MLB The Show 20 Livestream - "Perfect-Perfect" Hitting (Archive Included)

Sony San Diego Studios hosted their second MLB The Show 20 livestream earlier today with Ramone Russell, Luis Martinez, Stephen Haas and Nick Livingston, as they detail the new “Perfect-Perfect” hitting feature, where perfect timing and perfect PCI placement, guarantees peak player performance. They also discuss pitching and other hitting improvements.

Tom Glavine, John Smoltz and Greg Maddux were revealed as Legends in MLB The Show 20.

We will post our recap shortly. Until then, check out the archived stream below, if you missed it and let us know your thoughts!

  1. Perfect perfect DOES NOT GUARANTEE A HIT
It is essentially the hardest that a batter can hit the ball.
Also, if on the right difficulty level, the expectation is that perfect-perfect will happen on 2% of your swings.
so now a shoutout to full minor league rosters...
I'm glad that they didn't tweak hitting very much. It's great that they realized that most of the problems stemmed from fielding problems moreso than the hitting engine and focused their changes there.

So happy that Hicks, Chapman, and others will have authentic velocities.

This is going to be huge honestly. 100 MPH sinker? Goodnight. Will really make these star players stick out.
Over 6 million swings in the Beta, only 2% registered as Perfect perfect swings which resulted in a hit 83% of the time. For those who don't want to do the math that is 120,000 meaning that 5,880,000 times resulted in non-perfect perfect swings.

and will actually make 2-seamers a viable pitch

Yes that cool. Perfect-Perfect....I'm playing Directional ...so not sure if there's a PP with that batting mode, no mention.
Again we'll see a buffet of Legends...but I'm not even login to the DD mode. Not interested to play with tons of 99 Legends anyway, I'm a Franchise guy.
Next week Twitch will give us a good indication of how far deep they're in Online DD stuff again.
This morning twitch was interesting tho.
Even hearing Ramone saying the word franchise brings me some relief. I got to say I was a little disappointed with these two streams.
It's not that I dislike what they are doing, I actually agree a lot with what they are doing, lets just say if it were me I'd have a slightly different focus and implementation.
Biggest surprise for me: new perk to allow certain pitchers to break the 100MPH speed limit (I hope we can add that to created players).
Biggest let down so far for me: Finding out I couldn't reload a throw this year. I get it, but to me if I have time to reload a throw, it's like I have enough time to pat the glove and set myself. THAT I think would have been a fair tradeoff. You can reload a throw, but it's always going to result in a glove pat animation before the throw is made.

They'll be in deep, no doubt about it

Also saw the coke bottle in San Francisco and the Cars sign along the left field fence are both accurate to real life now as well at Oracle Park!

Did it say Coca-Cola on it though, or was it just the bottle. I thought they already had the bottle? It was just generic.

What's the logic behind legends with 99 ratings?
"Now in NBA2K, get a 99-rating Nick Van Exel and 99 rating Jamal Mashburn!! It's super rad, kids!" :waytogo:

Could you please tell me which clip you saw that in? I didn’t catch it and would really like to see lol

It was towards the end when they were showing the customizable pci's using Tim Anderson. It looked as though he was using a Victus bat.
Just saw that a link was provided up above. Thank you Sir.

    It said Coca-Cola.

Unless I'm tripping it definitely said Coca Cola on it

Actually it's still the fake trains sign which has been in the game for a while now. However you are correct about the bottle in left field it now says Coca-Cola instead of the fake Enjoy Cola :)
Runner with a speed of 75 with a ball hit to the wall on a line drive over the 3rd basemen and past the outflielder should be an easy double. I'm sorry this needs to be fixed..
That pci is interesting, unfortunately I can’t use them they totally distract me.
Even though they said perfect-perfect does not guarantee a hit, the non hit is going to be a unicorn compared to the success rate with a .800 avg. In reality what is more important is the low frequency rate which means they have strict tolerances on achieving it which is more important than the result for game balance.
I was hoping they would mention if the CPU could achieve a perfect-perfect result.

Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine, and John Smoltz all in the '20!!!

Slight related question that you might not know. I didn't get 19 and Kerry Wood and Mark Prior were in 19. Will 20 have Wood and Prior?

They tend to retain nearly all their legends year to year. It’s pretty likely that Wood and Prior are going to be in 20, especially with the emphasis on legends from the 90’s and 2000’s this year.

17:26: Ramone draws the parallel to Barrels (though it's not exactly the same), and says they're seeing around the same batting averages as that contact quality produces.
    :waytogo::60:
I'm so happy that they're modeling this in the game.
Also, remember those charts at the end were compiled from predominantly endgame DD hitters (they showed that in a box at the bottom left of one of them) - if anything, perfect-perfect frequency and the hits coming from them is gonna be lower than these numbers when you take normal MLB-talent level players (i.e franchise and other offline play).

I can't say with 100% certainty, but I would be surprised if they were removed.

Did they say what the max speed will be?

No specific mention that max speed is x mph, but they kept mentioning 102 as the top level that Chapman, Hicks, and others were hitting.

Is that only online or are the quirks offline as well?

My understanding is that its for both.

That was user controlled the runner would have made it to second base I think for sure but for some reason who was ever playing sent him back to first.
Now if it was the CPU that did that then I would be upset because MLB The Show 20 CPU will now have more aggressive base runners according to the SDS developer in the first stream today.
We will see how that turns out.
Did they mention anything about more swing and misses? As that was at the route of most of the problems last year. They geared it to try and get realistic batting averages in a game where no one ever struck out, so obviously that meant an awful lot of terrible BABIP.
Great stuff, so interesting to see how they measure everything and compare it to the real MLB stats.
Customizable pci is a very nice touch and the new layout gives you a quick idea of the vision/contact the player has and if its more a contact or a power hitter. Great job.
What I would like to see more of is faul tips in the glove. I think this happens way too little in the game compared to real life.
Oh and last thing, almost every online game I have a hit with my pitcher. Verlander almost went deep twice a few games back. Some of this maybe has to do with the fact people online tend to throw easy fastballs to pitchers and I take advantage but still their succes rate seems a bit off still.

It's just odd to me. It doesn't actually do anything different than a perfect swing any other year?
Damnit man I'm trying to hold off for the ps5. This looking pretty good though. I don't think it's been said enough. Real ads are huge. Seeing the Chik fila cow in Atlanta. The Coke bottle in San Francisco. Delta in NYY. Man those are big parts of the ballpark. I love they got that in.
    New velocities and break
    Real ads
    Better fielding
    Perfect perfect.
    Full minors
Definitely not just a roster update I'm impressed.

also of interest, during the perfect perfect testing, the average overall of the batter was a 96, with an average contact rating of 111 and an average power rating of 97. which would lead me to believe its possible the homerun rate on perfect perfect will be less than the 6% during the beta and even doubles will probably be lower than the 10% during the beta. I figure singles are going to be more than the 12% success during beta testing, once lower power and contact players are totalled in.

If only they’d allow us to just use regular teams for the betas. But that doesn’t help to get the kiddos addicted to the microtransactions.

Down velocity and zero movement, which meant a lot of hits off of him.

Yeah, Chapman’s 104 days are mostly gone. He fastest pitch last year was a little over 102 which is still very good. Hicks can bring the 104 way more frequently. I do believe Chapman still holds the record at 105 mph.

I would rather see him get hit off of instead of watching him put holes in the backstop signs because he can find the strike zone.

Another real ad they showed in the defensive improvement video was Chick-Fil-A in Atlanta.  It’s the small logo, but it was in the outfield on the Acuna catch.

OK, I see what they did. I mean, it's more than just perfect swings. They revamped the entire batting code basically. I wouldn't have called it perfect perfect but whatever.
