Former NBC host Chuck Todd unleashed sharp criticism at the College Football Playoff Committee on Sunday after Alabama Crimson Tide secured a postseason spot despite finishing the year with three losses. Todd didn’t hold back, calling the committee’s decision a “corrupt joke” in a post on social media.
Alabama’s résumé was undeniably shaky. The Tide fell to the Georgia Bulldogs 28 – 7 in the SEC Championship Game and had earlier losses to Florida State Seminoles and Oklahoma Sooners. While they did beat Georgia by three points in their regular-season meeting, the overall record still raised eyebrows among fans and analysts.
Despite the setbacks, the committee placed Alabama at No. 9 in the playoff bracket. According to Fox Sports, Todd found it indefensible. Taking to X, he blasted the ranking decision, writing: “Wow. Bama doesn’t move? What a corrupt joke of a cmte. Regardless of who gets the 10 slot.”
Alabama’s coach stood by his team’s record despite the criticism
Crimson Tide head coach Kalen DeBoer stood firmly behind his team, saying he believed Alabama deserved a spot in the playoff regardless of what critics or analysts were saying. “When it’s not in your control, there’s always anxious times,” he said. “Really still felt good about what we accomplished all season long. You just trust that resume, if you want to call it that, is what’s going to provide the information to help make this type of decision.”
Still, he expressed confidence that the Tide’s body of work over the season, including their win over the Georgia Bulldogs earlier in the year, would ultimately carry weight. DeBoer stressed that the team had battled through adversity, improved week by week, and shown enough resilience to earn their place among the nation’s best.
In his view, the results should “speak for themselves,” and he made it clear he wasn’t interested in outside noise or the heated debates swirling around Alabama’s postseason fate.
Alabama will play against Oklahoma in the first round of the College Football Playoff. The Crimson Tide were ranked higher than Miami, who barely made it into the field over Notre Dame. Fans have been debating selection controversies, similar to how match engine debates divide gaming communities.
Todd, who is from Miami, was happy that the Hurricanes got into the playoff. He posted on X saying, “Well, hallelujah. College Station here we come.” His comments show he had mixed feelings about the committee’s choices.
The controversy highlights ongoing debates about how the playoff committee picks teams. Many fans and analysts question whether teams with three losses should get playoff spots over other teams with better records.
