Putting Together a Meta Team in Pokémon Champions

Pokémon Champions is young, having just been released in April, yet the competitive community is already buzzing. When you’re starting, Pokémon like Tyranitar, Aggron, and Whimsicott are strong contenders. However, as things get more competitive, that’s where Meta picks obviously shine more.

Obviously, there’s quite a lot of hype around this title. However, a majority of the playerbase is still figuring stuff out. This is why it’s the perfect time to do your homework for putting together a meta team. The game is in its early stages, and there’s a lot to experiment with, but we already know which Pokémon are the best performers. Here’s a look at the most Meta Team in Pokémon Champions.

Recruitment in Pokémon Champions works in a few ways: you can recruit from a random selection once every 22 hours, or transfer your favorites over from Pokémon Home. Regardless, it will be tough to put together a Meta team straight off the bat, especially without spending money.

In Champions, you have the option to play either singles or doubles. Both modes require you to choose a team of 6 Pokémon, but in singles, you choose 3 out of 6 to play 1v1, while in doubles, you choose 4 out of 6 to face off in 2v2 matchups. Here’s the most meta team in Pokémon Champions, at the time of writing:

  • Incineroar
  • Kingambit
  • Garchomp
  • Espathra
  • Dragonite
  • Torkoal

Both Incineroar and Kingambit are the strongest doubles choices, and we’ll get to them a bit more when we talk about doubles matchups. For now, just know that Incineroar excels at field control through its Intimidate ability, while Kingambit acts as a bulky power powerhouse that can stand tall when allies fall.

Glimmora has balanced stats with 55 attack and 90 defense. The key ability is toxic debris, which sets toxic spikes automatically when hit by a physical move. This Pokémon pressures opponents immediately with hazards and spreads damage. It forces switches, chips bulky threats, and clears its own hazards with Mortal Spin.

Whimsicott is another strong pick. This one has 67 attack and 85 defense. Its key ability is Prankster, which applies debuffs and supports moves like Tailwind priority. Whimsicott is one of the fastest Prankster users available. It uses Tailwind to outspeed the entire opponent team, provides redirection, and even pairs with your sweepers to help win speed ties.

Garchomp is another strong contender with 130 attack and 95 defense. Garchomp offers high attack and speed with powerful spread moves, making it a constant threat in doubles. As long as Garchomp doesn’t get threatened by Ice Types, it’s a threat to most meta teams.

Espathra is a strong overall pick with balanced stats of 60 attack and 60 defense. Its key ability is Speed Boost, and once paired with Calm Mind, it’s a big threat using stored power. You can also play Espathra as a support, making it a flexible choice.

Dragonite has some seriously impressive stats with 134 attack and 95 defense. Multiscale lets you halve damage when at full HP. You can play it as a setup sweeper or tank, and it’s also extremely hard to revenge kill.

Torkoal is a defensive threat as it has 140 defense paired with 85 attack. Its key ability, Drought, sets the sun automatically on entry and sets up for eruption. Torkoal can be used as a bulky support to throw opponents off.

Most Meta Pokémon For Doubles

Double is the much more balanced format in Pokémon Champions. It’s also the primary and official tournament and competitive format. Here, Incineroar and Kingambit are top-tier choices.

Incineroar is a strong Pokémon with 115 attack and 90 defense. It offers excellent field control with decent bulk and speed. Its key ability is to intimidate, which lowers both opponents’ attack on entry, making it overpowered for doubles. Incineroar plays well with bulky teammates such as its companion in this list, Kingambit.

Up next, we have Kingambit, who is a powerhouse with 135 attack and 120 defense. It has 9 resistances and 2 immunities, making it the best pick for your meta team. Its key ability is Supreme Overload, which gains massive attack boosts when allies are fainted. Another one of its abilities is Defiant, which allows it to benefit from common attack-lowering strategies. If you want to dominate in doubles and get the better of your opponent, then go for either one of those when playing doubles.

However, keep in mind that while both of these are strong Pokémon on their own, they are not the most effective pairing. That’s mainly because they have the same weaknesses. For Incineroar, most people choose Sinistcha as the partner for the healing ability. As for Kingambit, it benefits strongly from Dragapult for speeding up the offensive pressure.
