Jameis Winston always knows how to entertain, even when he’s not playing. The Giants backup quarterback appeared on ESPN’s ManningCast on Saturday during the 49ers-Seahawks game. Eli and Peyton Manning asked him about one of his most famous moments from his time with the Buccaneers.
His pregame “eat a W” speech didn’t just fire up his team; it became a viral sensation, spawning memes that still get laughs from NFL fans years later. The moment has endured in NFL culture, popping up in highlight reels and social media throwbacks long after the game ended. Even this year, Winston recreated the signature move with Giants starter Jaxson Dart following a preseason win, proving that some traditions never lose their punch.
According to Sports Illustrated, Eli Manning couldn’t resist asking Winston to break down the proper way to “eat a W.” He joked that Peyton might need a few pointers, given how much food he devours on camera. Winston’s response, true to form, was equal parts hilarious and over-the-top.
Winston’s detailed breakdown had everyone in stitches
“The most important thing about eating a W is the approach,” Winston explained with a straight face. “When you dive into eating a W, you know that you’re eating a nice protein-based meal. One thing I have, I have what you call a mallet finger. And when you have two mallet ring fingers, it allows you to really lock that middle finger and then you just take it slowly, and you bite the nub.”
He continued his detailed explanation without breaking character. “You bite the nub that’s on top of that W and it’s amazing, it’s very delicious,” he said. The Seahawks have been leading their conference with strong performances this season, but Winston’s personality made this appearance memorable. His serious delivery made the whole thing even funnier.
That wasn’t Winston’s only memorable moment on the show. He sang a special version of “Happy Birthday” for Eli Manning. When asked to compare his pregame routine with Eli’s, Winston made a funny comment about their hips. “My hips are official,” he said, suggesting Eli’s hips might not be as good.
Winston also agreed with Peyton’s suggestions for NFL rule changes inspired by the NBA. The quarterback kept the Manning brothers laughing throughout his entire appearance. While some NFL players face uncertain futures with their coaching staff, Winston continues to bring joy wherever he goes. His personality and humor made for great television once again.
