Madden NFL 21 Trailer - Gameplay Controls & Mechanics

EA has released their new Madden NFL 21 gameplay trailer, captured from current generation platforms. The trailer showcases brand-new ball-carrier and d-line mechanics, realistic open-field tackling, new celebrations and more.

Madden NFL 21 will bring players closer to the field than ever before with an unrivaled football experience and innovative gameplay including improved ball-carrier mechanics for all out control in the running back and receiver positions and enhanced D-Line mechanics that make the pass rush positions more responsive, and fun to play. Plus, Realistic Open-Field Tackling will allow for clutch defensive stops, and new player-controlled celebrations after each game changing play combine to make the gridiron experience even more true to life. Outside of all the new control players will have in-game, some of the biggest changes will arrive in the overall authenticity and presentation with new on field camera shots and improved player awareness of their positioning and surroundings on the field.

“Our players are some of the most passionate in the world. They love Madden and we want to make sure we’re fulfilling what they’d like to see most in the game and delivering new features to up level each iteration,” said Seann Graddy, Executive Producer of Madden NFL 21. “In Madden NFL 21 there are a range of authentic new gameplay improvements that both our most engaged players and any fan of football will enjoy, plus unique experiences that will allow every player to live out their NFL fantasy with more still to come.”

Also new to Madden NFL 21 is Face of the Franchise: Rise to Fame, a playable documentary career campaign where players create themselves and play through their rise to fame from high school as a quarterback, to college where they can choose to pivot to running back or wide receiver, before experiencing the NFL Combine, NFL Draft, and cementing their legacy in the League. In addition, fans can expect more than 50 new Superstar X-Factor abilities, Live Playbooks 2.0, and a brand-new season of Ultimate Team content, along with other new features.

EA SPORTS will deliver distinct Madden NFL 21 experiences across current and next generation platforms. Through partnerships with Sony and Microsoft, EA SPORTS will offer Dual Entitlement, creating ways for players who purchase either an Xbox Series X or PlayStation 5 to upgrade their copy of Madden NFL 21 from prior generation Xbox One or PlayStation 4 platforms at no additional cost. This offer will be in place all the way through the Madden NFL 21 season, up to the release of Madden NFL 22, so players can upgrade whenever they first purchase their new console within that period. Offer exceptions apply. Physical discs cannot currently be used to upgrade to discless consoles. Visit ea.com/nextlevel for more information and tune into EA Play Live on June 18 at 4:00 PM PT for more news on the next generation.

Madden NFL 21 releases on August 28 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC via Origin and Steam. It will also make its debut on Google Stadia this winter. Fans that pre-order the Madden NFL 21 MVP Edition will receive 3-day early access, on August 25.

  1. The same old adding mechcanics on top of a broken foundation. Madden needs a new foundation. I need to know if next gen Madden 21 will be built from the ground up for the next gen consoles or will it be just a port.
I really didn't see much!  If running animations are still the same, then the game will probably look and feel the same. Hopefully,  I'm wrong!

I’ll save you the wait. It’s going to be a port or we would’ve heard by now.
New Skill Stick, Pass Rush moves on the right stick, user celebrations - didn't all of this already happen in the series multiple times over the years?
I know some of the animations are "new" as well as awareness. Will all 22 players use this awareness or just ball carriers? Like OL standing stupid after a blocker gets free etc. i feel like at this point we just get a refurbushed madden every year with a few updates added in to say its "different" but still basically the same game in the long run. I need to see more to raise my level from 1 to 2 *** given

Unfortunately they are just going to take the PC version and improve on that and the PC version is just an enhanced version of the consoles. Sigh
Seriously. Wtf is that screenshot. Steelers player has no emotion, looking dead straight with no contextual awareness, half *** arm out. Like what is going on

I have the sneaky feeling GalaxyMan (Frosty Dev) was hired more on the PC Security side than any advancements dealing with the game.
I’m glad I’m not into Sports video games as I used to be back in the day, as I see a rinse-repeat of M06 transition on the New Consoles.
I gotta say. The fact they didnt even improve the graphics or player models or add any accesories that people want says alot about the effort put into this game.
It's not hating to say this looks just like the year before.
I just want a respectable football sim that's all. I like Madden but its beyond time for something new.
Just hoping the effort went into next gen, to blow us all away. Because this ain't it.

Nothing about defensive Improvements other than new pass rush moves. Would have like to have seen something about coverage improvements. Zone is terrible. Maybe a quicker pass rush would alleviate this issue but they need to speed up QB throwing animations. Hopefully there's a lot more coming.

Not impressed. It’s unfortunate, but this is what Madden has become. It’s really not about creating an authentic football game anymore. It seems much more focused on the Money Grab Mode (MUT) and things that appeal to younger, easily influenced gamers.
The fact that “User controlled celebrations” is a top selling point for this game tells you everything you need to know. That kind of thing should be so low on the totem pole that it’s a nice little nugget you find out about when you play the game. But when nothing else is improved, I guess that’s all you can roll out with. It’s a shame
Not Impressed. Hopefully they will do a New rebuild from the ground up Next year. I don't plan to buy this years' slightly updated game.
Also, Franchise mode is so far behind NBA 2K's MyLeague. Hopefully they put some time into the Most Important Mode (IMO) soon.
A big reason i was excited about the new Xbox was to play Madden on it, but I may wait a year at this rate.
Madden 15 was a game changer graphics-wise. That Kap screenshot is still legendary. Maybe M22 will be the same for this new generation.
Looks the same...as someone who is burned out on Madden and have bought it every year since the early 90's, I'm not really all that interested in the next one. I quit playing the latest one a few months ago but recently I was interested in firing it back up....so I re-downloaded it....played it for 5 minutes and turned it off.
They need a new engine, new physics, stop charging me coins to play things like salary cap MUT, or something....I'm personally finding myself not all that interested in the game. Not to mention they're showing them same, tired, recycled cut scene promo they've been showing us for 20 years.
I feel like that same exact trailer could have been made out of Madden 20 footage and the new mechanics they mentioned are features they've touted in the past. I feel like we've gotten new ball carrier controls and mechanics multiple times this gen alone. New controls for dline are welcome and overdue but I didn't see any moves that looked new in the trailer.
And can we not waste time with celebrations? Is this something anyone cares about when there are far more important things that can be addressed?
The more I think about it. I really just hope it’s a let down because they had to put a lot of resources on the next gen madden game and so the current gen took a hit.
But with Madden’s track record, unfortunately the Next Gen version will likely be a port with the same legacy issues and a new shinier look to it.
The entire game needs to be blown up and rebuilt properly. It’s the only way.

Feels like that could be the case. Where next gen could just be a glossier version, then next year would be the year where we see the jump. I could see it next gen version just using Ray Tracing and other graphical effects and taking advantage of SSDs for this year.

Should've let the NCAA team start making Madden after that series was cancelled.

I actually think most of the team was moved over to Madden. Is a bit of a different gaming landscape from 2013 until now. Some sort of MUT would of dripped into NCAA guaranteed. Rex said that the NCAA had more leeway of were they wanted to make changes & were able to incorporate more creativity.

Didn't NCAA 14 already have an Ultimate Team mode?
One of the weaker trailers madden has ever had regardless of features. Here’s hoping next gen has a few added bells and  whistles other then just upgraded graphics  cause this feature set isn’t amazing me at all currently.
Same old cardboard sidelines and crowds I see, with cameramen pointing their camera's in a fixed location away from the action. I know some may say, "are you serious?" But stuff like this is so glaring and hokey that it's a distraction. I'm surprised we didn't see a sideline player walking backward.
I'm so tired of supporting EA's mediocrity.

They showed like 3 QB runs in this trailer and there wasn’t a single fumble, I’m shocked

I feel like it would be better for less QB fumbles while they’re scrambling because sometimes they fumble off of regular tackles

I have bought Madden from the 90s, and not a hard core gamer, just a middle aged guy who loves football. Honestly, this year I may pass. What came out today may mean something to hard core players, but these are tweaks. When the roster update is the biggest deal, I can live with last year's game. I LOVED the days of historical rosters (66 Packers vs. 72 Dolphins). Sadly, I may take a pass this year.

Bro we’ve been saying madden was going to “make the jump” for a decade now.

Just like we have been saying that Franchise will get some love for the past 15 years. Its nice to dream isn't it lol:frown:
I just think they're taking the Madden 25 approach. I don't expect much difference in next gen version outside of next gen console features like Ray Tracing and SSD benefits

Meanwhile NBA 2K 21 has a NEW Engine built from the ground up.. Smh..

While I wouldn't get my hopes up, all of this is from current-gen. Maybe, just maybe Next-gen Madden will be built from the ground up. Probably not, but we can hope.

    I didn’t notice the mouthpiece

Thanks, I didn't notice either. IIRC, wasn't Dustin/EquipmentGuru/Kane on record as saying they were pretty close to having them in for last year's game?

    I agree.
Not going to setting expectations too high, but I'm waiting until we hear about next gen first. Maybe they were able to do things with next gen that they can't with current gen. If we don't hear about it at EA Play Live, then it could be at a later date after launch.
I get the whole showing off current gen first. But since the visuals have peaked within last couple years and added features seems like the same thing they tout every couple years, it really brings out the "just a roster update, thing". At the very least for next gen, they have to set up foundation for a deep franchise early. If we turn on franchise and we see the same static repetitive lockeroom sequences with same layout, it'll be disappointing to say the least.

Yeah, maybe just because it's a new generation of consoles that means EA will start putting more effort into their game.
This was sarcasm, it's not happening. If they can easily move the game from the current consoles to the next, I don't expect any significant change whatsoever. You might see new menus or a new set up but Franchise will be largely unchanged.
Lol madden 20.5. I can’t believe the folks even have the dignity to charge $60 for this game. We were all in quarantine so how in the heck is this game complete? And I know franchise mode didn’t get touched. Pass.

Just got done watching that vid before you posted it lol. I agree with most of what he said. I mostly agree with the graphical part. Not sure about the quality based on trailer, but I do feel like Madden will push to hit most graphical marks year one. Sounds is something I have to hear to believe. While Spatialized Audio is a big deal, it's about the implementation. Will we really hear crowds and Sidelines erupt? Until they have the awareness of what is occuring during the play, that's when we will get more immersion.
