NHL 21 Closed Technical Test Available, Leave Your Feedback Here

For those of you that registered last month, the closed technical test for NHL 21 is available now. If you registered, you should have received an email with an invitational code to download it.

Since this is a Technical Test and not a beta, like previous years, the experience will be less representative of the final game. Players are not permitted to upload any screenshots or video, that also includes streaming the game.

Two modes are available the Closed Technical Test, Online Versus and World of Chel. Be sure to try out Practice Mode with your buddies or Free Skate around with your player and test out some of the new traits that have been made available.

The Club Finals Championship will also be active during this time, earn Rank Points by competing against other clubs in either 3v3 or 6v6 and climb the leaderboards to earn the top spot.

For those of you in the Closed Technical Test, try it out and post your impressions here, along with any feedback you would like to pass along to the development team, as they are looking to optimize gameplay, stability and tuning.

  1. Well to answer my own question I just got the email
For the technical test. 25.37 gb on Xbox. I will give impressions after I get some time with it. Also will report what modes are playable.
It's called a closed technical test, keyword being test, for a reason...
Anyways, for those that aren't aware, the servers are online. Feel free to post your impressions, feedback, etc. EA will be looking here, on the official forums, reddit, etc.
As mentioned in the OP, Online Versus and the World of Chel will both be available to play during the Closed Technical Test.
Ok played 1 CHEL game in practice mode. 3 v 3 and ur player locked as ur created player. Outdoors game. Very arcadey and felt the same as NHL 20. Then I played 2 online vs. the first guy(oilers) quit after I scored 2 goals. I think it was a kid by the way he was playing. Then I played me(Rangers) vs the leafs. Lost 3-1. It was fun but it felt the same as nhl 20. Like this may be the least the game has ever jumped 1 year to the next. The only thing diff I noticed was shots that get deflected by a stick go out of play more often and they look better(speed/fluttering ect.) Maybe we will see/feel more difference from last year in sim play vs the ai but I’m not getting my hopes up.

No offence to people that play those modes but I've already shelved the beta, can't play those arcade gimmicky modes.

Is there any offline modes to play in beta

    Me either.. what a bummer.
Played one online vs game.  I was the Flames vs Leafs.  I thought it was your basic NHL series gameplay.  I felt like every time I had the puck my opponent had 3 players pressuring my player and I couldn't do much without turning the puck over.  He had about 5 more minutes of attacking time.  I lost 6-4, which is a really high scoring game for me.  I scored a couple of slapshots, which was nice to see.   I let up a lot of one timer goals as usual.
I've been playing this series since 93 but I've never played online before, played one game tonight and it will be my last. What a terrible experience, it felt like it was in turbo mode, didn't look anything like hockey as my opponent skill sticked the crap out of me and I was helpless to do anything. Apart from a couple new goalie animations it doesn't feel like this game has changed at all. No interest in CHEL either so I've uninstalled already. Seriously, what was supposed to be different with this version other than the name?
Passing felt horrible, even when the onscreen marker showed me passing to the teammate I wanted it still went somewhere else half the time. I've found this to be a problem this whole generation. I enjoyed 20 with the slider settings I prefer, but see absolutely no reason to buy 21, it looks like EA has mailed in all their games this year.
Yeah, they are so proud about their "all-new" a.i. and full priced AAA game in general that they rather won't let even people to test it out before the purchase :(
What a morals, yet they are not ashamed to push all that woke political junk to our face. What a hypocrisy.
Here are my thoughts from the two versus games I played last night:
    - Poke checking felt better than 20 default, at least now the puck seemed to come loose when poking on it, in 20 it could take 3 or 4 times before it actually comes loose.
    - Checking is maybe a bit tweaked but I already saw many times where the puck carrier won't stumble at all, even when checked perfectly. For example, I had Tyler Johnson who is a really small player skating full speed along the board, being well checked through the boards by a bigger defenseman, he didn't even loose speed and continue like nothing happened, I scored on a 2-on-1 one timer after that. It should not have happened at all. Increased stumble threshold please.
    - It's still hyper speed up and down hockey. The game is way too fast to be able to have anything close to a realistic game. Player acceleration and puck carrier agility should at least be toned down.
Other than that and some new animations, I didn't see much change compared to 20 so far, but it was a pretty small sample. However, since I don't really like the default online settings right now, I'm not sure I will play many more games.

Well, none of this is any good at all really. And that's just sad. It's beyond time for EA to hang it up and hand over the license...

EA doesn’t own the licence. Literally anyone can pick up the nhl licence

I am In D1 in rivals in hut and constantly in the top 200. I enjoyed nhl 20 but I feel like I’m playing a carbon copy of it. After 3 online games I have failed to see any noticeable differences other then no one being able to pick off pass. As said above, this might be the smallest year over year improvements we have ever seen

Al, I also played 3 games so far on EASHL and Online versus. The game speed is way to high and hyperspeed like you said. So far as connections goes it was pretty ok, only 2 times there has been a short lag.
The game play feels almost identic to NHL 20 and I prefer to play with your sliders to get a realistic game feeling.
Some new animation and stick deflection is what I currently identified after a small starting sample size. Online mode is very arcade and passing is at super speed... my 2 cents
I figured this year's game would be pretty damn similar to NHL20 considering the cross-generation work being done (and COVID). I saw minor adjustments here and there in my one online versus game but the online versus game is such a terrible experience for the most part (guys just cheese) that it's not worth it. With the trainer on and the giant puck glow I just hate playing with all that on my screen.
I enjoyed NHL20 a lot and I'm sure the offline game is pretty similar, too. I'm excited to get the game because IMO it's a solid offline experience especially in franchise mode (which has faults but is very solid). I'm sure people here will complain quite a bit about the gameplay but I'm not really upset with it. It's fine. I wish ratings were more spread out but I did have a couple moments where I really felt my speed guys were speed guys and I blew by defenders.
I hope for the next-gen we get actual revamped goaltenders and some better atmosphere.
Also, I said it last year too but the new PBP guy is horrible. I get why they went in that direction but if you're going to do it, at least record a ton of variety and some good lines. Instead we get the same stuff over and over again, screamed at us for the entire game.

What are you talking about? You had like 2 weeks to register and everyone who registered got in.
It's not EA's fault you failed to sign up.
That being said - there isn't much difference from NHL 20. New dekes, new animations here and there but for the most part.. almost completely identical.

I think what he said is that we can't test any of the "AI improvement" that EA said they did to the game in a beta that only have online gameplay.

I mean proper offline demo, where you can really test the A.I. and make your own opinion, whether the improvements are worthy the money or not.
I think even EA get it, that's why they won't even people let to capture any footage from a game.
That's what is this pseudo "technical beta" about.

Let's perhaps not use this as an equivalency mate, it's not needed.
Not a fan of the new "spread V" for the goalie, why does his legs always go inside the post allowing the puck to go between his leg and the post? What happened to the spread V blocking both posts with the goalies legs out in front of the goal posts?

Agree, do not notice any diffrence

Player creation tools are all the same old stuff and with all the same heads and resources and likeliness, which is kind of sad.
I'm with those above mentioning no interest in the modes offered for the test. Played one 3 on 3 game, don't do online. Was really hoping for an offline, "regular" hockey game where the feedback would be useful in creating a better game for offline players.

I feel exactly the same as you.How can you test the a.i. when you are playing humans. I'll wait for the trial to come out, it's painful to play these modes.
I have played some Pro-Am games but nothing else really since I don't have Playstation Plus. Some of the animations look really good, however I did not play any Pro-Am from last season so may re-install 20 just to compare better, but I liked what I saw in regards to animations. It is quite hard to tell how this game will be due to that fact that it is played and tuned at such a high speed that I don't ever really play at so I am not sure if the game is fast or i am just slow. :)
Anyway, the one thing that still is frustrating as hell is how easily the CPU can remove the puck from me and turn around and skate away. I was coming in the left side with the the defender on my right. I was using the skill stick to keep the puck away from the defender however somehow it magically went right on his stick, without any sort of poke check, and he immediately started heading the other way. If they want to improve this game they need to get a physics major to explain how you can't poke check across your body, have the puck immediately attach to your stick, and then pull your stick through the opponents legs and start skating instantly at full speed the other way. Also, it is super frustration that a human player cannot do that at all.
Also, Pro-Am is just a deke fest and the goalies are horrible. I am not writing this game off yet because I understand it is a very early model, but I can clearly see that they have not made the AI any "smarter", they just can do things that we can't as human players. As well, our CPU teammates only get about half the skill and abilities of the CPU controlled opponents. For example, if I get caught out of position my CPU teammates continue to got to their spots without acknowledging that anything is out of the ordinary. This game is too X's and O's for the CPU. They need a lot more "if/then" coding to make it more organic.
Again, I know sliders help a lot but some of this is not going to be helped by sliders.

I played some games, do not recognize a big difference from the Gameplay to 20. Players catching high Pucks with the gloves is one new animation. Connection on the Servers sometimes very bad, but this doesn’t matter for me because I am an offline Franchise player only. Would be intressting to play an offline mode in the Beta. Let’s see what they present us for Franchise Player in this game.

He's right about the "woke political junk" thrown in everyone's face, speaking of what's not needed. (Go after the guilty racists all day long but don't presume it's the entire planet. Especially when EA allowed it to exist in the first place.)
I just want to play hockey, without being scolded by everyone, for everything, ever.
Is it clear for you Franchise only guys that we will have not a good Roster till end of January. AHL Season start is possible at 4th Dec. their need to pass the AHL waiver that they can move them into the game. Usually takes time about 1,5 month to add them.
I was so pumped to get the beta as hockey is my favorite sport. After about 5 minutes playing the online modes I lost all interest.Come on EA care about your offline players who made your game.

Yeah, it's going to be a tough year for rosters. With delayed starts and the typical various licensing hurdles it will likely take much longer than usual to get an EA roster that includes rookies, CHL to AHL moves, etc. Man, would it ever be the year for them to introduce roster share!
I signed up for the technical test beta as well. After downloading it, I played it once and then didn’t touch it again. Didn’t realize that it was closed, but now that I know, I’ll probably be deleting it from my PS4/external storage....

I don't know what kind of feedback they want when nothing has changed and with the limited modes you can play.Found these modes painful to play.Anytime I started to play I couldn't wait to quit. These modes bored me to tears.

Should have followed Pes 21 and just released a cheaper update instead of a full game.

This is the type of games as a service I can get behind for Sports games. I almost want to purchase PES and the 21 DLC to show my support for this model, even though I would never play it
