Steel City Interactive CEO and founder Ash Habib recently confirmed the studio is shifting its full attention toward the future of their boxing game. While Undisputed will continue to remain playable across both offline and online modes, the team is now focusing on building a sequel in Unreal Engine. The goal is to create not only a stronger boxing experience, but what the studio hopes will become the most advanced sports combat game possible, while continuing to keep the community involved throughout development.
Habib also spoke openly about the online issues players experienced with Undisputed, admitting many of the challenges came from the studio’s commitment to realism. He explained that the movement system, physics and overall feel of the fighters inside the ring were priorities from the beginning, but those same systems ended up making online performance much more difficult to stabilize consistently. Looking back, he acknowledged there are areas where compromises probably could have been made, but said the team always understood mistakes would happen while developing its first title. External studios were later brought in to help improve the online side, though Habib noted the game’s foundation had become too complex to fully solve every issue the way they originally hoped.
Because of that, the studio made the decision to stop future updates and DLC plans for Undisputed and instead put resources into starting over with a brand-new foundation. Habib said the sequel is already in production with developers who previously worked at EA Sports, Rockstar Games and 2K now part of the studio. He described Undisputed as a major learning experience and believes the team now has the tools, talent and direction needed to take the franchise much further.
