the pressure of an oncoming blitz, attempting a game-winning field goal or the impact of a perfectly timed hit stick.
And as a Cowboy fan I kinda got a chuckle out of this:
The following players are no longer Superstars, losing all abilities
-Demarcus Lawrence, Cowboys
Ooof. So he went from X-factor to no abilities at all? Can't say it's not deserved though, with how far he fell off a cliff.

Yeah I'm glad Wentz and Ertz finally lost their abilities. Ertz has been hurt, but both of them have been awful this year and don't deserve abilities. Give them to guys that actually make plays.

Unreal they aren’t fixing this yet. This is a pretty big download too. 3.7 gigs.
No because it wouldn't make sense. Each franchise has it's own progression that goes beyond the current ratings so giving abilities to existing franchise players wouldn't really be possible. In some franchises these guys have already retired.
Yep. Your existing franchise is its own universe - the changes to the rosters, including X-Factor distribution, don't affect it.
Which probably means you won't see any players with Film study or any of the other new ones until at least the draft, either.
is it for current gen or next gen ?
Where qbs will randomly keep dropping back when underpressure and taking a sack for large yardage loss.

Also, trying to equip Patrick Ricard with “honorary offensive linemen” and it’s not an option.

If it’s not in the patch notes they probably didn’t fix it unfortunately. Love how they say “our updates are based on community feedback” and yet, they haven’t fixed a glitch as talked about as this one. They should also fix Ai passing because the CPU has no ability to pass the football down the field

Beyond the bugs this game was much better OOB in my opinion. QB's were so varied and there was no dropback glitch. I wanted to play it constantly.
Way more scrambling and throwing away in the right situations.
As the patches have piled up I play and have some good games but just more and more that are not fun. The CPU play is way less varied. Less scrambling. Less shots downfield.
I'd go back but my freakin PS4 constantly updates the game even if though I have it marked as not to update. And I can't go offline either. I'm thinking of reinstalling and not updating to just play for a little bit and see if I am remembering wrong.
A - the opposing offense calls one single unique play 5 times in a quarter, or
B - the opposing offense calls any previously-called play 5 times in a quarter (so it could be repeating Play A once, Play B once, and Play C three times)
Thanks!
Ooof. So he went from X-factor to no abilities at all? Can't say it's not deserved though, with how far he fell off a cliff.
It's wildly undeserved according to Pro Football Focus. The site has Lawrence graded as the third-highest edge defender in the league in 2020, behind only Khalil Mack and T.J. Watt.
Ezekiel Elliott, however? Please take all of his abilities away.

This team doesn't value PFF information at all. Their ratings and abilities are determined completely at their discretion and "tape study"
There’s no logic and it’s arbitrary. The ratings team does as they see fit regardless of empirical data
Please fix the CPU logic EA!!
Please fix the CPU logic EA!!
This is so hit or miss. Sometimes they realize what's going on and play like the end of a half or game, and others it seems like the hurry up offense dosen't trigger or something. It's annoying.
This probably got skipped over by most gamers, but with how high they are rated (positional rating wise), having/losing these abilities is not that big of a deal as those high ratings will still play out within the formulas etc...
The team does consider PFF's grades, but not consistently.
I went through and adusted x-factors league wide about a month ago in my CFM using the roster I released. Most are based on the last 3 seasons (like the ratings used), except for the rookies of course:

It's kind of weird the Titans elite offense is not recognized with something outside of Henry. Like, Saffold is probably deserving as a run blocker. AJ Brown is an absolute YAC monster. Tannehill is borderline and has been performing like a top 5 QB for a good amount of time now.
Derwin James has a recurring twitch series where he plays Madden against celebrities. They are not going to strip abilities from one of their current spokesmen.
Good reminder of how marketing plays into their ratings/abilities decisions. Remember also that Tyreek Hill - the most dynamic athlete in the NFL - had 0 abilities in Madden 20 because he got some bad press about an apparent crime he wasn't found guilty of. They can talk about grinding tape and following metrics, but at the end of the day these ratings and abilities are all about marketability and selling more games.

Bro you got me picturing Charles Davis with Chase Claypool's hair right now and it's beyond epic.
I wish it would trigger hurry-up offense for the CPU a lot earlier when they are down multiple possessions. And get rid of code where they will go out of their way to call a timeout at 1:01 left that has seemingly stayed in the game for about a decade now lol

Are you able to equip all of them? I haven’t seen backlash or honorary offensive linemen when trying to add abilities to players.
