.... aaaand there is NO Real Time 5 man Hugh!
Goal, old celeb (teammates skate away) cut, then there is an 5 man Hugh scene.....
Hope that is NOT in the final Game!

Yup, that same awful celebration I've never seen anyone actually do. Can we please have the celebrations from 04 back? How many more years of this horrible celebration?
Well, the skating does look like it should be more responsive, but other than that...
Based on the 2nd video, which is user vs cpu on semi-pro/traditional:
It's hard to believe the A.I. has been greatly improved. They do seem a little more stable, but I saw them move out of position when they had numbers, and have difficulty skating towards the corner to retrieve the puck.
They may be better at regrouping as they seem to use more of the neutral zone, but it's hard to say.
Gap control seems about the same, maybe a little better. It could have something to do with the difficulty setting, but it really hasn't mattered that much in the past, so who knows.
Same boring opening scenes, same boring cut scenes. I'm already sick of the commentary.
And it looks like the same tired generic faces we all know and love. How does The Show do it? They don't scan everyone's face.
Oh and a new sound track that sounds just as muzak-ish as the previous ones.
It's going to be a tough sell for offline. The new skating and the fact I haven't played much NHL in the past few years puts me on the fence, but I don't know. It could be another year of legacy issues and who knows what else.
Well the graphics look better anyway.
I like how the goalie makes a ridiculous, highlight reel save in the first video and the commentary doesn't even notice LOL.
Well, this was a bit disappointing... Im exclusively an offline player and while skating and some AI looked OK. It is indeed the same old. No 5 man celebration looks very odd, it actually seems like they took some off lol :D players look bored, faces look like zombies again especially refs.
Puck collection at boards seems more responsive. There seems to be a huge lack of board play though, IRL there is a lot of pinning/fighting for puck.

This is bigger than people realize. EA continues to fail at capturing the overall excitement of an NHL game or the moments in a game that should be amped up. Scoring a goal in game 7 of the season looks, feels, and sounds the same as when you score the go ahead goal in the final minute of game 7 of the Cup......yawn...
Really wish they would redo the commentary. Doc Emrick sounds entirely different when calling a game in real life. He sounds overly scripted in this series and doesn't add any excitement or dramatics.

No it doesn't. The crowd is louder and the camera has that little shaking effect meant to give a feel of excitement which I feel it does very well. It feels different.
I too, however, think the commentary is pretty lame and I'm not sure how they've recorded 1000 new lines and yet I really don't hear anything different.
I really don't know how you guys can't give them legitimate props on the celebrations!!!
They look 20 times better than what we're used to seeing for the last several years.
Such huge improvement in that area that I'll definitely buy it even if the rest of it looks and sounds pretty much the same. Especially on Torontos 2nd goal. Adds so much more personality and immersion to the game.
I'm losing interest in some of the opinions around here because there seems to be no fairness, it's bordering on trolling honestly.
Well, I just watched 3 full-game of footage...and honestly, I'm worried to the point that I might skip this year's iteration of what used to be a sure buy for me since 94. At least, I'm not getting it on launch day, that's for sure. I'll wait for more reviews on the final built.
It's a shame, cause I REALLY wanted to like this game, and was super pumped reading about it until the in-game footage started to appear over Youtube. But after watching...it just feels the same. And I'm at a point where 'the same' just isn't good enough.
Skatting looks better than it did in previous years, but it also makes it look like players are skatting full speed even when they aren't. Presentation is the same, aside from team celebrations (which I personally never really cared about that much).
But I still see the same old thing that I hate about this game: poor positional play, especially on defense...but even when entering the zone offensively. Every team and player plays and feel the same, no identity what-so-ever. Goalies' AI seems dumb again (and I've already seen way too many money goals to be excited).
On the bright side, menus (if those are even the final built ones) seems quicker and more responsive. But that's about it.
I'm also worried about the 'Fog of war'. Just like players morale, it's an idea that looks good on paper, but I'm worried about the effect it will have, especially on the trading AI. And since I'm mostly an offline Franchise guy, can't see that as good news yet.
Goalies equipments are still generic (masks), so are the head coaches I assume. Seriously, and I'm no EA-basher...but this franchise is a couple of years behind where it should be by now. I understand the limitations and challenge the dev team has to deal with compared to bigger franchise like Madden and FIFA...but as a customer, I also don't get why I should be paying the same price for a game that clearly doesn't get as much love as the other franchises from EA.
I wanted to fall in love with the game by watching the first clips. And now, I'm left hoping that 2K will eventually realize that there's a huge opening for them to bring a fresh vision on a great sport for video games.
I'll still keep an open mind, and follow the launch closely. But man, I'm crushed right now.
    ...I really am.

The game sounds terrible IMO. Not even close of a real NHL game atmosphere. The crowd sounds like they are watching a practice until there is a shot. A home player will skate with the puck until he reaches the crease alone and the crowd won't react to this golden opportunity. Basically they only react to shots and hits. The commentary is just bad but I understand that it may never be good until we get an incredibly realistic text-to-speech software so programmers can actually code what is said.
Color me unimpressed. Am I the only one that thinks the game plays and looks the same as NHL 18?? no player differentiation. All the players skate, shoot and pass the same. Body type looks the same. The game plays way too fast. It's like a pinball machine out there! and what's with the boomerang sound on slapshots??
When will EA learn? I think I'll be cancelling my pre-order again this season.
We need 2K to bring back their hockey game for crying out loud! Just look at what they have done with their NBA 2K series.
Well, honestly it kinda reminds me the problem the old 2k11 game had with most of the animations running at ridiculous speed, that I'm fixing these days Lol Still not really sure how I feel about that in the new game from EA.
It looks like there is just one hyper speed for everything now. No acceleration, no momentum, just running around like mad. I don't see any subtle nuances of skating or contacts between the skaters. A passing looks like there is a very strong magnet in the puck or something. Hmm, so is this really the improvement from a sim perspective?
I have been playing the beta for the past 3 days and will say skating is alot better.  I'm glad you can't spam poke check but they need to turn down the tripping in the game. NHL guys get hit in the legs all the time but they don't fall down. EA still has no clue what charging or boarding is. Seen one charging and one boarding.  NHL doesn't have this much open ice hitting sorry EA.  Have not seen one interference call . Speed of dekes is still way to slow.  Why does my guys legs stop moving while just moving puck back and forth with right stick . Guess these guys have to stop walking when they chew bubblegum also. Imbalance in CPU AI.  Forward AIs are 10 times better then a CPU AI defenseman. Just make AI dumb for both teams. Still same dumb CPU d skating into his goalie with the puck. Lost a game in OT on a double
Shot. Guy shot it goalie saved it puck bounced forward and hit skater and bounced in
    On Improving A.I. Behavior
"This year was more of a consolidation and quality of life year. We've taken a lot of the feedback from the community and really focused on how we could take the existing A.I. and polish the heck out of it. A lot of the pain points, a lot of the things that players have noticed, particularly with goalie A.I. and player positioning. We've done a lot of polish there. With player switching, this is not "A.I." but there is logic there that affects your ability to play. We've done a lot of internal user testing on that to see how we could improve that. And for people who really want, "I need the left wing right now" or "I want a right defensemen" you can just hold down the right trigger and use the right stick to select the player you want. That sidesteps any edge cases in our logic."

This caught my eye.. but only time will tell if this is a honest answer or just talk.

Whoa... Directional player switching? Finally! Always wanted to grab a forward on the back check to support the D. No more choosing between not switching or taking D-man and having no back pressure.

New Commentary. Where??? This is possibly the weakest year on year iteration upgrade. I kept watching the video thinking at which point will this not feel like NHL 18. Then reading the interview it quickly becomes apparent it is NHL 18.....with a bit of a patch.
If a game franchise is out there screaming for competition then this is it!

Yes, this should be very useful.
Not seeing much new here. I think the 5 guy celebration is worst now than it was before hopefully they are toying with us and this is not the final version. It does seem like their legs are moving more than floating so hopefully more polish coming to everything.

The 5 man celebration needs to be a custom one where you press Y and it happens real time. That would be much better than how it is now IMO.
While the skating definitely looks better, the AI is still looking just as comically bad as ever on defense and offense. They still clump up like a JV Soccer team, and on defense they're just aimlessly skating still. Everyone's skating towards the puck carrier, but there doesn't seem to be any pickup up open players or using poke checks. It still looks like the AI is intent on skating at the player with the puck for a body check instead of using their sticks to close off space and disrupt the play.
Until I see actual change from EA on the AI front, I just can't see myself getting back into the game again. It looks the exact same in terms of how the AI moves and plays as it has for the past few years. As good as the skating looks, the defensive and offensive AI on both teams is still tough to watch.
Well I called it. I said it would be 15-18 w a few slaps of lipstick and gimmicks. EA is sucking. I’m just waiting for reviews of madden . Bring back 2K nfl and Nhl. Please
Thats some wishful thinking :) .. dont want to go OT here but watching NFL2k5 after seeing the jerky/disconnected animations in Madden just makes me smh, the game is basically 15 years old and still much better as a game.
It does looks the same. Like everyone I noticed skating looks different (in a good way) but nothing else seems to change. I used to buy the game every year. That have stopped the past 2-3 years. Last year I actually bought the game but got bored of it quickly. If it is like that as the final product, looks like I may pass on it this year.

You didn't notice how much easier it is to pick up pucks?
The player jostling battles for the puck?
    The tripping penalties?
    The player traits?
The game moving faster because of the skating?
    AI players actually taking penalties?
Passing not being as accurate when powering it up all the way?
Deflections being more a part of the game?

Ok this is a bit better gameplay, and the rest of the game ? Same like allways. Gameplay is something, but not all which is necessary for a good game.

You just summed up the majority of sports titles year after year. But the others have a bit more fluff than NHL.

I kind of wish they would just go back to pre-rendered cutscenes. Outside of MLB The Show & maybe NBA 2K, no sports game has really mastered the real time presentation aspect of the game.

I like the way FIFA does it. There's the pre-defined cutscene that you kind of move your way into. You can select your celebration, and you see it from the same angle as your gameplay so that part is relatively seamless, and then it cuts in and you're celebrating with teammates.

I noticed all those things and it gives me hope but we didn’t get to play a game vs the CPU like us offliners do. I’m skeptical that even with all the good stuff you mentioned it will be enough to get past the horrible AI.....manly teammate AI. I hope I’m wrong but EA doesn’t care about us offline Season, Franchise, or be a pro guys anymore.
