UFC Chief Dana White Recalls Being Broke. But His $600 Million Dollar Life Advice Goes Viral.

Dana White's million dollar advice might change your fortune.

Dana White built a billion-dollar empire in combat sports, yet he says some of the happiest days of his life came when he had no money. The UFC chief recently recalled being broke and delivered a blunt message that quickly went viral: happiness has nothing to do with your bank account. His million-dollar advice was simple: if you are miserable when you are broke, money will not fix you.

White, 56, shared the perspective during a chance interaction with street photographer Peter Fouad. According to the viral clip circulating online, the longtime fight executive did not discuss pay-per-view numbers or championship bouts. Instead, he reflected on mindset, fulfillment, and how wealth changes people. Dana White is also taking UFC to the White House, but the company may suffer losses in the millions.

“If you’re miserable when you’re broke, you’re going to be really miserable when you make some money,” White said. “The key to life is to be happy. Some of the happiest times of my life were when I was broke. Money changes everything, I think, not always. If you’re happy when you’re broke, you should be happy when you have some money.”

From Broke Boxing Instructor To UFC Boss

White’s comments carry weight because his rise was anything but conventional. In the 1990s, long before he became synonymous with the Ultimate Fighting Championship, he worked as a boxing aerobics instructor in Boston while juggling jobs at the Boston Harbor Hotel. He later managed several boxers, determined to stay connected to the fight world even though he never fully pursued a professional boxing career himself.

He has often said he always “wanted to be in the fight business.” That ambition eventually led him to partner with Lorenzo Fertitta and Frank Fertitta III, helping transform the UFC from a struggling promotion into a global sports powerhouse. In July 2016, the Fertitta brothers sold the UFC for $4.025 billion, marking one of the most remarkable exits in sports business history. White remained the public face of the company through the transition. His current net worth nears $600 million.

Nearly a decade into the Endeavor and TKO era, White continues to expand his portfolio. Beyond the UFC, he oversees ventures such as Zuffa Boxing, UFC BJJ, and Power Slap. His schedule reflects a man deeply embedded in the business he once dreamed of merely entering.

White shows no signs of slowing down. The UFC remains a global machine, staging 43 events annually and operating under a reported $7.7 billion media rights agreement with Paramount+, alongside additional broadcast partnerships. The organization’s steady growth has solidified its place as the dominant force in mixed martial arts.
