A Guide On How to Get Around the New Operation Sports

Hey OS’ers!

We’ve been working a lot over the past several months to get from our old version of the site to this one. There are going to be a lot of cool things we are able to do with our new backend that were simply not possible on the old OS.

How we reached this point was actually technically a lot harder than it appears, as we had to convert the site’s custom CMS from 2007 (which mind you, was a huge technical feat at the time) into a more modern architecture. This means some sacrifices with old content were made along the way — but new possibilities were unearthed.

For starters, we’ll be a lot more flexible with our content and look. When news is busy, the frontpage will be able to spotlight more stories and when things are a bit more steady as she goes we’ll also be able to accommodate that.

Another thing you’ll notice is you can still log-in and comment on news stories using your forum handle, and the stories are still appearing in-line inside of the forums. This was a bit harder to implement than expected but it was essential to retain the core essence of what makes OS what it has been.

You’ll be able to browse game pages like before, but now they’re presented much more visually which is more in line with modern web standards versus the old OS where it was a wall of text (I hated that thing after awhile).

Example of a singular game page.

Another thing you can do is click into related topics at the bottom of articles to find related articles covering the selected topics. We’ll eventually be doing crazy things like setting up pages dedicated to these for easy content discovery.

Its Good on Every Screen

While the forums aren’t quite to the responsive world yet, the frontpage of OS is now responsive to every screen its put on.

The site will load and look great on anything from a smartphone, tablet, to desktop PC. The smaller screen versions of OS are also smaller in terms of size, so the site will load fast when you are on the go.

We are planning on the forums getting a similar skin treatment in the coming weeks and months.

New Search Function

A big problem with our proprietary CMS we developed a decade ago was the search function wasn’t very functional. The new version of our search bar for the site will allow you to find content and topics with greater ease than ever. If you are looking for an article which mentions Mark Trumbo for instance, the search engine will find that for you. Obviously this isn’t truly groundbreaking stuff, but it is functionality we’ve lacked while making the transition over to our new CMS.

New Ways to Discover Content

We have several new ways which related, relevant, and top content will be discoverable by you. Our trending sections will feature the most visited and commented on articles over the last 5-14 days (depending on the section it is displaying in). This will allow you to see the top and most important stories on OS even if you miss a day.

Another thing you’ll notice is our related content suggestion engine, which displays content which is directly related to the article you are reading. We’re still tweaking this one, but this will allow you to discover relevant and impactful pieces of content you might not have already seen.

There’s More to Come

We have some big plans for OS going into the future. The new site is just the first step towards our bigger goals. We hope you keep coming back and we hope to see you around as we continue to improve the experience here at Operation Sports!

  1. App doesnt work anymore. Not a fan of the front page. Couldnt log in from the home page or the app. Please fix this. I cant check forums atm.
Thanks for all the constructive feedback ;)
Just kidding there... but really... if you'd like to see something done differently feel free to post it here. We're open to feedback.
When you log in on the new home page it doesn't show you are logged in but when if you click on forums to go there it does. This will need to be fixed for chrome browser at least. Firefox works like it should.
BTW I like the new look. :waytogo::waytogo:
    **Update**
What I have found out is this is only affecting my chrome browser on my Mac (haven't test on PC yet). I also tested Safari and it works like it should as well. In both FF and Safar after logging in I see my username show up like it should.
Sorry to be negative but the new layout is a big turn off, most of the most interesting facts and info I get from here are from the comments and conversations, many times articles get left without updates but the community update news and info in comments, this new format is a lot messier than the old, more clicks to see and get to info and commenting isn't as easy.
This place is all about the community and this new layout is rather egotistical.. for me the articles were actually the least important part of OS.... community is at the heart of what made this place special... much like Digital Spy did... you have turned your back on the community, digital spy made identical changes about a year ago and its been a mess ever since.

Not a big fan. Everything is cluttered and there's no clear direction. It's sleek and clean looking, but the actual direction is a mess.
Its painfully slow and bugged when using chrome on my phone. (Freezes, slow, locked my phone when trying to reply)*
The OS app seems to be working again after issues last night, so that's definitely a positive.
One of the the things I loved about OS is actually reading the articles. Seems you guys are going to these videos posts? Why? When I'm at work I like to kick back and read the articles you guys post. I don't want to have to pop headphones in everywhere I am just to get news on a new game. I mean, come on. Bleacher Report gets ripped apart enough for these video articles, now you guys too?*
To each their own, just giving my honest feedback here.
I feel like the layout is like a "Click-Bate" style of a web page of "how celebrity kids grew up to be hot!" or a bored housewife's blog page.  The old look had appeal because the layout was unique, now it is the same as 90% of garbage websites out there.
The content is still good, but man the pages take a real long time to load.  Maybe once cookies start saving.
I do appreciate all the hard work people, put into the site and I know others will love this layout, just not my style.
Absolutely love the layout.  It is great.  A fresh new look with new capabilities is awesome.  I can't wait until the forums and all of OS gets the full treatment.
Keep up the good work.  I love it!
The new look is clean, but it is a bit unwieldy at this point. I expect you'll shake out the issues as time goes on.
I'm most happy about the forums remaining as they are. :)
I like the layout but I wish the dates and times of the articles were on the front page with the article title and not buried within the link. That would make it much easier for time reference.
new layout is cool. However i think the extremely bright white could be toned down so its a little easier on eye strain for those that may have sensitivities.
Not really a big of the new tablet-friendly (I guess) layouts that a lot of websites are adopting. *They always seem to be full of unnecessary clutter *with too much going on and a lot of stuff seemingly blown up larger than it needs to be.
Liking the new front pages a lot. Makes it MUCH easier to see articles.
In fact, I just stumbled across an NBA 2k17 article from May 1st about a classic roster. Had no idea it even existed until now.
