Tom Rizzo did not try to sugarcoat his words while talking about the hiring process at the Cleveland Browns. “Their infatuation with analytics, where has it gotten them? You suck,” Rizzo bashed the Browns. “Do you need me to tell you this, or can you just look at your record and your roster? You suck. The analytics got you one of the worst trades of all time. The analytics have produced the worst coaching candidates I’ve ever seen. And you’re going back at it? What is wrong with these people?”
As reported by Sportskeeda, his frustration stems from the team’s weird hiring process that seems to make a mockery of the candidates. Andrew Berry, the general manager of the team, is on the lookout for a new coach. Before they can be interviewed, the coaches have to go through a series of unconventional steps, which include personality tests, written essays, and homework assignments.
Reportedly, his methods were not liked by the top coaches who were applying to the team. Former Dolphins coach, Michael McDaniel, refused to go through with their scheduled in-person interview. Jesse Minters, a Chargers defensive coordinator, also chose to decline their interview in favor of the Baltimore Ravens. Finally, Grant Udinski, Jaguars offensive coordinator, withdrew his application in search of better opportunities.
Cleveland Browns’ hiring process seems more like a school application
Currently, Browns defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz, Rams passing game coordinator Nate Scheelhaase, Commanders running back coach Anthony Lynn, and Todd Monken, the former Ravens offensive coordinator, are the only candidates remaining in contention for the role of their head coach.
No matter the circumstances and delays, their search for the head coach seems to be nearing its completion. After the Rams’ loss in the NFC championship game on Sunday, Scheelhaase was interviewed by the team.
The Athletic’s Dianna Russini reported, “The Cleveland Browns are getting right to work this morning. They are in the Los Angeles area to meet with Rams passing game coordinator Nathan Scheelhaase for their head coaching vacancy.”
Other than Scheelhaase, both Grant Udinski and Jim Schwartz had given second interviews to the team. Udinski’s withdrawal of application further pushed the Browns’ plans. Grant Udinski had a clear decision before he pulled out of the Cleveland Browns’ hiring process. He was looking forward to joining the Buffalo Bills as their next head coach or staying with Jacksonville with a raise.
