Madden NFL 20 Patch 1.18 Available - Gameplay, Franchise, Presentation Updates & More - Patch Notes Here

Madden NFL 20 game update 1.18 is available, featuring some X-Factor updates, which includes all abilities from previous title updates being supported in Franchise Mode. It also has some player likeness updates, along with some fixes for Franchise Mode, gameplay, presentation and more.

Check out the patch notes below and let us know what you’re seeing.

Key Highlights

  • New X-Factor Zone Ability:
    • Momentum Shift – Inspired by Ultimate Team Legend LB Ray Lewis, Momentum Shift will knock all opposing players out of the Zone in addition to wiping out all opponents’ Zone progress. Momentum Shift activates after 3 total successful hit-stick tackles on Arcade and Simulation, or 5 total on Competitive.
      • Franchise Requirements: Available as a Zone Ability for Field General MLB, Run Support FS and Run Support SS
      • Ultimate Team Requirements: Available as a Zone ability for Linebackers
  • All abilities from previous Title Update are now supported in Franchise Mode

Global Updates

  • General Stability and Connectivity improvements
  • NFL Player Likeness Updates:
    • Bears RB David Montgomery
    • Cowboys RB Tony Pollard
    • Titans P Brett Kern
    • Jets LB Blake Cashman
    • Fixed an issue with likeness of Buccaneers RB Peyton Barber
    • Updated hair for Falcons WR Julio Jones
  • Added a new version of Bears throwback helmet
  • Updated side stripes on Titans home and away and alternate uniforms
  • Updated referee hats to display ‘NFL 100’ logo

Franchise Updates

  • All abilities added in the previous update are now available in new and existing Franchise leagues:
    • Mossed – Inspired by Ultimate Team Legend WR Randy Moss, when players with this ability enter the zone, they will win contested catches regardless of coverage on passes of 55 yards or more (but does fall back to ratings formula when countered by defenders with Zoned Out, Man Up, Universal Coverage, Shutdown, and Zone Hawk abilities)
    • Lumberjack – Defensive ability, preventing broken tackles and can cause fumbles when using cut-stick tackles
    • Out My Way – Defensive ability that always wins vs. impact block attempts vs. WR’s, TE’s and RB’s
    • Goalline Stuff – Defensive ability for quick block sheds against 1-on-1 run blocks within 5 yds of the goalline
    • Inside Stuff – Defensive ability allowing quick block sheds against 1-on-1 run blocks on inside running plays
    • No Outsiders – Defensive ability allowing quick block sheds against 1-on-1 run blocks on outside running plays
    • Tank – Inspired by Ultimate Team Legend TE Rob Gronkowski, ball carriers with this ability break all hit-stick tackles (but does fall back to ratings formula when countered by ‘Enforcer’)
      • DEV NOTEAs we were testing the previous title update we discovered a serious bug in our process which required us to remove the Franchise data that supported the new abilities that were added in Madden’s other game modes.  Rather than removing them from the update entirely, we chose to release them in the other modes, fix the bug, and then release the abilities in today’s title update instead. Moving forward, we are still committed to all modes getting the applicable content at the same time. Thank you for your patience! The new abilities can be found in new generated rookie classes and are available as ability re-rolls in existing leagues.
  • Updated “Full On-Field Control” League option for players to work for H2H games
  • New ‘Game Day’ scenarios added around Playoff scouting and the Super Bowl for new and existing Franchise leagues
  • Fixed an issue exposing debug text in new league News stories
  • Adjusted League Commissioner setting: Player OVR Cut Restrictions from 60 OVR to 70 OVR
  • Fixed an issue in multi-user leagues during a ‘Forced Week Advance’ causing the player card to display incorrect information
  • Changed the ‘Coach Preseason Mentor’ scenarios so that they are no longer triggering on the same player year-over-year

Presentation Updates

  • Various Commentary Updates
  • Fixed an issue causing the Play Call Screen and/or Kick Meter to disappear after pressing the pause button following a timeout
  • Updated Superstar loading screen for Seahawks DE Jadeveon Clowney
  • Added receiver ‘red line’ to the practice field

Gameplay Updates

  • Tuning to ‘Mossed’ Zone Ability: Increased Zone triggers to Three catches of 30+ air yards on Arcade and Simulation, and Five catches on Competitive; also increased required distance of passes when active from 50+ to 55+ air yards.
  • Updated running animations for scrambling QB’s
  • Tuning to reduce effectiveness of Aggressive Run Blocking coach adjustment
  • Tuning to reduce frequency of AI-controlled players attempting strip tackles when using the Aggressive Strip Ball coach adjustment; also reduced chance of face-mask penalties & broken tackles with this adjustment
  • Tuning to reduce stumbling on defenders after a turnover
  • Fixed an issue sometimes causing players to freeze when scoring a TD at the same time they were breaking a tackle
  • Fixed an issue causing the spot of the ball to be incorrect when catching a punt while out of bounds
  • Fixed an issue preventing QB Contain defenders from properly disengaging in the 4-3 Over formation
  • Fixed an issue preventing zone coverage defenders from breaking into pursuit vs. QB Draw plays
  • Fixed an issue preventing a tackle in a specific multi-player interception animation
  • Fixed an issue causing the Deep Middle Third defender in Cover 3 plays to abandon his zone vs. PA Read plays
  • DEV NOTE: A quick update on the status of playbook updates: Playbooks are still a big part of our continuous development plan for Madden NFL  20, and while we’ve already made some updates this year, our players have told us they want more. We’re excited to share that we have some significant playbook content in the works that should be ready for launch before the end of the calendar year, in addition to regular playbook updates in the meantime, so stay tuned!

Ultimate Team Updates

  • Added Secondary Positions for select players
    • DEV NOTE: Secondary Positions allow users to substitute players with this capability into other positions and still have their Chemistry count towards the lineup. The Secondary Position feature is only available on select Power Ups and will open up after you consume the Core Elite or Legend version of the player. For example, Aaron Donald will have the option to be designated as either LE or DT once his Power Up reaches the Tier after placing in his Core Elite. A full list of eligible players and their positions will be posted shortly.
  • Likeness update and signature passing animations added for Ultimate Team Legend QB Peyton Manning
  • Likeness update for young version of Ultimate Team Legend RB Emmitt Smith

Superstar KO

  • New Legends added to the Superstar: KO draft pool
    • WR Marvin Harrison
    • CB Deion Sanders
    • SS Troy Polamalu
    • FS Ed Reed

  1. Another waste of patch. Nothing outside if the kicking meter was fixed. No new equipment still added, nobody cares about x-factors if you want to play an arcade game go play NFL street. The game plays 200% better with the x-factors turned off. Superstar KO also stupid.
Why do these developers only care about the gimicky ****?

Try again bud. I love the Xfactors. Just your opinion which you're entitled to. I'm into sim but adding the Xfactors completely added fun to my CFM.
(Which is still down and for some reason those threads were locked so I have no idea where to check for updates)
Superstar K.O. is also fun. (Especially if you have friends to play it with) What I can't stand is M.U.T.

Wait..... no new equipment that was told to us back in August that it was coming soon .... we are in week 10 of the season...... !!!!!!!!

    Probably told too soon.
Kane: I literally say I can't commit to anything on Mouthpieces, but damn did I try harder than hell. If anyone is upset about it it's me.
I'll never understand why the thresholds to trigger an Xfactor being in the zone are more stringent on Competitive than Simulation. Seems counter intuitive to me

Anyone played any to see what the new qb scrambling animations are??

I have a video of it on Twitter, not sure how to post videos in here. It’s pretty fluid and gone is the goofy looking legs spread out run.

I am only commenting so that the developers see that there are some people who believe that equipment should be down on the priority list, if on it at all. I, for one, will never say a patch is stupid because no equipment updates are included. Mouthpieces and gloves do not change my gaming experience.
The OP is right, however, regarding Superstar KO. Pointless waste of time and I fear that instead of accepting that it is a waste of time, EA will double down on it next year.
Not sure why the above was designated under Presentation Updates, rather than Gameplay, but since patch downloaded I am thankfully no longer experiencing these issues. I hope this patch "takes" for others who were in a similar situation as well.
So after this patch and still no 5th year option scenarios and any detailed scenarios like hold outs or trade demands, the scenario engine has to be viewed as a flop. I was optimistic that it wasn't just a half baked feature but it for sure was.
It's unfortunate, I really think something like this can make cfm a living league. But this piss poor implementation pretty much has ended Madden for me this year.

In all fairness I think I read this was a smaller patch mainly to introduce those new x factor abilities to CFM. So hopefully that means that later this month there will be another patch for 5th year options and stuff.
But yeah, man.. That's inexcusable of them. Give us 5th year options (among many other things)!

Yep.....was seeing the disappearing play call screens and it really got me upset.
I am going to play tonight to see if the stability improvements calmed things down. Pre 1.17 the game was awesome. 1.17 did something to the entire feel for me and I am never one to jump to conclusions. But it was so obvious for me.
Hopefully 1.18 got it back to where it was prior to 1.17 because I was enjoying the heck out the game prior to that patch.

Lol, I was just gonna PM you on this. Under the weather so I only played briefly to test these "fixes" out. I know exactly what you mean about the "feel" comment, but did not play long enough to express an informed opinion about that.
Hope you are back and up and running. A lot of the slider community is depending on you. I only adjust (defeat) user sliders, with the exception of boosting CPU run blocking, so I don't know how or if your's will need attention.

I felt this too. I was having some shootouts, normal scores, and defensive battles before 1.17. So I was rather enjoying it, not so much after 1.17. After 1.18 I had an enjoyable game beating Giants 26-23. It was 13-10 Giants at the half. With about four minutes to go with score 16-16 I sacked Jones for a safety to go up 18-16. But I messed up on the free kick as it looked like it was going out of bounds so I let it hit the ground. Of course it stays in and Giants recover and score to take 23-18 lead. Two minutes to go I drove down and get a TD to take 26-23 lead with 30 seconds left and hold on to win.
So it's now November and in my 32 team CFM I still have teams which cannot carry 53 men because it's "too many" and $30 million in cap space is not enough to re-sign an average player. Pfffft.

Beyond a flop. It seems to me they mislead consumers to help sell a product. Maybe I’m wrong?
I'm beyond frustrated at this point. Where's the Returner SS ability? Did they forget about that? And do they think we're dumb enough to forget about it? I just don't understand the strategy here. Why make promises that you aren't going to deliver on... And why pretend to care about franchise when it's clear you don't... I get that MUT makes the money, but man this is just getting so old. No communication. No accountability. Tons of lies and empty promises. Same $60 out of our pockets as people who play MUT. So frustrating.

LOL. Dude it's November. They are done getting passes. They haven't even delivered on the stuff that was promised for "Mid-September" yet... I loved this game in August and i had a lot of hope. But it's gone. My faith in these lying developers is gone. This is a joke. They don't care about us. They don't care about this game being good. There's no returner ability. There's no fix for defensive coverage. There's no "living league scenarios." There's no 5th yr option scenario. Just like there was no realistic contracts that they promised in the spring. Madden 20 is the empty promises edition of the game.

I understand exactly how you feel. I feel the same way. The sim/franchise side is always neglected until after the tournament scene is over. I’m sorry but I’m not waiting until February every year to play with updates we were promised in September. They did the same thing with last year’s game. SMH.
I agree about all the off field, stuff, 5th year options, scenerios, promises not kept, etc.... I'm down with all that.
However, I haven't played this game in two weeks because I wasn't a happy camper with the on the field game play of Octobers title update, it just ruined it for me.
Plug the game in after this title update and the game was back to where it was before October's title update.
I had my first ever Hail Mary completed pass after one of the WR's missed it and it bounced into Germano Allison's hands. The running game was great on both sides.
And MITCH Trubisky played like Mitch Trubisky, scrambled for 40 yds on 2 scrambles and completed 66% passing.
I'll join in on the parade about the lack of CFM and promise kept, but don't try to tell me the game on the field isn't playing better or the same as before the last title update.
No weird animations, game played clean as a whistle.
All this with xfactors on and not one sack from Mack.

I agree with everything you said roadman. I'm just really disappointed in the broken promises on scenario engine. Cfm needs some serious attention if EA wants to keep me as a customer next year.

Not a big deal, but hoping they fixed the players in draft class having mismatched shoes. Just an eye sore to see guys with low tops of Adidas and mid Underarmours among other mismatched shoes.
Has anyone else noticed that there is now a “personality” trait? Im in offline CFM and if you open a player card and go to ratings the top trait in the bottom left corner box is now “Personality:”.
Ive seen: leader, team player, intense, charismatic, and spontaneous, and occasionally its blank.
I’m playing as the Eagles. Leaders are generally who you’d expect (Wentz, Cox, Jenkins, etc). Spontaneous seem to be possible character issue guys (Desean Jackson). One intense player was Brandon Graham (which is a very fitting description for him). And charismatic I only saw once and it was on a rookie I drafted (I’m in year 2). The blank ones were both other rookies that I drafted. Team player was pretty much everyone else.
The personality traits were not listed in the edit player area. Searched high and low. So not editable. No idea what they do, if anything. Could this be the groundwork for something more substantial?
I know it can be fun to complain about . all the stuff they didnt add but lets all admit that for the most part, the post launch support has been great.
I get the obsession over mouthgaurds and stuff but come on..EA is really supporting the game great this year.

Are they though?... They haven't delivered on most of the things they've promised post-launch. The October patch was awful making the game junk for a month. What have they actually done post launch besides taking 3 months to add new abilities to cfm? All while not including the returner ability we were promised months ago.
I had a chance to play last night and this morning and like where this patch has left us gameplay wise. The game feels stable and game play is all good as far as I'm concerned.
I played yesterday for more than I have in a long time, it’s definitely feeling more like it did at release now, the updated QB scrambling animation is nice too.

Love hearing what you guys are saying, can't wait to play tonight. But what do you guys mean by more stable?

Not jittery, not warping, smooth animations, playbooks not appearing blank in certain formations (for me it was some shotgun formations were just....gone..blank on the screen). AI behavior stable again. I was seeing crazy things going on in October. I had to shelve the game. Now I am back enjoying it again.
Make no mistake though. This is my last Madden on the PS4....it will be a couple of years before I get a PS5. The only thing that can get me to go Madden 21 is the scnario engine being totally used like it should (holdouts, contract disputes, trade demands, locker room drama, just more). And the injury system and replay system being revamped.
In other words....most likely ain't happening.

Outside of that first huge patch the game has not been supported in my opinion, at least for franchise. All the new additions have remained lackluster. A lot of people love the xfactor stuff which there has been a lot of ongoing support for but it just doesn't do much for me. The scenario engine was poorly thought out and remains poorly implemented. Press a button each week to have a reporter congratulate you on a win and it is no difference if you win a week three game or the Superbowl. Hell, it don't even matter if you win for it to trigger . I have moved on to other games and may or may not pick it up again. A lot to complain about with this game and EA practices but I got more than 60 dollars worth of entertainment out of it as I am sure I will again next year.

Game feels good but man they've gotta get these star QBs playing more like star players and the scrubs playing like scrubs. Started a CFM with the Eagles starting from last week with live rosters... All-Madden, 6 min quarters.
    Game 1 vs Bears- Trubisky: 13-13, 213 yds, 3 TDs, 0 INTs
    Game 2 vs Patriots- Brady: 16-26, 178 yds, 0 TDs, 5 INTs
I've got the Eagles D so they're nothing special at all. I got 2 user INTs against Brady, but the other 3 were total junk right to my players. He got in the zone once at the beginning of the 2nd half only to throw an INT a few plays later. Meanwhile, Trubisky couldn't miss all game.
This is the biggest change from the feel of the beta to me. In the beta star QBs felt like star QBs, but now it's a total coin toss whether you'll go against robo QB or INT frenzy QB and their stats don't seem to matter.

Totally opposite of what I experienced, but I'm on all pro too, so, that might make a difference.
Trubisky hit 66% of his passes and I was very pleased by that.
I'm sure my next game will be different.
Edaddy, I did not see where the cpu RB's were stiff arming and juking around lights out on me, they didn't have to, lol, Cohen drove through many holes to drive a truck through. I know he had over 100yds on me. I just feel these rb's moves did something to the game that they haven't been able to figure out to put them back in without mucking that area of the game, just my guess.
I will say the coverage on zones and man to man felt tighter. There were more CB/WR collisions that enabled the ball to come squirting most of the time, once in a while the WR would hang on to the ball.
Did I mention I caught my only Hail Mary ever in Madden. lol And of course, Arod was the qb.
Hope that answers your questions edaddy.

I've seen the QB thing as well where the stars play like garbage and scrubs chew me up. I have a feeling traits are involved somehow. I will say that scrubs play very conservative. High completion percentage but low yards. Better guys take more risks and it leads to more picks and missed passes.

Even star QBs have plenty of bad games. I can't imagine anyone has really put in enough volume since the patch to say definitively that QB performance is random.
They still have not fixed the visual feedback glitch!:( Thise that want a clean screen have to put up with text and boxes popping up.  Very disappointing!

Road did they nerf the penalties?..

AP default, I had a pretty good amount of penalties based vs what I'm used to.
I think there were 6 or 7 penalties the whole game.
Illegal block in the back on a sweep and a FM penalty on a clothesline tackle that was appropriately called, plus a few holding calls that negated some runs.
The one game I played after latest patch CPU had zero penalties. I had six... five false starts and one roughing the kicker( I did it on purpose after I got mad giving up a TD lol).

Has anyone found a way around this? It seems like the text boxes have been enlarged (possibly in the Oct patch) to beta levels. They shrunk them for release and now they're gigantic again and it seems like there's no way to get rid of them.

I don’t know but I had a running into the kicker (5yards)in the last game I played. This was a first. Usually it’s always been roughing the kicker (15 yards).Maybe they are heading in the right direction finally.
I started a new offline franchise mode yesterday and whenever I try to download a 2020 draft class from madden share it doesn't work. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Yep. Go to Community Downloads in the base game (before going to Franchise etc.) and download whichever Draft Class you want. When you want to put it in Franchise, go to your Franchise and press Import Local Files and then find the Draft Class you downloaded before going on Franchise.
For whatever reason, you can't download them when in Franchise Mode, only on the regular game before going into Franchise.

There is a google work for your exact around that i found, had to delete something but i don’t remember exactly what it was.
So, this is new since this last patch.
I drafted a hidden rookie HB in the first round. Dude is playing great putting up great numbers. I get a breakout scenario for him after the 4th game. At this point he has played about 350 downs and his development is still hidden. I hit the scenario goal and after the game I'm promptly told he has been upgraded to superstar. He is still listed as hidden and has about 100 downs left to reveal.

First off- sounds like a beast HB! Nice work.
Secondly- that's strange. I had something similar happen before this patch where a player with a hidden dev trait got a scenario and upgraded to SS, but his revealed after the game. I could've hit the snap count during that game though. I'm really not sure.

He's killing it. Super happy about that pick.
It's a minor issue, but I would rather it just say he's been upgraded to HIDDEN since he still hasn't met the downs played goal. That's the perfect scenario.
If they are going to choose to tell me his upgraded development even though he's still hasn't met the downs played goal then the hidden should be gone.
Neither is a gamebreaking issue but I would rather not know until the downs are met.

I am happy to report the gameplay and stability is back to where it was prior to the October patches.

the change in gameplay can be felt in existing franchises too? or just play now?
Why people care about equipment is beyond me. But a game-altering revolutionary mechanic like X-factors "no one cares about".
I get why it's hard to be a game developer.
    roadman

Road tried the game with the patch and I must say the game is much improved and as smooth as close to release day.. The coverage is alot tighter and the running game on both sides are smooth.tackling is improved 100%...now only thing left is to bring back rb foot planting jukes , and stiff arms..thanks for the heads up man..Kudos EA..Now if they can only keep taking step forwards and not back we will all be in business...Out!!!!

Man I’m hoping they do bring back some semblance of cpu juke or footplanting.
I’m hearing a lot of good things with these updates...but I am still using game at 1.10 because the cpu running had unchanged. I’ll keep watching the threads..and hoping..:y9:

While I do miss the open field CPU backs juking, I can tell you that a good CPU back will tear me up at times. Mr. Run CMC hit me for 140 last night with his Panthers. I am absolutely seeing foot planting now, with far fewer race car turning. That is actually better than it was OOTB. I am also seeing the CPU backs hit the gas and explode, behind the line of scrimmage, since latest update. At first, I thought they bumped game speed. Stiff arms are also back and are being utilized more, rather than the CPU back stopping and going into a silly-looking "bull-charge" truck before the defender is even in his area.
The overall CPU running game is really good now in my experience. Two patches ago, it was almost completely dead.
Edge, I'm getting worked by good backs as well post-patch. While some of the moves in OOTB are still not present or are not present with the same frequency on 1.18, HB performance IS improved on this patch, to the point where I have to devote extra resources to stopping the run on AP vs. good backs and lines.

That was my experience with Cohen(before leaving town) and the nice part is the CPU stuck with the run.

Yea man the cpu is running well but the backs just hit the hole and run with no semblance of making a defender miss in space, stiff arms, and elusiveness..it really looks like they sped up the backs acceleration and game speed to give them more juice. through the hole...the problems are really noticeable when a back takes it to the edge and instead of making a move to make the defender miss they run right inti him ..the run game looks great norrh south running but any time ut has to shift its terrible..what seperates backs is the ability to make defenders miss and shiftiness in the open field..there is no difference at this point..whats worse is seeing a punt returner getting the ball and just run into the defender blindly..it takes away the strategy of using certain backs in situations..and at times it looks like pee we footbalk running..It is what it is .. Im also seeing less touch on lead passes, noticing some physchic coverage , a little robo qb, and it lo9ks like PI has been nurfed..the patch did improve the smoothness of the game though and its a step...I just wish they would build on whats good with game instead of taking away things every 2 weeks..its a guessing game what you get from patch to patch...out..
I am doing some data testing and therefore I am running a bone stock slider set with default settings, sliders, and playbooks with the Ravens. I have seen this happen a couple of times but the most glaring example was against LeVeon Bell and the Jets.
In a recent patch they reintroduced the HB stagger. LeVeon gets tripped up in the backfield but triggers the stagger. He meanders through a wall of six defenders who all can't lay a finger on him as he does his best Weeble impression and Drunken Master's his way around, through, or over defenders flopping like they were in the NBA. He keeps on staggering 10 more yards down the field before Anthony Levine comes in and barely manages to trip him up and he rolls forward after the tackle for another 3-4 yards.
I've seen a guy stagger through a couple of times and pick up maybe a yard or two, but that run was just nuts.

I do know they are aware of the situation based on Twitter chatter.

Tackle Avoidance is a universal setting, so when they tweaked the Hit Stick/Tackle aspects for H2H Play, once again “Tackle Animation” triggering became 1st priority since this was a huge bug with H2H players running through a plethora of tackle attempts on a single play.
Then you throw in the SS/X-Factor tackling ability that boost the interaction to favor the defender to pretty much 100% tackle animation triggering, you can see how the AI RB Avoidance aspects are impacted.
They just need to redo Gameplay Sliders and incorporate more in general and just adjust those Sliders instead of these universal applications that have consistently taken the game from a good state to a bad one.
Until a greater/improved “User Sandbox” is provided in Madden, this will be the yearly norm for User vs AI gamers.
Idk. I’m really enjoying the gameplay since 1.18. So much better for me than 1.17. The game is far from perfect but I’m so glad they brought back good gameplay. I’m not even sure what “perfect” means. I see so many plays every Sunday in real games that are so far from “perfect”. I’m happy with where things are at. The game in its current state feeds my football video game needs and I’m having a blast. Really hoping they do not change current gameplay with future patches. Please EA, stay away from the gameplay feel of 1.17.

Gotta wonder if they messed up by releasing this patch when they did. Many, including me, weren't happy with the game before this patch. Now they patch it and it's a ton of fun but the servers still aren't fixed and Franchise is in a worse state than it was before the patch.
Obviously messing around, but if they just waited to fix the game until the servers were working there'd be a lot less people paying attention to the game right now.

At this poiint I agree with you 109%..while the patch did give smoother gameplay it has introduced a host of issues..besides the online franchise debacle, the whole penalty system.has been nerfed..their is also a glitch where the lineman in unison blow out defensive lineman 6 yrds down field almost like the pancake glitch from last year..I assume this was glitched when they meseed with aggressive blocking ..fatigue is nerfed as well and I just get the feeling that somehow simulation mode was somehow glitched to play like competitive mode..it plays out like competitive mode..the patch does introduce some smooth tackling and slightly tighter coverage but somethimg is glitched IMO..I just try to rationalizd at this point last year we had a better game devoid of alot of Madden 20 latest problems how are we back to where we were years ago with the sane persistent problems ..how?..again its gotta be a tough job but there has to be someonr that looks and says this patch isnt ready to be released..its like stuff just throws to the wall hoping to stick..frustrating but it is what it is man....
Not enjoying the game anymore. It’s not smooth and is back to ‘19’s unremarkable state. It’s just not fun compared to launch day. I’ll tweak some sliders and try some other stuff, as I want to like this game.
I have been able to enjoy the game more this year than I have in years. I only play offline. Is the game better now that at launch? I’m tempted to delete everything to reset the game to its out of the box quality. I’m not saying the game is that bad now but I did like the “feel” a few patches back. Vague I know.

Have you tried just renting from Redbox etc.., download and run Offline?
    - even if you purchased the digital download
Some of the issues that the 1st patch/update was to fix, I never experienced one time.
The other stuff added since release, I can do without because the gameplay is king to me, and there’s a night and day deference.
I would try this before closing shop.

Great idea. I’m not bashing I’m just missing that wide open feel at release. I’m now seeing tons of dropped balls and the sideline/end zone awareness has diminished, IMO. Running is not fun like it was...nerfed for cpu and user controlled ball carriers....too much block shedding and no time for spins/jukes. People have said this was an intentional change by EA. I do not feel like I have ball carrier control like I did at release.

Renting and testing is actually a great idea...do it. Our perception of events can actually be affected by certain variables aside from facts. I persuade you specifically to test sideline awareness. I believe that I've never seen momentum or awareness near the sideline ever ever being this poor. Is it my perception or is it reality?

The other thing, the out-of-box version of the game feels even better than the game was on launch day (at least from a gameplay perspective). The pre-launch patches apparently borked a few things.
I'm not particularly impressed with 1.18. Yeah, it's more stable than 1.17 which allowed me to finish-off a franchise. But when I compare 1.18 gameplay-wise to Out-of-the-Box (OOTB), it's lacking in SO many areas (all of them making the game less challenging/engaging). Note: all observations are relative to my slider setup

    • More user-like running by CPU (better vision, jukes, etc.)
    • The interior push is lacking in 1.18
    • There is a distinct lack of footplanting relative to OOTB
    • The CPU QB play is significantly less challenging in 1.18. The one wart of OOTB is that the 'dropback glitch' will appear usually once per game - but even with 1.18, there are similar (albeit not the same) issues.
    • The nerfed pass lead sensitivity makes user passing easier on 1.18 vs OOTB (this was a very early patch adjustment to appease the mediocre H2H kiddies)

(As a note: I would deem the overall coverage effectiveness to be roughly the same between the two versions - OOTB is not as bad coverage-wise as the launch day patch version)
What do we get in return in 1.18 vs OOTB to offset the mediocre gameplay? More scenarios to give YOUR team a boost. More 'abilities' - which further dilute the impact of having them (i.e. the same mistake NBA 2k has made with badges). A few minor bug fixes in CFM? Sorry, but for me, that's a bad trade-off. I did what I needed to do in my patched version franchise and I have scratched that itch - it's time to go back to OOTB for me.
Before I go back to a patched version of the game, I need to see a patch from EA that makes the scenario engine more than just an XP/morale/dev upgrade machine for user teams. I started thinking about the franchise mode in general and I've had a ton of fun with it. But what's made it fun for me hasn't been the scenario engine, it's been the ratings spread and the enhanced progression system where guys improve constantly (vs a bolus at the end of the year). It creates a lot of fun storylines and players to follow. Those things are already in the OOTB game, so everything else is kinda...well...meh.
If you would have told me when I was playing the Beta that at this point in the year I wouldn't have finished one season in my Franchise mode, I would have said that you were insane, but here we are.
I'm not someone who is going to jump through any hoops to go back and play an earlier version of a game that has less QOL tuning and less features than the current version. That just doesn't work for me. I'm envious of those folks who can go back to the OOTB version.
I say all that to say, that the lack of juking by the CPU has been a game killer for me. Even though the CPU can still be successful in the running game and get big plays in the passing game, this removal of a fundamental football move destroys my enjoyment of the game. We don't even get the courtesy of knowing why it was done, just taken out months ago without a peep being said.
If I was someone who didn't play all genres of games, and just played Madden solo CFM, I would be beyond devastated, as it is it still sucks big time.

I played 2 games last night where the running back juked me once, and then a receiver put a nice spin move on me, I hadn't seen any of that since initial release, made me all tingly inside.
I didn't buy the game this year, but does lowering the fumble slider bring out more CPU special moves like in previous versions? Could that help you guys who miss the OOTB CPU run game?

I tried that to no avail. I think it's more than a "tuning" that went awry, I think it's something more under-the-hood with that.

Dude, I feel ya....that's been me most years. I've tried OOTB on a couple of previous Maddens and walked away from them quickly (as they were usually very messy and not worth the minor hassle of dealing with them). I sucked it up with patches and the juking issue (which is a big one for me too) through 6+ franchise seasons.
1.17 was my final straw and I went out and got a copy of the disc (with every intention of returning it if I didn't care for it). The gameplay blew me away immediately....it was SO close to the Beta version in terms of the gameplay 'feel'. But there are downsides:
    The two obvious
    - dealing with auto-updates (which is basically disabling auto-updates and disabling the network in your system menu when firing-up the game)
    - you can't use custom rosters/classes - I don't care personally, because I never use them anyways (but totally get that this might be 'breaking' to many)
Now, the QOL things that were later "fixed"
    - rookies with Star Dev do not get hidden dev (this was not a bug but the original design decision)
    - QB rushing stats for simulated games have issues (I could care less - and frankly, the overall sim stats are worse now than when that issue was present)
    - the snap count for hidden dev guys has issues with resetting. This is probably the one egregious 'bug' in OOTB
    - fewer scenarios/abilities - I already spoke my piece on that
I'm not trying to talk you into it or anything like that, just wanted to lay it out. At the end of the day, it comes down to what makes us all happy (whether it be playing OOTB, patched, or a different game altogether)

I haven’t played much since 1.17 patch, either. The playcall disappearing bug was frustrating and I was struggling to get the gameplay right, also.
As per running QBs, holy crap! I’m in 2nd season with falcons. Looks like Brees retired and saints got that Ala kid Tua. EVERY time I played a nickel cover 3 and usered the MLB a little deep over the middle, Tua GASHED me for 10-20 yards. Lol. It was totally realistic, though. I was so surprised with how quick he made the decisions to run. I started using the QB contain stuff, and that settled it down for the most part. Again, realistically, imo.
I’m playing with my own sliders, but I think I’ve played 3 games since this patch. The first game was a loss to the saints because of Tua running the ball and I’ve still got user rushing too hard. But, it’s funny, because the saints game was the first of my 2nd season. At the end of the game, I got the ‘CFM is gated’ message. Lol. As it turns out, once the gate was off, that game didn’t count. Lol. So, I changed some sliders for my running game AND I used qb contain for the entire game, and beat them 31-24. It was a really great game. I think I’ve seen the qb running animations, because I never noticed anything ‘janky’ about Tua running. Next game was another good looking/feeling game, but I destroyed Rodgers and the Pack 37-10. Gameplay really did feel good, however. And, with my sliders, I’m giving up cpu running yards. So, I’m seeming some competitive games.
For some reason, I’ve dominated Rodgers since madden 16. Lol. Seriously, I don’t know why or what, but I always kill him. It should be the complete other way around. But, such is video gaming. Lol
