NBA Live 18: Here's What You Need to Know

Now that we’re over a week past release date, you may still be on the fence about whether NBA Live 18 is worth your time. That short answer is: yes. What follows is the longer answer:

Gameplay

Nothing else matters if you aren’t having fun on the hardwood. Everyone defines “fun” differently in this case, but that’s the ultimate question you are asking yourself: Is this game fun to play?

The answer, without question, is yes. To get this out of the way early, the on-court experience isn’t as realistic as NBA 2K. If that’s what you’re looking for here, you will be disappointed. But take it from someone (me) who is a big fan of the 2K series: there is still plenty of fun to be had here on the court.

Just because it isn’t as realistic doesn’t mean it’s not realistic at all. As I emphasized in my gameplay piece the other day, this isn’t NBA Jam or NBA Street. Live replicates the game of basketball well on the court, and I have had a lot of fun playing it.

There are some drawbacks, though. Plays at the rim, whether it’s a dunk or a jump hook, feel canned and pre-determined, leaving you with little control. Icon passing is a bit wonky. And computer help defense could use some work.

On the other hand, the dribble stick is implemented well. Jump shots feel and look nice, complete with a shot meter that is effective, even if it’s a bit of an eye sore. The one-on-one system, where you try to find the right angle as your defender tries to cut you off, is implemented well and leads to some intense battles that are a lot of fun.

So yes, although it is a mixed bag and there are some things that need fixing, I still find myself having a lot of fun with this game.

The One

As I wrote the other day, this is the best that Live has to offer. EA absolutely nailed the career mode here and it provides a lot of replay value. The RPG-like leveling up system is really well done and provides a fresh take on sports career modes. I do wonder whether it will get stale at a certain point as you are focused on only a few key areas that affect your overall rating. But for now, at least, it keeps me coming back for more.

The One is broken into two sides: the streets and the league. The league seems light on features, but if you’re looking to guide your player through the ranks of the NBA, then you’ll be able to do just that. Given the shortcomings of the franchise mode, this is the best way to go about playing a franchise, so to speak.

The streets is where it’s at, though. Unfortunately, you are limited to five-on-five games, but they are a lot of fun. There are several courts to choose from, as well as plenty of offline and online challenges to conquer. If you’re looking for a reason to purchase NBA Live 18, The One is the one.

Other Modes Lacking

That said, if you’re not a fan of The One, then you’ll likely find yourself limited to play now as the franchise mode is borderline unplayable. It is chock full of bugs and shortcomings that make me wonder whether EA would’ve been better leaving it off completely. The marketing campaign has rightly focused on The One, but it’s a bit misleading to advertise a franchise mode that is so bare bones. If and when some of these bugs are patched, I’ll have to give it some more run. But for now, I see little reason to go back.

Ultimate Team seems to work fine. The layout isn’t great and, combined with sluggish menus found throughout the game, it can be a chore to move from screen to screen. But if you’re willing to work through that, there appears to be a lot of replay value here as well. There are plenty of challenges to complete, along with featured ones from Live that will change throughout the year.

Final Thoughts

NBA Live 18 has been a very pleasant surprise for me so far. Going in, I honestly wasn’t expecting much. And even though I’ve referenced several bugs and shortcomings — including some head scratchers like the awful franchise mode and the lack of any user roster editing — the game is still a lot of fun. If nothing else, as a fan of basketball video games, you should be rooting for Live to succeed. Competition is a great thing and pushes all companies to do better. Live definitely has a solid base here, and I’ll be excited to see where we are at a few weeks down the road with some patches and slider tweaks.

What about you guys? Now that we’re over a week in, how do you feel about NBA Live 18? What do you like? What areas need improvement? Let us know in the comments.

  1. Brandon, thanks for the review. But NBA Live 18 doesn't need praise. The EA team and devs have shown no interest in informing those who shelled out $60+ (on faith) believing that they were getting a complete product. I am an everyday reader of OS and have not missed visiting the site daily for years, and I rarely ever make my voice heard... Lately, I visit the Forum daily to see if there's any news regarding NBA Live 18 roster UPDATES and -- there's nothing to report. I really want NBA Live to success because I love the gameplay and visuals, but I also want the ROSTER updated before I dive in further. I bought NBA 2K 18 along with NBA Live 18, and in1 to 2 more days, I will decide if NBA Live 18 goes on eBay so I can recoup some money. I can not use it if there is no roster update. Please, Brandon, OS, don't let NBA Live 18 team off the hook for their incredibly poor customer support.
I'm having a blast with the game, although I'm really struggling to make jumpers on the higher difficulty levels, where there seems to be little or no room for error with the shot meter.  What I love about Live is that the controls are so responsive.  I never feel like I can't control what my guy is doing, and there's never any latent or unregistered inputs like I have experienced with 2k.  The 1v1 interactions are fantastic and as a result I find defense to be really fun and engaging.
Hopefully they continue to patch the game, I've been happy with what they've accomplished so far.  I would really like to be able to use the street courts for other modes than 'The One' (Rucker Park scrimmage/shootaround anyone?), and I feel like there's definitely miles of improvement they could make to the passing game, but overall I'm really enjoying my experience, even more so knowing it only cost me $40 and the game isn't "pay to do everything" like some other games.  It's pretty fun playing against the CPU as well, I'm liking the AI so far.
I can see younger kids/teens enjoying Live more than 2k.  anyone who's looking for a deep, game of ball, with the in's and outs of basketball strategy, this isn the game for you. you will get bored very quickly.     I played it a few times at a relatives house and that was enough for me.    not saying its a  bad game, just wont be challenging or  deep enough for my tastes in the long run.

your literally saying its a bad game lol

    I disagree with this.
    Most animations have various outcomes.
For example, most animations have a no contact playout and also one that changes if you get bumped. The shots going in or missing are not pre-determined based on the animation either. Likewise, foul calls.
On top of that, you can also press shoot mid shot to change 'most' of the shot animations into double clutches or other unnatural shots.
Still a nice write-up and great to see the game getting praise and being enjoyed, despite its shortcomings.
I've been very happy with the game. With some slider adjustments, it plays very well. I was hesitant to pre order it but the 40 dollar price point was a kicker for me. Its the first time since 2010 I have had 2 good basketball titles. Admittedly I am playing Live for The One and couch co-op and 2K for Association but with a trade in or a sale, I think both are very good purchases.

LOL...... just saying it isnt deep enough for my tastes.
We are on Operation Sports cause most of us take our sports gaming experience seriously. Cant speak for others, but I want my sports gaming experience as sim as possible. to me that is fun.
I actually love the shot meter, and hot/cold streaks. Hopefully, those things stay the same in future live games to come. The best thing about the shot meter is that it takes skill to get a perfect release, and that I don't have to worry about shot timing of different jumpshots, it's perfect imo.
Live feels more realistic than 2k. Live feels more like real basketball on both sides of the ball. I have both games (this is my first year buying both games, stopped buying Live games after 09, and I was all 2k since then), but I've found Live to be much more enjoyable thus far. I'm a sim player, and with sliders, Live has given me a basketball experience that is incredibly real-feeling and enjoyable at the same time.
Each possession in Live has me glued to the screen. The gameplay is a perfect blend of user skill, playing ratings, and basketball IQ.
The shot meter is A++++. Shooting in this game is incredibly satisfying. It's addicting. Very well done. Perfect balance of shot IQ, player ratings, and user skill.
The defensive system is very well done as well, as is the defensive AI. Definitely an A here.
The movement system, dribbling system, are excellent. Layups are gorgeous. A-
Players look and play like they do in real life for the most part. Id give them a B+ in this area.
Overall gameplay is a B+. Or about an 8 out of 10. Some rough edges, and it is somewhat raw, but it excels in several key areas. It's addicting. It's fun. And the replay value is very high. Very good basketball game.
2k's gameplay seems more like a chore. It feels like you're running a CPU simulation. It's hard to get into. Wasn't always like that, but this year that's what it feels like tbh. At least to me. It feels like the only satisfying part of 2k18 is the box score at the end, that you pieced together. But the gameplay itself is.... dare I say boring? Just feels too predictable and too repetitive. Pretty? yes, kind of... idk... see it just seems off to me. If it's not fun, something is wrong. I mean it's basketball. And 2k18 just hasnt been a fun basketball game in my experience.
I'm not the only one who feels that way. I will continue to play both however... but as of right now, Live is the better game this year by a significant margin.
    Good article.
I feel like NBA LIVE represents basketball well in many ways too. Loving The One, but I haven't gotten much into the 5 on 5 gameplay because I feel like it lacks intangibles. Between all the canned game play in the paint, lack of offense run by teams...It's tough for me to get invested...I feel like I am watching the same couple of sequences play out....I don't fear the Rockets are going to space the floor and kill me behind the line....I'm preparing for CP3, Harden attempting to barrel into the paint and dumping it down to Capela when they're stuck to hit hooks he has no business hitting.
That's not to say the game completely lacks dynamic sequences at times, but I would love to see this focused on going forward.

you are right about 2k being more sim. but here is where your argument kind of breaks down.
give the controllers to a 5 year old with an EA game, kind of tell them what to do and they will remain competitive against the AI. this is Madden and I can see this true with Live.
try doing the same with a 2k game, and watch them get exposed immediately.
not knocking Live, but in the end Live will be fun in spurts, not longevity. just my opinion.
pick up and play, ease of use advantage goes to Live. and it is a pretty looking and sounding game.
it would also be wise for 2k to reinstate their arcade, casual, sim modes in future installments.

You must be crazy.... NBA LIVE has always had the upper hand when it comes to outright smart basketball gameplay.... Dating back to god knows when but I'll tell you this: why do you think kids gravitate toward NBA 2K in the first place?? Wait, I'll answer that for you... Because there's hand holders implemented in game to help those that know how to make a run or matter of fact, that don't know what making a run is... NBA LIVE has always " ALWAYS " made you do the appropriate whether the gameplay was there or not... Don't lie to these people boy!!

Yeah 24th, after that big PATCH drop, they'll address this like they always do... I wonder why they always have to patch the CPU though? That's always been the case since before patching was a thing...

Yeah, I kinda agree with this. To me Live is more like Call of Duty, and 2k is more like Battlefield (I believe BF is by EA tho).
2k has a bit more of a learning curve, especially this year. They made a big jump this year with difficulty. It's a bit deeper and more detailed.
Default sliders are better in 2k. I haven't played on default Live sliders since the demo so maybe they're improved, idk.

Tbh, I got both games because both require smart basketball to win this year. The CPU is really good in both games, more human like than ever.
And kids gravitate towards 2k because of the online modes and because it was the more dominant game of this decade.
Live is really underrated this year, and many of the reviews come off as condescending tbh. It's always compared to 2k. And that's from someone who is a fan of both titles.
You can say 2k is better than Live on the 2k forums, but it's like it's forbidden that you say Live is better than 2k on the Live forums.
It's annoying and it's a huge turnoff. Thinking about leaving the community here because of the double standards. It's just a video game ffs.
    The article brought up 2k.
I mean seriously, no one has a problem when the first thing the article's review said right off the bat that Live isn't as realistic as 2k, but as soon as someone disagrees (god forbid someone say the opposite) it's all "hush hush" smh.
I go on the 2k forums and everyone trash's live without a problem. It's just funny.

not making this a 2k vs Live debate.
however, what your post points out, is that, 2k is the Gold standard of basketball games, if not all sports titles.
Live is good, just wont be getting it. ill play when I go to my relative's house.
if you feel that Live is better, thats cool. the fact that we are having this debate is a good thing. Only other sports game where you can have this debate is with soccer. every other sports is one title from AAA developers.

God definitely knows when. Cause I sure dont. Live lost its way way back in the early 2000's, when I realized Jason Kidd could throw ally oops all game long from 3/4 court.
Glad they are finding their way again. Maybe they'll build a new crop of loyalists from this generation forth. Im sure if they stick with it, theyll surpass 2k. just like 2k surpassed them. That's the nature of business. However, Im way beyond the point of supporting 2 titles, no time.
no more 2k vs Live from me. just had to get my point across. Happy gaming

Exactly... Your opinion should be VOID on these forums from here on out! You don't even have the game.. You haven't even dug deep to figure out what this year's title holds... This is a reach and to say your SUSPECT is an understatement!!! People suck at life in general only to embarrass themselves for kicks..smh!

All good man. As a basketball fan, I'm glad we have two games competing again. It will foster innovation and the best product possible.
And this is the first year in a while where I feel like there really isn't a consensus best basketball game. Or at the very least, it seems like there is a legitimate argument. Both are good games, quite different, and it seems like a lot of it comes down to preference.

wasnt going to respond to your childish/immature post, but i have nothing better to do this evening.
never said you didnt know anything. reread all my posts. I said the game is fun, just not my choice for long term enjoyment. you have another opinion. I did not bash you or any other person about their opinions.
It doesnt take me a long time to decide if I like a game. I did not like 2k17 last year and clearly stated that in the 2k forums. but due to 2k's track record, I knew this year I would give them the benefit of the doubt. they showed and proved..
I also, only stated the year I made the switch from Live, I never question peoples decision. we can have a healthy debate, which is what i thought we were doing.
You lobbed the first insults, not I.
i came here based on yes the limited time I have, but yes I still have some time with the title. enough to say that it isnt for me.

You enjoy Live, I like the other title.....that's it.. get it... very simple.
    take it lite..homie!!!!!

I like how you back tracked without justifying why you're on a NBA LIVE THREAD posting without a copy!!! Sad to say the least!! Won't even get into how your pleading your case and putting the blame on me when we're only conversing about basketball video gaming! Smh... I'm immature because I caught you with your hands in the cookie jar and again your post are VOID... Go buy a copy..Hell, they are practically giving them away on most NBA LIVE social media outlets... Try it! The demo or couple hours at your buddies won't do it justice!
I recently bought Live and the thing is now already collecting dust. It was fun for a couple of hours but the gameplay in no way holds up to 2k. Sorry if you don't feel the same way but sitting there insulting those who have a difference of opinion  doesn't just validate what you're saying. I tried giving Live a chance this year and after 2 days of playing it I realized I wasted my money. They made strides this year but 2k greatly improved on what was a mediocre game in 2k17.
Like someone else stated, Live is a pick up and play game you can enjoy in short spurts. 2k is a much deeper game that requires a little strategy and can keep you invested long term because of the depth in the game.

I have to disagree here, I’ve been getting tired of teams doing the same thing every game...attack the paint. I have both and play both games, take a team like the Pelicans, Davis pulls up and shoots midrange and even 3’s in real life...you won’t see any of that in live. I’d hoped it weren’t true, but the shot charts are the proof in the pudding. In one quarter on 2k there were about 7-8 midrange shots by the pelicans, on live if there were 3-4 midrange taken the whole game that was a lot.
EA has to get to work on this, if you pack the paint...they will shoot 3’s but pretty much only 3’s. If you play any other type of defense they just attack the paint.
Live would be 10x better if they could get the cpu to play a better game.
