Forza Horizon 6 just ignited the community by teasing a bit more about Touge battles. The Forza Horizon official account dropped a post on X, highlighting the 2021 Hyundai i20 N as possibly the perfect starter car for drifting and Touge battles in Japan.
Accompanied by in-game footage boasting the car’s sleek N badge against a dark backdrop, the post has fans thrilled about what the mode could have to offer. Set in the scenic open world of FH6, this mode could redefine what street racing in gaming really is.
With the launch nearly approaching, we have a lot of questions: Will Touge battle be a major attraction of career mode, will it be implemented into playlists, and what about the online element? While we don’t have any concrete evidence to answer some of these questions confidently, we can speculate based on the information we have before launch.
What Are Touge Battles?

Touge battles go far back in Japanese racing culture, with the word “Touge” meaning high-speed races on narrow, zigzag mountain passes. These are not your stereotypical races, but demand raw drifting skills, where racers have to drive through switchbacks and risky drops, usually in the dark.
Touge racing got famous in the 1960’s due to iconic racers like Kunimitsu Takahashi, who mastered the art of sliding through corners to maintain high speeds. It is a cat-and-mouse game with one car leading up front, and the other chasing behind, not specifically devoted to stealing the lead.
As safety is a common concern due to the circuits being on public roads, machines like the Toyota AE86 or Nissan Silvia shine here, offering great road grip with sufficient speed. It makes sense, then why similar cars are abundant in the main roster. The real fun about Touge battles is the risk it contains, and FH6 is set in the perfect environment to capture that risk. From the misty mountains that make it impossible to see to the coastal cliffs, the game seems tailor-made for these duels.
Progression And The Midnight Atmosphere

Reports suggest that Touge progression in Forza Horizon 6 could tie into the game’s career structure, but with a twist. You may start with accessible cars like the Hyundai i20 N, and complete tutorial battles to build up your rep. As you progress into the story, you will be able to unlock opponents like Keiichi Tsuchiya (the Drift King) with their tuned classic, testing your skills.
There have been rumors of Tsuchiya’s appearance in Forza Horizon 6, but for now, they are just rumors. However, we can bet that challenging local legends will be a major part of the Touge experience.
The Midnight atmosphere would excel here, transforming peaceful highlands into precarious battlegrounds, with wet roads amplifying drift physics. Forza Horizon is known for its extensive customization, and if implemented the right way, it would open up diverse tuning options.
Adding to this, the game could introduce “Midnight” events: midnight duels amplifying underground vibes, full of neon-lit skylines in the background. As unveiled in the recent teasers, food delivery side quests could be integrated into the mode. Making you deliver ramen up winding roads under a short timer, unlocking exclusive rewards.
What Touge Battles Look Like In Other Games

Legendary racing games like Tokyo Xtreme Racer and Initial D have captured the soul of Touge battles a long time ago. In Tokyo Xtreme Racer, Touge battles appear in in spin-offs like Kaido Battle: Touge no Densetsu. In this, battles occur on recreated mountains like Haruna or Hakone, containing pursuits among heavy traffic.
Initial D games, inspired by the manga, capture the essence of Touge perfectly: one-on-one battles on courses like Akina, with you either chasing or evading in iconic machines. The duels are scored on gap closure, with the weather and time of day amping up the difficulty.
Unlike TXR’s closed tracks or Initial D’s stages, Forza’s open world allows for flawless transitions from neon-lit streets to mountain chases. The upgraded physics engine could help in giving the most realistic feeling of drifts, alongside unique biomes for varying grips. Playground has the chance to outshine both franchises by adding narrative depth with visuals that showcase what the developers are capable of.
