Sonic Racing: Crossworlds just got a new playable character, and one that’s known for his temper. Red from the iconic Angry Birds franchise is making his way into Sonic Racing: Crossworlds. It’s all thanks to SEGA’s acquisition of Rovio Entertainment (the original creators of Angry Birds) back in 2023.
SEGA also released a trailer showcasing Red in all his glory alongside his trusty ride, The Super Roaster, and fun emotes. Additionally, three Angry Birds-themed songs are also in the game. To top it all off, there is going to be an “Angry Birds Festival” in the game from April 16 to April 19. And, it’s all part of the Angry Birds Content Drop that SEGA announced on X.
It’s refreshing to see SEGA adding characters from other franchises outside of their own verse. Angry Birds is a massively popular franchise, and while it may not be the biggest today, there was a time the game was on top of the world. This addition will also likely bring fans of Angry Birds to the game as well.
What This Means For Sonic: Racing Crossworlds

Sonic Racing: Crossworlds managed to surprise everyone on release. The game turned out to be quite good. The dynamic levels, where you go through different dimensions while racing, were a cool concept and one that stuck with players. The driving and overall gameplay felt really good. However, the character roster was always a bit limited.
The “SEGA-verse” isn’t as big as Nintendo or other verses. Most people just know a couple of characters like Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Shadow. So, while the game has a decent number of characters, the casual fans just aren’t familiar with them.
This is why the addition of Red adds familiarity to the game. It’s a character that pretty much everybody knows, even those who don’t game much. And, it might just give this game the boost it needs to compete with the likes of Mario Kart World. Additionally, it doesn’t have to stop at Red; the game could also feature more characters from the Angry Birds world, like Chuck and Bomb.
Moreover, SEGA has a lot of loved franchises like Persona, Virtua Fighter, and Yakuza, from which it can take characters. This might be wishful thinking, but Sonic has been in Mario games, so there is a minuscule chance that characters from Nintendo could make their way into this game.
Overall, if SEGA continues to widen its roster with popular characters like these, it’s likely to get more players into the game. Because the core gameplay is quite fun, and if you add fun characters on top of it, it will become much better.
Sonic Racing: Crossworlds is available on pretty much all platforms, and Red is already in the game. If you haven’t taken him out for a spin in his Super Roaster, see what he is all about.
