Spear Interactive has shared a new development update for Varsity High School Football, offering a clearer look at how the project is shaping up as development continues.
The update outlines plans for Winter Playtest #2, which brings refinements to 7on7 gameplay along with an early look at a multi-season Dynasty sim. Coaching schemes and tendencies continue getting tweaks and the team plans to continue testing the community file sharing system. Access for Patreon supporters runs from January 23 through February 20 with the public playtest scheduled for February 21 to February 28.
On the gameplay side, the focus has been on improving pursuit logic to create more natural angles and eliminate situations where defenders trail the ball carrier in a straight line. Custom rules have also been expanded, allowing players to adjust scoring, clock settings, overtime behavior and mercy rules. Quarterback, wide receiver and defensive back interactions continue to be refined as well.
A new PA announcer has been added to call out downs, distances, turnovers and touchdowns, while crowd react to big moments on the field. Background environmental sounds such like wind, birds and nearby traffic help round out the stadium experience and add to the overall sense of being at a live high school game.
Those interested in joining the playtest can sign up and back the project through Patreon. While the full release is planned for Xbox and PlayStation, testing is currently limited to PC on Steam.
