New York Rangers General Manager Chris Drury sent out an unusual open letter to fans on Friday afternoon, trying to address concerns after a terrible stretch of losses. It’s rare for an executive to use official team letterhead just to admit things are going poorly on the ice.
The Rangers have struggled all season, but their recent losing streak has been particularly bad, dropping them to last place in the NHL’s Metropolitan Division. According to Outkick, fans have been making their frustration clear to the front office, and it’s understandable why they’re upset.
The team has lost five straight games. That streak included a crushing 10-2 loss to the Boston Bruins on Saturday and an 8-4 defeat against the Ottawa Senators on Wednesday. Drury apparently took Thursday to think things over before deciding a public statement was needed.
Drury’s letter promises change but avoids the word “rebuild”
Drury opened his letter with an apology and acknowledged the fans’ frustration. He wanted supporters to know the front office understands their disappointment. “We wanted to take a moment to connect with our loyal and passionate fanbase,” Drury wrote. “We know and feel your disappointment with how the season has gone to this point. We are just as frustrated and want nothing more than to deliver an on-ice product you can be proud of – it’s what drives us every day.”
However, Drury’s explanation of the team’s plan going forward was unclear. He made it clear the organization is not planning a full rebuild. Instead, they will do a “retool,” though the difference between the two isn’t obvious when the team is struggling this badly. In other sports news, prosecutors recently dropped Fred Kerley’s case after the Olympic sprinter faced serious allegations.
“With our position in the standings and injuries to key players this season, we must be honest and realistic about our situation,” he said. “We are not going to stand pat – a shift will give us the ability to be smart and opportunistic as we retool the team. This will not be a rebuild. This will be a retool built around our core players and prospects.”
The “retool” claim is hard to believe when the team recently traded away key players like Jacob Trouba, Chris Kreider, and Kappo Kakko last season. Additionally, on the same day Drury released his letter, news broke that forward Artemi Panarin won’t be offered a contract extension. Panarin is a major star, and losing him feels like the start of tearing the team down, not just making adjustments. Meanwhile, Corey Holcomb made wild allegations about Stephen A. Smith during a recent discussion.
