Madden NFL 21 Zone Coverage Patch Coming This Week

The Madden NFL 21 zone coverage patch is scheduled to arrive this week, as revealed earlier today on Good Morning Madden. Kraelo mentioned on the broadcast that the patch might not arrive on all platforms at the same time or even the same day, so I wanted to give everyone a heads up.

As always, when the official patch notes arrive, we’ll get those online.

Perhaps I missed this elsewhere, but is there more granular information available about what they're doing to coverage than "zone coverage?"

No, but they typically post detailed patch notes when the patch arrives, so we'll know more at that time.
I would like for them to fix the player physics for current gen...so player weight and momentum matter...also have players fight for extra yards like in real life no matter the size...i would like to see better tackling physics too
I haven’t played madden next gen since launch week.  Playing on all pro with my friend in a franchise (we aren’t super amazing at madden) we beat the cpu 78-17. Man, zone it’s all super underwhelming and all but useless.  Patch needed to come a week after launch, too little too late

Social media histrionics has pretty much ended any specific discussion of gameplay tuning by the dev team outside of the post release Gridiron Notes. Any discussion beforehand is going to be very generic.

Zone coverage is bad, but it sounds like you guys should be playing All Madden.

Most of it is for Multi-player User leagues, although if you listen to social media the large majority of those folks have abandoned the game already.

I don’t know if these guys are ever going to get it. The loud complainers this summer want an NFL approximation for Franchise; for example, more realistic scouting, a more living presentation, better CPU roster logic (they say they are addressing this one), and so on.

Hopefully Current gen sees some love as well. It still needs work done to pass coverage too.

I was going to ask if this patch was going to be available for current gen (PS4)?

This patch is for all platforms.

What about tight ends being impossible to cover?

Been that way for about 6 years, even if you draft hybrid safeties to cover them, nah no shot.
It’s bc TEs get a weird speed boost when making cuts on routes

This is great and all but what about man coverage? Are they just going to leave that untouched?

Seriously!! My DBs all ranked 83 and above get cooked every man coverage play. The cpu hikes the ball and IMMEDIATELY hits either outside receiver for a slant. Doesn’t matter if I adjust coverage to play inside or not they still get beat. Cpu almost NEVER throws outside passes or deep balls unless my DB is beaten off the line of scrimmage. CPU Qb ability to read the coverage in 0.1 seconds and make a 100% accurate throw to a WR hands of glue is UNCANNY

Its on another level on next gen - IMO. Not only are TEs getting open fairly easy but they break tackles like crazy. Stick has become a money play lol.

Stick is a nightmare play. I play HUM vs. CPU offline, and I have no idea what to do with this play, which is reliably called at the GL every time the CPU is down there. I can manually cover the stick route, but if I do, even while shading inside and down for the backside slant, I never get that route covered successfully, and if I don't cover the stick route manually, I can never get that route covered at all.
If there's a somewhat reliable call vs. this play, I'd love to know. I'm obviously not an actual DC, so there may be solutions I've not yet considered.
You defend Stick with Cover 4 Palms. The vertical gets taken by the outside CB, the out route is taken by the quarter flat, and the 3-rec hook can play the stick route.
Just ended an AI drive when they failed to convert 3rd and 2. I was all over the stick route so they went for the baby out and my slot got the PDEF.
It is january right? Maybe they should push the release for madden 22 to Nov. And fix this game already. This is crazy we are still dealing with zone coverage issues since madden 20 and its just now being addressed.

Confused now - is the zone coverage a part of the update coming tomorrow (which is also apparently the second franchise patch)? If so, why wasn't there anything about gameplay in the gridiron notes that were posted?

There will probably be another Gridiron Notes tomorrow for the Title Update that will talk about the gameplay changes, they may or may not reiterate the Franchise changes or may instead just refer to today's notes.

Absolutely 100% correct, it's so annoying. TE's and RB's get the most catches VS a user defense.
Definitely excited for the next gen patch but there is more than just the zone coverage that needs fixed imho, at least on AM. Hopefully it's a hefty patch with other fixes.

Thanks so much, Stinkubus. Very helpful, per usual.
The lone route I have a question about is the backside slant, which always seems to be open.
Technically, I think the play I'm referring to is the X Slant concept, which has a stick route by the TE but also that backside slant.
Is Palms still the call for those plays that combine the TE stick w/ the slant route?
    Again, much appreciated!

I think that's because most of us play cover 3, or some kind of deep zone, so much. I'm sure if you play cover 2 zone, cover 1 and and cover 0, we would see many more passes to WRs.

Usually when I call man coverage it’s the wrs that get thrown to (being it’s usually slants and we know how those work in this game)

Backside slants can definitely be a problem. They aren't going to get open early but if they get a chance to cross the field then they and the stick route can and will put the user in a bind.
Best course of action in this instance is to sink under the slant and concede the stick route. If you get a good break on the throw you've got a fighting chance of breaking it up anyway. Also a strong 4 man rush can still get through fast enough to prevent the slant from actually getting across the field.
Once you figure out how to play it you're going to be cursing the AI for calling it so much because the play ends up being a wasted down for them so often. I generate tons of failed completions, coverage sacks, user picks, etc.
Does this update bring back the Solo trips check in Cover 4 Quarters? I assume right now that that's not coming back until M22 at this point, but figured I'd check.

I’ve been testing this very idea with good results so far. None of us want to get beat over the top, and none of us want to get pushed around by the ground game. This is just natural for any football fan, coach and player. You don’t give an inch and you don’t get beat over the top. Never, ever.
    Right?
And look what most of us see as a result: AI that can’t or won’t run (we won’t let them, see above) and AI that can’t or won’t throw deep (we won’t let them, see above).
I think the AI running game being garbage is the same way. Before the AI will run effectively, or at all, you have to give it some breathing room. Stuffing the AI nine times in a row on their first nine rushing attempts is not how you get the AI to “run the ball better.” The AI runs the ball better when you successfully commit to stopping the pass.
    Etc.
Like I said, just something I’ve been looking at and results are nice so far.

It wasn't in the notes but sometimes stuff gets done and it's not there so you might want to test it.
I'm really digging split field this year against trips. If opponent has strong personnel or is a savvy play caller they can really make you pay for leaving your CBs on islands too much. It's a nice nerf, really. Quarters/Palms were both far too powerful as individual play calls in each of the last two games. There were some really good nerfs to inside zones too, but these did magnify some existing flaws in instances where players struggled to transition.
There were notes related to tuning some of these transitions. so some of these problems may be fixed. I'll be anxious to see what happens the next time the AI runs China against me when I've called Palms. The corner routes on some of these plays will dust literally any safety using any receiver because they get stuck.
These transitioning issues have been in the game since the introduction of match coverages. 90 ZCV could overcome it well enough in M19 although an opponent who knew about it could force you out of Palms against them because spamming it would've been more than viable.
M20 the zone ability or universal coverage did the trick. You could still get beat but sometimes the stars align and your guy made a play.
The nerfs to player movement exacerbated the issue the point it couldn't be overcome anymore, I reckon.
Like I never could understand how a pass defense such as cover 3-4 drop can stop the run so effectively! I play online and a majority of players rely on that defense along with pinch buck but not so much on nex gen but still, I have 7 linemen that get smacked by 3 and a LB when I should shred that play up no matter the team.
Like I said it happens every now and then online to the point it just overwhelmingly works to the point you’re ready to break your controller!
And guns trips inside zone is so OP and abused it’s not even funny against speed backs and power backs when you’re set up for the run game!
