Everything You Need to Know About eFootball PES 2020

Believe it or not, we’re only a few weeks away from Konami releasing eFootball PES 2020. With the excitement of the new season in full swing, let’s take a look at what we know so far about Konami’s upcoming release.

Release Date

  • September 10, 2019 – Americas/Europe – PC/PS4/XB1
  • September 12, 2019 – Asia – PC/PS4/XB1

Name Change

“The full product name moving forward will be “eFootball: PES”. For this year we’ve announced eFootball PES 2020. We want to put a bigger focus on esports moving forward. In the past we’ve already shown [this] by having competitions such as PES League and eFootball Pro, the professional club competition. Moving forward, there will be bigger esports competitions coming up. We simply thought that by including it in the product naming, we’re making a statement and showing our community of fans, but also the wider audience, that esports will play a very big part moving forward.” – European Brand Manager Lennart Bobzien.

Gameplay Features Hyped By The PR Team

New Dribbling Technique

New in PES 2020, finesse dribble is an advanced technique that will allow users who are adept at anticipating the movements of their opponents to snake between defenders with exceptional agility. Developed in close consultation with world renowned midfielder Andrés Iniesta, finesse dribble empowers players with an affinity for technical flair to use superior technique and spatial awareness to outfox the opposition.

Upgraded Trapping Mechanics

Trapping a football is something of an art, and just as no two artists would paint a portrait in the same way, each player has his own unique approach to taking command of the ball.

The development team has gone to great lengths to realize this concept in PES 2020, with huge improvements coming to the way that trapping works in-game.Players will now exhibit enhanced intelligence when interacting with an approaching ball, choosing a trapping technique that is not only representative of their personal playstyle, but also one that suits each match situation.

A handful of new trapping skills will also be available. This includes no-touch control, which enables you run beside an incoming ball without making contact, and the trick trap, a skill that allows you to feint a trap in one direction before deftly veering off in the other to beat an opponent.

Context-Sensitive Kick Accuracy

For football purists, fewer things are more satisfying to see than a long ball that wings its way towards its target with uncanny accuracy, but like anything else in football, accuracy must be earned.

PES 2020 realizes this idea in-game by bringing an added level of realism to the pitch with enhanced context-sensitivity for kicking. This means that the accuracy of each shot and pass you unleash will change relative to your posture, your position on the pitch and how much pressure you’re under. This should make for a deeper and more authentic football experience. Now more than ever, you will be rewarded for timing, patience and match awareness.

More Realistic Defense

When the offense pushes forward into the final third, the penalty area can become something of a battlefield for defending players.

In PES 2020, significant improvements have been made to accurately re-create every tense moment of play that occurs around the box when defenders attempt to shut down a well-executed attack. These improvements include additional sliding tackle animations, more realistic animations when clearing the ball with your head, as well as the option to perform an intentional foul as a last-ditch effort to save an otherwise hopeless situation.

Improved Ball Physics

Significant enhancements to the physics engine will enable you to interact with the ball in several new ways, contributing to a deeper gameplay experience. First-touch interactions will now be rendered with far greater realism, allowing shrewd players to better anticipate the path of the ball. Technically minded football fans will also be able to take advantage of a finely tuned ball control system, which should allow them to manipulate the ball with various parts of their feet and control it with a greater level of dexterity.

Adaptive Player Interaction: Inspire

With the addition of an adaptive player interaction system realized through the new “Inspire” characteristic, fans will be able to see player personalities play out on the pitch with unprecedented realism. In PES 2020, not only will each player’s individual playstyle affect the way he interacts with the ball, but it will also have a significant impact on the behavior of the players around him.

For example, when a player renowned for his dribbling ability takes possession of the ball, his teammates will spread out to give him adequate space to make a penetrating run. Similarly, when a known playmaker is on the ball, his teammates will position more aggressively to take advantage of his prodigious passing ability.

This brings another layer of depth to squad composition, as you’ll have to think about how different playstyles complement one another to get the best possible performance out of your players.

New Skills And Abilities

Add a host of new skills and abilities to your repertoire in PES 2020, including the following:

Aggression – As the name suggests, players with this skill will bear down on a player with the ball with considerable aggression.

Tight Possession – Players with this skill will be able to use superior finesse and technique to out-maneuver the opposition in tight spaces

Through Ball – Players with this skill will receive an accuracy boost when playing through balls.

Long Shot – Players with this skill will receive an accuracy boost when shooting from range.

Game Mode Improvements Hyped By PR Team

Master League

Experience the ebb and flow of each season through dynamic interactions that reflect the result of every victory, loss and contract negotiation. Additionally, your imagination will no longer be tasked with filling in the blanks when navigating the player transfer system. Enhanced integration of real world data has now been incorporated to bridge the gap between game and reality, ensuring that each facet of the Master League transfer market is closely aligned with the real world of football.

Manager models have also seen marked improvement, and legendary managers from several countries are now available for selection.

Match Day Mode

The brand new Match Day mode does more than capture the spectacle of football’s biggest matches and most notorious rivalries. It distills the essence of football culture into a competitive format that lifts you out of the spectator stands and puts you onto the pitch. Align yourself with one of two different sides at the start of each event, wherein every perfectly placed pass and show-stopping goal you unleash contributes points toward your side’s victory.

Stand alongside PES newcomers and seasoned veterans alike as you work together to gradually build an advantage for your side ahead of the grand final of each event. In football, players score goals and goals win games, but no one player or single goal carries a team through an entire championship — you need something more.

Edit Mode

Create your original kit until the game release on September 10. You can also easily import edit data made by other users, and you will be able to edit them as much as you like after the game’s release.

MyClub

Make your very own original team, work to improve it then face off against other users around the world.

Other Career/League Modes

Future DLC

We’re only a few weeks out from what could be the best PES to date on this generation of consoles. After a strong showing at Gamescom and positive feelings emanating from the demo, footy fans could finally get game we all deserve.

  1. Only thing missing for me from this game is the following.
MLS League and Greek Super League. They have 4 Greek teams (the most) in the other European Teams and yet we get the Turkey and Thailand Leagues in the game. I'm a bit bias because I'm part Greek but it's time for these game companies to recognize these other leagues and put them in the game.
Will the MLS be possible with an edit or patch? In past editions that slot when edited/patched had a South America or Mexico vibe with a split season which ruined it for me. Although the flares in the crowd were cool. :D
Yeah the Greek league definitely needs some love. It’s too high profile of a league to go missing. Tbh, I didn’t even know the Thai league existed until last year when it was added late.
Yeah Royce! Seeing all those national sides in there might be a byproduct of getting the full Euro license. Should make qualifying within ML & BAL much better.

To be fair, it's not so much "recognizing" those leagues as acquiring their licenses, which can be difficult to negotiate and very expensive.
I mean, the Thai league probably cost Konami several hubcaps and a can of Spam.

and the Greek League would cost Konami more? lol.
If the Turskish League is in there, the Greek Super League should be in there too. I'm sure it wouldn't be that hard and expensive to negiotiate.
MLS as well. EA has it. Why not Konami?

Honestly, I'm not that familiar with the Greek League. But there are a couple of Greek teams whose brand value probably exceeds the entire Thai league as a whole.
(Speaking of, did anyone play a single Thai league match? I didn't.)

Hey, I wish they did do. I love MLS.
Wait wait wait, all these national teams are licensed, including the CONCACAF?
Either way, I can't wait for this release. Best demo I've ever played, and the best digital footy experience I've had to date. The bar has been raised, your move EA.

I don’t they’re all fully licensed (kits) but they’re in the game so a good OF should have them. That’s why it was so big for Konami to put the edit mode in the demo, even if you couldn’t do much with it.

I wish they provided space for completely custom leagues for Master League. Like where you could have tiers (top flight, championship, division 1,  etc...). Right now, I'm doing an MLS/USL promotion/demotion set up where MLS is where the EPL usually is and USL is where the English Championship is. I know that's not how they actually do  it, but I love the idea of promotion/relegation :)
KG, it isn't the kits I'm worried about, it's the faces.  I've yet to ever see any option file that had photo realistic faces for the US team.  The scans in both PES and FIFA are so good now, anything close to generic sticks out like a sore thumb.

For the CONCACAF teams it'll be the same as normal. US and Mexico with fake players and fake kits.
Europe will have all but 4 of their countries with full licensed players and uniforms.
Other continents are pretty much what we got last year. They break it down team by team on Konami's site.

    Ahhh I understand now.
Yeah we’ll get some from the kids who play in Europe but hopefully a good OF maker I’ll hook us up.

Haha, welcome to the beautiful game! I'm pretty sure either FIFA or PES was the gateway drug for a lot of us (it was for me).

I’m new to PES and noticed there are no gameplay sliders. Am I missing them?
If difficulty settings are the only changes that can be made, that simplifies things.

No sliders but you can change your settings for pass support, basic or advanced through ball and shooting, so effectively you can be ‘manual’ as opposed to assisted. The difficulty levels obviously speak for themselves. Like FIFA Career Mode, PES difficulty levels seem to ‘go up a notch’ in Master League.
