The team has also added over 100 new generic heads which will be available in create-a-player.

Rosters

For rosters, some adjustments were made to make Franchise mode more dynamic and to better reflect aging superstars and promising young players. We started with removing the ‘Star+’ dev-trait on many older veterans who have met or surpassed their full potential through their careers.

You can expect some tweaks to the OVR formula as well. We’ve modified the outside linebacker group to get them more closely aligned to middle linebackers, which will improve ratings crossovers when changing a player’s position from one to the other to support specific defensive schemes and playbooks. This change will prevent significant OVR shifts when changing positions and keeps players within the same range across the LB positions.  Along with this, Ball Carrier Vision has been added to the Scrambling QB archetype to better characterize a very important skill for this type of player.

Ratings

During the Madden NFL 21 season, we started using the average of the top five speeds recorded by each player, via Next Gen Stats, to get a better evaluation for our Speed rating. Using real-life data from the NFL, and accounting for player performance on a weekly and yearly basis, we will deliver a more accurate representation of player speed on the Madden gridiron.

In addition to the speed data, we find it really important to take into account recorded 40-yard-dash times and watch game film to see how it translates to game-speed. To summarize, we’re matching up the Next Gen Stats data and combining numbers with actual game footage to improve our creation process of Speed and Acceleration ratings for Madden NFL 22.

  1. "With those limitations in-mind, we made a significant effort to upgrade our generic head library. We’ve added over 100 new generic heads that will be available options for create-a-player."
This is my biggest take away, everything else is nice don't get me wrong but for years we have had the same generic faces in CFM. Creating the draft classes on Madden 20 and just after a while, everyone has the same face. Glad they finally addressed this, hopefully going forward they can separate hair, different hair styles/length, facial hair, etc for real customization of a player.
The adjustment to the Dev Trait for older vets will be a subtle but nice improvement in helping the CPU construct it's roster. This will allow younger players to stay on the roster, play more, and start sooner instead of being behind a vet who is marginally better than them.
Finally we'll see more generic faces in franchise... Hopefully they fixed the bug where heads didn't match player portraits. Did anyone check this out in the beta?
Having more heads will also go along way for those players without scans to maybe get something that more closely resembles their real life counterparts.
Hopefully the next big likeness thing Madden focuses on is Tattoos. Even generic ones would be a good option. Just something to make players stand out a bit more.

No Trey Lance = no buy. If you can't scan them, get a real artist to make them in blender. It's not impossible. It's not even that difficult.

I’m going to guess you’ve never modeled anything (other than a box) in your life with that last line you spit out. Crazy you or anyone would ever make such an erroneous statement.
Anyways, this was my favorite part of the article…
As you have seen throughout the game over the last two years, NFL Next Gen Stats is a big part of where we’re taking our game in terms of player performance and we’re continuing to find more ways to integrate this data into ratings processes in the future.

With next gen stats becoming the focal point, we shouldn’t see some things like the new movement, route running, speed, etc. going anywhere anytime soon.
At least in terms of movement, the comp goal of unrealistic User agency may have finally been defeated.
It's so interesting how sports video games, really bring out the over the top homerism and OCD traits in people.

Eh not completely sadly. There was one podcast where they talked about the defensive user needing to be "a super hero" to be fun. So it's clear that's never going away.

My first day with Blender I made a perfect 3D Mario. Sure, I had someone guiding me through the tools, but still, first day. For a professional artist? No, it's not that difficult, not for a professional 3D artist well versed in the tool (and whatever other tools they use).
Here's a guy doing it pretty easily:

If EA can't hire someone well versed enough to use the tool and its add-ons as good as this guy, they have no business being an AAA video game company. I mean, it’s not like they’d have to do it from scratch. Start with a base, pin some images to it, then compile a texture.
SIDENOTE: You don’t need perfect pictures to make a decent approximation.
All it needs is super ninja googling skills to find pictures that you can adjust in size to get "close enough." Because, again, I'm not asking for a perfect face. I'm asking for a decent approximation if a face scan cannot be done.
Granted, some might prefer a completely generic face to a lesser quality approximation that won’t be as good as a face scan, but I am not among them.
Since Blender (I believe he is using Keentools) can make your butterfly texture from photos, really, you don't even need ONLY photos of the guy in question. You can use photos of guys who kind of like look him if you can't find a photo of him at a particular angle.
I am not aware of a single AAA studio that uses Blender?
Last I was aware of the industry standard modeling / rigging / animating tools are Autodesk 3D Studio Max and Autodesk Maya. A recent Tiburon character artist job posting requires proficiency with Maya and ZBrush.
In any event, there’s far more that goes into creating a 3D character’s face than just modeling and texturing.
They are still missing a lot of gameday equipment available in The Yard like undershirts, back towels, updated arm sleeves... Since they weren't able to do many face scans they should have at least given us the ability to create a face like in The Yard so we could create something similar. Minimal effort and a skip year for me based on what was shown thus far.

I went back and listened to that segment to be sure, and Tom(a producer, not a gameplay designer who you can tell is more of a casual player) was basically talking about how it's been that way historically, but Clint didn't come across as agreeing that it was a necessary part of the game.
IMO, with the improvements in coverage, AI, AI pass rushing and now adding game planning, along with User offensive players not being able to swerve all over the place, I'm not expecting User defenders to ever be able to single handedly dominate a game without being schematically sound, but we'll see.
That guy's head was 34,000 triangles by itself... Obviously you can get a more optimized model with some work, but 34,000 triangles on a head and that's how it looks? That makes me laugh a bit.

I wonder if it's because he hadn't signed his contract until yesterday? Maybe there's some legality stuff involving NFLPA & contracts that prevents them from just doing him before he has signed.
I could be way off, but since they got Deebo in there I'm sure they didn't pass up #3 overall "just because". They'll get him in there quick.

The Trevor Lawrence screen is just an awful eye sore to me. He is one of the newest scans, with the most high tech equipment they've got and this is all they can come up with?
I know the Coalition tech demo isn't final product, but that pic below is a comp for what should be expected on next gen and Madden is just nowhere close. To be fair, the screenshots with helmets look great, but they've got the resources to be more advanced than what this Lawrence image is.
I guess maybe I am the strange one here, but I don't care about face scans for football. They're wearing helmets that cover most of their face for the entire game. The only time you're seeing their faces is on the roster screen right? It's just a strange thing to me for people to get upset about.
Plus I am sure they will get more scans in throughout the game cycle.

There are a lot of us who don't care about it, but the folks who do, really care about it and will always really be put out when it's not to their liking, it's just how they're built.
Also, IMO sports developers aren't going ever try to match that facial depth of that Coalition demo, it's not really the best use of resources.

I made Colin Kaepernick for a PC mod using what they had in the game (edited a butterfly and used the head of another player, and edited arm textures for tattoos). If I can do that, they can make an approximate player likeness.
It doesn't matter what program they use. They'd presumably be proficient at it.
Now, I get it. Companies have long term plans about how their resources are allocated. I saw as much on a developer server for Chivalry 2 that I stumbled upon working as an internal tester (where milestones were mapped out months in advance — to the day). But THAT is why they wouldn't be able to create a player likeness without a face scan, not because they lack the ability to. It's outside of their plans, not outside the scope of their abilities.

Bro I’m being harsh about likenesses, but that’s Unreal 5. It’s still in beta ffs. Not really a fair comparison.
Small but I'm really happy to finally see the striped socks fixed. I'm hoping maybe they took a look at created teams socks but I'm not holding my breath
So if more likenesses are coming in a "title update" does that mean existing franchises will get the updates? In the past, you had to start a new franchise with the latest roster to get them.
I like to start with the default roster. Hoping I get an updated Lance at some point.

That and some Xbox360 era hair texture lol. I get that Madden isn't going to lead the way in face detail, but with the power of the consoles they need to be doing better than this.
And while it used to be true that the headscans would only be seen in the menu for the players, it's just not true anymore. In the beta there were a ton of mini cutscenes for scenarios and other franchise things for press conferences and in the locker rooms, etc. And the animations and character details was so bad in those cutscenes. It made me wonder how they got past QA, and maybe they won't make it into the full game because of how bad it looked.

From what I’ve watched today those 100 new faces are only for Create a Character, not for editing draft class faces. Those are pretty much the same with the player portrait still not matching the player models unfortunately

This is one of the more infuriating parts about Madden to me: the fact that they have a more intricate face detailing method literally already in the game but it's solely for a different mode and we're stuck with the same generic faces we've had for a decade now in Franchise, mismatch glitch and all.

Did Under Armour remove their logo from all their football stuff this year or is it something to do with madden? Could be outta the loop on this one.

Their contract with NFL ended. So it’s not in Madden anymore. Players like Tom Brady still have individual deals. But the logo is not allowed to be shown on accessories such as shoes and gloves anymore. The athletes have to cover it with tape or something if they still choose to wear it.

Yep, it's frustrating as hell to get even two-three years into your league and you have to start making decisions to make this player this face or that player that face so they can be different enough that it doesn't hurt the immersion. Once you get more and more rookies it's a losing battle.
At this point I would just settle for a 'Portrait Editor' that lets you change created players' portraits so that they can be as unique as possible and then I'll just deal with the in-game generic models. The only possible explanation for not being to have a supremely detailed face editor would be too much taxation on the game engine but I don't know if I buy that.

Yes, the new faces are usable when editing players. HOWEVER, currently it is a bit...buggy.
Currently, every player I have edited, NOT changing the face, their picture has changed randomly. It has to be a bug of some sort, but it happens.
Also, some of the new faces have a no picture when you are selecting it. However, a picture appears when you are done editing and just looking through the roster.
I will be doing more editing today and I will report back with anything I discover. I am going to try a few specific things to see what happens.

I doubt it’s the engine, unless the engineering was terrible. More likely it’d be very difficult to transfer it to non-user players. In PC, it appears the Face of the Franchise editor is stored very differently from generic faces, at least based on the Franchise Editor Tool.
So I tested editing a bit more and I can confirm that if you edit a player's name, the face/picture is replaced with a generic one. You can change ratings and equipment without losing the real face, but not the name.
As I mentioned before, the generic faces are again buggy. The pictures do not always match the face that appears. There are some faces on the editing screen that show up blank, but then have a picture when you look at the player outside of the editing screen.
I would like to say that I expect EA to fix this issue, but I really doubt they will since the generic faces have been a problem for a few years now. As a classic roster maker it is irritating, but something I am willing and able to work around.

One little thing I'd like to see changed: If you use the 49ers white alternates (throwbacks) and use white/primary for the shoe color, you get white/white. I'd like for it to be white/red like it is for all the other uniforms.

I'd rather see them finally add a cleat color editor like 2k before one single new cleat is added

Please! So tired of the generic every player wearing the same color cleat. Just give us anything. I just wonder if a system where we can choose in the player edit screen between black, white, TC 1&2 is capable of being added this year. Wish we could get a definitive answer. I’ve tried tweeting the equipment guru a bunch but he never replies to that one.
Sorry, haven't read the whole thread....anybody notice how the striped socks aren't working on the PS4? They either don't move at all or they turn into half white/half team color when you choose low striped socks. Not sure why that wasn't fixed on the latest patch.

For 49ers I’d like to see Trey Lance’s actual face.

SAME. I’m going to run a franchise pretty deep and would rather not be stuck with a generic one.
This is probably a Trey issue though - he just needs to make himself available for the scan.
Does anyone know if a face scan update will fix a player in an existing franchise?

Yes. Likeness will update within a franchise.

I suspect it is, but by god someone can do a better approximation in MAYA using photographs of him in a google search. It’s not some impossible task for someone who isn’t a total noob. There are even tutorials online about how to do it — at least the face model. But you could put the right hair on him by simply taking it from an already existing model. You could do that in the Franchise Editor for previous PC Maddens.

For players EA doesn't have scanned, EA picks an approximate match from their bank of generic heads based on the various complexions they have available.
I don't think EA ever sculpts an approximate likeness like 2K will for NBA 2K unless it's a superstar player that they'd get roundly mocked for if they assigned a generic head to that player instead (i.e a superstar quarterback like Tom Brady or Aaron Rodgers; Brady for the longest time actually didn't have a head scan).
Unrelated, I'm pretty sure EA's generic heads are all face scans of real people. I've spotted extras in movies and TV series who also appear in Madden, lol.

Lol if that’s true I feel bad for some of these guys. I remember when they had photos for rookies. Probably staff as well.
Anyway, I do understand EA has a method they choose. But lots of comments here are on what we as fans WISH they’d do instead. One for me is, if you can’t get a top ten pick to get scanned, take the few hours it takes and do it yourself. And I can’t see lining up vertices with an image possibly taking more than a few hours for someone who knows what they are doing if they already have generic head models to attach the distorted textures to.
Gallup- in all blue adidas adizero 11 we can’t recreate. And white adizero gloves with TC1 logo we can’t make either.
Elliot- in all white menace elite 2 or untouchable 3 (not sure) but those can only be all TC or black on madden unless you set your whole team to white on white shoes
DAK- white Jordan’s with different colors in spots that’d be cool if we could edit. Hate how if you wear black team shoes the Jordans go to a weird looking TC1 and 2 combo that just looks off.
Lot of primary white, black, and red shoes on the Bucs. Really wish/hope there’s a way they can at least give us the option on the edit player screen to set all customizable parts on shoes/and some gloves to 4 options. Black/white/TC1/TC2.
Looking at all the shoes we can’t have watching red zone. Still can’t believe we can’t just get a basic 4 color option in the edit player section. Seems so behind the times imo.

    Haha same.
