MLB The Show 21 Details Won't Arrive Until 2021

The cover athlete and announcement trailer for MLB The Show, typically arrives around this time of year. However, this isn’t your typical year. With the bulk of the team working from home, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the game possibly coming to additional platforms, as early as next year, it’s understandable to see San Diego Studio has their hands full.

With the World Series possibly wrapping up tomorrow or Wednesday, the team has announced they are gearing up for next year and will share more details on MLB The Show 21 in 2021.

Spring training for the MLB 2021 season begins on February 27, 2021 and all 30 MLB teams are scheduled to play when the official season begins on April 1, 2021.

With all of that said, it’s always fun to speculate…

Could we be looking at a possible MLB The Show 21 delay or are we just grasping at straws? Let the speculation begin, as we hope to hear something in VERY EARLY 2021 *crosses fingers*, to end it all.

  1. But the guy who wrote that Forbes article linked to in that "Clocks Ticking" thread said we should be worried. I mean he had all that inside information (zero inside information) and hard facts (speculation based on reading tea leaves?)
Anyway can't wait for '21. Ready to start season 3 of my fictional Padres franchise.
any word on 22? clock is ticking on that one also too as well.
but seriously, I turned back the clock and been playing the hell out of Show 14. I'll hit 15 & 16 too over next 2-3 months to keep my mind off 21.
My inside source (a haunted ouija board) predicts that The Show 22 will be VR exclusive and will plug directly into your brain via a new Sony peripheral. This has been verified by a credible insider. (broken magic 8 ball)
we never know any news about it till after the superbowl next year I doubt streams will happen though because of the pandemic unless it's some Zoom thing
I am sure most of the info will be what has changed in DD mode
Crazy how next gen sports games are looking so far. MLB we are getting news later than normal. Madden has like no news yet when you would think it would be a day 1 game on next gen and that is only like 2 weeks away. NHL didn't do a next gen game this year meaning NHL 2022 is likely going to be when it first goes to next gen.

The only worrying next gen sports games are from EA. There two biggest franchises Madden and FIFA have been radio silent. NBA2k is at least attempting to make a splash from the jump. If you like soccer PES said this year's game is basically half priced roster update but will be rebuilt with new engine in 22. The Show team is saying hey we arent releasing info until 2021 so no need to speculate right now just enjoy 20 news will come soon.
we never know any news about it till after the superbowl next year...

doesn't sound like this time we're even going to hear what the cover holds till next year.

I would love a season update similar to PES for half price. Pretty much like what we got this year but cheaper.

Honestly I couldn't agree more. Whatever their choice is, they've already made the decision long ago. But if their was ever a year to just phone it in and get started extra early on the next year's entry, this is the one.

NHL doesn’t belong in this conversation. They’ve yet to even give us 4K HDR on current gen.
The only thing I will ever expect is for the devs to advertise DD as much as humanly possible. Nothing else matters, because it doesn't generate revenue. In modern gaming there is literally no point in making the best game because it'll be (basically) the only game. Quantity over quality is what signs paychecks.

At least gameplay is solid between the lines. The oldest sports title can't say that.
Keep saying, I don't care if the make paid content for franchise. SIGN ME UP!! I'll buy the retro uni's I want. I'll pay for the Kingdome. Or a stadium creator. I've got a blank check in hand for an external roster editor. If this is the only way I'll get those things, FINE!
I have a theory, it could be a reach but hey never know.
Reason why they are waiting til 2021 to announce stuff is because they want to wait til after holiday season. They wouldn’t want anyone to switch if it comes to Xbox with new systems coming out. So best wait to secure those sales for Sony systems is not announce that it’s coming to Xbox and any details until 2021.
Could also be that they don't even know the rules of the league yet. DH in the national league is up in the air. New playoff formats possibly, are the going to keep starting extra innings with a man on second? Ect. It's tough to put pen to paper and commit when the rules seem so malleable.

With SDS probably still working from home, I'm not totally confident that 21 will even release for other platforms this upcoming year. I'm thinking the remote work and their current team size will have them delay releasing on Xbox, Switch, etc until 2022.
I feel like PS5 is really the only realistic thing they could finish with them being a first party Sony studio. It's my belief that they've had the PS5 dev kit pretty early, and were able to start migrating to this platform.
    Just my two cents.
I think the systems don’t differ that much from eachother like they used to in the past (ps2/ps3 era) so it shouldn’t take too much time/work. The problem I foresee is that Xbox wants their games to run on all xbox platforms. Then again SDS also have to deal with the ps4 and ps4 pro....man I don’t know haha.

I wouldn't think developers would have to do any separate work when it comes to PS4 & the Pro. I wouldn't think. *shrug*

I am on board with this 100% as well. Unfortunately, I think we are in the minority of the overall sports gaming customer.

    Hard to say.
Looking at the popularity of pay-to-play modes like MUT and Diamond Dynasty, I'm not so sure.
.. or what if paying was the only way to get those things? (a stadium creator, specific uni's, ect) And what if 'paying' just meant using stubs?
... won't matter if there is a PC release. This stuff will take care of itself.

I am not so sure I will be rushing out to get a PS5 console for the MLB The Show 2021 game. The first year of a new console release is usually underwhelming. So I am not expect much in 2021. But I won't blame SDS either if there isn't a whole lot of new content in their 2021 game. These are crazy illogical times we find ourselves in.
But time may prove me wrong. Haha :wedgie:
    Few things:
    1. The jump to PS3 was incredible. I still remember looking at David Wright's player model and even though I hate the NYM, I HAVE To get a PS3. This game looked so incredible.
    2. The jump to PS4 was equally amazing. Stadium atmosphere absolutely popped. It was the sole reason I got a PS4.
    3. The consumer got SO much value from the decade long OS/SCEA relationship (2007-2017). Roster sharing? I believe that started with the Show. Gameplay tweaks, stadium additions, mode enhancements and ideas...tons of what got in the game came from the community days SCEA hosted. I remember Knight165 and that SCEA tweaked Manager Only Mode (MoM) purely because of him and his work on the OSFM roster. SCEA saw how the OS roster and the community here benefited their game.
So...PS5 launch title? OS isn't what it used to be and SCEA has followed suit like other AAA titles and working on microtransaction modes. So then, I really don't expect SCEA to break the mold of what they've done the past few years. Expand DD, keep the status quo on the rest. It's sad too, I miss being hyped to get a baseball game and spending hours in edit player mode while playing franchise.

I really think they went out with a bang with 20.
Adding service time. kind half-cooked turkey with the team rebranding, but thats something people had fun with. Gameplay continues to improve, and every version is widely viewed as better than its predecessor since '17.
It may not be a giant leap for '21, but there's no reason to believe they won't continue to make incremental progress, as they have throughout the PS4 gen.

I truly believe that this game plays very well on the field. If all they did was improve the graphics and most importantly the atmosphere for Next Gen, I would be extremely happy.
Glitches happen in every video game but out of a 162 game schedule, if say 130 games play without a glitch, that is good enough for me.

I'm not one that lives and dies with graphics. I just can't relate, being a dinosaur that grew up on NES and SNES.
Load times are the draw for me right now... thats it really.. 8k possibilities????.. seriously?? Nobody is broadcasting in 4k yet! I have just recently bought an OLED tv. I'm a techie, don't get me wrong. But at this point, 8k is for the guy that spends $3600 on a CPU. Well and good for that gamer. But how much of the gaming audience is that? 2%??? Thats your target demographic??? C'mon! I just can't take that seriously. Not for the masses.
With the above, I really feel like this gen is being rushed. But I do get the hardware has outlived its lifecycle. And I respect and appreciate that this console gen will finally rival PCs. If not for that, I wouldn't even consider buying this gen.
Anyway.. as far as MLBtS; I am confident SDS isn't going to screw this up. (unlike the other sports)
Optimist; '21 releases on PC... and Pandoras Box is unleashed on the masses.
