Pokémon Champions: How To Use Articuno

Become a master!

If you’re an old Pokémon buff, the name Articuno is going to sound really familiar. Before all these new legendaries, mega evolutions, and shiny Pokémon, we had the legendary bird trio. Moltres, Zapdos, and Articuno. Safe to say, a lot of players are looking at ways to incorporate the champion of the Arctic into their team, but it’s easier said than done.

Unlike Charizard or Tyranitar, Articuno isn’t a meta-defining Pokémon right now. There aren’t a lot of decks that are built around her, but if used correctly, she can counter some of the strongest Pokémon in Pokémon Champions. So let’s take a look at how you can use Articuno in your team.

What Is Articuno’s Main Role?

To unlock her maximum potential, you need to know what the Pokémon is good at. Articuno has a high Special Defense stat (125), allowing it to absorb special attacks. This makes it an optimal tank when facing Pokémon that thrive on special attack damage.

A great example of this is Archulodon in rain teams. If you’re able to mitigate its Electro Shot, you nullify much of the team’s damage. This will require you to position Articuno correctly. Since Archulodon can attack instantly once Drizzle is used, you’ll want Articuno to take the brunt of that attack.

Now that you know Articuno’s core role, here’s the best moveset to complement those stats:

  • Freeze-Dry
  • Roost
  • Haze
  • Tailwind

Freeze-Dry will be your main source of damage for Articuno. It is an Ice/Special-type move with 100% accuracy, and is super-effective against Water-types. This means that using this against Pelipper can significantly reduce a rain team’s effectiveness. You can also use it to punish other water-type Pokémon who are misused.

Next, you have Roost. Roost is a defensive ability that allows Articuno to regenerate health. This is quite important since you want Articuno to absorb as much damage as possible. If you’re playing it as a main tank, this is essential; otherwise, your damage dealers will take massive chunks of damage.

Defog/Haze and Tailwind are more supportive moves. Haze allows you to reset an opponent’s stats in case they’ve received any stat boosts, while Tailwind doubles the Speed stat of the user and all other Pokémon in the user’s party for three turns. This is good for almost every type of deck since Speed decides which Pokémon attacks first. Be careful of trick room teams, however, since Tailwind can be counterintuitive there.

You’ve got down the basics: the role and the abilities, but how do you play the Pokémon in an actual battle? Well, the main way is to play it as part of a Snow team. Once Snow is active on the field, Articuno will receive a 50% defense boost, making it tankier than before. This also minimizes the chances of it getting one-shot by a physical attack, since it lacks high physical defense.

If you’re not running a Snow team, you’ll want to use its Pressure ability coupled with Roost. Pressure doubles the Power Points your opponent’s moves require. This means that high PP moves like Fire Blast or Stone Edge are much harder to execute. Roost, on the other hand, protects Articuno from fatal damage and constantly heals it.

Regardless of which strategy you use, it is always good to use it as part of a Snow team. Pair it with Mega Froslass or Alolan Ninetales to unlock its max potential. The only play you need to be aware of when playing Articuno in Pokémon Champions is going up against Rock-type Pokémon. Articuno is x4 weak to Rock, meaning physical Rock attacks like Rock Slide can result in instant KOs. This is why positioning is essential when playing it as a tank.
