Madden NFL 21 Patch 1.12 Available, Updates For Gameplay, Franchise & More - Includes Mouth Guards
While briefly mentioned yesterday, Madden NFL 21 game update 1.12 was released earlier today for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC (Origin/Steam).
Check out the patch notes below, from the latest Gridiron Notes. It includes plenty of gameplay fixes, including improvements in defensive coverage. It also updates some abilities, MUT, franchise mode, along with Face of the Franchise, The Yard and presentation updates.
As spotted by some users in the OS community and not mentioned in the patch notes, mouth guards have been added to many players in the game and orange pants for the Cleveland Browns have been added.
Gameplay Updates
Abilities
- Improved Unstoppable Force to work on User controlled non-engaged defensive moves
- Improved Avalanche ability to work against Ball Carriers using the Cover Ball mechanic
Coverage
- Fixed issue with Coverage assignments incorrectly switching in the Big Nickel formation
- Addressed an issue where when running Nickel 3-3-5 Wide: 1 Sam SS Blitz an Outside Linebacker in Man would inappropriately convert to QB Spy
- Improved Default Zone Drop Coach Adjustment for Flat Zone so Cloud Flats and Hard Flats would play appropriately when on the field at the same time
- Improved Cover 4 Palms Inside Quarter Safety play to better cover #2 Receiver
- Address an issue in Cover 4 where the Quarter Flat player would match routes that he should not have been matching
General Gameplay Improvements
- Fixed an issue causing an opposing player to freeze in the middle of the field sometimes during offense-only practice.
- Fixed the Zone/Man tell where offensive users were able to tell if their opponent were in Zone or Man based on when they could snap the ball
- Addressed an issue with Cornerback Coach Adjustment being set to speed resulting in the Middle Linebacker being lined up at outside Cornerback
- Fixed an issue with the frontside Defensive End being left unblocked when running Singleback: Bunch: Pitch WR Reverse vs Dime: 2-3-6
- Fixed an issue with offensive users not having the ball spotted back 5 yards from the previous line of scrimmage after committing a False Start penalty on a two-point conversion
- Addressed an issue where we were not getting the correct amount of broken stiff-arm tackles to trigger
- Addressed some audio and general stability issues
Madden Ultimate Team Updates
- Fixed an issue where each and every star reward was awarded separately instead of combined
- Fixed an issue where players could not import their normal lineup when creating a Salary Cap Lineup
- Fixed an issue to help balance the amount of XP awarded for Solo Challenges
- Implemented the 80/20 item view when comparing players from the Lineup Screen
- Various UI improvements to increase legibility of text
Franchise Updates
- Face of the Franchise Updates:
- General stability improvements
- Fixed an issue with the Abilities Gift Wrapped, Wrecking Ball, and Brick Wall not unlocking for users
- Fixed players appearing in generic white uniforms during some locker room sequences
- Franchise Updates:
- General stability improvements
- Updated Salaries screen for the “Savings” and “Penalty” columns so they no longer require the user to scroll to the back of the list to view
- Updated Relocation text for St. Louis and Oakland to clarify that users cannot change branding when selecting those cities: Choosing this city keeps existing branding, including uniforms, logo, and nickname. There are no re-brand options in this location.
- Fixed an issue with generated draft class players not getting credit for Downs Played and revealing their development trait
- Decreased the ratings boost for Wide Receivers that receive the Heisman winner draft storyline
The Yard Updates
- Added display of Madden Rep and Cred on The Yard main hub
- Fixed an issue where an Avatar would not stand in the right spot after a teammate disconnected
- Fixed an issue where an Avatar would display a generic name after the user who owns that avatar had disconnected from a game
- Fixed an issue where after readying up, but before transitioning to the draft, in H2H events with a premade squad, users would often see the “Finding Teammate” animation overlaid upon their teammates and empty slots
- General online stability improvements
Presentation Updates
- Bug fixes and Tuning for Audio Stadium SFX in San Francisco and Tampa Bay
- Commentary tuning and color commentary content added for Ravens/Chiefs/Cowboys/Colts/Titans
- Updated Helmet placement on multiple players who switched helmet styles
For those of you looking for bigger franchise mode updates, the first of three scheduled updates are set to arrive in mid-November. You will not be required to restart your franchise, when these updates arrive.
Here’s a list of community requests the team is currently implementing and testing. Keep that in mind, as things could change, the closer we get to release.
- X-Factor/Superstar Ability Customization: This highly requested feature by the community allows commissioners to assign X-Factors to any player via the edit player feature. Once a player has met the criteria to unlock an X-Factor ability, commissioners will be able to edit their player’s Superstar abilities and Superstar X-Factor ability by selecting from those available within his position group. Users will have control over this functionality in both offline and online Franchises.
- Player Card Career Stats UI: A top community request for several years now, the team is revamping the statistics on the player card to include more context in season stats, like week, opponent, and outcome, while also providing what team the player was on for every year of their career.
- Dev Trait Regression Tuning: The team is doing tuning work to player development traits in Franchise mode to ensure a proper balance of Superstar and X-Factor players when progressing multiple years in a Franchise.
- Playoff Bracket: A visual playoff bracket will be added into the game that reflects the new Wild Card format, allowing users to see the full playoff picture.
EA provided some other post-launch Madden NFL 21 franchise mode updateslast month, as well as details on the very early stages for Madden NFL 22 updates for franchise mode.

LOL!! Yeah, this kinda cracked me up. I've never cared about uniform stuff in any game I've ever played - but this would be nice to know.
They've said repeatedly that future franchise mode updates will apply to existing franchises.
Yes, for GB, Jaire, Davante, Savage, Z, Kirksey have them, there may be more, but those do for sure.

one lil annoying thing is when the Qbs still kinda do the reverse spin and then take off to the outside, sometimes they get caught by the end or OLB
i kinda wish they would take off up the middle but ya my team leads the league in sacks by like 12 more then the other team, mainly due to the QB drop back sack bug
i mean ok i have the niners so they have a good DL to but still, I want Zone defense to be fixed so that sounds nice,
would changing the Qbs traits to paranoid and trigger happy make them get rid of the ball sooner ?

Seriously. Everyone going googoo gaga over mouthpieces while gameplay and UI career/per game log issue takes a back seat until who knows when is perplexing.
Or (and try to bear with me here), it's a whole lot easier to spot and comment on a visual aspect of the game than it is to make sweeping judgements on gameplay within a couple hours of the patch being out. :waytogo:

To you and me, absolutely, but to many others, every two or three months it's been a hot request for several years around here.
And when they notice The Yard get's them before CFM, you bet you will here more noise.
I haven't been able to play with the new title update, yet because of time constraints. I'll try later on Sunday.

I mean I wouldn't say they mean nothing to Madden. People want the players to look like the real deal & be authentic. It's no different from the same ppl saying they want authentic gameplay that they see on the field on Sundays. It might not be worth anything to you personally which I can get.
Unless I'm wrong, I see no option...so will rookies just be random...or not have them at all.
Existing online franchise here..... not seeing an option to toggle them on/off, which is slightly concerning as I have a mouthpiece glitching through half of one of my players mouth right now. I looked around the league and do not notice any rookies that have a mouthpiece.

Lost to the Bengals 34-15 but I threw 4 picks so that was all on me. I had the lead 13-10 at halftime. Mixon killed me for 144 yards and 3TD's, which was nice to see.
Receiver drops seem perfect, at least for this game, 5 total. My QB Herbert was 60% and Burrow 70%.

I meant like future years in franchise. Like incoming draft classes. I really didn't specify in my initial post (my fault) if we don't have the ability to add them to the players.
But I think it's awesome that the people who do care are getting something they've been asking for for years, and think it's entirely appropriate that they're excitedly talking about it.
I mean...we're not being charged by the post for storage around here, right? I just don't understand why somebody would feel the need to dump on someone else's excitement.

yeah real life they've always been burgundy with gold lettering. I believe those google photos are from designs when they first announced them dropping the nickname Redskins. it was a quick temporary mockup, but I do not believe they were ever actually painted gold. since week 1 of the season they were burgundy in real life, and Madden has still yet to notice. also noticed in the yard (which I never have played once) you can choose Washington helmet for your player, yet it has a grey facemask...
Yep. This is one of the reasons I always though OS forums were better than Madden forums. I got tired of seeing 100 threads of people getting truly ticked over stupid stuff. Because yeah... when the MLB runs step for step with my 99 WR I’m going to marvel at mouth pieces.

I mean it's only been out like 8 hrs. I would rather read with a larger sample size tbh & avoid the placebo. Knee jerk reactions is usually what I read after every update in the first day or two.
If only there were a large, visible, vocal, revenue-generating community to help keep EA focused on on-field, gameplay-related and balance-related issues and improvements. Like a competitive community, for example....
The QB Pocket zombie is still there, Brady just continued to back up until I sacked him. Only happened once though, hopefully it’s at least reduced. Zone issues are still there, upfield blocking AI issues are still present too. Feels better to me than the last update but again, 2 games so too early to tell

I'm still on my 2nd game, so my sample size is even smaller, but I immediately noticed improved sideline interactions as well.
It's not universal....guys still head OOB more frequently than I'd like...but it's definitely there.
Let people be happy about it.
The other thing is a ton of dropped passes as my receivers catch the ball and get tackled. It's not the issues from few patches ago....just a ton of strips as I catch the ball. Looks great and I was loving it in the 1st quarter as I was able to do the same to the CPU receivers which greatly helps with the QB completion percentage. But by the 4th quarter I had it happen to me at 8-9 times....and I only was able to do the same to the CPU 2-3 times. It seemed over the top. I hope this is an anomaly. I played a game just yesterday with the same teams and i didn't see anything like this.
On the bright side the CPU ran on me pretty darn good for All Pro. I might have to actually adjust for this but I'd rather have the running game of the CPU be too good.
More to come. Any similar findings?

Didn’t see dropback sacks but Trubisky will run. Still had 5 I think. 1 good thing. Cohen ran for over 100 against me. I struggled to move the ball.
Mack did nothing. Only 1 game but in keeping with what I’ve noticed this year SS D ends don’t get the push they got last year. Even when in the zone.
Was glad I struggled. Pretty good game. For just 1 game nothing crazy I saw

One weird thing I've noticed is playaction is resulting in more sacks. Defenders seem to ignore the running back 95% of the time and it's an instant sack.
CPU runners seem to be able to hit a hole a lot better. CPU teams just need to do a better job of being more balanced running and passing this year.
This is all on default all pro as well.

Yea i been asking about the uniform updates like forever yes i can restart my franchise even though they say you dont have to i will because the roster at that time ssucked lol.. Thanks for the ino i would of eventually checked it lol thats the first thing i do when i get the game rather the trial first update all the uniforms and edit all the classics

I'm on PS4 and have this problem. Game won't load. I went offline and it starts, but when I go online it just hangs and I can't get into any mode.

IMO there does need to be an increase in the insta win rate in the pass rush of about 20%. The amount of coverage sacks seem to be right, but guys need to get just flat out beat a couple more times a game.
Those insta hurries would tick the completion percentage down to where it needs to be. Folks are saying that reducing pass blocking sliders doesn't do anything but I'll try it for myself when I get to season 2.
One small thing that bothered me was when the CPU called a fake FG and although I called a FG defense, the Tackle eligible who caught the pass for the first down got open because he ran his route like he was Davante Adams, he should have been lumbering a lot more than he was.
Other than those things, the Update seems really good. Coverage is tighter in zone and man when the ratings are favorable. The running is tougher, but still in a good place. Ratings and playcalling are huge, as they should be.
Wide open and contested drops seem well balanced, so does on the ball and off the ball injuries.
I lost the last game 30-20 to the Seahawks and it might be the best game the CPU has ever played against me. I've been destroyed by a much bigger margin in many games in the past of course, but the way I lost was so great. Neither team had a turnover, so it came down to handful of plays, and Seattle having better Linebackers, a better RB, and Russell Wilson's scrambling ability and flawless decision making made just 2-3 more plays than me late in the game to get the win.
I haven't played against Mahomes yet, but AM CPU Russell Wilson is a perfect replica and shows that they can get the CPU QB AI exactly right, so they need to make sure that they fix what is causing some folks to see the drop back and get sacked bug.

Disappointed it’s not better but certainly $50 worth of entertainment for me.

I just played Mahomes and held him to 28 points as 7 of their 35 was a pick-6. I cringe when I play against a mobile QB and he was everywhere. I had to spy him most of the game and even then he ran a few 10+ yard runs on me. Bosa did get a couple of sacks though and we had 3 total so I consider that part a win.
The diversity of players and teams this year is fantastic.
I would guess that they are assigned to players like arm colors and could be assigned to anyone you want by changing the assignment in frosty like I did tattoos.
Why I'm guessing they didnt offer the ability to assign at will for everyone is because there is most definitely clipping issues with the model and they would need to test every player and do slight tweaks to the positioning on a player to player basis. If you ever tried to give certain players headbands that dont normally have one in nba 2k PC you would know what I mean.
I believe the guy that said the option will probably be added later once they are sure there arent any issues with clipping. That's a massive job.
This community falling apart is just a microcosm of how the country is. Just divisive. You hate to make everything political, but it’s hard not to see the parallel. People can’t even unite on a video game. This community started to do this five years ago and it’s got worse. Can’t be a coincidence.

I downloaded it on my Xbox One via my EA Play account on there. I have the full ten hours available and it won't let me enter the game. So there's something going on but in my case it isn't because my time limit has expired.

I'm gonna bite. People kill me with these post. If it really doesn't matter then lets just put long sleeves and dreads on everyone and assign everyone the same number. Who cares how they look ? This isn't Barbie dress up right ? The only thing that matters is gameplay. So what if Tom Brady is black in the game. Does he play like him ? That's all that matters right ? Who cares about authenticity.

In actuality my man this is a great community and while indicative of today’s times it for the most part is constructive and provides great information. There are some good dudes here and that shouldn’t be lost or construed with those who disagree with others opinions. The biggest problem is the few who literally taken someone’s perspective of the game personal and derail threads. We shouldn’t want or encourage anyone to have the same opinion especially about a video game that’s what makes the world go around. But much like today’s time if a person doesn’t see something through another’s lens it’s divisive. Nah the divisive ones are the ones who can’t accept another’s opinion of the game good and bad and there are plenty of examples of posters and mods who do this without pointing fingers. That’s the divisiveness. Again if we all learn to respect an opinion and see that we all don’t have the same perspective this site would be even better.Momba Out!!! We all get frustrated with the game ...we pay good money ...but for me this is my sounding board (try not to whine too much) it is a pastime for some and a hobbie for others...For some it’s life or death..(lol)
It's tied to post count. Not exactly sure what the first number is to get to the next level but it's either 500 posts or 1000. I wouldn't worry much about it, no one cares about one's title.
Overall hasn't worked in about 5 years and also isn't something that anyone cares about. I wouldn't worry about it much.

Like I said, I'm just experimenting so I don't really know what to expect from this. Along with the 25 accuracy, had pass coverage down at 30 and WR catching at 40 (catching is more of a set in stone thing as I like that more breakups and contested "drops" happen). All else default, and I'm not doing any of the trait/rating editing stuff. And it was in connected franchise, not play now. All sliders matched for both human and CPU, if it matters.
Like others, I don't see the CPU take many (if any) deep shots with the accuracy under 50 so seeing that was quite a shock.

I've been seeing a good variety of calls (holding, DPIs, FMs, offsides, false starts, RTPs, the whole gamut)...on default penalty settings. I'll say this...I've seen a LOT more since I bumped fatigue up to 53.

I owe a lot of my sports gaming enjoyment from the people here at OS, mostly on the MLB The Show side. That said, I think you nailed it here, edaddy, differing opinions are met with such disdain where people become easily offended. While I have not agreed with the direction of the football titles in the last 5'ish years, I am happy that others are getting some of the items crossed off on their wishlists.
The best piece of advice I ever got was to not try winning trivial arguments. Just nod and move on. I got into some heated and ultimately dumb arguments back in the day here at OS, and I hope the newcomers can learn that not every piece of news is about them. Ultimately being constructive leads to better results in the end.

Thanks for sharing bcruise. Are you seeing the QB drop back/sack issue with your set up? I’ve been thinking of dropping human pass cov to 30 and leaving it at that. Thinking maybe solving the QB drop back issue is as simple as loosening up hum coverage on the cpu a touch. I know I know. It’s Madden and it’s never that simple. :)

The next week, Brady only might get dropped 1 or 2 times. and none of those numbers are really out of the realm of believability, so I'm hesitant to start twisting knobs to try and fix a problem which, in the end, might be nothing more than the players' ratings playing themselves out. Sacks might be a little high in my games on average (mostly because there's rarely one where there are none at all) but although it may look bad on the field when they happen, the stats aren't that far off.

When I see that happening.....I pull off my pass rusher I am controlling.....the CPU teammates....welp...can't do anything about that. It happens rarely (I se it once a game typically rarely two times for me). But it stinks we have this QB AI issue.....again.
I bust my you know what on defense (it’s hard as hell imo) and when that “glitch” happens, eight times out of ten it’s exactly what should have happened given the flow of the game, except maybe the game is throwing you an extra five or eight yards on the loss. So it’s 3rd and 22 instead of 3rd and 14. Like who cares.
And the reason I mention it at all is because I find there is an underlying tendency for this community to not like it when good things happen to them in the game. I bust my you know what on defense (it’s hard as hell imo) and when that “glitch” happens, eight times out of ten it’s exactly what should have happened given the flow of the game, except maybe the game is throwing you an extra five or eight yards on the loss. So it’s 3rd and 22 instead of 3rd and 14. Like who cares.
And the reason I mention it at all is because I find there is an underlying tendency for this community to not like it when good things happen to them in the game. Eh it just kinda invalidates actually playing good defense and earning a sack for me. Feels like a bailout rather than a reward.
Also it’s not really “exactly what should have happened” bc any half decent an will throw the ball away or run for yards instead of continuing to drop back.

I KINDA agree with you here. It's restricted to Field General and Strong Arm Archetypes (irrespective of traits) and it will trigger when coverage is too good. It'll happen a couple times a game (more vs guys like Rivers - who is just awful) and it is what it is.
The ISSUE is a much broader one - coverage (particularly on deep vertical routes) is too tight on this game (and it's gotten "worse" as more coverage issues have gotten fixed). A +1 or +2 speed difference in a matchup just doesn't equate to much, so receivers are blanketed to the point where you have to force a pinpoint throw. The CPU will just not attempt them often enough (and I'm not just talking about bombs). It's the reason why the CPU will take those quick routes much more readily vs letting plays develop more. On the occasions where a play DOES open up, it's usually due to a massive mis-match (LB on speed guy) or, more frequently, due to a route running "win".
Field General/Strong Arm archetypes are not programmed to take off often enough (like scrambling/improviser archetypes). So, when guys are blanketed, they "spaz-out" until receivers come back to the QB and open up physical separation from the defender that way. Right now, the only real solution is to manually edit QB ratings to turn them into scramblers/improvisers (and I'm sorry - editing a guy like Brady into a scrambler - that's unacceptable, no matter what the gameplay impact might be). Slider edits can mitigate the frequency, but it WILL still happen.
I've taken the approach of "it is what it is" for the time being. I've got the game playing a challenging enough brand of football that they can overcome this issue when it does happen....at the end of the day, it's final score that matters.
