NBA 2K18 MyTEAM Trailer and Details with 2 New Modes - Draft Mode & Super Max

2K has just released a new NBA 2K18 MyTEAM trailer, along with Developer blog, featuring two brand new modes, Pack & Playoffs (pack draft mode) and Super Max (salary cap and season gameplay to online competition).

MyTEAM 2K18 Dev Blog Associate Producer Peter Cornforth

Wow, its already time to start talking about MyTEAM again. While you were watching last year’s NBA season and playing NBA 2K17 we were hard at work building amazing new features for our upcoming NBA 2K18 MyTEAM mode. There are a ton of new features and content coming this year but I want to start with two all-new game modes we will be adding.

Pack and Playoffs

We knew coming into this year that we wanted to add a draft mode to MyTEAM. It’s something that we’ve been thinking about for quite a while so when we got started designing the mode we had all kinds of ideas from table-top and collectable card games, fantasy sports, and video games. We wanted to borrow the best design elements from each of these and use the framework of MyTEAM 2K18 to create a draft mode experience that is truly unique.
For us, the fun of a pack draft is the excitement of building the best team possible with what you are given. Sometimes the universe throws you all-around superstars and sometimes it throws you role-players and unproven rookies. Those who can adapt to a new play style and change it up based on the cards they are given will thrive even when luck is not on their side. Pack and Playoffs is a new lineup and a new experience every round.
This year in MyTEAM coaches matter more than ever before. All of our modes will use our new system proficiency tech that optimizes teams based on eight different systems. The first thing you will do is open a coach pack and pick a coach for your team. The coach you pick will determine what system your team will run. As you fill in your lineup you’ll want to look for players who are a good fit for the coaches preferred system so that your team runs as efficiently as possible on the floor. Watch for O.G.’s Defensive blog coming soon for all of the details on the new coaching system proficiency tech.
Next, you will continue to fill out your team by opening packs and picking players. You have five player position slots to fill and each choice you makes affects your team’s system proficiency. Once you pick your 5 player squad and make any position swaps you need you’ll be ready to roll.
You will compete in 5 on 5 games against other drafted teams through four rounds of playoffs leading up to the Finals. Each round in the tournament is a best-of-seven elimination. Win four games and advance, lose four and you’re bumped. Each time you advance you will redraft a whole new lineup or you can use VC to hold onto players that are working for you and re-draft the ones who aren’t.
Not only did we bring back the prize boards from MyTEAM Blacktop we added new exclusive players you can’t get anywhere else. There are also special cards that you can pull that will give you an edge on your competition. In addition to that we’ve also added a prize ladder. The further you advance before being eliminated the bigger the prize you can earn. There is even a grand prize for the Finals Champion. The best part is you can draft your team and play all you want for free.

Super Max

The other big change we wanted to make was to our other online play mode. We wanted to create a place where players of all skill levels could come to compete online and take on the world. What we came up with we’re calling MyTEAM Super Max.
Super Max adds salary cap and season gameplay to online competition to create an experience that stays fun, fresh, and competitive all year. Each time a new round starts the salary cap will be updated and you will build the best team possible with cards from your collection under the salary cap.
Here’s the best part. We’ve built a system that adjusts individual card’s cap values based on how often they are used. If everyone is using the same card then the cap value of that card will increase. Some cards could be so popular that their value increases to “Super Max” levels. You will need to think carefully, balance your super stars with role-players, and seek out hidden gems that others may have missed.
Super Max will be a full length 13-man roster online game. To start you will compete in placement matches against random opponents to gauge your skill. Based on your performance you will be placed into a league with others at your skill level. That means whether you are a MyTEAM legend or it’s your first time stepping onto the court every matchup will be fun and competitive.
As you play matches and win games you can claw your way up through the leagues earning prizes at the culmination of each round. Grand prizes will be awarded for your combined performance in each round at the end of every season. Be careful though, you can also lose points for a loss. In Super Max every game matters so show up ready to play.

Coaches

We’ve added a new card type this year called Strategy Cards. Strategy Cards can be played during timeouts and add temporary bonuses to your point of emphasis for a short amount of time. When you are in a tight situation you can call a time out, set your P.O.E., burn a strategy card, and go light your opponent up on the floor.
Coaches also have gem level colors and rarity from Bronze all the way to Diamond this year. Depending on the level of your coach you will be able to bring more Strategy Cards into each game and get a bigger boost multiplier when you burn them.

Schedules

For those of you that wanted more offline content this year we definitely have you covered there too. This year we are adding Schedule Challenges to our challenge mode. You will play through a 30 game schedule for each of the 30 NBA teams. Earn MyTEAM Points and prizes as you work your way through 900 unique challenges based on the 2017-18 NBA season schedule. These will all be available day one.

All-Time Domination

But wait, that’s not all. For all of you maniacs who can dominate every NBA team and every Historic NBA team we have even more offline content. 33 All-time lineups comprised of the best players in each franchises history. Kobe, Shaq, Magic, Jerry, Kareem, Wilt…talk about a super-team.

Auction house

This year we’ve made some updates to the auction house as well. We’ve made our auction house real-time so you will now see your auctions up just moments after you post them.
We’ve also added reserve bidding. Now you will be able to set a maximum bid price you’re willing to spend and we will incrementally increase your bid to keep you in the lead until your reserve price is reached.
Also, new to the auction house this year are stacks. You can now sell stacks of 20 consumable items like shoes, badges, and contracts rather than posting each one individually.

MyTEAM Goals

This year you will unlock prizes just for exploring and playing the mode. We’ve introduced MyTEAM Goals which will guide you through your entire MyTEAM experience from exploring the menus on your first day all the way through completing each game mode. If you’re ever not sure what to do next just open up your goals menu.

Collections Menu

We’ve added a ton of new cards to the game mode this year and we have even more planned for release later in the year so to help you sort through all of the cards we’ve improved our collections menu. Now you can jump straight to the collection you’re looking for without having to page through every other collection to get there. You will just select the collection and select the team or collection icon and, boom, there you are.

Dynamic Duos

Dynamic Duos are coming back and this year we’re adding even more duos than last year. We’ve also added a quick reference for Dynamic Duos cards that will allow you to quickly look up a Dynamic Duo partner. Just highlight one half of the duo and bring up the Dynamic Duo guide again. As a special bonus the Legend Gold edition will come with not only a Ruby Heat Shaquille O’Neal but will also include a Ruby Heat Dwyane Wade that boost your Shaq to Amethyst level when they share the floor!

Other awesome stuff

This year you’ll be able to replace badges you apply to a card. If you decide you want to make a change you can now replace any of the custom badges you’ve already added with a new one.
Shoes can now have up to 5 attribute boosts. We’ve added hundreds of new shoes and colorways each with a unique combination of boosts.
We’ve upgraded our main menu to include progress tracking for all of our play modes all in one place. You will be able to check out your next Domination match-up, your challenge tokens, and see when the next MyTEAM Super Max round starts all in one dashboard view right on the main menu each time you enter the mode.

…and so much more awesome to come.

Those of you who have played MyTEAM before know that launch day isn’t the end of our content it’s just the tip-off. This year will be no different. Stay tuned to our social media channels to stay up to date with new pack releases, promos, events, challenges and more.
NBA 2K18 MyTEAM mode is adding so many new features, new game modes, and new content it’s shaping up to be the biggest MyTEAM we’ve ever done. Launch day is right around the corner so I need to go back to helping the most talented and dedicated team of artists, producers, and engineers I have ever worked with finish up all of the final touches that will make this the best MyTEAM experience ever.

  1. So for myTeam they "Added new exclusive players that you cant get anywhere else".
After announcing alltime teams and more classic teams i really thought people who don't play myTeam or are roster creators finally got full access to all the players that are somewhere in the game.
    Guess i was wrong.
Those new teams are awesome, but curious to see which player we are missing.
As far as myteam goes, which i dont really play much, this blog sounds nice. Maybe i will try it out more this year
I don't play My Team but the after reading the blog it sounds pretty cool for those that play it.
On a side note I used to be a little annoyed with Ronnie2K and LD2K but after signing up for and getting on Twitter and seeing the ridiculous abuse they take on there from fans and even from some players acting like jerks I have a new found respect for those two.

I'd guess that there are still players in MyTeam that aren't available in the other modes, but I think the line you're referring to was specifically for prizes; I think they were saying that some of the players you can get as prizes in their new Draft mode can't be pulled out of regular packs and stuff.
The two new modes sound really awesome. Sounds like they pretty much replicated Draft Champions from Madden, which is a great move, and added a Salary Cap mode which I've been hoping for for awhile now. I'm so tired of playing MyTeam in 2K17 and facing a squad where their 12th man is a 95 overall.
    Yeah...THAT Guy

    Oh, yeah.
    I might got it wrong.
    Confirmation would be nice anyway.
    "33 All-time lineups"
...where do the other 3 come from? Do teams like the Lakers and Celtics get extra lineups? Is there all-time Eastern, Western, and Team USA lineups too?
I've been turned off by myteam's mutant superpowered versions of actual players but if we're getting capped leagues I might find that fun.
They made a bandaid fix for the biggest problem in myteam. The power creep as new cards get introduced. The biggest problem with end game 2k17 MyTeam is that people have all these players that are like 90+ in all their ratings (Hakeem with like a 90 3pt for example) and all the people that paid money for their cards have stacked teams with unobtainable cards.
The supermax concept acts like a bandaid because now at the very least, those popular end game cards (Kareem, Hakeem, Westbrook, Kevin Durant etc) would now have a super max status and not be allowed to all be on the same team.
What needs to happen to completely fix the problem is to stop overrating throwback players by making them great at everything. Just because Wes Unseld hit 2 3's in a game before doesn't mean he should be released with an 88 3pt rating

The biggest problem isn't throwback cards, it's the moments cards. One guy has a fluke shooting night or runs it up against an awful defense and all of a sudden his stats go through the roof in his next card.
This is literally everything I've asked for and more, man. As a company they've really paid attention. Some of these things sound directly plucked from threads I've made on this website and while I obviously have no way of confirming I was the influence of these issues or if it's just a "Great minds think alike" scenario, I still feel amazing that they are in game. I can't wait to get this game in my hands, man.

Both are awful concepts. I was hoping they'd make moments cards be free agent cards you need to keep buying to use so that way we don't have to suffer through playing against those versions of players.
The alternative would be to go back to the dynamic cards that had their ratings change based on real life play week to week. No more super overrated cards that last the length of the game's life

I think in 2K17 where everyone ran 5 out, it just wasn't feasible to release cards that couldn't shoot late in the year, because the 3-ball was the most viable option. It's hard to drop a valuable Kareem at the end of the year when so many bigs can do most of what he does, & shoot.
I think not only will the "Super max" fix this but so will shooting updates & coaching systems. If you can get a boost to post play by using a certain coach then Hakeem's value drives way up without needing a 3-ball. These coaching boosts will allow more diverse player types to thrive in this mode. If I get a defensive boost, maybe I feel comfortable running a TBT Tony Allen.
One thing they can not do is have some crazy combos that allow boosts to shooting. I can already see people running Steph+Klay+KD duos, coached by Kerr, with shoe boosts and badges, and turning their whole team into 99 OVR shooters. That's one thing I do not want to see at all.
I'm pleasantly surprised and very excited for the Super Max and offline team season modes. I do wonder if Super Max is replacing the old "season" mode or if it is in addition. But it's going to be nice to be able to actually construct a team of my liking rather than to just throw out all of my most highly rated players and hope that my opponent hasn't spent thousands of dollars on packs.

Thats the problem though, people will always use the easiest method of scoring to play. Post play is way harder than calling 5 out and using a PnR until the other team's AI runs away from a 3pt shooter and he gets an open shot. Hakeem was already an amazingly rated post player yet barely anyone I've faced used him like one.
I think they just wanted to have the people still playing to have an incentive for getting the new cards (people buying packs and giving 2k money) so as the year went along they had to keep on overrating newer cards to make people want to update their lineups.
You can't release the Wes Unseld card with a mediocre 3pt rating and expect people other than Unseld fans to try to get him when Moments Cousins is 85+ in all offensive ratings and is better than Unseld in almost everything. So now Unseld is released with an 88 3pt rating and is a jack of all trades so people have the incentive to upgrade.
Did they steal Draft Champions from Madden lol? If so, that's going to be super nice. I'll play that.
That'll give me the opportunity to play w/ players like '06 Kobe and others without having to grind or pay for players if it's like Draft Champions. That's a good move.

I wasn't initially feeling the card design, but it's growing on me. In an attempt to make my self like it, I realized the Pierce Ruby is listed as 1 of 10,000.
You guys think this is a confirmation of locker codes still not being timed. This Pierce coming from a limited challenge? Maybe certain cards will have an autographed version that has boosts? I think it's the last option because every other throwback card has that striped ribbon, while Pierce doesn't.
That video was absolutely cringeworthy. "Lit...LIT!!!!!"
Anyway, everything sounds good. Been waiting for Draft champions for a while, so i'm glad they have it. I also hope they have regular MTO like in 2K17. I actually enjoyed going up against stacked squads much better than mine. I really enjoy the challenge.
They also mentioned something about being able to play boosts at the end of matches in game. The hell? That sounds terrible.
Draft mode is a huuuuge add. Draft Champions in Madden is amazing, if this is half as good we're in for a treat.
The rest of this sounds good, hopefully All-Time Domination isn't completely impossible, wonder what the rewards are for each level.
Reserve in AH is a nice touch.
Still not really a fan of the way they downgrade the base cards (Lonzo is an 80 but his cards is a 75), but oh well. Soon as you rip packs day 1 you have to sell.

I was thinking the same, but also if you've completed both dominations and reached the the point where the All Time teams are truly OP, you should have a pretty decent team by that point.
Also lowered ratings are just the way these modes have to work. It's like that in MUT as well. If 97 OVR LeBron or 96 OVR KD was in the game day 1, what would we work toward all year? The mode would be dead by January.
I don't like how VC had to creep into the draft mode. Using VC to keep a card is cheap and will just reward those willing to pay for VC. Just have a re-draft each time so it's more about skill and luck of the draw.
Kind of bummed out that they're doing that stupid thing where they lower the players overalls at the beginning of the year again.
There's no point in it when you're just gonna create all these 99, 98 and 97 overall cards that have low intangibles attributes and are just crazy over powered

This is the most unappealing part of MyTeam. I love the mode, but seeing Barkley with a 3-point rating on par with Stephen Curry is so unrealistic. Even if the objective is to capture the "moment" of a specific game, some of the ratings are way over the top.
I don't know much about these features as I don't play anything else than Quick Game and Season. But if Manute Bol's card is there, does it mean that he's in the game?

Not necessarily. He was in MyTeam last year as well. Maybe he'll be on the All Time Wizards team though. Him and Muresan would be a nightmare.

I think some people are more passionate about saying the most ridiculous things because many people are able to see it. This is one of the side effects of the "social media era". You can pretty much say anything and millions will see it.
I wish it was more like here at OS that you have to face consequences, boundries.
Anyway, regardless of any criticism myself and many others here may have, there is a better way to phrase what you want to say. Keep up the good work.
Hey LD2K, can clarify something on the draft mode? Like, we can't just keep paying to keep a dude forever right? Like, at some point they've got to force us to redraft from scratch, and not just keep dudes from previous drafts. Cause if we can just run around building up an all pink-diamond team and just paying a ton of VC to keep em for the entire 2K18, that would really damper the mode

If you happen to win the finals then you go back to starting from round 1 and re draft. Same thing if you get eliminated. Then you hv to redraft your team. You can only continue to keep players as you advance from round 1 to 2 all the way up till the finals.

Either you get beat, or you keep beating.
You don't keep teams playoff to playoff. If you lose 4 games like in the playoffs then you redraft for the next playoff. You can maintain players in that particular playoff run with VC, but let's say you run the table like the 2001 Lakers did, and win in the Finals, then at the end of it, you're redrafting for the next playoff (or if you get knocked out of that run).

    Fair enough.
2K15 Domination was the best imo, you were actually able to get good pulls along the way. Seems like the last 2 years you'd only get those type of cards on the last 3 teams.
A few more tidbits I'm going to drop here...
Shoes matter this year. Be a sneaker head and boost your players. Also when you draft a team in Pack and Playoffs, you do not use contracts. You can use that team for the first round AND YOU DO NOT HAVE TO KEEP IT. You can choose to redraft the whole team. The choice is yours.
I was hoping to see them modify Domination to take the MT requirements out of it. It really goes against everything else they promote in the game, running plays, trying to create good shots etc, when the best way to play ends up being pass into post/fadeaway jumpers or dunks.
It's a bit disheartening and easy to lose interest in the mode when you play good team basketball and beat the opponent, only to have not met the MT requirements and have to play the game again.
I must say I have not been excited for this game all summer. But, this has definitely peaked my interest (the blog did, not trailer lol). After I see some gameplay, and if they truly made changes to it like they said. I'll definitely pick it up just to play MyTeam.

Hey LD, do we gotta use contracts up for domination or at least get rewarded with contracts after each game. How's this gonna work especially with the amount of domination games this year.
Im glad that they added so much more offline content because it only took 1 or 2 months at most for the offline content to not be used or feel stale. Super max is a great new addition also, I know it makes the "budget squad" guys like me smile
So now we cant have god squads. That is very disheartening. I always have a great team and that is the whole point of MyTeam, making the best team possible. Im gonna ne extremely disappointed if Im stuck using budget players all year. I want to have a god squad. The problem in 2K17 was making OP cards with no weaknesses. It gets to a point in the year where every player on the floor can do everything.

Agreed. 2k17 Domination was a lot of trying to get the assist on a post move score. At least they let you know how much MT you have gained so you can adjust how you play.
This is going to sound silly but in years of playing myteam I have never equipped sneakers on anyone. "Boosting" players with abilities they should not have ruins the game for me. I'd gladly do it if I didn't have to have the stupid stat boosts.
LD2k I like the new changes and it made me purchase again when I wasn't about to. Can you please confirm if there is an unrestricted mode in Supermax along with the Salary Cap mode? A lot of us would like the option to play our complete best teams also in a competitive mode with rewards for doing well.
I played myteam through the 30 nba teams a couple years ago and it was ok, but I don't see the lasting appeal of this mode.
Hopefully they didn't spend most of their time on that stuff, and spent a lot of time improving gameplay & Franchise Mode.
