Madden NFL 21 Patch Available - Includes Updates For Gameplay, Franchise Mode, Playbooks & More - Patch Notes

The new Madden NFL 21 game update has arrived, which includes Franchise Mode update 1 of 3, along with plenty of updates for gameplay and playbooks. It also adds the ability to play your friends in The Yard.

Check out the patch notes below.

NOTE: You will not be required to restart your franchise after the patch has been installed.

Gameplay Updates

  • Fixed an issue allowing offensive users to breakout of the handoff on Gun Flex Y Off Mtn Counter and run with the QB, making the play appear to be a version of QB Draw
  • Fixed an issue causing awkward ball warping on some on HB Toss plays
  • Fixed all distance-related abilities to take pass-leading into account as a triggering condition
    • DEV NOTE: Route Abilities were not giving catching benefits due to the pass leading of the Quarterback. E.G. A receiver with Short Out Elite would not receive any benefit if the receiver was inside the numbers when the pass started even if the pass lead caused the receiver to catch the ball short, outside of the numbers. Any time a ball is led to the area on the field that the Ability is designated for the receiver will get all the Ability catching benefits.
  • Fixed a playbook issue on a specific Jet Sweep PA play causing a blocker to miss a rushing defender
  • Fixed an issue where motioning an outside receiver would cause inappropriate defender coverage swapping vs. specific coverages
  • Added functionality for user-controlled defenders to successfully Hit Stick the ball carrier immediately following a Block-Shed
  • Tuning to reduce reaction-time penalty for Linebackers with the LB Style Trait set to ‘Cover;’ this tuning should make coverage LB’s react quicker in reading running plays and moving towards their run fits

Playbook Updates

  • Blocking improvements:
    • Made several adjustments to improve blocking on plays like Inside Zone Split, RPO Read WR Screen, PA Jet Sweep, and RPO Peek
    • Improved Left Tackle blocking on Pass plays in certain formations to address an issue where the blocker would miss an Edge Pass Rusher
  • Updated Out Routes in compression formations and the Tight End’s route in RPO Y Peek so the releases are cleaner and the routes are more effective
  • Addressed issues where the Halfback and Tight End would sometimes run into each other on plays like Zone Split Lead, Alert X Smoke, and RPO Alert Jailbreak Screen
  • Alignment improvements:
    • Strong Safety in Cover 3 is in better position to play outside runs vs Wing formations
    • Adjusted Wide Receiver splits in Spread formations to improve spacing and timing
  • Updated the Halfback’s run hole on 0 1 Trap plays which gives the Halfback more space away from the Defensive Lineman who’s being trapped

Franchise Updates

  •  Face of the Franchise Updates:
    • General stability improvements
    • Fixed an issue with several abilities not unlocking or equippable when they should be
    • Fixed an issue in the WR Drills causing users to sometimes fail the drill even after making the appropriate catch
  • Franchise Updates:
    • The first set of Franchise updates announced post-launch have arrived, check out the Madden NFL 21 Gridiron Notes for more info on the following changes:
      • Dev Trait Regressions: Star, Superstar, and Superstar X-Factors will now have desired counts that are treated as the “correct” amount of each Dev Trait in your Franchise. Eligible players will be regressed in priority order until the target is met. These targets can be changed via Commissioner settings.
      • X-Factor Customization: We brought over our functionality from player mode that allows the player to alter the Superstar and Superstar X-Factor abilities on their players inside of Core Franchise as both a coach and an owner.
      • Playoff Bracket: Starting Week 13 of the regular season, there will be a Things To Do item that takes you to the current playoff picture if the season ended that week including the seeding for each team that would be in the playoffs. Once Wild Card week begins, the playoff bracket will also have the scores of all games that have been played, and the box score available by clicking on the matchup. There will also be a way to access this bracket through the “schedule” button, with a new tile labeled “Playoff Picture”.
      • Career Stats: One of the top community requests for several years now, we added the week matchup and result of the game to each player’s season stats via their player card. We also added what team a player finished their season with on each year of their career stats via their player card.
      • Retirement Improvements: In Re-Sign Players week, there will now be a Things To Do item that takes you directly to the Transactions screen sorted to Retired players to provide a quicker look into who is riding off into the sunset.
    • General stability improvements
    • Fixed an issue where the user was sent back to the Things to Do tab when exiting out of a screen even if they were on a different tab

The Yard Updates

  • New Feature: Yard Play-A-Friend.
    By popular demand, you can now play against your friends in The Yard.How it works:
    0) Select the Play-A-Friend tile in The Yard hub.
    1) Pick a venue and party size and build out your party as you normally would.
    2) Make sure to tell your friend’s team what venue and party size they should select.
    3) At the prompt, both party leaders set the same matchmaking password. This can be anything you want, just make sure you both enter it exactly the same.
    4) … (Magic of the internet happens here)
    5) Play against your friend and make sure they know you are better than them.NOTE: You won’t earn progression from Play-A-Friend games.

Superstar KO Updates

  •  Stability and UI improvements for Superstar KO Endless Run.

Presentation Updates

  • Added functionality for users to toggle the Passing and Kicking Feedback Text on/off via the ‘Visual Feedback’ setting in the settings menu

    I remember they have used the patch method in the past, and unfortunately many people ended up with corrupt saves.

    One big issue that T4 pointed out on Twitter is that changing a player's SS/XFactor traits does not appear in the Transaction Log so people can edit their traits and the only way to know what happened is if you had them previously written down.
    Can also confirm update applies to offline franchise saves. Ability customization, dev trait management, career stats, UI not reverting to "Things to Do" tab when exiting a screen all are available in my offline franchise.
    After the update was applied and I loaded the offline save, I received a prompt stating that the save file was being patched. Takes a minute, but it does get applied to offline saves.

    Restarting my franchise because I was only 2 games into the season with the Jets, and yeah, I'm not putting myself through that kind of torture.

    So if you edit an ability, it doesn’t show up in the transactions tab. Online leagues are gonna have a field day with this

    Yeah, you can't now and could not previously.
    Which is a low-key pain. Several times, I've looked at the scenario, then ended up logging off before playing that game. When I come back to it, I don't always remember the scenario, or sometimes even that a scenario is in play.
    A scenario tracker/indicator in-game would go a long, long way as a quality of life thing.
    Unless someone else does it first, I'm going to reset a franchise and let you all know if it allows me to name the owner again. It's been broke for weeks, lately.

    Not being a league player myself, can you expand on why that's a big deal? I don't see it personally...to me, it feels like if the player has the ratings for the ability, what would be the purpose of restricting them to what EA randomly rolled for the player?
    I get that it flies in the face of EAs statement that they "want to empower commissioners to define the playing experience for their leagues"...it's odd to say that and then not put a toggle on this, I agree...but what's the gameplay impact I'm missing?
    Note: I'm not challenging you that there IS a gameplay impact...I just don't know what that is, and I'm curious.

    There are certainly some abilities that are "better" than others. I think the concern is seeing players basically all gravitating to the same handful of abilities...which basically puts the game back into M20 territory with a small number of abilities being used...which hurts diversity and a little bit of that "luck of the draw". With no easy manner of monitoring it...it's going to be problematic for those in online leagues.

    There's Abilities that are "the best" that everyone will now be able to put on their players. Escape artist for QB, human joystick for hb, lurker for LB, etc. This really sucks.

    In yesterday's world, those abilities were still better....it's just that some people randomly got them, and others didn't. How competitive you were was a matter of a one-time dice roll that you really couldn't manage; there's no "get gud" for dice.
    In today's world, that playing field has been tilted more toward user management and away from random luck.
    Again, this is your world, not mine....Josh's point regarding long-term league diversity is well taken. Just kind of kicking the idea around for myself.

    That's fair. To me, that's what Josh was talking about with the long-term diversity....if every player can potentially have an ability, signing/resigning one that already has it (or trading for, or whatever) becomes less important. I guess I was thinking more in terms of balance between users than balance among players...and you're right, that's not desirable.

    A nice add that wasn't in the notes. Points no longer appear next to FA bids. I really like this addition. In real life we often know who is winning negotiations, but we don't know the numbers. Look at what AB did to get a deal in Tampa when everyone was sure he was signing with Seattle.

    Love that addition. You might really overpay for someone which happens in free agency all the time.

    I was wondering this too. I can't find this in any settings in Franchise Mode so I wonder if it wasn't added. I could just be missing it also. Hard to tell. I really want to use this since I wondered if I used coach suggestions it would start forcing more varied plays to be called.
    I played a game and a half with the new patch and had played 5 or 6 with the old. The CPU QB's are def completing way more of their passes and have way less inaccurate throws. This seems to be carrying over from the last patch. Didn't notice much difference beyond that but it was a small sample.
    I feel like I am getting slideritis.
    My pass rush is also way less than it was since 1.13. I think less sacks are good but it seems the way they have done it was to jack up the CPU O-Line rather than having the ball get out of the QB's hand quicker. I feel like lowering the throw out of sack chance in one of the patches led to higher sack totals which has led to them making the O-line almost impenetrable. And The few times I get through the QB gets it out before I get close. I feel like in the past they were getting pressure and you'd get the throw out of sack. I hardly see it all anymore. Some games not once for the CPU. That is why I liked the OOB QB play and passing game so much more. Unless I lower the CPU Acc much lower and then you get more of the dreaded lack of shots downfield.

    You didn't miss it...I'm not seeing it either. I looked in every CFM and main menu settings option, as well as going through the first couple steps of starting a new franchise (both cloud and offline). It's not there.

    Correct me if I'm wrong but aren't you only allowed 3 x-factors on the field at 1 time?
    For some reason I weirdly thought that this was just going to be an update for Franchise only. After reading the notes, speaking only about the solo player experience, the gameplay tuning might end up being sneaky good.

    Avalanche is gated behind OVR 95 Run Stopper MLB in Franchise, and I don’t think other positions can get it in Franchise at all.
    I’ve got one guy in my league who wants Avalanche on Isaiah Simmons; we discovered this morning that he’s quite a ways off from that threshold.
    If your league somehow ends up with four 95+ LBs on one team I’d venture to guess something else has gone wrong well beforehand lol.

    I've got to give it to them on this one.
    I underestimated how much I'd like being able to turn breakout scenarios off and to limit the number of players in the league at various development levels. There are some real long-term benefits to being able to make these moves & customize your league as you see fit.
    To my eye, there weren't any game-breakers in the game and a half or so I played thus far, which is always encouraging.

    Hallelujah! This is all i've asked for several years since I don't know when. I don't think Madden of all games ever implemented this while other sports games all pretty much have. I mean, tennis of all games had this.
    Finally! I've been asking them every year over and over and can't believe they actually did it. Wow. I can die happy now lol
    After just one Franchise game, being able to change the SS/XF abilities paid huge dividends. Changing the abilities for my team and my opponent to get rid of the "User Centric" abilities and adding some others ones instead that helps the non User controlled players be more fearsome created a much more dynamic game.
    Being able to control the number of XF/SS/S players in you league is of course nice. This along with the reduced number of non normal dev trait players in the draft classes this year should go a long way in keeping the abilities from proliferating out of control. It will be interesting to see what the criteria is for having a player drop down a dev trait.
    I hadn't given much thought to the playoff picture bracket, but seeing it come up in week 14 was a nice touch although they made a mistake by not having the team records appear on that screen.
    I saw my first offside penalty of Madden 21, I had assumed that it had somehow become disabled with the removal of jumping the snap, so it was good that is seems to have returned.
    I didn't see any new gameplay bugs, so I expect this will be how the game plays until the new gen version drops in 3 weeks, unless they make some emergency tuning for competitive play of course.
    Not sure how to post an image but in my existing franchise with the Bears, I simmed the second half after being down 27-3 and I won 303(three hundred and three) 27! Couldn't believe my eyes in the first half when I threw a pick 6 to Russell Wilson!
    I have tagged EA into the image on Twitter though.
    Great news patch went to my offline franchise that a relief. I hope it is a different issue but played 2 games last night and after both games when I left the game to go back to franchise game crashed with an error 2 out of 2 games, no result on both games when I got back into chise. Hope it is back to normal today after being turned off.....
    Of course they would screw up the new stat pages. Appears HOU and TEN are the only ones that are messed up.

    I was in Week 15 when the patch installed and it's crazy how a little thing like the playoff picture screen makes me happy.

    Agreed. Imagine if they could integrate this into the presentation in-game where we would here the announcers talking about the playoff picture and maybe stating some simple facts like "if they win they clinch a wildcard spot" or something moderately generic. I don't expect them to have dialogue for something like "If Tenessee wins, and the Colts lose and the Broncos and Steelers tie then they clinch the 3rd wildcard spot". But something to make the game you are currently engaged in feel like part of a bigger picture would be nice.

    From what I understand - and what was stated from Josh when I asked the same question - is they do not but would love to hear someone else’s input.
    God this company, man....still sitting here with my copy of Madden 20, thinking about whether or not this Madden 21 franchise update might justify a purchase (especially if the game goes on sale in a week or two for Black Friday) and they broke stuff with this minor update that took 4 months. Season stats screen got jacked up? Tennessee as Houston, Houston as Tennessee? Are you kidding me? Do you QA ANYTHING you do at all, EA?

    The CPU has not gotten scenarios since they were introduced. And you can darn well be sure that given all the crying over CFM, that they would've made a huge deal about a "new and improved scenario system" if it was added.

    The CPU has not gotten scenarios since they were introduced. And you can darn well be sure that given all the crying over CFM, that they would've made a huge deal about a "new and improved scenario system" if it was added.
    Yeah that's what I figured. It's good for online leagues that are full at least. For solo, I'll be keeping it off.
    U know, it’s funny how amazing it is to see a playoff bracket in this game. Lol. I’m in week 16 of a season, and there it was, in all of its glory. It looks amazing (simply because it hasn’t been here forever!). I don’t know about everyone else, but this is something I’ve wanted for years just to have a quick, easy look at who else made the playoffs, and/or current playoff races. Just to see who I might face in the off-season and super bowl. That’s it. It’s just that easy. And, from a programming standpoint, I really can’t believe this took much.

    Does any player have superbowl win and the year it was won in their award history Or do it show it now with the patch update..Because we did ask for the team names ti show of the player have played or playing for. But we also we was saying it needs to show in the players cards of hiw many SB or probowls and the year..SB M.V.P in there award history.As of now its still missing this and it should be part of this patch it goes wit the names u out in of the Team Abbreviations..So adding this would've made all the sense..
    Just checked must be a franchise bug because in play now check & main menu roster they are accurate

    Previous years total tackles stats are incorrect...be len that way for 5 years now lol. EA is counting assisted tackles twice to come up with their total tackles in previous seasons. Be better EA.

    Ugh. Man. Before going live with a big update, don't they ever QA this stuff? At my work, this would be unacceptable and we'd get our hands slapped big time for this.
    I can't remember which thread I originally posted in, but I can confirm two things after this patch:
    I still can't name an owner for offline CFM.
    But
    They did finally fix the camera hanging high glitch. When calling audibles, the camera had been staying out wide and required you to manually get back to whatever angle you wanted. This is greatly appreciated.

    Anybody who's worked with QA, or even executed test scripts for a moderately complex piece of software, can think of about a dozen ways a scenario like this could get missed, just off the top of their heads.
    Or get caught, but get relegated to a known issues list (rather than holding up an entire release) due to the scope and impact.
    Point out the bug, by all means. Lament the impact. But the histrionics over "QA" every single patch can get a little stale.
    I apologize in advance for not reading the actual gameplay updates, lol, but just wanted to quickly mention what I’m seeing. The run blocking is WAY better, imo. This includes special teams. Players don’t look as confused as before. I don’t think this was part of the update, but man, I’m really liking what I’m seeing in run blocking. The overall flow of running plays feels more realistic, imo. And, for me, it’s not overpowering. If the cpu calls the right D, I’m still taking losses, but the blockers just look so much less confused. They’re actually blocking the players I expect them to block which makes reading running and cutback lanes fun.
    RAC catches WORK NOW!!! Idk about u, but RAC catches have NOT worked as advertised for me. My players were still doing a hard ‘true step’ after pressing RAC catch and trying to steer them. This always resulted in a short gain with a quick tackle because the true step is such a long animation. I just threw a drag on the goaline to TE and RAC caught it and he smoothly kept running to the sideline and then i smoothly transitioned him to turn upfield WITHOUT a true step hop. It was truly a thing of beauty.
    And, while I haven’t returned any kicks for TDs yet, the blocking here looks way better, imo, as well. Again, it’s that lack of confusion or effort that the players used to have. Now, they all look like they’re blocking with intent AND they’re blocking the CORRECT player. Lol.
    So, again, didn’t read the article, I’m playing a game right now, but just had to post something because this is like 2-3 games in and I’m loving the blocking now. And, the RAC thing is also great. I was having Ridley running drags, giving him a nice RAC type pass, pressing RAC catch, and watching him take a HARD true step and get tackled instantly was just killing me. Lol. That seems to have been resolved (until the next patch, I’m sure ).

I guess they added the functionality to turn that info off and based off of my setting for on screen indicators, the game did it automatically. It's nice to have an almost completely clean screen.
    I guess it ultimately doesn't matter in the end, but I would really like to know how much of the improvement in the game was just the title update and how much is because of playing on a more powerful system. There are a lot of little small improvements that make the game play so much better now and I'm wondering if it just because of the hardware.

    After updating, I continued with a Franchise game but now I consistently get a crash right after a CPU vs CPU game in which I start with supersim on fast speed, then go to slow speed for the last couple of minutes of the game. After the game is finished and I select exit the game, it crashes without saving the played game. It happens consistently. If I play the full game at fast speed, no problem.
