The San Francisco 49ers signed Purdy to a five-year contract extension for $265 million back in May this year. This includes $181 million in guarantees alongside an annual salary of $53 million. That’s a big price tag for any other star in the NFL currently playing on the field.

Jason Kelce and his brother, Travis Kelce, spoke about Chris Jones’ comeback with the 49ers on their New Heights podcast. The two brothers said that head coach Kyle Shanahan has a real tough decision on his hands on which quarterback to use as a starter moving forward in the season. Travis also questioned whether Jones should be the pick since the 49ers have paid a lot of money to Purdy.

“The way Mac Jones has been balling. Man, that’s a tough decision, because you paid Purdy a lot of money,” said Travis

Kelce Says San Francisco’s Massive QB Deal Raises Serious Value Questions

The Kelce brothers have certainly raised an important question that needs to be asked of the San Francisco 49ers. The question is, which quarterback gets the starter pick on the team, Brock Purdy or Chris Jones?

If we take a look at this season so far, Jones is currently 5-2 as a starting QB for the Niners. Jones is having the run of his life right now and has a career peak rating of 93.6. So, there’s no question that the former first-round draft pick seems to be in top shape and only gets better with each game.

However, Purdy has only played two games so far due to injuries. So, some would argue that he deserves a fair chance as the starting QB. After all, if we take a look at his overall performances in his career, Purdy helped lead the team to a Super Bowl appearance in 2023 and earned himself a Pro Bowl selection.

Mac Jones’ Revival Has Fans Debating Whether Coaching Matters More Than Talent

It’s undeniable that Mac Jones has worked really hard to make this comeback. However, we shouldn’t overlook the fact that the San Francisco 49ers head coach, Kyle Shanahan, also worked his magic. The team is currently 6-3 in the playoffs.

Fans have also credited Shanahan for still keeping the team afloat and keeping them going despite a major injury. So, this proves that even though the players certainly deliver magic on the field, effective coaching can save a team from drowning.
