Wendy's publicly offered Geno Smith a fast food gig after the Raiders cut him, but he fired back using their own financials

Got cut and still won the day.

Quarterback Geno Smith was released by the Las Vegas Raiders and quickly received an unexpected job offer from fast food chain Wendy’s. Smith turned it down in a sharp and clever way, by using Wendy’s own financial numbers against them.

According to ClutchPoints, Wendy’s started it on X, posting directly at Smith: “@GenoSmith3 in case things don’t work out in free agency we’re looking for a Chief Tasting Officer…” Smith responded fast, quoting an article titled “Wendy’s sales plunged last quarter,” and adding: “Get ya cheese up 1st.”

Smith is a two-time Pro Bowler and won the 2022 Comeback Player of the Year award. He also led the NFL in completion percentage during the 2022-23 season. His release from the Raiders after the 2025-26 campaign has put him back on the free agent market.

Wendy’s has a history of working with big-name athletes in their campaigns

Wendy’s has partnered with several well-known athletes for advertising in the past. Their list includes Naismith Basketball Hall of Famer Reggie Miller and Heisman Trophy winners Caleb Williams, Reggie Bush, and Matt Leinart.

So the offer for Smith to become their “Chief Tasting Officer” was in line with how they usually operate. Meanwhile, other sports figures have also been making headlines lately, such as Puka Nacua’s bizarre callout of Sam Darnold that left many fans stunned.

At 35, Smith is a seasoned veteran who could interest teams looking for an experienced quarterback. The Miami Dolphins and New York Jets are both seen as logical landing spots. The Atlanta Falcons and Minnesota Vikings have also been mentioned as possible fits.

Smith is focused on finding a new team, preferably one where he can compete for a starting role next season. His NFL track record shows he still has plenty to offer at this stage of his career. Off the field, sports has seen its share of controversies too, including a union chief stepping down over scandal after a bombshell investigation went public.

Wendy’s, on the other hand, is dealing with a dip in sales, which Smith was quick to point out. The exchange got attention online, with many noting how well Smith used the fast food chain’s own struggles to shut down their offer.

Whether Smith ends up signing with a new NFL team soon or not, his response to Wendy’s showed he is sharp and confident. It also put a spotlight on the brand’s recent financial troubles at the same time.
