NBA 2K18 Hands-On Impressions - Defense Part 1 of 2 (DmanUnt2014)
DmanUnt2014 has posted some more NBA 2K18 hands-on impressions, from his recent trip to 2K. In this video, he goes over defense (part 1 of 2). Some details taken from the video are seen below, thanks to Smirkin Dirk.
- He feels he has more control. You arent being moved around.
- The game allows you to stay on someone’s hip.
- Speed and strength matter when playing D.
- Steal spamming has been nerfed.
- More manual control about pick and rolls. He brought up the example of flicking the stick t get in position to go over picks. Brick wall nerfed.
- Screens have no black hole effect.
- Loose ball/pass awareness is much improved. Fights for loose balls.
- Intense D is more effective when used with better defenders.
- Right stick warping on D gone.
- Defender has to be looking at the play to know when to help.

Any chance someone elaborates on "screens have no black hole effect"?
Liking intense D being more effective with better defenders. I would love to use the Spurs and really FEEL the difference with Kawhi to everyone else.
Also (heard this before from Brian) but the defender having to look at the play sounds promising. I'd imagine weaker defensive awareness players now will actually have a realistic liability factor - adds to the strategy (subbing in for offense/defense). Great (if implemented right).
And finally, staying on someone's hip. Could be a game changer for the dribble drive game. Intrigued about this in a big way.

I think he's talking about pro-am mode when defenders always seemed to get sucked into a screen animation even if they arent close to the screener.

We've heard a few snippets that suggest good and bad defenders will be a bigger thing. I think we'd all love being forced to keep bad defenders off the floor in certain matchups and being forced to sign defensive specialists.
Yep I think we're all tired of the constant bump backs.
I use OKC primarily and can already picture the fun I'll have with using PG and Roberson. Roberson being a complete offensive liability will really force me to think about his usage. Love that.
To me, next step would be working on player weight/momentum/foot planting etc. This will affect pull up game, driving game in major ways.
We'd really be on the way to some amazing hoops gaming then.

Apparently you can warp to somebody by using the rightstick in a bail out type of way
yup if u push up on the right stick when playing off ball d you can warp to stay attached to a player or warp to push him off his route.
i discovered this accidentally on pro am but can imagine it works in H2H too

I believe the black hole effect is literally the suction into the screen.
in 2k17 its completely unavoidable, while in the vid he explains that you can evade screens with the right stick, and lessen their impact.
this is a huge addition and could help so much with defending the PnR and can make pro-am so much more enjoyable.

No, this feature will stay in the game because it is useful and "real".
What we talking about is that : https://twitter.com/wolf__74/status/891822267650461696
As you can see in the vid, he is stucked in the screen and his player is wide open for the 3. But with the right stick, he magically frees himself and slide towards his opponent to contest the shot..
I find it 10X more enjoyable to minimize the video and just listen to the words. Why don't they just write an article or something? I have zero interest in watching some random Pro-AM game.
:cavalry:
Yes it works best with faster guys but if you e ever thought to yourself how the heck a guy closed out to you that was probably the reason why

It's not the ideal defensive position but let's say you have Kawhi on your hip. That's different than having Kyle Korver on your hip and should be represented. Basically a PG like Jose Calderon should rarely have guys in his hip if he's not in the pick and roll, but a guy like Kyrie should have guys struggling every game
There's a move Kyrie does where he comes off a pick then slows down to feel your body then explodes to the rim for a layup
So I also have to wonder if the stop and go is a thing in 2k18. A lot of great PGs use it off screens and such

He also didn't really speak about any of the other defensive AI issues from last year's game (poor defensive rotations, losing man after made basket, poor transition defense and not "realistically" double teaming on bad match ups).
Hoping we hear more about these issues and they will determine if I purchase day 1 (or later on sale).

Everything looks good, I'm sure it'll feel good in the Prelude demo.
I've been balling all of my life basically, And I've alway felt that the way the dribble drive was handled on 2K has been completely awful. Stone wall stops are rare and reserved for only the best defenders in the NBA. This is why i'm also glad they mentioned a real difference in on ball defensive skill between players.
I want to really feel the difference in who's guarding me on the perimeter. I wan't to feel that helplessness when i have lesser defenders guarding someone like Russ. Of course all of that means not a thing if the defensive rotations aren't done properly, so let's just keep our fingers crossed on that one.

That's not warping . That's actually a feature in the controls . That's just grabbing and denying position especially on cuts .

Lol glad it's removed but it was useful to combat that damn animation brickwall forces you in.
It creates confusion and easy baskets for the opponent especially the CPU.

Dude yes. I was very disappointed to hear that the rotations on D haven't been addressed. Get ready for high FG percentages again this year, constantly beating the CPU's defense with only one pass.

He said he'll be making a defensive AI video after discussing it with OG. That is coming soon.

I'm so glad this is removed . That junk is mad cheesy . A 7'3 glass cleaner was going this and he was getting chasedown blocks and all. He finished with close to 15 blocks . Some around the perimeter.
The game literally slides/glides/ moves you to the ball
