NHL 23 Presentation Details and Trailer Revealed

EA posted their NHL 23 presentation trailer earlier today along with a new deep dive blog filled with more details. A Stanley Cup celebration will be featured in NHL 23 where players can pick who receives the Cup next as sparklers and confetti are let off.

Upon passing the cup, players will be prompted with a pop-up asking: “Who do you want to pass it to next?” Based on 65 complex stories that are accurate to your team, commentary will justify your selection. If you choose to play an NHL player or create one of your own, you will see your player’s name etched into the Stanley Cup after your team photo is taken.

The gameday atmosphere has been upgraded with updated Hat Trick celebrations, revamped crowd reactions, on-ice projections, stadium improvements and more.

NHL 23 will also feature higher resolution ice so that it appears crystal clear on 4k televisions. And now, ice will be displaced throughout the game – accumulating on the sides of the goalie, boards and many parts of the rink in relation to areas of the ice that see the most skating. And finally, the ice has improved reflections from stadium lights and the jumbotron.

Characters in NHL 23 look more lifelike than ever before thanks to improvements such as oil on the face, skin shading, and general likeness enhancements. During a game, sweat and oil accumulate on the skin and reflect light across the skin, simulating mild exertion. In addition to this, NHL 23’s presentation with more accurate character appearance is enhanced with life-like reflections from lights.

NHL 23 releases on October 14 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The EA Play NHL 23 trial is scheduled to arrive on October 11.

The NHL 23 X-Factor Edition arrives three days earlier and will include the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 or Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S versions of the game. It also comes with the following items:

  • 4600 NHL Points
  • One HUT X-Factor Player Choice Pack
  • HUT X-Factor Power-Up Starter Pack
  • X-Factor Women’s HUT Choice Pack
  • Five World of Chel X-Factor Zone Ability Unlocks
  • Two Be A Pro X-Factor Slot Unlocks
  • XP Boost and Bonus Trait Points
  • Signed Sarah Nurse World of Chel Jersey

NHL 23 brings fans new levels of authenticity with gameplay improvements that include over 500 new last chance playmaking animations, living arenas and atmosphere, deep franchise-mode customization and new ways to play HUT, including the addition of IIHF Women’s National Teams in HUT, allowing the best women’s and men’s players in the world to compete on one lineup.

  1. You could personally skate with the Cup in NHL 2K9. The blue & white confetti for every team is an eye sore that should be fixed. The names on the cup cut scene is pretty cool but it still doesn't top the NHL 2004 Cup celebration as far as EA goes (it went through the entire roster in the team picture and showed stats for all of them)
Hat tricks being touted here is really embarrassing especially considering it always there every year except last year.
The on ice projections for pre-game intros is another thing 2K had over a decade ago.
Booing intensity increasing because of penalty discrepancy? I remember the storylines we had from NHL10-15 where players would get booed throught a playoff series if they injured a player.
The A/R leaderboard is a really nice touch.
They're really touting metal & ice shininess for the 2nd straight year. I can't believe it.
Overall: Some good, some things that a decade dead franchise had 12 years ago, & some embarrassing "why is this included?" portions.
No talk about commentating, was hoping for pre game city shots to add immersion to the game. Also nothing on goalie masks…Honestly not very impressed here.
There is some cool stuff. But tough to get too excited about things that were in hockey games 15 years ago. National Anthem is great to get back in, but nothing new. 2K games had pretty cool pregame arena presentation and as PhillyGuy mentioned, you could skate with the cup.
The hat-trick stuff looks off....the hats and Teddy Bears graphically look like they are from a few consoles ago.
The biggest issue for me is the way they remove things, gradually add them back in, & tout them as if they're a major addition every damn year.
All of the strides they made in the 360/PS3 gen was wiped away with NHL 15. It's like they started from the bottom & here we are 7 years later and NHL 14 still has things that these new games don't. I'm no longer paying $60-$70. It's not justifiable.
I will still never accept their excuse as to why custom music hasn't made it back in. Especially since MLB The Show added it back a few years ago

I’m glad I’m not the only one who found the Hats don’t look like they match up with what’s on the ice.
I'm actually finally happy they addressed presentation. Still would like to hear the starting lineup.. maybe someday. :)
Need some actualy game play to really decide if I'm going to pick it up this year.
Overall really happy with what I saw. Some stuff I don’t care about but I hope the face scans will be more widespread instead of just the stars. I really like the sounds of the improvements to equipment and ice authenticity. The anthems are a nice touch. Some of the AR stuff looks really nice. Those face scans look much better than what EA NHL has done in the past. I’m excited for the release to use the 10hr trial before making a decision to purchase.

This is a bit disappointing. No commentary discussion? No scorebug update?
Hm. Not sure what to say really. Hopefully the franchise improvements are deeper than being able to change the length of the season and divisions.
I don't care about graphical fuzz... It's nice, I will admit. But fluff for the sake of fluff while the gameplay remains (potentially) bad??? Ugh!!
And as many have pointed out, hyping up "NEW" features that were removed from previous iterations or REALLY old games from the competition?? How...
    ... Petty and Pedestrian.
The creation zone updates (more faces, more gear) and possibly new logos for teams? are welcome additions but them hammering a Stanley Cup presentation and 1998-era hats being tossed on the ice are pretty bad. The PBP commentary is the worst of any sports game out there by a mile and their AR presentation gimmick isn't really asked or needed. I'm concerned that they didn't show examples of the crowd beyond boo'ing for penalties, when that's....been in the game already? They said they amped up the crowd for big goals and big moments but if they didn't even show it here, it probably doesn't exist.
I don't really get why the devs feel the need to reinvent the wheel when copying TV broadcast packages has always been the most popular option.
That said, excited about seeing more gameplay information. I enjoyed 22 and will enjoy 23, but this dev team is pretty unimpressive compared to their peers.
What they showed is nice and all. I am all for graphics looking great. Does not matter to me if they had it in the past atleast its back. But this is all fluff to me. For me its about one thing and one thing only game play. With the CPU shoot the puck all over the ice, will they setup on the power play. If the game play is good they get my money. If not I save it. I am still pissed I spent $70 on madden this year lol
Some touches and improvements but disappointed there was nothing about commentary.
Staley Cup celebration and engraving is nice.....
I wonder if it updates the Cup throughout franchise mode with new winners added each year.

In all fairness, as primarily a franchise player who plays 20 minute periods on True Broadcast, I'm somewhat happy they put a little effort into presentation this year, even if most of what they're adding was in the old 2K games that I enjoyed so much!(grumble, grumble...) However, I will say that if the commentary isn't fixed it'll all be for naught. The overtop screaming about every single play is cringe inducing.
The big thing for me is seeing if they did any sort of recalibration with the a.i. gameplay. I won't go through the litany of items that need to be addressed that so many of you have already mentioned, but suffice to say the two I would love to see are, the a.i actually attempting a shot from anywhere other than within five feet of the crease. Also, please, please, please, allow the a.i. to call a timeout when appropriate!
I'm holding out hope that the upcoming gameplay preview will give me further cause to be optimistic.
Two things I wish would happen with the game, license the authentic coaches and bring back arena music customization... I can get the sliders where I want them usually and have fun playing the game, but I play for some weird coach that no one knows and the arena music is repetitive and stale... I wish the coaches would have ratings and tendencies as well, meaning if you play for a coach such as Torts, you get rewarded for great defensive play and the game goes sideways if you think you are going to run and gun under Torts. All coaches have specific tendencies, I don't see this being a huge undertaking to create, especially just adding them on the bench instead of Igor Stomsky or whoever... I don't play EASHL or CHEL, throw us franchise players a bone EA... c'mon!!!
I just want much-needed franchise updates. Waivers to work correctly. A legit easy way to get to waivers to a) see who's on there and b)if or who has been claimed or has a claim on them. Even though it's on and I try and watch the waiver declarations screen, I never see option to claim waiver popup. And once a player is claimed they should have to stay on the NHL roster or they pass through waivers again. Not like EA does it where it puts them on the AHL roster.
Nothing is more important than game play but since this thread is about presentation I just have one thing to say. Let's say everything they just showed us translates surprisingly perfect to the immersion of the game....how badly will those old, many generically boring, goalie masks stand out this year? I've already seen several in the trailer videos.

My words too. They give us metal Player helmets, gloves ..... From my side of view a Goalie mask creator should have higher priority. Maybe this Team didn't realize that every Goalie has his individual painted mask, lol

They know. They just don't care. Goalies are and have always been (Except during Litman's run as Head of the team) the least important part of the game to them.
Hockey goaltending is the least understood aspect of this sport, in real life and in videogame form. That's why out of all the hockey videogames ever released, only NHL 2K8 ever gave them justice.
