Patrick Mahomes has maintained a close relationship with his former rival, Tom Brady.
Mahomes, in an interview with Up & Adams, spoke about how Brady’s advice has helped him deal with a humiliating Super Bowl defeat earlier this year.
Despite finishing as QB11 in 2024, Mahomes has the sixth-highest ADP among quarterbacks heading into the 2025 campaign. His fantasy value has decreased since collecting the most fantasy points during the 2022 regular season, which has coincided with the Kansas City Chiefs’ offense sliding from elite to mediocre.
Brady’s Advice To Mahomes
Mahomes and Brady have been in frequent contact throughout the offseason, with Brady offering the Chiefs superstar plenty of advice. Brady emphasizes the need to be authentic and the importance of working hard.
Mahomes is committed to following the same blueprint for long-term success. He’s willing to take anything Brady says on board, and seems to be more motivated by Brady’s mentorship.
Explaining Brady’s advice, Mahomes said, “But he always talks about being yourself. He thinks that — which I truly believe, too — is that guys can spot when you’re not authentic, and you’re not putting in the work. That’s something that he did every single day. That’s why guys respected him so much.
“And that’s all I’m going to do for the rest of my career, and I feel like I’ve done so far, is I’m always myself — no matter if you like me or don’t like me, you know I’m giving everything I can to win football games.”
What To Expect From Mahomes
Despite reaching the Super Bowl again, the 2024 NFL regular season was the worst of Mahomes’ career. He had 26 passing touchdowns in 16 games (fewer than any other full season) and posted only 245.5 passing yards per game. Since his dominant 2022 campaign, Mahomes has recorded mediocre fantasy numbers, despite registering seven game-winning drives last season.
Six quarterbacks had more total passing yards than Mahomes in 2024. Eight had more passing yards per game. Just seven quarterbacks were hurried more times than Mahomes, and he was down in 25th in pocket time.
It won’t get much easier in 2025 unless free-agent signing Jaylon Moore and first-round pick Josh Simmons make an immediate impact on the left side of the offensive line.
Rashee Rice, Xavier Worthy, and Hollywood Brown form an intriguing receiving trio. If Mahomes has even league-average pass protection, he should have a bounce-back year from a fantasy perspective. Channelling the ferocious competitiveness of Brady won’t do Mahomes any harm, either.
The Chiefs, Andy Reid, and Mahomes are out for revenge in 2025. This is far from a perfect roster, but Mahomes is capable of posting historic numbers with no more than a solid supporting cast. Don’t be surprised if he’s once again one of the five most valuable fantasy quarterbacks in the league.
