MLB The Show 18 Twitch Stream - Presentation & Commentary (Archive Available)

Sony San Diego Studio hosted their third MLB The Show 18 Twitch stream earlier today, you can watch the archive below, or click here. We’ve posted some bullets from the stream below, but make sure to watch the entire video to get all of the details.

The new commentary team includes Mark DeRosa (MLB Network), who replaces Harold Reynolds in the broadcast booth, with Dan Plesac and Matt Vasgersian. Quite a few examples can be heard during the stream.

Dynamic storylines are new this year, which highlight interesting situations that play out through the course of a game, season or career for players, which provides plenty of various commentary, depending on what happens during the game, season and careers. Again, more examples are shown.

Watch MLB The Show 18 – Developer Stream #3 – Pres & Commentary from SonySanDiegoStudio on www.twitch.tv

Some images from various stadiums where shown.

FOG!

Fans have hands and fingers, they also react to on-field action appropriately.

The steam also goes into more detail about the improved weather, situational awareness and also revealed a new legend, Bob Gibson.

Do my eyes deceive me or is that chalk degradation in the LH batters box I see?

Most certainly was. In the 3rd inning too.

i dont get why people are complaining that DeRo is saying stuff every portion they are talking about. the point of the stream is to showcase the commentary, theres a reason why they have clips using Dero often.

It's the fact that in every commentary clip Dan would say De-Ro. Every one so far. Even when Matt asked a question. Dan would just say his name some times when commentating his own part.
That was funny watching the Mets fan going crazy over a cubs hit, I wish we could have got a bit more detail on crowd sounds and if they are dynamic and get louder or softer

Yep they said nothing about crowd sounds which was disappointing.
But I do not see how it was not greatly improved as well.
Still have road teams wearing their home white pants unfortunately.
And Correa and Springer, and other strong players like Corey Seager shouldn't have Two handed follow through 2, they should have two handed follow though 1.
Leave follow through 2 for smaller guys like Altuve.
Some much needed additions especially for those of us who have been with the series for a long time!
Happy to see the dynamic commentary (quick facts) will also apply to created and player locked players. Hopefully can play with commentary turned on (In The Dirt Here!) was not fun during 162 game season
Unfortunately have yet to see run(s) scored, home plate or new base running/ lead off/steal interactions outside of home runs high five's camera close ups.
Wish they would have shown playoff crowds. It's one of the most exciting times for baseball!
That fall during the Mo-Cap was hilarious!

Honestly I think that particular slap swing only applies to like 3-4 guys in the league. Even guys like Altuve and Dee Gordon have way more follow through than that. The Japanese hitters like Nori Aoki are the only ones who truly look similar to that, and even then they slap at it differently.

Yeah i'd prefer they remove that swing completely

Same. I always make sure I change it for every player who has it before I start a franchise or anything.
Good stream, commentary looks improved. They talk everything dynamic except OSD's. I hope 1 day they start working on stats and OSD's instead of the same OSD's for the past decade drill down in the stats show some analytics. I was hoping they would show batter/pitcher analysis hoping it's back on the d pad.
Also, we are going to play and let it breathe so you guys can hear the commentary. 3 years in a row they have made this statement and 3 years and they always start yapping away, making it hard to hear.,
I liked just about all of the stuff in the stream like the Quick facts (I think that's what they called it), all the info on the improved weather when it comes to rain and overcast games, the dynamic crowd, Situational awareness, Line up screen at the start of the game highlighting either a certain player or the entire team, and that you can no longer put an outfielder in the infield and have him still make plays (unless he has it as one of his secondary positions).
One thing I noticed though during the batter walkups is that it switched between the players position and what hand he bats with. Is that how it's going to be in the final build or will it just show the players position every time?
I want to watch the whole thing on VoD because I was only able to hear most of the stream rather than watch it, but I liked a lot of what I heard (I'll elaborate on that stuff after I've seen the whole stream). I think they could have maybe picked out some better examples for the Plesac > DeRosa clips because the way it was it still sounded like the same structure even if they were in the same booth. Hopefully they have some actual back and forth conversation rather than the "one talks, then the other does" structure.

Finally won something from the streams. Too bad it's only 10 standard packs though.

    Congratulations D-Ro !
Lucky lads from US, our poor Canadian souls are left apart once again.
that giants Dodgers game how Madbum didn't get lit up to the 5th innings.
then in the 9th they say 'this game was over before it started''' ummm no it was only 2-0 on the 5th innings then he got lit up. It should have said 'he was great but struggled in the 5th innings and that was the turning point'
This is exactly why Commentary doesn't work in sports games you can't ever dynamically implement it they would have had to of recorded about 10 separate different lines to make that sounds realistic
    Blegh
Anyone else just hate the inning ending scene where they show the fans dancing around someone else holding up a sign (GO )?

It's way overdone, they should have them making cheering or jeering gestures.
    Close game fans Nail Biting
Down by 2 late innings fans show a look of concern
fans messing with rival fans like look at the scoreboard by pointing up
blow out of course a little dancing
    thewalrustwaspaul
    Its overused.

Why is it still around anyway? How often do you see that on real television? I wish they just scrap that animation!
Who else saw that ^5 inning for the Dodgers-Giants game and breathed a huge sigh of relief when you didn't hear any commentary with the words "bit of a lull in the middle innings"?
    Genuinely enjoyed this stream.
I thought the conversations between Dero and Plesac were good. The only thing that worries me is that these convos will be too long and take 1-3 pitches to listen to in its entirety.
Yes, Plesac says "Hey Dero.." almost everytime but after listening to Plesac on MLB Tonight for years he does this in real life a lot. He always says the guy who asked the question or the guy sitting next to him, just a trait he has. And a lot of broadcast teams do as well, (Mets Booth, Keith always says "And Ronny,...."). It's a way Broadcast teams show respect, like "Hey dero I know you have something to say, but I'm going to say my piece but then I want you to say what you're thinking." It's a good chemistry thing.
All those camera cuts look beautiful. Blimp shots, "drone" shots. The camera behind the glass window in Cleveland was awesome.
Full Speed Replays are something I've been asking for for years. Happy they were finally able to implement them.
Crowd reaction is also a key improvement that is getting overlooked. Go back in 17 and play a game, you'll notice the crowd is way too hyped up for random moments throughout the game. And then when something good happens, it's not as noticeable because they've been standing for every strike. It adds a ton to realism.
Kirby also mentioned they will now vary the camera cuts during a HR sequence. Instead of, every home run being the exact same "Batter touching first, manager clapping, runner touching 2nd, pitcher getting new ball, batter rounding 3rd, stadium shot, batter touching home" sequence. That's huge.
The only, and I mean only drawback from the stream was the HR Cam. It is such an eyesore during a Live Real Life Broadcast, you would never see a camera aiming at the back of the batter as he flips the bat and watches the ball fly.
I get it, they added a lot of bat flips to the game and it appeals to a large population of gamers out there. These camera put a focus on this epic bat flips.
However, for those who want to "watch" a real life broadcast, this camera is ridiculous. It would be a great Replay camera, I love bat flips, but I'd see them in a replay after seeing the ball land, the HR sequence and running the bases.
This should have been the little things stream. Amazing amount of detail.
Kirby can drain the **** out of the word “dynamic”... weather, crowds, crowd noise...etc.
And the FOG! Wow... looked incredible.

I don't think it was a coincidence that these two streams were back-to-back. "Little Things" and presentation are really two sides of the same coin.
Glad they addressed the question of how dynamic the rain effects are - sounds like there are no guarantees of what will happen once it starts falling. Even if it was just falling "lines" last year like they said I thought it was a really good effect, and the difference between light and heavy rain will be very noticeable.
I like that the generic presentation packages are gaining more of their own identity with new theme music and updated visuals.
The storylines thing sounds interesting, hopefully there will be enough content to keep them from repeating too often. I'm all for anything that helps keep the franchise experience fresh and new.
No opinion on DeRosa yet, and I probably won't have one until the game launches. Commentary's one of those things that I can't really judge until I'm playing the game for myself.
I believe they said this was from a regular PS4 (not Pro) today, and I definitely saw some frame drops when the action moved to the fielding cameras. Just something to keep an eye on.
This game looks incredible. I love that they fixed the Catcher helmets, too. Really hope, but doubt, that they go back to “the show live” like in ‘14. Where you could play the daily games and it would have correct rosters, stats etc. but you could also use changes to stances, equipment, windups and CAP’s instead of it now just being the generic scea updated roster.
Great stream. My favorite part was how they did crowd reactions. I've posted about this a few times, but they look to have captured that moment between anticipatory excitement and jubilation/disappointment in fan reactions. That's HUGE to me for immersion.
    Super pumped about this stuff.

I didn’t notice. What did they fix on catchers helmets?
Some really cool little things here. The new stadium camera angles are refreshing. The emotion animations were cool as well. I thought Puig was going to get tossed after his little tirade, haha. Crowd looks way better although I wish they wore more jerseys. Fog looked nice. Bud Black is in. Liked how he said Matty doesn't need to comment on every single play. Hope Todd Helton will be a legend.

Lets face it guys. The commentary is going to get stale no matter what they do. When I'm playing, I tune it out.
I do like the fact there having more of a conversation than just saying lines.
I'm glad to here about the new presentation music.

For Franchise- is weather still going to be auto generated? Plays into the realism for me instead of choosing whether i want rain, or overcast or sun.
I know in years past it was Auto generated in franchise, with the ability to change it if we want ( i never did). SO hope they left that in

The Cloud Cover option was still in the frontend before they loaded into their franchise game, so I'm assuming last year's method hasn't changed - it randomly chooses the weather for that screen, but you can change it manually if you want.
Well, I shouldn't say it's necessarily random - I'm sure it auto generates based on the game location's climate to some extent.
Totally being lazy here as I don’t have the energy or time to watch the stream tonight. Can someone touch on the “situational awareness” feature and what they described as its impact?

    Thats right, i missed that!
Also, Something i missed- ( i havent played `17.) im a 16 Junkie played 10 years of franchise mode, really deep into this game
But when your batting, how do you see the opposing pitchers Pitch Types/Speed. In 16 Once you pressed Pause you can see the pitches/Pitch Speeds/% of strike thrown, but i dont see that in these videos.

You can’t ‘that’s what she said’ yourself, Michael.
Yeah just checked 16 Again, other than the pause screen, Where are you able to see the Pitch Type,Pitch Speed % of each pitch thrown, Balls, Strikes, Total pitches.
This is when your batting and want to see what the opposing pitcher has to offer
Anyone who has played 17 let me know
Hey MLB The Show i noticed you have a red LED MLB The Show sign in AT&T Park I was wondering if ya could put that same color sign in Yankee Stadium instead of the blue in the future.

Just played a game to check, during the game, press right on the Dpad. That’ll bring up the pitcher-batter matchup screen. Just cycle through the batter-pitcher breakdown menu. You'll get the # of each pitch thrown and the strike % of each pitch.

I love that they added this. The ONLY thing I don't like about it is that Ramone already said players won't be ejected unless it's a pitcher hitting batters. A player acting like that is going to get tossed more often then not so it's not realistic and a bit arcade.
If MLB won't allow ejections and brawls why would they allow this in the game?
Kinda off topic, but if Acuna makes the opening day roster, it will suck if the commentators will refer to him by his jersey number. I wish they did some mid season updates.
I was a little skeptical about the dynamic commentary angle, only because it still felt like things were still assigned to specific players (like when they said something about Bumgarner and Kershaw). My hope is that even if you're 25 years into franchise mode and you have two other lefties of the same caliber, that that dialogue piece can still be triggered, or at least something like it. Kirby and Ross did address that it is in there for that very reason, so let's hope that it does play out like that!

    "It's an inanimate ****ing object!"
Overall the new commentary sounds much better and more natural than years past. One thing that has driven me crazy in years past and still is, for example, around 33 minutes in there's a homerun and the commentary is just lagging. Meaning, the ball is already landing in the stands when you hear the commentator say "Profar looking up... and it's gone!" The "Profar looking up" should happen earlier and not while the ball is landing in the stands.
I also love the new sound of the ball hitting the wall out in the stands on a homerun early on in the stream.
Damn, was hoping during the cool blimp and other stadium camera shots that we would get a good view at Fenway from atop the Monster... really hoping this is in.

What about the Pitch Speed? How do we know when a new pitcher comes in the game what the speed is for each pitch. For example in 16 when you press pause...you see this
    4SFB 96 MPH
    Slider 88 mph
    Change up 85 mph
    Curveball 78 mph
So you always know what your up against. Seems kind of odd that in game now you have no idea

jeez last year all we got was the Cubs in every game, now all we get is the Yankees in the streams lol

I bet Judge has a major reason to do with it. I want next year's cover boy to be a NY Met. Maybe Noah Syndergaard or deGrom. The Show guys seem to have a great relationship with them

    -Better conversation commentary
    -The drone shots are beautiful!
-Love the fact the crowd now reatcs appropriately and don’t go crazy before they know if it’s a homerun or not. Hopefully the lazy baseeunner walk (that would give away if it was a homerun right away) is gone as well.

I really hope they can eventually patch in those player portraits of the players who are added into the game. It's a "little thing" that I care about and helps me when navigating the menus. Just for the rookies and callups would be nice during roster updates
Right now I thought the 1st developer stream was a bit underwhelming, and I have not yet seen the 2nd.
Regardless of that, I have preordered the game last week in the psn store.
I like that they have again added tons of new animations. The improved catcher blocking looks nice too.
With the new cut scenes and player emotion I hope to get a fresh feel again.
Dynamic crowd attendance is also a nice addition. Same goes for the improved fog and rain.
There is still some stuff I’m less positive on.
New broadcaster : this is nice of course. But adding Reynolds one year and then replacing him the next seems like being back to square one.
Still the player stories and background is an addition, but without the above the might have been able to progress more than they did now.
Same goes for player emotion. I’m glad they do it now, but it was there in 16, almost completely gone in 17, and now back again. Happy they are in but wonder about these choices.
The graphics look better again. I have a ps4 pro but am still on a hd tv, and the game looks gorgeous.
It’s nice to see a continuous improvement on that each year.
Rain delays, happy for the guys who wanted it but I couldn’t care less about it.
I do agree with the guys about the colors of some jerseys being off and having a washed out look.
I’m also a bit annoyed about the developer’s cryptic reactions to it. The colors are simply off, no harm in just admitting that.
Other that than I do like the fact that the developers are on this forum and participating in discussions, a lot of developers can learn from that.
Going to watch the 2nd stream tonight but happy that I preordered and looking forward to play the game on the 23rd!
Being a dutchie, and baseball not being popular over here means that the price is only € 49,= in our psn store. Not a bad deal at all.

Here's a pic from another stream of In Game Pause menu. It has the Balls/Strikes/Total, But nothing about the Pitch speeds and what arsenal you are facing. How do you know during game if your facing a flame thrower- or something with a really slow curve
Also in 16 When you press the options ( pause) button
It would show the batter Stats 0-2 , 31 HRS, 75 RBI . In that pause screen there it only shows the game stats.
So in Franchise mode when your playing through a season, if you skip past the Batter walkup part, how do you know what a guys stats are in game?

He is is giving the other team signals, Rob Manfred might have to get involved.

Nah, I think he is checking someone out in almost creeper fashion. If he was giving signals his hands would be moving. He's a creeper that is bad at his job!
As opposed to my other pic from the earlier stream, this one from yesterday shows
IP, H, BB, SO not Balls, Strikes, Total..so I'm assuming that's a work in progress?
But for someone whos plays franchise/season modes etc. Those things are important to look at from game to game, I'm not sure how much this matters in online play.

Interested to see end of game celebrations - in years past they were go right to a cutscene of the players mobbing the hitter at home plate and the entire crowd would be sitting down.
Not to mention the cut scenes were a lower FPS so immersion would suffer.
Hoping some of this got taken care of as well... would love them to scrap cut scenes altogether.
I'm crossing my fingers that dynamic scheduling is in franchise mode this year. :y220b:

Here’s a screen cap of ‘17s pause menu. Speeds and ball/strike totals are there, as well as batter stats. Will be weird if ‘18s been changed and doesn’t have that on the menu.

it's always been in the game... what am i missing?

Its not in 17. Only thing you ever see is in the RH batters box after a slide, but there is no degradation outside of that. You probably missed the uproar over it early last year lol.

Thanks for sharing, yeah from the pictures I got from the stream, none of this information was there. Speeds/Ball/strike/Total, as well as HR, RBI Total, Pull Tendency, Spray chart %, etc.
So it seems as though they revamped it and it looks great, just hope they make sure these things are in there still

I like most of your requests here and hope to see them in the future. The only one I am less concerned with is the umbrellas. A lot of stadiums now ban them. I know not all but that seems to be the direction they are heading.
I still like what you shared. The unbutton jerseys would be welcomed and we all want expansion, stadium creator, etc. Keep sharing ideas since we know this team does come to these boards.

That's a screen/info i would like to be able to access with the touchpad. I have know idea what the TP is used for now but i am sure it was used to good effect in 14 but has been changed for some other purpose since.

Yeah, probably not a very important thing , but we all have those little things that just bother us lol. So now its probably going to bug you too so you will have to buy TS18.................SDS, you're welcome.

My favorite stream thus far! I love the player emotions and all the new camera angles and updated themes and music. Things like that always make the game feel new.
Pretty much happy with everything they showed off, I can't wait to play this game!
A few down notes, I didn't like how it sometimes showed the players' position on the OSD as they came to bat, and other times showed which side of the plate they bat from. It should always show position. Hope this is fixed.
I'm kind of bummed they don't have the blinking LED lights at Yankee Stadium for homeruns. Hope they can get that in next year. Also looks like Chad Green has a generic pitching motion. The guy was one of the best relievers in all of baseball last season. Maybe his motion hasn't been added in the game yet? Hopefully that is the case.
The fog demonstration at Wrigley was incredible. They absolutely nailed how it looks during inclement weather. Also looked good at ATT Park. Now they just need to darken the sky and turn up the lights earlier at night to complete the ATT makeover. It was a pet peeve during my character's 14 years with the Giants that the night games looked nothing like actual broadcasts.
And I'm probably in the minority, but toning down crowd movement behind home plate is huge for me. Less is more in this case and it was bizarre that everyone seemed to have ADD in the stands previously. It probably wouldn't have bothered me so much if I hadn't seen Pro Yakyuu Spirits get crowd behavior right on the PS3. One other thing they should be able to easily change to improve the realism when looking towards the plate: change the home plate ads between innings, never during them. I have no idea why they have them constantly rotating during play.
Commentary was ok. Don't care about back and forth between color guys though as it's bound to get stale quickly. PLEASE BRING BACK THE OPTION TO MUTE INDIVIDUAL COMMENTATORS. Considering that it sounds like Vasgersian didn't record many lines with the other guys (don't think I heard him interact with them once) I don't think there would be too many awkward handoffs in a solo booth.
Finally, the new camera angles during downtime and full speed replays are minor additions but welcome nonetheless.
Best stream by far so far for me but no shocking surprises but I expected that.
    Good points!
    1. Fog and Rain improvements!
    2. New Camera views from around the stadiums!
    3. Crowd improvements!
    4. New gameplay animations really bring the game to life more then ever!
    5. New Theme 2 presentation looks fantastic and I think it actually looks better then MLB Network theme! Hats off to SDS on that :)
    6. All new presentation music!
    7. Lots more player emotion!
    8. Could just be my eyes but the grass and dirt do look improved with richer colors?
    Bad Points!
    1. Matty V still sounds like a stale no excitement video game voice instead of a real life voice!
    2. New Home Run cameras look nice but should only be used for replays. And option to turn them off would be really nice!
    3. Some miner annoyances with certain stat overlays that display wrong info in my opinion!
    4. Looks like not many if at all any new kind of stat overlays shown during gameplay!
    5. Looks like still no Pre and more importantly post game rapup show with voice over and cool overlay 2KSports style!
    6. No Citizens Bank Park footage which has me worried again nothing major has been changed!
No "Major" complaints however things look to be shaping up very nice from what I have seen and should be a very nice upgrade over 17! It's definitely baby steps but I guess that is a good thing and is the way you build a gem of a game that MLB The Show is! :) I just hope I do not have to wait another 10 years or so to finally see all my wishes make it into the game :) lol

I am definitely onboard with the open jersey and injury option references posted. However I feel that it cannot be implemented because it's probably violates some MLB uniform code. I would also like to see extra batting gloves in the pockets of batters in the box but it's probably a MLB uniform violation. But if open jersey's were implemented they would need some type of cloth physics mentioned in the uniform thread. But I guess it would look okay with the kind of current stale look but I would rather see cloth affected by the new atmosphere effects. Then I would be slightly more leaning towards okay "The Future Is Here" tag line.
Some dynamic injuries would be a welcome addition help differentiate players abilities and on the field! It still looks like every fielder can make all the same identical plays. I hoped ratings would impact this but I am not sold because I see the constant (accurate) jump throws from all infield position players present from MLB 17 both CPU and user controlled!
Not sure how much longer I can wait out for (dynamic) and personality based running animations, lead off, stealing etc. Currently every MLB player leads off and runs back to the bag the same exact way! Just makes the game feel and look so predictable and sucks the life out of one of the core fundamentals of baseball.
It was mentioned in a early stream that tons of new animations have been added but the base running one's remain the same based on what has been shown up until this point unfortunately. Tweak these even 60% and it will definitely change the look and feel of the way the game plays even if it just acts as a mask.
If I was given the option between tweaking the base running animations or having a interaction such as a high five for trail or lead runners when crossing the plate in a multi or single run scoring situation instead of walking back to the dugout like nothing happened! Man that's a tough one!
I would say home plate lead and trail runner interactions that are not home run related! Oh the pain LOL!
Umbrellas at sporting or any crowd events with tiered seating are some of the most selfish things you can do there, lol. Bring a poncho and stop blocking other's enjoyment/view of the game.

You could have the top button on the jersey unbuttoned in MLB 2k7 and MLB 2k8, so 10+ years later, unless it's a MLB policy which is prohibited from being in the game, I don't see why they wouldn't be able to program that in.

I would be ecstatic with them having shaders for flapping in the wind like 2K did, as well as how the uni's move around in the basketball games.
That would be huge for visual immersion.
Maybe PS5 (for more memory bandwidth) for the uni's being completely separate than the player model, due to how much they pump into the atmosphere and stadiums already, compared to other sports games that need not worry so much with the crowd/stadium viewpoints like baseball deals with.

I go to games with family sometimes and the ladies prefer an umbrella. Not cool to use them directly in front of someone else but they're nice to have at sparsely attended games or when the rain has scared a lot of people out of their seats.

OPACY has an overhang over a ton of field level seats which is awesome for both rain and brutal Baltimore summer sun. They're cheap too.

It's way overdone, they should have them making cheering or jeering gestures.
    Close game fans Nail Biting
Down by 2 late innings fans show a look of concern
fans messing with rival fans like look at the scoreboard by pointing up
blow out of course a little dancing

On TV they just show fans. The fans don't know they're on TV. Just do that.

We are talking about a video game the dev deliberately created these scenes. If they are going to do so I was suggesting instead of using the dancing, show real scenarios. Like for real the fans don't know they are on TV? You don't say..
Just watching now as I try to plow through some Friday afternoon work, and I really like the crowd reaction enhancements and attendance logic. Hopefully the crowd noise falls in line as well.

It was said in the stream that they are laying the ground work for new crowd audio in 18 and will build a lot more on it going into 19.
I really like the new Theme 2 Batting Order overlay in 18!
Showing Fielding Position,AVG and Bat Left,Right or Switch is all good info that needs to be in the batting order overlay and SDS has delivered! :)

Anybody else have any thoughts or opinions on this.
Maybe it has to do with being about to chose different themes for presentation? or maybe the Speeds/Ball Strike Total, Hitter HR RBI totals will be an option on the Dpad?
    bigmike0077
Here's a pic from another stream of In Game Pause menu. It has the Balls/Strikes/Total, But nothing about the Pitch speeds and what arsenal you are facing. How do you know during game if your facing a flame thrower- or something with a really slow curve

Well being a nerd.. Before every game I "scout" the team including the starting pitcher. So I know beforehand what's what.
BUT hopefully it's in there somewhere during the game.
Main reason I really wish they'd add an export file feature so I could print out rosters, stats etc...
Or even a print option straight from PS4...
been asking a while so doubt it ever makes it...

If I'm not mistaken when they showed one of the new presentation cameras in Cleveland you can see the netting was expanded along both dugouts. That was the only one I saw.
Also can confirm there is netting over monument park.
It also looks like the restaurant (batters eye) in Yankee Stadium windows are all black now, without the white lines separating the individual windows...looks night and day better! but they were still in there for the judge griffey video...hoping it was maybe an older build

This should be an easy addition, plus they added the net over monument park, the timer board in left, and looks like the white lines in the restaurant windows were removed...maybe they havent put in the entire homerun sequences yet in the build we are seeing. Looks like they gave extra attention to Yankee Stadium because Judge is featured...They even added in the LED lights, so I think they should flash during a homerun
    PsnHitman17
Did they show any of the new netting in ball parks?

From the stream, they had the new netting protecting the fans behind the dugouts at Coors Field and Progressive Field.

I wish they had coordinated the storylines feature with new stat overlays. When the commentators discuss the fireballer vs the crafty veteran, it would mean so much more to see stats comparing their K/9 or in the instance of the home run story line to have a stat overlay listing the homeruns hit by who and each inning and comparing it to a team record or a season record as a point of comparison. That way when these storylines come up in a different game, it will still feel fresh.
Also, I wish there were more season type storylines. It seems like storylines are just contained to the game. It would be nice to hear about pennant races and have the commentators comment on your divison rival's score during the game.
Nevertheless, a lot of the presentation elements look good. Especially like the look of the new theme and lineup screens!
Ok I just have signed on to this site . I have been reading this site for years on getting tips on the game. So I took the plunge and I registered. Ok let me first start by saying I have played MLB since 15. I just don't see the reason to because nothing is really upgraded that's big for the next year's version. So I played MLB 17 over my buddies , I mean really it's the same game from years ago not significant upgrades. I am a big commentary guy because the commentary is supposed to immerse you into the game and calling the action on the field but the commentary is stale and Vasgersan needs to go. They need to do what 2k did with there commentary I mean why can't Sony do this it's beyond me. Also I will not be buying the game is the developers don't let the animations play out. Why do they have to cut the animations like for instance the catcher throwing the ball back to the pitcher this needs to be fixed . The catcher should always throw the ball back tonthem pitcher and not have some cut away animation to hurry up the game. That's what the X button is for. Also when I played MLB 17 there were hardly any replays. Granted I only played like 3 games but it seemed like the replays were lacking. But my main grip is the commentary and the animations. Why have the fast play option in settings if you cut the animations anyway. This is ridiculous. Also why did Sony get rid of the option to choose a slow game they took that option out. It's only normal and fast play . I like to play with all the animations and replay like a real broadcast game. I still don't know why they can't announce the names of the starting line up before each game. That's another stupid move. So I just want to Say I really don't have high hopes for this game but I could be wrong lol
Awful aggressive post for a so called "new" registered member.....
If you see no upgrades going to 17 (ball physics alone make it a new game).. then...ok
I am not saying it's a sucky game. But Sony knows that the commentary is a problem. If that was fixed and the the animations and if they announced the starting line ups of each player I would he happy. It plays welll but I am talking about the presentation part of the game. Ball physics are fine. I don't think adding Derosa is gonna change anything. But we will see lol.
How will we see if you don't buy it? I suppose you could rent it or watch YouTube videos.
Trust me, no one thinks the commentary needs an overhaul more than I do, but it's not as much the people as it is the structure of it. That being said, sometimes new voices that come in just freshen things up anyway, i.e. changing them just for the sake of changing them. I like Matt as a personality for MLB Network and what he does in the booth, but he doesn't necessarily reflect that in this game. It would just take way too much to change him though, at least for now.

I am not just saying change the commentators. Matt is bland. He has to go or unless they get all 3 commentators in the booth and upgrade the commentary like NBA 2k. That's all I am saying.
Also yes I never purchase games same day it releases that's crazy. Companies now send consumers half finished games till the patched cone out. Which I think is crazy.

This would be true if some of those so called ball physics weren't so unrealistic (i.e. Rocket bunts, home runs going foul by one inch regularly, ball curve being completely overdone, etc.).

I am not holding back on this Matty V still sounds absolutely terrible in MLB The Show 18! :(
He and he alone is what is killing the commentary in MLB The Show. In MLB The Show he sounds nothing I mean NOTHING like he does when broadcasting real life baseball games. After all these years Matty V still sounds like a stale boring robot! He is so boring and stale and absolutely not organic and Live sounding at all! There are so many issues with him I can not name them all. However one thing I still noticed in the stream that gets very annoying is too many times Matty V refers to players as "He" instead of saying the players name. There are so many things wrong with the commentary but one thing that could go a long way in making it sound much better is if all the commentators especially Matty V would say the players name most of the time instead of just saying "He". The new and old color Commentary guys while definitely not perfect have never really been a big issue for me.
I have seen a few people on here say commentary in sports games in general will never be good and that is just not true! NBA2K Basketball and their older Baseball games have very realistic sounding commentary. No even those games are not perfect but I have never played those games and thought to myself that the commentary does not sound like real life. I don't know what's in the water over at 2K but man they sure know what they are doing when it comes to audio!
The SDS Presentation & Commentary developers really seem like nice guys so I really hate criticizing they work. But the fact of the matter is we have been dealing with the same below average commentary for over 10 years now. And it just really bugs me because almost everything else gets improved year after year. I will say one thing although a lot more new stat overlays need be added the Presentation & Commentary developers have done a fantastic job in improving the visual aspect of the Presentation in 18.
Bottom line video game Matty V just makes me sad. And knowing that we are stuck with him makes it even worse!:(
Hopefully the saving grace will be much improved stadium crowd atmosphere in 18 so that way it will still sound good when I mute the commentary. :y220:
My Ultimate Fantasy for MLB The Show would be if SDS could some how break into 2K Studios and steal their commentary and put it into the game. What a match made in heaven that would be :) lol
I've bought MLB The Show every year since 2012. Every year it is the same thing. Every year I look for reasons not to buy the game (I certainly skip years in the NHL, NFL, NBA and FIFA games). But every year SDS makes some sort of change that makes me buy their game and so far I have not regretted a purchase. This year is no different. I went into 2018 saying to myself "I will not buy the game this year". I always get into the Dog Days of Summer and can never finish my season, etc, etc, etc.
But this year the changes SDS have made to the game make it another "must buy for me" were the improvements to the fielding animations especially the improvements to catcher handling passed balls and new improved tagging animations where the fielders are actually aware of where the base runners are. I can still have tons of fun playing MLB The Show 17, but when I see how they have improved the fielding, it drives me crazy in 17 when free bases are given up because of a ball in the dirt at the catchers feet. This has nothing to do with presentation and commentary, so to stay on topic only time will tell as to how I will feel about the changed commentary. It can definitely be better, but it's not a show stopper for me. So the other presentation change I am curious to see is how the crowd attendance will react in blow out games and/or games late in the season for non-contenders. Clearly not a show stopper, but anything that brings the game a little closer to how the real world works is good to me.
But this is just my opinion. I really hate the guys at SDS. I do. Every year I want to skip a year and not give them my hard earned $$$. But every year they have made some sort of change that I want. :y220b:

I have bought the show since '13, and I don't regret each purchase one bit. I play this game year around. I usually take a break here and there, but always come back. There definitely things I dislike about the game each year, but I can deal with the warts.
Now, I also buy Madden every year and play it about a month. Then It's usually a dust collector.
Sorry for getting off topic, but different strokes for different folks.

What about not announcing the starters names before the games . This effects the presentation to. Also. They better have fixed the catching throwing the ball back to the pitcher in real time and not have swipes or whatever you call it. That bothers me alot.
I'm a big fan of Matt Vasgersian...in real life. He's an awesome play-by-play guy and it's a joy to listen to him call games, especially playoff games.
Unfortunately, in The Show, his performance is NOTHING like how he is in real life. Maybe he's just a terrible voice actor, or maybe the people directing him are having him act mellow. Whatever it is, it's not working. It just isn't.

This would be true if some of those so called ball physics weren't so unrealistic (i.e. Rocket bunts, home runs going foul by one inch regularly, ball curve being completely overdone, etc.).

It's true regardless. It was a nice upgrade from what we had.
Sure it's a work in progress but I'm sorry I'm never going down the path of
"misery and despair" over a video game especially coming from stick men baseball with all balls being arrow straight.
We all want things to keep getting better but the whole "Sim" (And I'm as sim as they come) attitude with many has went way over the rainbow.
If this game was 100% sim no one on this site would play more than 3 games after going 0-12 with 12 K's..
It's become that laughable here with the complaints or SIM and Realism..
There's got to be a balance with realism and a Game that's fun for EVERYONE....
I'm tired and on a stretch at work but man I come here to "talk" VIDEO GAME baseball and seeing the constant whining/ complaining over and over is really sad.

Well lets not forget that his lines are from decades ago. Other than adding minimal changes or as they like to call it "updates", for the most part his work is unchanged. If they re record his lines, i'm confident he will sound way better.

That is a very good point as well. That is a huge undertaking to re-record everything, investment wise and time. Not saying it will never happen, but I can see the situation that they are trying to get the banter (stories, etc.) back and forth with the color guys first locked in with their new recording system of having them in the same booth, then maybe tackle that down the road.

Anyone else just hate the inning ending scene where they show the fans dancing around someone else holding up a sign (GO )?

Been every year since the game has been on this gen of consoles, why in the world is it still in or at least used as much, for me it is an absolute immersion killer!!!:splat:

It is immersion-killing. Especially when you see two Ramones in there holding up signs supporting the Yankees! I don't mind it too much, just wish it would show up less often.

yes and why are all those devs in the crowd, I don't mind to have them there in fact but rather like less than 1 of 100 not 1 in 10 or more.
thing is I can recognize those faces and seeing them all over again kind of also points me at the lack of crowd models lol.
personally I feel in that kind of serious simulation like the show wants to be is not as much space for, let's call them, easter eggs. an acarde game might be a different story, but this is getting old as well. grow up guys lol

You hit the nail on the head

What about not announcing the starters names before the games . This effects the presentation to. Also. They better have fixed the catching throwing the ball back to the pitcher in real time and not have swipes or whatever you call it. That bothers me alot.

It isn't wrong or broken. SCEA chose to take the game in a quicker paced direction. What I'm trying to say is, don't count on it being changed.
I think they should have an option for how it was years ago when all animations played out, but it's gone.

Yeah it still there when I saw the stream. Them why have am option for fast play makes no sense. I picked up MLB 17 because it was cheap. I haven't played MLB since 15. I mean yes they have some improvements but when playing 17 I got so bored after 5 games. I know baseball is slow it's just that we are seeing the same thing from Sony year after year with alittle upgrade . I think they need to scratch everything and start over to make it fresh. I used to love MLB just not any more because nothing has changed even on the new platform.
Playing a franchise game in 17, and I noticed the crowd is already doing some of the things they stated in this stream. It's just inconsistent the two examples given I experienced in my game.

Their sales would plummet if they reversed course and built what sounds like a bare bones game that you are advocating.

They may be doing it for the PS5, but yes it wouldn't make any sense to do on this generation of consoles.

You can pick up a few tidbits from these streams when they go to the developer only code screens. For example if you freeze it at 1:33:57 you see a couple interesting things.
high speed hitting analysis temperature/overcast disabled - I knew temperature impacted hitting and gameplay but overcast is new to me.
always no doubt home run - I'm sure they previously said home runs were only accomplished by the distance of the ball exceeding the distance of the wall. There are in fact no doubt home runs programmed into the game.
override manager personality - not sure what that means. Does each individual manager have his own personality or is this simply a way to stop the AI from making managerial moves?
force arm acc attrib - there is an arm acceleration attribute?
Also 3 seconds later there is a list of ways in which players can get injured.
Maybe it's just me but I find this stuff interesting because it peels back the cover and provides a bit of insight into the inner workings of the game for things which exist but are hidden from view.

    Two things:
    I think thats arm accuracy.
And I wonder if the force no doubt HR is to force the presentation and not the result?

I'm guessing that widget is only there for testing reasons. Making sure the homerun cameras, bat flips, home run presentations are working, etc.

Yes, it is only on the debug units.

That's why we have different modes. Fast plays and broadcast play. They had that in MLB 15 I think and they took it out. We should have the option for Fast play where they skip some presentation stuff or broadcast or slow play and let the presentation play out.

Arm accuracy is right, I was wrong.
I disagree about the force no doubt HR for this reason - in the game there are home runs which are in doubt until the ball goes over the wall. The animation begins before the ball leaves the bat. I think there are no doubt HR. I also would prefer to be able to turn the animation off and just watch it from normal camera.

The ability to force it to happen is obviously only in the developer kit but the fact that it verifies there are no doubt home runs is new. Previously they said home runs are only based upon whether the ball distance exceeds the wall at that location.

No doubt HRs have always been verified. They have their own presentation sequence that is different than shorter HRs. Thus the widget being available to test the presentation aspects of the no doubt HR.

That widget probably just makes sure the ball goes at least 450 feet or something.
I recall back in at least MLB '99 that I once tried to create a player with no last name so that I could get a jersey with no name on the back like the Yankees have. What I found was the game automatically assigned the last name "Murray" to the back of my jersey. Every time I hit with power though, I would hit 606 foot home runs. Every. Single. Time. I thought it was some sort of glitch.
Anyway, at some point I ended up somehow seeing the game's credits and saw there was a Scott Murray on the development team, so I created a player named Scott Murray, putting two-and-two together. Low and behold, I believe every ball he hit was a 609 foot home run. This eventually got me to find out that I could get negative scores and stats if I went too high up, but I digress.
The point is they probably don't have something in play when we play to say that they will sometimes let a no-doubt home run kick in. I'm guessing that widget just overrides all of the other ones and says "This ball will be fair and go 450+ feet," which of course would probably also kick in the no-doubt presentation.
Nothing sinister here that I can see.
Small sample size but so far I'm really missing Harold Reynolds. Everybody sounds the same in the booth again and I'm not seeing much upside from having multiple guys recording at the same time. Might end up muting the booth again.
There was a question during the dev tourney stream about being able to adjust individual announcer volumes and Shaeffer assumed they still had that option before Kirby corrected him. Please put it back in, Kirby!

Agree with the comments about them sounding the same, and it's something I picked up during the presentation stream too. Harold definitely had a unique voice in the booth (Matt's is very distinct too, of course), but DeRosa and Plesac do sound very similar to each other, such that at times it's hard to determine who's talking.
Also, now that we have rain delays could we please have more start time options when we play exhos? The game is already missing various Sunday night start times among a few other daytime options but rain delays mean games can theoretically start anytime from 11am to something like 9-10pm. The Show has outstanding shadows, why not show them off by allowing us to choose from more late afternoon/early evening starts times? And late night start times would be a good way to showcase the improved dynamic crowd logic.

Hell, the game has a 24-hour clock (trust me, I've tested that 11:00 AM starts can go to dark and 7:00 PM games can roll into the morning). They should let us choose any hour of the day like MLB 2K7 did, including 3:00 AM if we so pleased.
Not sure where to put this and I didn't want to start a new thread. Anyway, wanted to point out that 18's Coors Field pitching broadcast camera is out of date. The Rockies switched over to a centered behind the pitcher camera sometime during the past few years. Not sure if The Show had the right camera last year since I always used a custom camera during play. Just like at Fenway and PNC, the old camera is actually still used by some visiting teams and nationally televised games as well. All those other parks have the centered camera in The Show.
Top image is the correct camera currently used by the Rockies broadcasters, bottom is the old one which The Show 18 is incorrectly using:
