MLB The Show 19 Hands-On Preview

I was able to get a quick hands-on with MLB The Show 19 last week. While my time was limited to roughly 30 minutes with the game — at least in terms of hands-on time — I did manage to get in a few questions that you guys asked in the forums, and I got to sink into a little bit of the game. Here’s what I took away from my experience.

Impressions

  • Gameplay: It’s clear from the start that this year’s game plays and looks much smoother than previous versions. Fielding is very fluid, and I did feel in complete control of my actions. Pitching has also been tuned in such a way where it felt like on higher difficulty levels I was really needing to focus. I did not get away with grooving one down the middle, and being complacent on the mound was just not working out for me. Staying on pitching, it seems relatively clear already that you will not be able to consistently fool hitters by just throwing your pitcher’s third or fourth best pitch. If a pitch has a poor rating attached to it, there’s a greater chance of that pitch missing its mark or simply being left over the heart of the plate. I also got to see a few new hit animations, including some new hits up the middle, down the line and even some new “seeing-eye” singles.
  • Presentation: There wasn’t a complete overhaul this year for presentation but it has been polished and does look fresher. Right away, I noticed some new cutscenes and visual angles that enhanced the gaming experience. Hundreds of new animations have been added overall to all areas (i.e. hitting, pitching, fielding and celebrations).
  • New Mode: A new mode has also been added this year called Moments. This new mode allows you to try and relive baseball history. It was fun to see The Show try their hands in creating this mode, and the developers definitely invested time in doing so as Moments is an extremely deep and robust mode with tons of different challenges and difficulty levels. This mode is very very in-depth and should provide hours of game time that can also be added to throughout the season — I know I will be spending hours on it. For more details on Moments, check out the details here.
  • Road To The Show: As always, Road to the Show has been revamped with a new look, and offers more options and control than ever before.

Miscellaneous Notes

  • The Ohtani question: Shohei Ohtani can be used as both a hitter and pitcher. However, just like in real life, he won’t pitch and DH in the same game.
  • As it relates to ball physics, the baseball bouncing over outfield walls has been tuned. The ball will bounce more realistically and differently off of different structures. This has also been discussed in some of the live streams.
  • No new attributes have been added to this year’s game, but all attributes have been tuned and tweaked for more realism.
  • An infielder’s range is more realistic and fielding attributes have much more of an impact this year than in the past. You’ll notice that lesser rated fielders will struggle with getting good jumps on balls and/or taking correct routes to balls.
  • The shallow pop up that would bloop over the middle infielder’s head — the one where you couldn’t take control of your fielder — was not a bug. It was just a ball that realistically the infielder wouldn’t have gotten to in real life, so it was a design decision to have it play out that way.
  • No rainouts or day-night double headers this year, but it is something the development team has been looking into for the future.

  1. So.....no discussion on Franchise because we haven't gotten to that particular Twitch stream, or.......no discussion because there's nothing to discuss, that is the question.

    Probably both.
The Show's franchise has been relatively the same for years now (which is why I haven't bought the game for a few years), but I'm sure they added in a few bells and whistles to make it seem new when it isn't. Probably don't want the limited changes to get exposed this early so they're going to keep it hidden until closer to release.

Because we haven’t gotten to that part of the stream.

Ohtani can be used as a DH and Pitcher confirmed. (However, just like in real life, he won’t pitch and DH in the same game.)

Now the question will be if we can create 2 way players

That was a whole lot of nothing. No franchise info, no park building, no created teams or relocation options. Just the same ish... I am going back to The show 10 where I can at least set my pricing and get real sponsorships and have some overall fun. Can you guys update the show 10 to have quick counts??? LOL

I’m probably alone in wishing we could have real-time presentation back, that was dope.
Everything about what they did with the gameplay sounds PHENOMONAL. I really wasn’t sure where I was with the game after last year but theyve got me back on board. I can’t wait to try this out.
Also I think all the worrying over over the secondary pitches will be put to rest. As long as it’s actually implemented the way they’re describing it sounds like a great addition.

pfft, finding out about Ohtani alone was worth the price of admission. Though I do wonder if it's limited to him.

I'm talking about playing the game. 30 minutes to play a game and give a hands on impression is laughable. With that little time with the game all he can definitely say is he had his "hands on" the controller.

Agreed. The re-balancing of off speed pitches vs fastballs is a welcomed change imo as well.
In regards to secondary pitches, I think people are jumping to the idea that now you won't be able to be effective at all with secondary pitches, or off speed pitches, which will not be the case.
Far too many times in '18 you can hang an offspeed pitch and not be punished. In fact too many times a hitter would take it. Also well placed fastballs were too often squared up for solid contact. Not saying it shouldn't happen at all, but it felt that it happened a little too often.
Looking forward to playing this on the 26th.
why only 30 minutes with the game? seems rather short to get a feel and look at the game and to play on all the difficulty settings.
sounds like a few tweaks and improvements to game play, but is it worth the full price of admission? I don't think it is. I for one will be skipping this year.
I love "looking into for the future." I've heard that for 5 years. The gameplay keeps getting better but they don't care at all about Franchise players. We'll all probably buy anyways so why would they care?
Another good tidbit we got from his "30 minutes" is that balls bouncing in the outfield and over the wall have been worked on. I'm expecting that not only will this reduce ground rule doubles, obviously :), this will also have an effect on how balls are played/mis-played off the walls.

This was confirmed in a stream.
being upset there is no info about franchise quite frankly feels like a waste of energy and I’d like to be one of those people that says “guys let’s wait for the stream” but I think realistically everyone needs to decide if they are OK with the changes being super polished gameplay. If not then it’s probably best to just accept that this years Show might not be for you.
I really hope we are pleasantly surprised with some shocking franchise news in the stream but I really don’t see it happening. From a marketing sense it doesn’t make any sense to sit on it and if that is what they are doing than kudos to Them for fooling me but I fully believe , with how vocal people have been about the lack of franchise improvements over the last few years, if there were any significant changes it be the first thing we would hear about.
As for myself as a franchise only guy, If it turns out the only real benefit of this years game is super refined gameplay, im OK with it.

Does it bother anyone else that we are less than a month out and we STILL haven't seen any actual gameplay?

    Not one bit.
This game delivers for me every year.
Why would I start doubting them now?
Unfortunately limited play time makes it tough to get a feel but there were some tidbits. Was this the person that was going to get those questions answered? Because there is no way to gather facts in 30 minutes of game exposure.

I'm not 100% sure that he's the person that Steve was collecting gameplay questions for, but he does mention in the article how he asked some of the questions that have been brought forth by OS.

Bought a ps4 in 2016 primarily for the Show (with a couple of other titles in mind as well).
After 2017 franchise mode became quite stale to me and I sold my system. I get they have a small team, but there's just SO much more they could add.

Nah, Pre-orders are pre-orders whether they are 2 months, weeks or days before release.
I trust the sources that we have heard from so far enough that if it was horribly broken we would know. Then we should get many hours of gameplay during the Dev tourney.
Well guys, it is what it is....as long as they throw a small little bone in franchise I am ok with it.  I believe we won't see any new franchise features in this generation of the PS4 but will likely see it in the next gen(PS5)..I hope anyways!..lol  Looking forward to MLB19 and how it plays.
Honestly, contract extensions alone makes the game worth the price of admission.
Don't get me wrong, I hope that there is more in store for Franchise mode, but that alone is a big one for me.

No not really. I mean, there is gameplay in every single stream they do. They show off all the new stuff so I get my fill that way. I get more out of that than if they released a full game or something and I had to try and figure out what was new myself.

FWIW, contributors to this site spend their own time and money away from their families to present news/content for the readers.
Whether the information provided is what you want to hear or not, telling our contributors they're "wasting their time" or they "should have just stayed home" is truly disingenuous. They're all doing a service for your enjoyment.

Honestly I can't believe I'm saying this but the addition of Mark Prior and Kerry Wood in DD might be the reason I buy. :duck:

That was a little in poor taste. But some of the comments about the "hands on preview" only being 30 minutes isn't meant to be a slight at the contributor. He can only accept what they offer.
I think more of us are little shocked that SDS would offer a "hands on preview" and only allow the contributor only 30 minutes. A lot of good could have came from him getting an extensive look at the game and then reporting his findings back to us.
SDS seems to be very secretive about gameplay this year, and quite frankly it's a little weird.

There's still an embargo on full reviews and uncovering material. There are parameters around what can be reported.

Balls bouncing on dirt have seemed reasonable, but on grass have been all wrong. So I hope they didn't much with the dirt bouncing is all.
Otherwise, this is a big thing that I'm glad they have focused on some. It didn't seem to show as such in the Twitch stream two weeks ago, but I guess we'll just have to assume that they've been on it since hen.
Wondering if the changes to pitching will require me to drop back to Hall of Fame instead of pitching on Legend?
Guess I'll have those 28 games or so of Spring Training to find out. :)

And yet managed to somehow not really show any raw gameplay footage.

Right. Instead they show off what new animations and features have been added to the gameplay. The point of watching raw gameplay is to look through and see what looks different and new. That stream isolated what you’d be looking for and featured it. It’s not like they’re keeping all footage of the game under a shroud of secrecy. It’s going to look and play like it always does with the new stuff they showed off added in.

At the same time Mercury watching clips of "gameplay" in a controlled environment, does not really refelect what the user will experience either. in a sense I saw more gameplay (someone holding a controller and actually playing) in the moments stream than the gameplay stream.

Isn’t that exactly what they are doing with the NDA’s and forbidding anyone from discussing or showing gameplay footage until a certain point? How fast was that 30 minute video of raw gameplay yanked off of the internet? Do you know how hard it is to get something completely removed from the internet?? That ish is gone and may never see the light of day again.
