NBA 2K22 The W Features New Player Progression, Off-Day Experience, Updates For The W Online & More

2K has revealed new features and updates coming to The W in NBA 2K22 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles. The WNBA mode will introduce an all-new badge progression experience, three playable off-day experiences, and continue to provide ways to connect with friends online.

  • New Player Progression – With a new badge progression feature, players will be able to earn badges to improve their games as they embark on the journey to become WNBA legends. Competing on the court or grinding it out in practice, players will be able to equip and upgrade badges to customize their MyPLAYER builds based on their unique specialties.
  • Off-Day Experience – The W introduces three new playable activities to make off-days count. Scrimmages, team practices, and contact workouts provide the opportunity for players to hone their craft as they develop throughout the season. In a franchise first, historic and current WNBA stars can be challenged in contact workouts to acquire new skills on one’s own path to greatness
  • The W Online – Returning to NBA 2K22 for PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S consoles, The W Online brings new ways to connect with the 2K community. Players will be able to link up with friends before the matchmaking process to take to the court as a team. By playing games in The W Online, players will be able to earn Season XP as they level up to earn new prizes and awards..

Check out the latest Courtside Report sent to us from 2K, as we look forward to NBA 2K22 gameplay details next week.

Are you ready? The W is waiting for you.

The WNBA is growing and is led by a new class of stars, and it’s your turn to join them. Start your career in The W and experience what it’s like to walk among legends. Become the player you were born to be and come as close as it gets to playing in the WNBA.

Building off the success of The W in NBA 2K21, we’re giving you an even more authentic WNBA experience in NBA 2K22. Your player’s journey to WNBA stardom is going to require calculated decisions that positively or negatively impact how you progress during your career. These decisions will influence how your career pans out, meaning there will be greater rewards or bigger consequences. We’re giving you more opportunities to grow your game by making connections with some of the WNBA’s finest players, who will help you boost various abilities. Make contacts, work out with legends, and level your way up in more ways to play than ever before in NBA 2K22.

New Player Progression

Drum roll, please. NBA 2K22 is proud to announce an all-new Badge progression to The W. Along the way, you’ll earn badges, which improve areas of your player’s game. In NBA 2K22, you can customize your player’s badges freely, opening the door to endless possibilities and unique builds based on your specialties.

When creating your MyPLAYER, you’ll see the available badges next to your attributes in the four categories of Finishing, Shooting, Playmaking, and Defense. These will dictate how your player can improve and become more well-rounded. By playing games, you’ll fill the meter in each category, and you’ll earn badge points, which can be used to equip and upgrade badges. Managing and editing your badges is easy by saving custom badge loadouts specific to your MyPLAYER. By doing so, you can fine-tune your experience and get strategic when facing off in various experiences in The W.

Off-Day Experience

Honing your craft takes dedication. We get it, but everyone deserves an off-day too. This year we added three new playable activities to the off-day experience for you to participate in. We want you to be more thoughtful and balanced in your workout regimen, meaning the choices you make will play a role in how you progress, gain popularity, and build your wallet. The three new playable modes will grant you and your MyPLAYER the closest thing to becoming a WNBA pro. The W delivers more opportunities to improve your game and the most authentic experience to date.

Scrimmages will be a great way for you to practice with teammates in a short game, lasting only one quarter. If you want to be a team player, this is how you earn team chemistry with your squad, leading to more trust on the court.

In addition to scrimmages, join team practices and work on specific skills during drills to earn badges and upgrade them. Filling out the stat sheet in a big game is a special feeling, but to take center stage you need to practice. It’s never a bad idea to get in the coach’s ear either, and it might just get you a little extra, like two additional team drills. Coaches can be helpful, but so can current and former WNBA players.

NBA 2K22 will feature contact workouts, an exciting way of learning new skills in The W. Progressing through the Season will help you form connections with some of the WNBA’s brightest stars, such as Candace Parker, A’ja Wilson, and Nneka Ogwumike. You’ll be able to challenge them to 1-on-1, 2-on-2, or even 3-on-3 games of 21. Best of all, you’ll be able to join forces with players after you make contact with them. You can choose to play alongside a player or go toe-to-toe against them in future workouts. Each contact specializes in different skills and will help you improve one of your badge categories. By beating them, you’ll boost your badge in that category significantly. If you can’t defeat your contact the first time around, it’s all good. You can always run it back as many times as you like. We want to get you started by giving you three WNBA contacts the moment you step into The W —it’s good to have connections.

You’ve got the skills to become a WNBA legend, but you need guidance on your path to greatness. NBA 2K22 allows you to turn idols into mentors and legends into advisors. Learn from your WNBA heroes and become the face of the next generation in The W.

The W Online

Returning to NBA 2K22, The W Online is ready to get underway, but with a couple of added elements. Now you’ll be able to link with your friends before the matchmaking process. The W Online will allow you to play online with your friends and take the court as a team. Whether you’re competing with your friends or solo, you’ll earn Season XP by playing games. Leveling up will earn you new prizes and rewards, such as two new historic contacts from the Houston Comets and New York Liberty who will be playable during contact workouts! At the start of every season, we’ll refresh the historic contacts so you can keep growing your network.

The W’s all-new off day experiences, badge progression, and contact workouts are all about making your dreams a reality with NBA 2K22. Not only can you envision yourself as a WNBA player, you can actually become a WNBA Legend. We can’t wait for you to experience all it has to offer, including new, exclusive clothing, signature animations, and other awesome rewards.

Why are they shoving WNBA down so hard on everyone?**

Don't like it, don't play it. There are plenty of other modes you can play. They have other gamers they need to cater to besides us.
Would be nice if they allowed separate game file installs so we don't have to install the modes we don't play, like some other games do. But I imagine with everything in NBA being so connected, that wouldn't be possible.

You are what is wrong with the world.
NBA 2k posted a blog, THAT YOU DO NOT HAVE TO READ, regarding The W features and you feel this is "shoved down your throat" or is it that you just dont want anyone talking about the WNBA. It seems like the latter.

Saying "you are wrong with the world" might not be the best response to having an open dialogue. I'd say it's a fair question in regards to 2k putting such an emphasis on the WNBA inside of a video game marketed as being an NBA game. In line with the question, I would genuinely be curious to see how many users play the WNBA mode.
With a limited amount of resources (both time and money) available towards the improvement of a game released annually, I think the question merits an answer.
Seems like they're brining a good chunk of pre-Neighborhood MyCareer ideas into the W.
Figure most of it won't work it's way into this year's MyCareer, but I'm crossing my fingers. I kind of miss those optional workouts and the team facility and the impromptu games/workout sessions at your MyCourt with contacts you got in the game.
At the very least, seems like we're getting the ability to save badge loadouts?
Also looks like Hyperdrive, Quick Chain, Triple Threat Juke (as someone who used triple threat/jabs a lot more this year, I'm intrigued), and Glue Hands are new playmaking badges.

The WNBA is a part of the NBA; it's like the Gleague in a way. It's all under the NBA umbrella. It's why a solo WNBA game makes no sense. On the gaming front, 2K has the NBA fan market on lock. We're not not going to buy the game and they know it. In addition to marketing the WNBA, which the NBA wants, they could also squeeze out some new sales to a new demographic. There's growth potential there. It's like that 2K league thing. I couldn't care any less about it but 2K or the NBA sees something there. I'll probably dabble with the WNBA before not touching it again. If nothing else it's a value add.

Obviously catering to the huge WNBA market. Very smart move by 2K to dedicate resources to that over other modes that need more attention...

White knight feminists incoming in 3...2..1...

There is nothing "white knight feminists" about understanding why 2K has included the WNBA into the series and why they are promoting the changes to the mode, which they do for pretty much every mode in the game. WNBA can open a new fanbase and potential customers to the series and it does 2K no good if they don't continue add and improve to the mode.
I don't see how having a blog about it is "shoving it down our throats." The first blog was about "Seasons." Was that also being shoved down our throats? We are getting blogs for My Career, My NBA, The City, and My Team. So I guess all those modes are also being shoved down our throats because 2K is dedicating time to talk about how those modes have been changed and improved.
I don't understand why some people seem to have issues when modes they don't care about get attention. I'm mostly an offline player but I understand there are other modes in the game that other players are interested in. I simply focus on the stuff I care about an ignore everything else. It's that easy.

I feel 2k did a solid job with the WNBA on court experience, it's a nice change of pace when I play it in MyWNBA compared to when I play MyNBA. I actually hope they add more of the myNBA options and features to MYWNBA this year.

Just let us earn a lot of VC in the mode and I see no problem. That would give people a lot more incentive to play it. I played it last year and got bored but If I could earn say 1000 VC a game maybe more I'd play it a lot more often.
I don’t follow the WNBA at all, but I’m really looking forward to giving it some run in 2k22. If you think about it, being unfamiliar with the personalities in the WNBA means that in 2k it’s like having an extremely polished fictional league, complete with cyberfaces, etc., and fictional rosters can be fun because you’re not as hampered by realism concerns (“LeBron would never sign in NoLA wtf?!?!”).
Didn’t play WNBA in 2k21 because it wasn’t as feature-rich as I wanted (understandable; it’s new), but I’m looking forward to seeing what’s new in WNBA franchise mode in particular. Hopefully it’s identical to the men’s league in functionality.

Thumbs up. I’ll add that video games can be a great ‘gateway drug’ to sports leagues. If improvements to the WNBA in 2k lead to more people playing it, they’ll gain familiarity with the league and have a better chance of tuning in to the actual sport and becoming fans. I’m not a WNBA fan but I’m hoping that 2k will make me one.

You’d think at this point they’d market themselves as a separate product. It’s been 20 years and they still need the NBA to subsidize them.
It’s been a failed business venture for 2 decades now, the nba needs to stop catering to the woke crowd that doesn’t support their league.

Parents are "amazing" and are better, smarter, and more mature than everyone else who doesn't have kids because they got someone pregnant or got pregnant, and did what they're supposed to afterwards. Got it. Here's your trophy. That type of entitled arrogance is an epidemic.

Not so much the blog post, more so about the existence and attention the mode itself gets when there's 1000s of other things in the game they should be paying people to create. Every developer and designer that works on WNBA is one less they could be paying to work on the modes that actually matter. Probably the stupidest ROI for 2K I've ever seen. No one plays WNBA in 2K22 or watches the WNBA, so it's basically just a public service feel good story or the WNBA's last ditch attempt to create interest in their failed version of the sport.
How bout this scenario -- whatever mode you play the most gets ignored for 5 years while WNBA gets 100x the innovation and resources. In that scenario, with your logic, no one should care. You may say "2K has enough resources" but there's literally never enough for any company. More is always better. There's a ton of things they could put that money towards -- better servers, better innovation like VR, etc etc

Until they spice it up it's going nowhere on basketball talent alone. It basically needs to become the XFL but for basketball for people to watch lol. I'm glad it exists so that both sexes have a professional sport to strive for, but as a product that generates fans and revenue, it's been bad for awhile.

    You guys are weird

Seriously who says "weird" that isn't 8 years old lmaooo
But it's a good word for people who have no argument to use.
    I quit 2k21 around in January/Febuary when I knew for a fact I wasn't gonna get a PS5 or Xbox Series X.
Was the WNBA ever playable online in 21 next gen? Is it playable online in 22? If not, then what's the point of any of this if we can't use the real players online?
It's not a separate product, though. It's all the NBA. The league is a business so they must see some value in the WNBA. Who cares if the NBA subsidies it? The NBA is worth billions why do I care how they spend their money.
The Euroleague has some of the best players in the world and pays millions. It's fine. 2K had the Euroleague for a few years and dropped them. As sloppy as they were I actually enjoyed playing with the different players and I started following the league. I'd have never done that if not for 2K. I'm guessing the vast majority of 2K players didnt care or touch the teams. That's fine, too. It didnt cost them a thing. The WNBA isnt any different.
I have learned though that when I see stuff like "shoved down our throats", "feminist" and "woke" the type I'm dealing with so I roll my eyes and ignore em. Not worth the time.

Well said. From a business perspective it seems like a weird decision to dedicate so many resources towards the WNBA side of the game. The WNBA is obviously not a very successful league. It doesn't typically bring in good crowds, bring in many eyeballs on TV, etc. It's fair to ask why 2k is choosing to prioritize it.
Maybe they have data that shows the WNBA gameplay is popular enough to dedicate these resources to it. Maybe they aren't doing it for primarily financial reasons, but it is more of a "want to" type of deal.
Given the demand of each product, the NBA and the WNBA, compared to one another and compared to other sports, there is no comparison. The WNBA is not popular at all, but maybe this is an effort to change that.

I understand a lot of this board skews (significantly)older, but nothing about this forum is a welcoming environment for anybody who isn't white or a man and that's just in my experiences lurking the madden and 2k boards for years. I'm not surprised, just making observations.

I'm glad to see 2K continue to add more depth to the WNBA mode. My wife enjoys playing it and the last thing 2K doesn't need is for the WNBA to remain stagnant the same way EA did when they had it their last two installments.

Come hard at the people who don't follow the TOS. We have a good bar of discussion at OS and we should never aspire to become 4chan.
Back on topic, I'm interested. I enjoy playing as the WNBA teams as a nice change of pace and it's good that 2K isn't treating them as an afterthought. It can definitely be a great tool to gain more fans through osmosis as well as giving a bone to WNBA fans who also play 2K.
Glad they added the ability to join up and play with friends in The W. I would have played this mode more last year, just as a fun change of pace, but not being able to team up with friends soured a lot of my interest.
If All-Star Team Up is added back in this year (please, oh please, let it be back), my friends and I will have a lot more options for playing together in 22.
It's really sad reading some of these comments, Like yes 2k is putting a fare amount of resources into this mode lol if any gaming company can do it its 2k they probably have massive team with millions  in the budget thanks from a large part being  VC. I actual tried the MYWNBA mode and it was fun and different ,like many ppl have said already you don't have to play it stick to what you like but when you get bored of that mode try something else . You're paying full price for a game and only play 1 or 2 modes lol come one
People really trying to claim WNBA is “taking away resources.” So what was happening all those years y’all complained about 2K and there was no WNBA to “take resources” lmao.
WNBA MyCareer should be like 360/PS3 era MyCareer with press conferences. If they did that I'd play it more.
Seriously man. I've been missing the old version of MyCareer 2k11-2k13. I've actually stopped playing 2K21 on my PS5 and went back to my 360 to play the old Myplayer/MyCareer in 2K11-2K14. I'd play the WNBA a lot more often if it was identical to that.

To be honest the WNBA side of things is what I was waiting on 2K to address. They definitely have the potential to make basketball gamers gain interest in the league if they go all out. I want to be able to play with a female character at the park and rec. I also want a H2H mode with a leaderboard. Make this happen!!

They also have all the park clothes in the W they're all there and free. Maybe they're afraid that the community wouldn't respond well to it?
The old Street hoops game from 2002 let you create a female player and play against men.
While I am not a fan of MyCareer or the W, I do love 2k is putting a lot of energy into the WNBA which I played more than MyLeague because MyLeague was trash because they nerfed the G-League and make it where it couldn't be edited or customized.
