  1. TL;DR - It's free, it's janky. It has potential as I definitely think there is something there to work with.
I played for about an hour and a half. Maybe my expectations had bottomed out so bad that this is about what I expected so I'm not gutted like a lot of people. I'm probably the only one that didn't completely hate it. My PES roots don't run as deep as a lot of people either. I wasn't there for the glory days when PES was the dominate name in the video game football world.

    • Initially the controls felt a bit off. After I approached it a bit more realistically it felt a bit better. Slow down, take the extra touch, make sure your face the right direction. Also sprinting is a skill now. You can actually "over"commit/sprint, which the recover from looks comically bad right now.
    • Does it look next gen... not at all and def looks nothing like that Messi teaser. Largely still looks like PES 21 in most respects. The lighting is a bit off especially during day games.
    • Collision detection was okay but the refs were non existent. Either they totally botched it or they nerfed them for this "demo" since you can only play 5 minutes.
    • The computer missed some absolute sitters. I never changed it off regular difficulty though so maybe that was it.
    • Tried an online game and the guy quit on me even though the score was 0-0. He seemed like he didn't switch to alternate controls though he was playing pretty poorly or maybe he just hated the game.
    • That new camera that's going to be an hard pass from me right now. It zooms in and out way to slowly. Initially it was cool to get up in the action but it's just not responsive enough.
    • Can't wait till that blue and yellow color scheme gets the boot. No way they keep that permanently.
    • This is 100% a demo, guess the called it the release to try and keep up with FIFA dropping officially.
    • There's really no sign that this has been in the works for 2 years. I think they underestimated how much work it would be moving to Unreal but that is also something that gives me hope. UR is probably a lot easier to tweak and refine than Fox and they are no longer tied to a yearly cycle.
    • This still feels more like football than what EA has just put out. It's janky but it's janky football at least.
    • It's free so that a positive.
    • If you play online there are 150 teams to choose from some licensed some not. You can still enjoy your Manchester Blue team lol.
    • The menus are slightly better but still weirdly setup.
    • I like the soundtrack. Their taste in music is all over the place like mine.
    • Like Royce I agree the tackling is a bit weird.
    • Luckily I didn't experience any of the weird animations like others

I'm def sticking with PES 21 on the PC for now as FIFA is a no go as well unless there's a deep discount. Overall I think there is some potential and given what Konami has done these past 3 or so months it's no telling what the update will bring. I can't even give it a grade right now I'd just mark it as in in progress/incomplete. I'll keep it installed a play games every now and then.
I'll start with three words - grass, grass, grass :y9:
Visually this is a car crash. We are in 2021 and you are playing on a PS5, yet everything looks so dated and under cooked. The lighting is off, HDR is non-existent, the crowd is dire, the menu structure, colours and interaction makes you wonder what a Konami boardroom looks like when they take decisions.
The Konami welcoming screen greets you with the phrase: "Our ambition was to create the perfect football environment, from the grass on the pitch, to the players' movements, all the way to the crowds in the stadium".
If this is not a joke, I'd love to know what they were smoking?!?
The argument that you can overlook visual issues if the gameplay is good doesn't hold any water. Even if it gameplay was better than the competition (and sadly this year it is not), it is inexcusable that after 2 years, they come out with this.
I am also astonished by people who say that it is free, so we should take it for what it is and have no expectations. I don't want for this to be free, damn it! The cost of a game is equivalent to that of a mediocre meal - surely people can spend the money for a good game, especially if they will play it the entire year. Just put the resources in (and here I mean - employ people like the modders who add the special effects, camera angles, weather, etc.).
With the pandemic, the video game industry has grown multi fold.
OK, so once you put the visual mess aside (the grass continues to make me cringe though), you can see what they've tried to do with the gameplay. Yes, it is a step forward from 2021 (but that was not hard), but it is a baby step. It is slower (much slower), but whilst they were looking for realism, it does not actually achieve it through the game speed. Player models look decent in cut scenes and daylight, but not very inspiring in night matches.
I am guessing that Konami have an association with Nintendo because the sound that the ball makes when it's struck is straight out of Super Mario. Laughable.
Sorry, but you really dropped the ball on this Konami (pun intended).
I could barely make it through the first game. It's far closer to the performance test build than I imagined. That colour scheme is super garish and your players are basically levitating on the pitch. Honestly I'd rather they moved the release date back, because this is just a waste of precious PS5 storage space.
A rollout this bad in a year when Fifa is playable again is absurd, I've already deleted the game.
All of this after taking a year off to focus on this product?
I'd hate to see what it would've looked like if they didn't take the extra year.

Probably harsh on ISS tho, sorry.
I wanted to give it a shot since I always end up heading to PES around the holidays due to FIFA fatigue, but I think they well and truly killed it off. Such a shame.
    TokenFatGuy
Is it just me or is there only one mode and only a few teams available right now?

If you play the "match event" there's more teams available
I feel bad for guys like Spoony & Barry (Pes Uni) who had positive reviews of the build they played which they said was obviously a later build than what was released.
Way to burn those bridges Konami SMH
Installed it yesterday and very quickly my reaction was "yikes!" and haven't touched it since. I'm a long time ISS/PES vet (as well as FIFA), this is easily one of the most disastrous releases and Konami spent TWO years on this!
    W T BIG F'ing hell.
There really should have been another season update. Maybe whatever licensing deals they have in place wouldn't allow for that though. There's a reason most AAA titles take at least 3 or 4 years to release new games and sequels. Konami realistically should have started this transition in 2018 at the latest but seemed to make the decision halfway through the release of 20. While game development isn't any skill I have I'm sure you cant just plug n play when switching engines. Then throw in a switch to f2p, a pandemic and that steals even more focus in what was already probably a tight situation.

Can you imagine paying the 39.99 version to find out that you basically got a DEMO?
They didn't pay for the demo they are paying for cards and points or whatever else that is supposed to be released November 11th. If they didn't read that in the description that's on them.

This is just so poor. The graphics are a huge step back(is this to make it compatible with mobile eventually. The game play feels sluggish. Like others have said this is basically a demo. 10 teams or so, haven’t tried online but playing vs the cpu u can only play 5 min halves, all the weather options are greyed out, 1 ball option. The only people I can see playing this are those that play it just because it’s free.
Well I booted up the game this afternoon to give it a try.
Now I like the lighting especially how the sun comes through the roof of Old Trafford a lot better than how Fifa does it and that’s it, that’s all I like about it.
The gameplay is glitchy, players are very unresponsive, through ball only for forward to run towards it, stop & jog until it goes out of play even though I’m holding sprint!!!!
Also couldn’t work out who the guy was walking out of the tunnel until I realised it was Ronaldo, the graphics are poor compared to other scanned faces from pes days.

What a disaster. This is literally the worst PES I've ever played. From the poor graphics, to the laggy controls, to the awful menu, I just don't know what Konami were thinking. They couldn't have done worse if they tried. About the only thing I would praise is the grass texture. :jpshakehe
This game sucks major ⚽️ … nothing to like here, the game is terribly unresponsive… even 15 year old soccer games are better than this crap .. just a complete mess, everyone was either new hires or they just didn’t have enough employees to create a good game .. I don’t what the problem was. What’s more frustrating is that they got to rob the license from FIFA for some of the teams, I.e.: Juventus, and now the consumers doesn’t get a great game by either party :/ I’ll stick with my old FIFA 20 edition with Maradona and Ronaldinho smog other HOF on the game

They just showed that they're willing to take money to lie. Nothing new.

I wouldn’t say all that. From the start the build they said they played was newer. They mentioned that in their previews before this demo came out.
Spoony was brutally honest on his livestream today and Barry has a podcast coming out later to discuss his thoughts. I’m sure he won’t pull any punches.

This is the worst soccer/football game I've ever played.
I'm on the Series X and everything is bad. It looks like a budget last gen title that got reskinned for current gen on the Series X. Everything looks flat and dull.
The gameplay is atrocious. The reason there are so few fouls is that the players constantly morph through each other's bodies. Collision and player movement is built on how ghosts would move on the moon in reduced gravity.
They're trying that nonsensical "this is slow, like the real game" but it feels like they picked a speed where all the flaming dumpsters aren't zooming around at the same time.
The AI is against you more than with you. On defense, they're more concerned about invisible squirrels on the field rather than keeping up with their opponent and on offense, everyone just watches me with the ball and doesn't do anything to join in. It's a good thing that I'm able to crack the defense and do a solid run to the goal no matter the situation.
Nothing here is good. The only good part is ranting here for the time wasted on this awful, lazily made, game.
    Bah.

  2. It's free so that a positive.

  3. Unfortunately we can't really look at this as a continuation of the PES series, and therefore compare it to last year's game in terms of price/value. So it really isn't a positive at all, to me. This is a brand new free-to-play franchise, and needs to be judged outside of "well last year it cost $40, so this is fine."
Playing with the mod to extend time allows me to see a little bit more hope in this release. One positive thing over the last few installments is how the CPU will take you on a little more to get into dangerous positions so I really do like that. However they really have to fix the Physical defending feature it's too glitchy and produces comical physics defying animations.

PES 2014 had that too, and it was the first game on that engine. And FIFA 12 was the same. That'll get sorted out I think. Just the nature of a graphical/physics overhaul.

Yesterday I downloaded a f2p game it's not very good. I didn't spend $70, didn't "pre-order" it for $40. In a week a month, a years time I can try it again for free without spending anything but my time. The fact that I can try this or any game for free is a positive in my book. If you would have rather spent $70 that's fine, but I'm glad I didn't spend any money and glad I can continue to try the game and its future updates with no monetary loss on my end. So yes I think it being free is a positive.

Is there no way to sub players during the 5 minute halves? On PS4 also, how do you change the difficulty, can’t find it anywhere?

Quick subs aren’t in the demo .
You have to go to settings before the game kicks off and it should be under gameplay settings

What a waste of time that was. I've deleted it for now. I'll come back in November when the actual game gets released. However, if it still plays like this, I will not be spending money on a ML mode.

I thought something was missing but you know I hardly ever use this feature when playing the CPU.
Do we know for sure that offline vs cpu is going to be longer than 5 minutes matches Could you play longer matches on PES Lite? All bets are off here lol.
In a world that has become so divided in the last few years, it's nice to see us all come together and unanimously agree this game sucks.......hard.

Yeah I dunno my only hope for me entertaining this game more is that they get it to an a acceptable state by winter and the modding community feel inspired to give time and effort to beautify this game. I have been very spoiled this last year to play a fully modded PES 2021 and it looks 10x better than this, its very jarring.

I've also been lucky enough to enjoy it on PC in all its modded glory and its sad to think that those days might be behind me. I just cant see them rebounding from this regardless if they update it well. This feels very much like the NBA Elite implosion with the added fuel of the mass usage of social media which is amazingly toxic even on a good day.
Thanks KG on the subs before the game. I knew that, I wanted to sub during the game, even though it is 5 minutes. I’m truly disappointed, I LOVE PES 2021 with the PES Uni option file, I had high hopes for this and to say I am let down and disappointed would be a massive understatement. For the first time in probably 5 or more years I will be buying FIFA 22 tomorrow. I’ll keep playing PES 2021, but not this, at least not anytime soon.
Well, it seems that after my 10h trial of Fifa 22 ends I will go back to PES2021 for another year. Based on mess that this new eFootball launch was I highly doubt they will make the game playable before the end of next year.
I just hope the game is still alive that much, will be a long long way to recover from this terrible first impression, specially on steam where the game is the actually worse rated of all time.
Downloaded today, played three games and deleted it. This is not worthy of any time. Sole positive aspect of the whole thing is the fact it's free so i didn't loose anything but 30 minutes of my time.
Sad to see this fiasco. I'm a bit bored of 2021 so i was hoping for new version on new gen console..

One of the modders over at evoweb has been looking at some of the source files for eFootball. He says it’s basically a port from the mobile version since he can see so much of the same code migrated over.

Raise your hand if you are genuinely surprised. I think I remember them denying it, but how do you make a game playable on mobile (with crossplay, etc,) without developing it on mobile first? It just makes sense to start from there. Really kind of kills the excitement for next-gen.

I believe Fortnite was first developed for non-mobile platforms, and released on mobile several years later and has crossplay. So it can be done (anything can really, it all just depends how its done).

It’s probably much easier to do cross-platform ports of UE-derived games when you have the engine developers sitting down the hall from you.
I don’t think any of this is surprising given the fact that during an interview in May 2021, Konami leadership stated their strategy was changing to focus on smartphone titles as this is “where the future of gaming lies” (https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2015/05/konami-shifts-from-consoles-to-mobile-gaming-as-its-main-platform/). The company has even starting porting assets from their digital media (video game) division to the gaming (gambling machines) division as shown in this video of MGS assets being repurposed for a new slots machine: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sUz-rSjcrIQ. Of note, this is exactly what Sega did in 2015.
tldr; Konami is no longer focused on the home gaming market.

The only positive I could find is the easy achievement score. Took me 30 minutes to get 100%. But to show you how lazy Konami is, even the achievement art is all the same (the E euro sign for everything).
