MLB The Show 21
How SDS Can Improve the 'Full Minors' Feature for MLB The Show 21
When SDS announced the “Full Minors” feature coming to MLB The Show 20, it came with massive hype from the community. After all, it was a big moment for the community as a whole since this had been a hub for the “full minors” before it was officially picked up by SDS. Now, in year two for MLB The Show 21, the question becomes how does it improve from here?
In general, baseball has seen a paradigm shift in the last decade. Prospects are valued more than ever. In fact, I would argue roughly half of the fan bases in Major League Baseball are forced to drink from the farm-fountain, clinging to the hopes their small market team will succeed one day.
There’s something hip about being in on a prospect before the rest of the world, let alone before that player makes it big in The Show. Simply put, prospects are a big ticket item right now and San Diego Studio securing the rights to their likeness and use in MLB The Show 20 was a huge deal.
But while the feature was welcomed with full hearts and open arms, it fell short in a number of areas. It’s an area of opportunity for growth for MLB The Show 21, and it shouldn’t be a tough feature to knock out of the park.
Improving Full Minors For MLB The Show 21
In 2020, SDS announced a partnership with RidinRosters, a pillar of the Operation Sports community and one of the premier roster creators in the business. The goal was simple and clear. Help create a roster for launch that mirrored actual Opening Day rosters for big league organizations. Unfortunately, the roster did not quite hit that benchmark.
To RidinRosters’ credit, the information, created players, and everything they presented to SDS was probably fantastic. Every year that group pushes out a product that seems to be close to perfect. But after presenting that package to SDS, It is then up to them to get those changes into the final launch build. That seemingly didn’t happen.
The RidinRosters team worked tirelessly after launch to get another file for the community to download, and that was out within a week. It was a huge improvement.
In essence, from this chair, what SDS pushed out on launch day was a roster file full of top 100 prospects, several of which had new face scans and artist renderings. That was incredible, but it fell short of the language promised in pre-launch streams where words like “accurate” and “comprehensive” were used.
MLB The Show 21 should be a marked improvement over the Full Minors feature from ’20. For example, we know a huge batch of face scans from spring training 2020 never made it into the 2020 game. Players from the Reds, Mariners, Padres, Dodgers and many, many more teams never got in. The expectation is those scans will be in this next launch.
We also know a majority of these face scans were different than scans from prior years. They were more comprehensive due to SDS using a different face scan process and a different rendering process. Were the scans from 2020 done with the intention of higher fidelity and built for next-generation player models? We will see.
Regardless, there’s a lot of scans and data SDS has from spring training 2020 that should make it into the launch of MLB The Show 21.
It may seem simple, but leaning harder on RidinRosters for the 2021 launch would go a long way towards appeasing a community thirsty for an immersive simulation experience. Being able to start a franchise file or Road to the Show file on launch night because rosters are in fantastic shape is extremely important to some players.
Remember, for a lot of fans, minor league prospects are the hope and promise for the future for their baseball team. Having a roster file that accurately represents that reality is important in delivering on the “Full Minors” experience. And it should be even more important SDS gets to stamp their name on it and not rely on the community to tie up loose ends.
I dont think theres anything they can do about that... Seems random or something.

however, all in all, I rated their effort as somewhere between a C+ & a B-, and still light years ahead of previous default rosters. but plenty room for improvement, no doubt there. I don't know if they just ran out of time last year to do Single A before the game went gold, I never heard.

I disagree with you in the BOLDED part. Previous Default Rosters may have had more fictional players in them. But they were better balanced and more complete. At least before all of the fictional players had audio names entered and some equipment done. They also did not trigger 30 trades in the first month. Overall in my opinion this year was the worst Default Roster they ever put forward.
yeah, forgot they were pretty unbalanced, I had 9 catchers on my Orioles roster
My only gripe with SCEA rosters is that equipment edits are not saved across all rosters. I have to go in before my franchise and make franchise specific changes.
It works with SOTS, curious how possible it would be for equipment

And yes having equipment saved across all modes like SOTS would be a welcome feature

not to mention the default rosters lost year the options to send down were broken and only at 1 not 3/ There is a lot more they have to improve on before they improve the minors, last year was a start but I didn't see it much different to previous years.

I’m hoping that since the real baseball season will have been going on for nearly 3 weeks, that when the game releases they will be able to put those missing service time vets in the first roster update.
they have to have had a MLB at bat and pitched a innings.in 20021 don't forget and usually that first update takes over a month because it's when they have a break from the game. this is why it isn't worth getting MLB 21 day one this year their won't be a accurate roster well into july august. we will all be sitting on our Butts waiting for the vets to be added because we can't do it ourselves this year (unless you can import last years rosters which is extremely doubtful looking right now)
and here is another reason why I suspect importing rosters will NOT be in the game.. think about this players turn generic in franchise mode because of legal problems.. import a roster from last year and Tanaka would be on it. now they would have to LEAVE that feature in the game to turn generic.. think about it that feature is only there for carry over franchise mode which won't be there.
I keep finding reasons why importing last years rosters won't be there.

That’s my point. Real Baseball will be played for three weeks before the show comes out. Giving players time to get ABs and innings pitched. Then they might be ready to be put in on the day one roster update. There is always a day one roster update.
day 1 roster update?? you mean the one last year people expected would be up to download day 1 that took 1 month?? with the minors options issues. and still had Lux and Puk Urias missing for weeks? I remember that one I did My own thing day 1 and didn't wait expecting that like everyone else did.
Guess I’m just a wishful thinker
Also with FM team basically having to start over this year, could be June before we get a good Franchise ready roster.

See idk, ShowTyme on Twitter said it's gonna be a PIA this year because of a lot of missing MLB guys.
I also think that having "full minors" in the game last year probably made it easier to get facescans for more minor leaguers during spring training last year (obviously covid through a wrench into that tho). In previous years they would maybe get some of the AAA who were almost locks to debut that year so they could be added to the game the next year. With the announcement officially coming last year maybe they were able to convince more guys to get scans.
But again...I dont have any inside sources. Just guessing.
Also doesn't look like we're getting a video today unless I missed it

Guess we'll see but I just have a bad feeling on the rosters this year, hope I'm wrong... But I can confirm guys who opted out, are in the beta.
Yea no video again today... Not sure why they told us every Tuesday and Thursday we would get videos.
There's nothing to show, we aren't getting one.
