NFL 2K5 super fan LostsouL (packers on the OS forums), is hard at work with the rest of a team working on an NFL 2K5 mod that is updating the graphics, textures, menus, and the overall look of a timeless classic. The team is first working on the Green Bay Packers, and the Packers are about 90 percent done at this point.
LostsouL also shared an update for the San Francisco 49ers a couple days ago.
NFL 2K5 Mod Information
Here is some more information directly from LostsouL about the mod:
With the help of the community developer TopazTK, we now have a more robust way of dumping textures from the PCSX2 emulator. The plug-in is still in development, but a small team of us in the NFL2K5 discord community are already busy refreshing textures. While the project is very ambitious, I believe the team will have something as legendary as NFL2K5 itself when finished.
A few in-game examples which will include uniforms, stadiums, menus, player photos and anything else the Mod team puts in-scope.
The PCSX2 emulator LostsouL mentions is very popular for PlayStation 2 games, and it’s a very easy way to play roms (of games you already own). You should not be at all intimidated by this emulator as it’s very easy to use. I have showed it off before to play the original NFL 2K, for example. You can find directions about how to download the emulator and install NFL 2K5 all over the internet. You don’t even really need an amazing PC or anything to run it either. Plus, once you have the emulator installed, finding updated rosters and such is not hard at all — LostsouL will point you in the right direction if you need any assistance in the OS thread (spoilers, easiest thing to do is join the NFL 2K Discord or head to this forum topic here).
I mention all of this because this mod will use PCSX2 1.6 and won’t be available on normal consoles.
LostsouL is also looking for help to speed up the pace of this update:
“Anyone with experience with photo editing and the time and interest to join the Mod team is welcome. Be sure to drop a line or DM me in the discord community.”
Going through some of the updates you will find, here is a look at updated Lambeau Field:
You can see a new scoreboard bug to update the title to NFL 2K21:

While we continue to wait for any news about what 2K might have planned for a future football game, it’s always nice to have some more ways to play the classics. Plus, it’s the offseason now, so it’s that time to experiment with some other football games if you’re bored with the latest Madden. Big ups to LostsouL and the mod crew working on this, here’s to hoping it all comes together.
