NBA Live 18 Features the WNBA - Watch Trailer & Gameplay Footage

EA has officially announced NBA Live 18 will feature all 12 WNBA teams and players, when it launches on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 in September. The WNBA will be available in WNBA Play Now (including head-to-head online), and teams and player skills have been specifically balanced to reflect the unique playstyle of the league and skills of its players. This is the first time the official WNBA’s roster of teams and players will appear in a video game, and will be available only in NBA LIVE 18.

“We are extremely proud to partner with the WNBA and the Women’s National Basketball Players Association (WNBPA) on this groundbreaking occasion,” said NBA LIVE Executive Producer Sean O’Brien. “The WNBA is home to some of the most incredible athletes on the planet, and we’ve been working hard to integrate them into our game in an authentic and meaningful way. This is only a taste of what we have in store, and look forward to working with the league on more great integrations in the franchise in the future.”

“We are delighted to collaborate and make history with EA as NBA LIVE 18 becomes the first video game to feature the WNBA’s full roster of teams and players,” said WNBA President Lisa Borders. “With EA’s expertise and ingenuity, the game will provide a terrific platform to showcase the players and the league, enabling fans to experience the WNBA in a new, exciting way.”

“On behalf of the players, we believe that combining technology and entertainment is a powerful way to not only recognize and value our brand of basketball but to also increase fan connectivity and engagement,” said Nneka Ogwumike, WNBPA President/LA Sparks.

In order to incorporate the league’s teams and players, the NBA LIVE 18 team conducted head scans of star athletes like Maya Moore, Brittney Griner, Diana Taurasi, Tina Charles, Sylvia Fowles, Alisha Gray, Chelsea Gray, Jonquel Jones, and Alyssa Thomas, and held motion capture sessions with 2017 WNBA Draft first overall pick, Kelsey Plum, among others. Additionally, game creators fine-tuned player ratings and skill moves in order to present the league and its stars in the most authentic way possible. Fans will be able to experience the best of the WNBA when NBA LIVE 18 launches this Fall.

  1. Kudos to EA for getting this in the game. There are probably many that won't play with the WNBA teams but to see this added into the game is a great move.
Dope, they used a couple of my suggestions, I'm super geeked to play with Mya Moore, hopefully we can used them in the Pro Am and Drew Leagues.
I probably won't get this game unless I enjoy the demo, and even then, I'll wait for a price drop to like $19.99, but this is cool nonetheless.
I'll definitely be paying attention to this game even if I likely won't buy it.
So is the game still cancelled or not? lol
This is a bomb tho. This is big to women and the niche fans of the WNBA. This is alot of extra work for probably not alot of praise for Live. They are really showing they put the gamer first with a move like this.
Will these women have face scans and ect?
Yo this is cool!!! Kinda bummed we don't get to run a Franchise with these teams but I'm very happy they are in the game!

This is cool and I've wanted this since the PS2 days, I'm disappointed though cause I have a feeling this will end up like FIFA. Incorporating a Franchise mode and career mode limited to the 12 WNBA teams would've been dope and allowed for a slightly different experience. Ah well

Honestly i dont even want to watch the WNBA, So id have zero interest in playing it.
Ea is definately trying tho. *shrugs*

Myself, I don't subscribe to cable so I don't have access to the WNBA. Only watched two games (all-star game, and one of the finals game) when it was actually broadcast on network over the air tv on abc.
Even so, this peaked my interest. But as an only "play now" game makes me go "darn it." Has it even been confirmed to only be a "plan now/exhibition" mode?
EDIT: In other words, despite my real world minimal interest in the WNBA (in addition to not really having a local WNBA team to follow), this could actually get me to buy the game. More details needed.
EDIT 2: Oh yeah, I like the woman's hair physics.
Cool addition, almost seems like it could be a waste of resources though. Much better that it's included on Live 18 though. Would have surely failed as its own title.

Good move by EA and the Live team. They are putting together a product that stands apart from 2K, and that's a good thing. If we're going to have 2 basketball games out in the marketplace, I don't want to be choosing between 2 that do basically the same exact thing.
This is pretty cool. I'm not typically interested in the WNBA but utilizing the teams in a video game sounds kind of fun. And if this mode ever gets fleshed out a little, it might even go a little ways toward drawing positive attention and recognition to the women's league.
Just pulling this out of a hat, but I don't think I'd mind a Franchise mode that allowed gamers the option of using the city-affiliated WNBA team during the offseason. I think it could be a fun respite to run a San Antonio Spurs franchise then run with the San Antonio Stars for a few games during June and July.
I think this is awesome that EA is doing this. A couple of years ago FIFA added the woman's teams in and my daughter played with them a ton. Yeah she liked playing with FC Barcelona better but it was nice having that option. Professional woman's hoops is basketball in it's purest form. Yeah you don't have all the flashy dunks but that's just one thing that separates it from the men's.
I'm happy that they added the WNBA. It's a great move for EA and the WNBA itself. More exposure for them because there are some really good female players in the league.

    It's not.
No matter how many people worked on it, or how long it took to get this to reality, was time and resources well spent.
Good move by EA. This is all due to competition...it's what drives innovation to the maximum. I wish we had a rivalry of this magnitude in football gaming. I miss the Madden vs NFL2k days...great strides were made on both sides during that era.
DOPE! Fellas please dont sleep on the WNBA!?! the league is not where it needs to be YET, but A LOT of those women can ball - straight up. i remember we ran a few pick up games with a RESERVE for the liberty back in the day and she was out there HOOPIN with college and overseas ballers. All she wanted was to be respected as a hooper, not the girl who could ball but just a baller.
also the womens game is a lot more cerebral than the mens game and theyre better at the fundamentals. its similar to overseas ball. more about taking the most efficient shot rahter than the highlight. i respect it EA.
I know the womens game isnt everybodys cup of tea, but ive learned tons of basketball from women. my first coach was a woman (MOM DUKES!!) lmao
good move EA - now if were able to make female created players as well, GAME CHANGER. Tons of women play 2k and Live, this would absolutley give them the opportunity all us guys have to create a player to our likeness.

Exactly! WNBA is only 20 years old. It's super young. MMA is also young. WMMA is also younger than both combined. The new crop of stars are amazing to watch and I live in Phoenix off and on and we always went to the Mercury games (why not? they are so inexpensive). Always had fun. A lot of talented vets and the new stars are so good. The WNBA will get its respect sooner than later. The Sparks/Lynx finals was thrilling especially the last game. I hope this does give this league more exposure because the WNBA is awesome.
I wouldn't of cared to play this mode if it was only User Vs. AI. But it's been confirmed on EA's blog that this WNBA mode is online only (H2H). So it has my interests to play with in the game and against female gamers! lmao

good addition for the LIVE TEAM.
however, Ive never seen any women in the WNBA ball as fluid as these animations in the game.   Its like they just slapped on the women's faces on the men's animations/graphics engine.
In my opinion, the women players are more ridgid, and less graceful on the court.
My sister and three of her friends are real female ballers, and they've played Live and 2k every year since they've been growing up.
This announcement made them happy, especially if the facescan app allows female face scans, it's going to be nice to see male and females in the park.
Good job EA and this game is already a day 1 purchase, can't wait for the demo...good or bad it's not going to change my purchase decision.
Should have happen with both games years ago.
Cool addition, probably never use them just like classic teams.

This is why representation matters. Glad to see the WNBA in Live, I'll definitely check it out just being a fan of all things basketball. Reminds me of the women teams in the old March Madness games & the 6 WNBA stars players on NBA Street Homecourt. (Swoopes, Leslie, Taurasi, Bird, L. Jackson, T. Catchings)
I think people should stop saying I hope it appeals to female gamers, it should appeal to people who love basketball period.
Just as women watch the normal NBA, there are a lot of men who follow WNBA and just support for the sport as a whole regardless of the gender.
If you are a lover of Basketball, this should be a great feature!
No different than men who create male and female characters in Mass Effect or choose a female character in a fighter.
Love the game regardless and respect the additions that are added.
Looking forward to this. Enjoying playing GM so will be interesting when I check on a players feelings towards the franchise and see it listed as 'fine'. /crap joke
Seriously this is awesome and looking forward to creating my daughter as the next superstar.
    Yeah...THAT Guy
I'll wait for a price drop to like $19.99

Going off of the past two Live releases, it will be that price by Black Friday.

I mean this is great for the WNBA... but its own game would have never have sold.
They are trying to compete with 2k, I really don't think this is the way to go about it. But it's a double edge sword because if I had a daughter, i'd purchase this so she could play with the women players she looks up to. So good on EA.

I'll disagree. I don't think Live is really close to 2k for the NBA. This is a great opportunity to capture an untapped audience.

I'm not going to act like the WNBA being in the game makes a shred of difference to me, because it doesn't. Unlike FIFA & Women's soccer, which can be enjoyable to watch, the WNBA is something i'll never tune in for. That being said, i'm more focused on getting to see some gameplay in action in this video, even if it's the women's models and I must say I've now grown concerned and less optimistic than I was a month ago. I was pumped for Live this year after seeing things so far but the gameplay looks a little wonky to me in this video. At about the :40 mark Della Donne is posting up and then comes out to set a screen and the ball handler proceeds to look like she was about to go behind her back with the ball and then brings it back to the front as if the ball is glued to her hand. And then around 1:55 when Della Donne was driving and pulling up, it just looked jerky and wonky to me. Hopefully the demo plays better because all this video did was get me worried that Live is still going to look and feel like the Live/Elite attempts they've had the past few years.

I have no interest in the WNBA and I really think the time and resources could have been better spent elsewhere.

Maybe, maybe not. But from a marketing standpoint it gives them better publicity than say trying to market franchise mode features.
I am all for women being in sports games, they play video games too and should be represents as playable character, but lets not proclam this to be anything other than what it is EA attempt to get more sales, and if this does fails or if like 2K EA tracks the amount of people who actually play the WNBA modes it may be the last time we see women incorporated in the game, as people have states this is addtional time, man/women power and money that EA is hoping pays off.
WNBA players make little to no money compared to other professional athletes because honestly most people don't care about the WNBA. A few of you do free, but I think most of us are happy about the move because we think women deserve to be in video games, but it doesn't really mean much to us because we don't watch the WNBA. If we are honest this is a political correct move, and we all hope it gains Live some support. But honestly I'm like the majority of the people in the world and just don't care about the WNBA. It's a 12 team sport, where Star players can't even make enough money here to meet go overseas to play.
I hope it helps the game but it's honestly no big deal in my opinion. One thing 2k doesn't have but honestly one thing MOST people won't care about (I know some of you do)
This installment is honestly the Jumpstart that the WNBA needs for exposure. Being in a game can surely increase revenue and viewers of the sport.

JUMP Start, the WNBA has been around since 1996 and is slowly dying, the Panicle of the WNBA was during its creating which was just after that amazing olympics with Rebecca Lobo, Lisa Leslie, and Sheryl Swoopes.

This. I have always been a competitive gaming junkie, after playing fifa 12 I fell in love with that game and started playing some teams that I had never watched. I then found Zlatan Ibrahimovich from that game and started following his career closely. To this day I still follow PSG and Man U because of his moves to those teams and the appreciation I found for other players. I am now a hardcore futbol supporter and have to purchase Bein sports so I can follow the spanish and french leagues. If not for the exposure in fifa I would probably still be just a casual observer of the sport. I am in the same boat again after playing the NHL series for a couple of years. You can get to know the players and their attributes and it peaks interest to see how they perform IRL. I am a complete basketball junkie but honestly don't have time to follow the WNBA as I love all things NBA and am a college men's and women's coach. I am excited to see if this game will give me more of an appreciation for some of the talented women in that league.
This is the only reason i'm buying this game.
To bad they don't have legend WNBA players also in the game. I wanted to play as Chamique Holdsclaw.

They are trying but the audience in the US is just not there to make the product profitable, watch a game most of the seats are empty, most of the Women have to play overseas or work regualr jobs during the off season to make a living. A few years back Diana Taurasi decided to skip a season because the international team she played for during the off season offered to pay her not to play for the WNBA so she could be rested when their seaon started. I am all for WNBA getting recognized and existing but lets not pretend that if there was a true market for a WNBA game it would have existed already, this is a markating gimmic by EA that could either succeed or fail if they dont get a good bump in sales.

I don't get how this is solely a marketing gimmick. It's a league. There are WNBA fans. Some of them may buy the game solely because the WNBA is in the game.
It's just a feature just like any other feature and it's a feature that the other game doesn't have. It's smart given that the other game is so far ahead of it right now.

I never said it was not a smart move on their part to include it in the base NBA game, when the game is released the WNBA season will be over so they wont need to add any additional support with Rosters or rating etc.. but if their sales are not impacted with this addition do you think it will be included in next years game ?

WNBA probably had to pay NBA Live to get more exposure, not the other way around. Can we be honest that there are more fans of rugby in America than fans of the WNBA? (of course live paid them something. Point is, this gives the WNBA more exposure so I believe it's accurate that it will cost them very little)

I'm pretty sure it cost them nothing but the man hours it takes to create the new art and maybe a few trips to WNBA games to do scans (they have a mobile rig that can do the scans on the go)
The WNBA is 100% owned by the NBA and given that the NBA wants to promote the WNBA in anyway it can, I doubt it charged EA to use its WNBA license
