NHL 22 Closed Technical Test Registration Open Now - Testing Begins Later This Month

EA Sports is looking for their most engaged and important players in the community to join the NHL 22 Closed Technical Test. Registration is open now for players looking to get their first in-game experience with the game online, as EA looks to stress test the servers.

There are limited spots for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X, so make sure to register here as soon as you can. If you happen to be selected, you will receive an email containing a code later this month, when the NHL 22 closed technical test is scheduled to begin.

The closed technical test is a work-in-progress and EA asks that you submit feedback and bugs in the private feedback forum that will accompany your email with access code.

As with all closed technical tests, you are not allowed to share or capture any videos or screenshots. Streaming is also prohibited and may result in your access to be revoked.

  1. Awesome, I was in on the M22 beta and this said "Success", in the coming weeks you will be emailed an invitation code, so I hope that means I'll get access to the beta.
My expectations are extremely low for NHL22. Considering it is August and they have yet to even show a trailer or even a Screen Shot just screams nothing has changed in visuals and animations. I signed up just to verify why I will not be buying NHL22 .

Oh goody! I was getting tired of playing good games like F1 2021. This'll be a gas...

At least you have an open mind, you'll probably love it. :D
I am just a little relieved that at the very least it’s coming out hoping as an offline player to be somewhat pleasantly surprised as to what they are going to offer but always cautiously optimistic
when u guys do this, can you please check if skating sounds work, check if big checks break the game still, also check if sounds skip in and out on sorten 4k HDTVs.
for checking, I have observed big checks actually break player causing him to skate along the sideboards broken, also check if shots 100 glitches through the scoreboard downwards.
I signed up too. Expectations aren’t high but my bro and I still have a good time each week playing against each other. I’ll play the 10 hrs with EA Play and decide later if it’s worth a buy.

Sarcasm on top of sarcasm? Gotta at least give props. :D
But seriously for me to love it, it needs to be made by an entirely different team and it's the SAME team as last year. For me to even like it they need to at the very least change the settings and you know they aren't doing that much.
Nah, I'm giving it a shot, as I do every year. Because you can't critique something you don't know. As always I'll be mostly trying out the goalie position cuz that's the position I know.
Don't expect much to change there... :(
The fact that next-gen systems have their own selection has me encouraged that PS5/XSX will get newer gameplay updates. I would expect last-gen to be basically the same.
But really hopeful PS5 has a jump in both graphics and overall feel of gameplay. Madden next-gen looked nicer, but the real difference was how different players felt in their weight and movement.

All the NHL team had to do to make their player movement feel realistic was adjust the sliders they already give us in the game and they just refused to do it. RPM looks amazing when you turn acceleration down to 0, I'm not kidding. It's an amazing movement engine that feels real and offers a very realistic sense of acceleration and agility that pro hockey players have, but their current tuners made the game move like NHL 09 again where players are floating because the skating animations can't keep up with the ridiculous pivots and directional changes.
I love the skating and checking in this game, it literally just needs proper tuning. There's nothing console-wise or ignite engine-wise holding RPM back from looking and feeling incredible. I am the first to admit it and I was the biggest TPS critic around who also didn't want NHL 09 skating either.

I’m curious to try the game with acceleration at zero. Based on your post, I’m assuming it’s not the only slider you alter. Care to share your sliders? I’d like to give them a go.

I'll grab them tonight. Been using these for a few weeks now and they have played really well. I use custom rosters with goalies designed specifically to my set so I can't promise the goaltending will be the same, but the checking and skating and overall pace of the game should be pretty universally applicable to vanilla teams/rosters.
I tried playing with the sliders, and yes Acceleration on 0 does make the gameplay feel better. But you just can't change the AI and you can't change the goaltending. No matter what you set the sliders to it's just the same ol' EA Hockey...
The goaltending and gameplay engine has to be completely redone from ground up in order for me to buy this game.
Maybe we finally see boxscores for all franchise games. finally??
Hopefully we can edit players names? Finally.
Alot has to change for me to buy this game again.

Yeah the AI is pretty meh. They're just not dynamic and they don't keep their momentum! You see real life players keep their momentum all of the time as it's easier to make adjustments with a bit of momentum than none. You watch their AI and they struggle when acceleration is lower because they aren't programmed to correctly keep their momentum. They're programmed with 50 acceleration in mind so they can afford to stand still for long periods of time then recover with ease which is something that would get you burned IRL.
The defensemen in the offensive zone will stand still with zero momentum right until the puck carrier is about even with them and then they'll start moving because the default sliders that only allow puck carriers to go 50% of the speed as non-puck carriers + have acceleration at 50/100 + have attribute effects at 5/10 allow the AI to do this and recover. I have to have a pretty good "house ruleset" when it comes to exposing the AI down the wing and on rushes because the D just simply don't respect the carrier's speed early enough which means their gap control is off before it really even starts lol.
Then goalies, that's just a whole different conversation. Reactionary saves on rocket tips from 1-5 feet out, yet get beat from wrist shots top glove from the tops of the circle. Can change directions without planting their feet. Can gobble up one-timers on plays where they move through heavy screens and the shot is not placed center mass (should be some sort of rebound due to the fact that a blocking save should be used here). They still sprint out of the net on saucer passes that are caught right in-front of them which allows for easy empty net goals. They get beat on short-side shots with an off-wing shooter every single time as if goalies aren't taught to wait shooters out and force far-side in these situations.
The CaT suite + my imagination + the way I play is able to get some enjoyment out of this product. I don't find any other hockey games getting as close to the "complete product" if you will as NHL 21, but these two areas are very lacking and I believe they're very big sore spots on the series. I wish I could grab 2k goalies and paste them in here because with my sliders + house rules, I think it would be a very solid experience.

I just played the NHL 94 Rewind and it had boxscores. How sad is that? lol
I started to sign up, then saw they only want people to play online in the beta. Since I am a strictly offline franchise guy, this isn't for me. And, sadly, this seems to indicate their priorities.

+ Minimum 100 new Player likenesses ( many old existing have retired ), new generic face options to create Players or face scans from a pic. Also EA need to open existing generic Player option to recreate them. Many are looking terrible and far from real. Goalie mask creation. Player (not Gamer) History .... means that I see the Trade History of the Players including for what or whom they were traded and also Stanley Cup rings and Awards. More and correct ( now they show many wrong statistics ) Infos during the Game in Popup windows. Last 5 Game statistic to see if a Player is on a hot or cold streak.

Really ? Only for online gaming ? Than it’s nothing for me too. I need only Franchise offline, other Game modes never play. Thx for your information.

I just got a beta key for FIFA 22 so NHL shouldn't be too far behind.

Did Fifa have the same system signup as madden and nhl or different ?

There was no signup for FIFA, at least I never got anything like I did for M22 and NHL22.
I actually had more fun with 21 than any other game in the series because the neutral zone and D pressure was fixed a bit. It was forcing me to dump the puck in and really have fun with the game. However, then I found a game breaking bug where you can just slip down the side of the boards and the CPU D man can be right on top of you but they don't poke check or even attempt to do anything to get the puck. They just do this light body check that they miss. It's every single time and that's when I stopped playing. I don't remember the gameplay being like that when the game initially released but as time went on with patches and tuners I just felt like the game changed (shocker). That or I just didn't see the issue at the beginning.
I bet I put in close to 100 hours all offline when this game came out though. I completed probably 60 games in the first season with a Wild GM mode and re-built them essentially. The 2nd season I got about 10 games in. It was a ton of fun and then I found the issues. This game just always has a game breaking bug for me. I refuse to have house rules in order to play an NHL game (ie. no going down the side boards to avoid what I said above). It's one thing to have house rules for trades and things like that. If I have to do something game play wise because I can do the same damn thing over and over I just stop playing.

Yeah I just use "house rules" to mitigate that. I also set the CPU to "high pressure" which makes them a little more aggressive in that scenario. 21 is the most complete hockey game I've ever played, but it took a massive amount of tLC from rosters, sliders, and strategy adjustments to get there.

I just hope they fix the one-timer issue.
It is absurd that it is a guaranteed goal if you can pass.

what's also absurd is how bad the goalies are at some things (one-timers) but can flash the glove on with a reactionary limb save from a shot 10 feet away where they had to move and the shot came through a screen. The goalies are just so bad, NHL Hitz Pro puts it to shame. And it's not even that they're "bad" at stopping every scenario, it's that what gets rewarded and what doesn't with even something as simple as an unclean save/rebound-scramble opportunity is absurd. Or if you're in a scramble scenario and the goalie is down, they can someone float across the ice in their butterfly to stop the backdoor one-timer. How can games from the 00'-09' decade force goalies to plat their feet and respect momentum and a game from 2020 can't?

Yup goalies in NHL 21 can save anything and for me the only way to score was one-timers especially on difficulties above PRO
I hope I can adjust the difficulty so I can play on Superstar and really see how smart the AI is, as well as test to see if the OP CPU goalie is gone…

IIRC, the beta is going to be online only (like past years). So VS, Ones, Threes and WoC. So you won't be able to play with the settings much. Also if you thought the Goalies were OP and saved everything, Ouch...

It sounds like it's coming Monday.

According to EA, the closed BETA was coming "end of August". Not many days left before it's September. Also starting their BETA on Monday would be ill advised (most people work or go back to school).
My guess is that they do the big trailer reveal later today and start sending codes shortly after (or tomorrow) so everyone will have the entire weekend to try the game.

I mean it is possible. It would be the dumbest idea ever, but it is EA we are talking about. Why not have a BETA and release it when no one can play it, right?
But the smart money is on them releasing it tonight and we have the weekend to try it out when most people are not working or in school. Also the LG playoffs will be on hold until Monday. So yeah.
Tonight seems like a safe bet still...

Because we need to learn to play CHEL at this point and time??? Ugh... If they do that, it'd be the most EA thing they can do. "Hey let's show everyone how to play and then release a BETA during the time when no one can play it. We're so smart. Ok I have to go home now. I have to put gas in my dog and then take my car for a walk."

So the entire test is catered towards CHEL. No online VS other than CHEL?
Keep catering towards the tiny percentage that plays CHEL. Madden might not be in a great state but at least they finally acknowledged that all of these online game modes makeup such a tiny percentage that catering solely to them makes no more sense.
I signed up for the beta when registration was available, it said I should get a code when it is available, but if it’s for world of chel (which I have never played ever). Why should I even bother with it?
I was hoping for at least a vs mode, I never play online, I am strictly offline franchise.
I’ll play online vs but not chel

Then save yourself the time: it's WoC specific. They even said when you signed up that they were looking for ONLINE players. They also said that GM Connected was not a feature they worked on this time, but Be a Pro would get some tweaks.
I personally would've loved an overhaul for franchise/offline modes but that would mean a massive overhaul of the AI and you know that's not gonna happen.
They better have made WoC something special or I'm gonna be real disappointed.

So this isn’t online head to head with regular teams but we have to create a player and play in that pond hockey rink ??

This dev team is comical. Nobody buys this game, in mass anyway.. Yet they have a closed beta. LOL. This beta should be open to anyone that can turn on a system. End of story!

100% lol. Niche sports, niche series, you're finally catching up graphically with Frostbite and you add any pre-release hype behind a closed beta? Just doesn't make any sense.

That's not even the most comical part! They said the game is not cross-platform right? And also the last gen version would be separate from the new gen version, right? So.... Laugh it up.

World of Chel or WoC encompasses more than just one game mode. Ones Eliminator, Threes Eliminator, 3v3, 6v6 (pond), 3v3, 6v6 (Clubs). I suppose those modes will be the ones we're trying out.

Very true. I just wish they'd cut down on some of the physics-defying plays you can execute in that mode. They have the sliders to do so, they just choose not too. For me, it's very boring and shallow watching every team play the same exact way looking the same goals. Like, there's no depth to the 1v1s like both FIFA and PES are trying to do in their respective games. NHL is boring, mundane, hard collapse, LB in-front of your human goalie who is seemingly completely screened or never screened, no in-between, and then try to cover the jitterbug forwards who can sprint, turn, whirl, curl to their hearts desire and just hold RS up and launch a perfectly placed one-timer.
Seriously, it's so boring. No creativity, none of the little battles or small self-chips to make a play, buy space, no bumper passes to create a little room because it's not needed. Just RS curl and spin and wait for your forced pass and one-timer to "open" up. Hockey is just such a deep sport with so many impressive little plays and passes to buy time and space and that's just completely discouraged online because it's easier and more effective to run set plays like basketball where you're exploiting bad game mechanics/balancing than you are exploiting a bad read/position by the other team.
Idk how any watches or palys "competitive" EA NHL lol. It's just so shallow.
Hard to disagree there. EA needs to do a better job focusing on legit hockey strategy like dumping to the zone and working the boards, cycling the puck around.
My team plays as sim style as possible. But it doesn’t reward that style of play
