UPDATE: After Elly De La Cruz confirmed he’d be featured on the cover of MLB The Show 25, Gunnar Henderson dropped hints that he might be joining him. Shortly after, Paul Skenes appeared to join the chat as well. It looks like MLB The Show 25 could feature at least three cover athletes this year. More details are likely to emerge soon, possibly as early as tomorrow.
Original story: We’re still awaiting more information about MLB The Show 25. As it stands, the game’s release date remains a mystery, as does as does the identity of the player who will grace the cover of the series’ latest entry. Previously, we’ve opined about who should be considered for the cover of MLB The Show 25, but details on who it could be were left purely to speculation. But that has finally changed.
Though neither San Diego Studio nor MLB has formally announced who the cover athlete for MLB The Show 25 will be — or revealed the artwork for it — one MLB player has been revealed to be on the cover of this year’s game. And, as fate would have it, it’s a player who many have been clamoring for all offseason.
Elly De La Cruz Will Be The Cover Athlete For MLB The Show 25
In a post to his Instagram page, Cincinnati Reds shortstop Elly De La Cruz confirmed that he would be on the cover of MLB The Show 25 when it finally releases.
As seen in our aforementioned list of MLB players we wanted to see as the MLB The Show 25 cover athlete, Elly De La Cruz was right at the top. And how couldn’t he be? Even though the 23-year-old Dominican shortstop has tons of work to do in terms of development, De La Cruz has emerged as one of MLB’s most exciting young talents due to his flashy style and speed on the basepaths.
Since his MLB debut in 2023, De La Cruz has slashed a respectable .250/.324/.447/.771. And when he’s gotten on base, Elly has made things happen with his legs, stealing 102 bases through 258 total games played. Within a month of his debut, De La Cruz made baseball history by being the first player to steal second, third, and home in the same inning since Greasy Neal did it in 1919. And in 2024, he got his first All-Star nod.
It’s unlikely that anyone will have any issues with Elly De La Cruz being the cover star for MLB The Show 25. And if it means we get more great cards of his to use in Diamond Dynasty as a result, then even better.
