Future GPX Cyber Formula Spiral Revealed, Continues Legendary Racing Anime Series

What we know so far.

Future GPX Cyber Formula is a game series that has been around since the Super Nintendo days, and after nearly an 8-year gap, the series is coming back. The newest game in the series, Future GPX Cyber Formula Spiral, is being developed by Project YNP. They are the modern publisher behind the series’ revival, and the last game they made for the franchise was Future GPX Cyber Formula Sin Vier (2018)

While there’s no official teaser or gameplay trailer out yet, there is an announcement over at Project YNP’s website. It’s quite a barebones announcement, as it simply mentions the title and the fact that “a new game is coming.” However, we do know that the game will feature a brand new story that will be led by the studio director, Mitsuo Fukuda.

Between Cyber Formula Spiral and Screamer, the drift-heavy racer with a visual-novel story style, arcade racers are making a bit of a comeback. Now, these games may not be as mainstream, but that’s also why they are important to talk about. We have a severe lack of good arcade racers these days, and these unique titles prove there are still passionate developers out there.

With that said, we do hope that this game is better than the previous entry, SIN VIER. While the game was a technical triumph with great VR support and a brilliant sense of speed, the story was lackluster. The game lacked a soul and interesting characters, aspects that are important to retro games and anime series. If you’re unfamiliar with the franchise, Speed Racer is probably the best comparison.

Now, the fact that Mitsuo Fukuda is returning does instill some confidence. He was the original director behind the anime series. With Fukuda at the helm, we can probably expect a deeper narrative with the intense rivalries the series is known for. The game is still in early stages of development, but we hope they reintroduce functional pit stops, fuel management, and weather-dependent tires. Above all else, it needs to have a unique art style to make it truly stand out.
