Popular NBA referee Bill Kennedy will be sidelined for an indefinite period after suffering a hamstring injury during Saturday’s game. Kennedy hopes to return before the regular season wraps up, though the timeline remains uncertain.
The injury occurred during the matchup between the Philadelphia 76ers and the Orlando Magic, forcing Kennedy to leave the court in a wheelchair. According to On3, medical staff confirmed that he strained his hamstring, meaning he will miss several games while he recovers. The exact duration of his absence will depend on how quickly he heals and responds to treatment.
Kennedy has become a fan favourite over the years, not just for his officiating but for his clear and entertaining explanations during replay reviews and coach challenges. His ability to break down complicated calls has earned him respect from players, coaches, and fans alike.
Kennedy’s unique style made him a fan favorite
Boston Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla even admitted that he once intentionally challenged a call on January 1 just to hear Kennedy’s reasoning, highlighting how much the league values his presence both on and off the court. “Really, just kind of wanted to hear Billy Kennedy,” Mazzulla said. “He does a really great challenge. We were going to do it anyway just to kind of hear him deliver the challenge.”
Kennedy started working as an NBA referee in 1995. Before that, he called games in the Continental Basketball Association. He also worked college games in the Big 12, Pac-12, and Mountain West conferences from 1987 to 2012. His dedication to officiating mirrors the commitment seen in other sports professionals, like Caleb Williams leading comeback victories.
Kennedy’s popularity soared in 2019 when the NBA introduced the coach’s challenge. Fans quickly took notice of how meticulously he explained each ruling and whether the challenge was successful. His calm, clear breakdowns turned what could be confusing moments into something engaging, and even entertaining, for viewers.
One recent example happened on December 30 during a game between the Memphis Grizzlies and Toronto Raptors. After reviewing a play, Kennedy gave his usual detailed explanation about why the original call stood.
While Kennedy earns respect through his work, some MLB stars criticize team management decisions in other sports. In 2015, Kennedy became the second NBA referee to publicly say he is gay. He came out after Rajon Rondo was suspended for using slurs during a game that Kennedy was officiating.
